Orange Santa Clara is Intel Atom-powered in official pics

MWC 2012

Orange has a new own-brand smart phone to tout. Dubbed the Orange Santa Clara (though I'm told the name will be different at launch), this 4-inch mobile comes packing an Intel Atom processor and a high-resolution screen.

The Santa Clara borrows heavily from Apple's design manual, with the squarish build and silver edging around the sides feeling highly reminiscent of the iPhone 4S. But you can't compare apples and oranges, and on the inside, this smart phone is very different from Cupertino's effort.

For one thing, it's powered by an Intel processor, specifically the Intel Atom Z2460.

Until I get more time with the Santa Clara, it's hard to say how that will stack up against chips inside rival smart phones. But I was shown some high-resolution video and graphically demanding gaming, and the Santa Clara didn't seem to break a sweat. In other words, I'm cautiously optimistic.

The screen could be what really puts the Santa Clara a cut above other entry-level smart phones though. This 4-inch number has a 600x1,024-pixel resolution. That's good news for photos and video, and I thought text and icons on this screen looked impressively crisp.

Spin the Santa Clara around and you'll find an 8-megapixel camera, capable of recording 1080p resolution video. Neat.

We'll be bringing you more news on this mobile as we find it. In the meantime, let us know if you're intrigued in the comments below, or over on our Facebook wall.

but it's bound to suck - it will have Orange bloatware and their nasty UI on it.
