Orange San Francisco £99 Android 2.1 phone has dangerously low Internet cap

Alcatel's superbudget OT-980 showed us that Android smart phones could break the £100 barrier, and just days later Orange has repeated the trick with a phone called the San Francisco, a 2.1 Eclair-running device for £99 on pay as you go.

It's the latest in Orange's range of budget smart phones that have many of the features we expect from more expensive ones. The first one we saw was the Orange Boston in May, which never made it here. But with the San Francisco, you now get the chance to try Android without paying a large amount on a handset or a long-term contract.

As well as Android 2.1, the San Francisco gives you a 600MHz processor, 3-megapixel camera, a 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen as well as 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. That's pretty impressive for £99 -- much better than the Alcatel, especially as the OT-980 only has a resistive touchscreen. It comes with a 2GB microSD card, but that can be upgraded to 32GB capacity.

The San Francisco will come on Orange's pay as you go Dolphin tariffs. With £10 top up on pay as you go, you get 300 free texts, access to the popular Orange Wednesdays offer and 'free Internet'. That's rather misleading as Orange caps this at a pathetic 100MB a month, which if you're going to use Android's full Web browsing capability will vanish in a few days.

Orange says any extra Internet use will cost a maximum of £2 a day, but that will be capped at 25MB, so we're not sure if you pay even more if you go past it, or are simply stopped from connecting.

The phone does appear very good value, looking like a genuine smart phone with Android 2.1 and decent-looking, if simple, hardware. But the minimal free Internet allowance worries us -- it's natural to guzzle data on an Android phone like this. Anyway, have a butcher's at the San Francisco in this low-rent video:

im wondering how quickly this phone will be unlocked for other networks lol cos hell if it can...DAMN Im going for this NOT the other which was still worth it...but 3.5 inch capacitive screen for 99 quid? damnnnnnnn

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 September, 2010 09:58

waw this is very good value for money. is has a decent size capacitive screen which should make typing much easier than most other low end android handsets.

my three questions are
1. is the camera decent
2. how good/bad is the battery life
3. will it get the update to froyo

no froyo will be a dealbreaker for me

anonymous 23 September, 2010 12:47

What is the problem with a low internet cap if you have WiFi?
Surely you just have to limit yourself to not using excessive amounts of 3G...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 23 September, 2010 15:40

well it being 2.1 rather than 2.2 isnt too much of deal breaker to me...and the camera is only a 3megapaixel jobby WITHOUT flash or LED light which ok IS a shame...but its stilla 3.5 inch capacitive screen with wifi and 3g...thats pretty damn good for the price, especially is it looks like orange HASNT butchered the software with a version of their own firmware it seems...

Cos I seriously hate the orange phones which get their software and they end up being the worst things going my old LG Renoir I had back early 2009 was perfect example....great phone but terrible with orange software.

Come on guys I wanna know if it will be possible to unlock this...cos I would love to have it on vodafone.

I agree Harry. But some people won't necessarily get WiFi when out and about. And this isn't really about 'excessive' browsing, more like 'everyday' browsing.

Android 2.1? 3.5" Capacitive touch screen? £99? That's rather epic. Shame about the 100MB Internet cap. Not like Tesco with the iPhone 3GS last year!

My first Orange phone with Wifi wouldn't let me connect, because my broadband is O2. I cancelled the contract, just beware. Looks like a fab phone, let's hope unlocked arrives soon.

I got one today and I'm pretty impressed, so far it's worked flawlessly with my home WiFi and two open WiFi sites I've passed through.
The screen is top-notch - as good as a HTC Desire though slightly (-0.2cm diag) smaller. Scrolling through menus & loading apps isn't as quick as a Desire (600MHz v 1000MHz) but it's no slouch either.
Internet browsing is a very good (over WiFi) albeit without flash - pages load quickly and youtube videos play smoothly.
Sound quality (music) is good (to my ear), volume is ok but not the loudest out there - the pre-installed FM radio is non RDS so you'll need to remember radio station frequencies if you want to change stations quickly .
You can opt to run the normal Android launcher instead of Orange's effort and the rest of the Orange branded software is unobtrusive - some of it is actually quite handy. Animated (live) wallpaper is available.
The pre-installed games are Guitar Hero's 5 and WWTBAM - the latter a trial that expires after one question! Orange - I agree their data allowance is poor however it need not be as bad as £2/day for 25Mb (as stated by Crave) - £5 will get you 250Mb of data to be used over one month and can be paid for out of your topup balance (order via text message - it gets activated almost immediately).
Build quality is very good - it's not hewn from a solid lump of metal but quality plastics are used and the phone feels solid and does not creak when squeezed like some I can mention.
My first impression conclusion is that you could spend a lot more money and get a 'better' phone but if you do you won't get your monies worth of 'better' - for £99 this is the phone bargain of the century - all 10 years of it.

Also bought this today, its a great phone, quick, got it to replace my current contract phone the HTC Tattoo running 1.6. and glad I have. Very cheap to say its such a good phone! The Orange software can be closed and is just in the app list so its no worries. I doubt it will get 2.2 but it doesn't need any changes.

Bought this phone yesterday and I am finding it excellent in both operation and value for money.

Orange do not sell a slip case for this phone but I have discovered that the Samsung Universal Case (£12.95) fits like a glove, has an easy release loop and gives access to phone's charging point when it is in the case.

Highly recommend both!

This phone can be unlock and you can install custom ROMs see: android.modaco.com/category/453/zte-blade-blade-modaco-com/ for more info.

I went into Orange to try one of these the other day. Nice speedy little phone. But I did notice that I can find angry Birds beta on my HTC Desire yet it doe snot show up on this mobile market place. The screen and OS meet the spec's so maybe the CPU is no good.

I did like the feel of the mobile as I'm looking at getting the wife it, but She loves Angry Birds.
Anyone else had problems with apps not been on this phones market place?

The OS does seem fast for the price, but again The HTC has 2.2 now and that is faster. but I guess if they put in the faster CPU it would eat into their contracts for "high end " Mobiles
Cheers

Anonymous said "My first Orange phone with Wifi wouldn't let me connect, because my broadband is O2." - What a load of rubbish! Wifi uses protocols that are completely independant of your internet service provider. You would have had an ADSL modem/router provided to you from O2 that shares internet service over the Wifi protocols to all other Wifi devices using the same band regardless of manufacturer. How do you think your non-O2 laptop or non-O2 desktop computer are able to connect? What is more likely to be true is that you did not setup either your Wifi phone or router correctly!

I bought this phone as my first decent smart-phone last week, having been with Orange for a while now. Orange, sadly, appear to have a terrible technical service, as the transfer of my old number has taken a week, with 5 different attempts by the sales staff at the shop. I still don't have my paid-for credit, so it's pretty and fun to explore, but useless as a phone.

Have sent Orange an email! Meanwhile - the phone. Lots of nice touches, but the Orange App Shop, and Orange Games, are purely there to sell stuff. Hold yr finger down on the screen and pick up the Android page instead.

It has 5 front pages, each one featured differently ,not sure why. But useful when you run out of space for widgets on one.

Easy to use as a phone, light and comfortable to hold and carry in a pocket.

Battery power (if you leave Bluetooth and wireless on) is about 1-2 days. Its automatic power-down when not in use is invaluable, though I increased it to 2 minutes from one.

So - nice phonem, shame about Orange. Won't be buying my next one from them.

Photos are easy and both camera and camcorder are easy to use, though the camera is basic - no flash, no extras, 3.2 MP. Fine for what I want.

The radio, I had to set up all the frequencies I wanted to use and save them. Sadly, again, it only saves them as numbers, not names, so you need to remember those too! But good clear sound, and I imagine music is the same.

It seems to have a 2GB SD card inbuilt, which if true is impressive, but I haven't explored that yet.

I bought mine yesterday with the pay-in-advance £120 deal. You pay a years worth of monthly £10's up front and get £60 off the phone. So £160 buys you the phone and a years worth of £10 a month credit.

Anonymous 25 October, 2010 10:48

I tried the SF in the shop and was rather disappointed with the camera. Apart from the irritating non-turn-off-able faux shutter noise, (" It's the law") the total shutter lag was about _one second_. I'd estimate that only a small proportion of that time was for the focusing (yes, real focusing). It felt like early-1990s camera technology.

If it's possible to speed up the camera, then please chip in.

I really like this phone, I connect it to my Sky wifi at home and I am really impressed with how easy it is to use. I wanted a smartphone on payg and even if I end up paying the extra £5 a month for extra mb, for me it is better than being tied to an18month contract.
My phone fund knocked a tenner off the price too.

Best bet is to get it unlocked and go on something like Virgin's "unlimited" internet - 1GB/month: proper 1 gig(1024MB, not 1000MB). Also load it with the latest Opera Mini browser, which can reduce web page usage by up to 90%.

Excellent well specced device, however I'm waiting for the white version, due out later this year according to orange.

BTW is it true this thing has a G-sensor?

Are there any issues with the default internal memory being only 150Mb? I heard that ZTE blade in some countries will be providing the internal memory of 512Mb. My question is that could there be any performance degradation of having a very small internal memory or it wouldn’t matter as long as I could add a bigger micro SD card for external memory? Is internal memory implies to RAM only?

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 30 November, 2010 18:04

Sombody probably has allreayd noticed this but ill say it anyway, it doesnt have capactive just resistive but its an excelent resistive screen. its not original to orange either its actually a ZTE Blade, in the vid he said "our very own" i just thought "Noope". still a great phone as i shall find out at christmas :P

Anonymous's avatar

Anonymous 1 December, 2010 09:13

This definitely has a capacitive screen (with multi-touch). It even says so in the documentation that comes with the phone which I have had since October.... I do know that the European version of the ZTE Blade actually comes with an LCD screen instead of an AMOLED one, a 5 mega pixel camera instead of 3.2 mega pixels but 256 MB RAM instead of 512MB. Check out the variations on GSMARENA.

Yes, inasmuch that you are limited to the number of apps you can download: the apps do not work from the SD card as far as I understand, but they apparently do with Froyo.

At present I get a memory reading of 61MB/208 (via AppMonster).

Some facts-
Bought one last weekend in UK:
It does have 512M (not 256M as post above)
I've plugged a 16G card in and it works fine (not 8G as post above)
Pretty sure its an OLED- its pretty difficult to tell compared to LCD- its a fantastic display eitherways
It has a cap touch screen- you can't do multitouch with resistive.
Camera is 3.2Mpixels, no flash.

I m using it since it launch in UK, Good phone Value for money, I do manage my all yahoo chat, mail and small surfing with this phone, great speed and performance for £99. Only I don't like is its battery life, if you use it to make call or to receive call battery life is OK, but if you surf or chat or internet use then its battery life is poor, wont last for one working day. text message limit is too low, I mean limit for writing text message is very low, a small message consume your two message value, I don't know how to increase text limit for one single message. Music quality is not good, just play and listen. camera is OK, better to not take picture in low light.

In the UK magazine PC Pro, Feb 2010, Paul Ockenden,
who describes his column as
"the most-read specialist smartphone column in the UK"
says:

The San Francisco is "a bargain for a brilliant little phone".
He also says that you can unlock it.
He adds: "Overall I'm quite smitten by [it] as are a couple of my friends
who've bought the device, but who've gone on to spend more to
get it unlocked."
He uses words such as "stunning" and "streets ahead
of other cheap Android phones."

Perhaps he should confer with his colleague who reviewed it online at PC Pro
on 27Dec2010 (perhaps for the March 2010 magazine) who is less keen.
He thinks the screen is unresponsive.

But...
On the TechRadar website a recent buyer of the phone, neon123, says:
"The San Francisco felt really sluggish out of the box compared to
the HTC, but after installing "LauncherPro" everything
scrolled as smoothly as I was used to."

Perhaps one or two people could comment on the above,
especially if you have installed LauncherPro.

Thanks.

I purchased this phone a week ago to find out what all this talk about Android is all about (as I was an Android virgin until now, even though I consider myself quite a bit of a tech-head!). I'm seriously blown away by Android as it completely rewrites the rules on what you can do with a mobile phone compared to my last non-smart phone handsets. Really briliiant! This fone generally works smoothly. But have found when you've opened a couple of different apps one after the other, the phone seems to slow down majorly. Don't know if this is because I'm not exiting apps properly & therefore leaving more than one running at same time!? But this is fixed by switching it off & on & it's back to normal speed. Maybe I need to study the manual a bit closer to see what I'm doing wrong or it could be the processor can't handle you opening too many apps in succession! Otherwise a great fone & Android is amazing (glad I didn't sign up to 2 years contract for an Iphone4 as didn't fancy being 'enslaved' to the same technology for so long!). Thinking of getting the new Sony Xperia Arc when it's released in few months as has Android 2.2 Gingerbread with guaranteed free upgrade to 2.3 when it's released later on this year!

I've had this phone a few days now and I love it. It has all the apps my old iphone had and it's easy and simple to use. I have had a problem with it though - if I'm on the phone, occasionally the person on the other end will not be able to hear my voice and I realise that the caller screen has changed to call log. My voice can then be heard again if I press back and it goes back to the caller screen, but it happens quite a lot and is a bit annoying. Is there some way to lock the screen when you're on the phone to stop this from happening? Or do I have an actual problem with my phone?

Thanks

I bought one a week ago. Very disappointed. Web browser is poor compared to my iPod. I have to recharge daily. The mail function ( on pay as you go) ceases after 2 weeks unless you pay more. The camera is useless in anything but bright light. The screen goes blank and will not work unless I pull the battery out. The wifi has to be forced to connect to my home broadband - it is happy to carry on using 3G unless I force it to switch then it keeps dropping out ( this does not happen with both my laptops and my iPod)

As for the 100MB usage for £10 top-up, I find it more than enough and I login to Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter and update my status multiple times a day & also browse! I have never used more than 25% of my Data Allowance!

I don't think there is a better Android Phone in this Price range out there at the moment but I'm sure that will change!

It's an amazing phone, even if it wasn't dirt cheap. The oled capacitive display rivals anything HTC has out there had mine for over a month now and still love it !

I bought this phone, and for me the most important problem is the battery! I must plug my phone one or two times a day, if I use Wifi or listen music!
Does somebody know how to update Android on this phone?

This phone is so easy too unlock for free"google it",,you can change the rom of which there are many ,,"google it",,,i run it on Tmobile,,no issues,,the battery is poor but as standard to all smartphones is so normal.
As far as i know keep well away from the crappy white one as that will deffo be TFT but i hear that there is a shortage of the amoled screens anyhow,,again look on "google2 and you will find number codes to type in the dialer that will instantly tell you the screen type.
Compared to other names like HTC etc you really can not go wrong with this phone,,,the only sad thing is ,is finding a back cover that will change the orange symbol on the back but thankfully i was able to get original back covers in mettalic blue and cherry red and now the phone look great..due to the not been able to get original covers for the back i have so far sold 68 of these which has enabled me to buy three more of these phones as i stocked up on 200 covers so its even possible to make money from this cool phone,,now that has to be great ...

Hi people. Who can buy me a San Francisco and sent to Ukraine. Everything is very honest. For themselves. I would be very grateful. E-mail ssidorroff@yandex.ru Thanks

Anonymous 23 March, 2011 10:12

for all you noobs out there ,,,just go on google and type San francisoc unlock code ,,,you will get it for free,,plus just do a google search about the phone,,,all the info to all the questions are on here ,,,
and "root" your phone is not like the holly grail or anything ,,,alls root does is allow you to access everything on your phone,,meaning you can delete if you like what ever you want ,,think of it like "vista" but with out that annoying command thing all the time you want to do anything,,to root your phone is nothing special really.
Just read online about the phone,
And anyone who wants a cherry red original back cover ,,send me an email ,,,i sell them for £6

This phone can be unlocked for FREE - just go to orangesanfrancisco.co.uk and do it for free

The Ornage internet cap is LOW but go to 3 PAYG for 1GB data or O2 if your on broadband with them for cut down ISP costs and 500mb data.

Beware - when youre credit runs out, or you go over the £5 topup of internet, the phone will rape your credit with data charges.

Battery life, poor, doesnt last a day of internet usage (facebook chat etc.) so i plufg it into usb at work. Camera is ok actually - its no 8mp xenon flashed wonde rlike my old LG but its fine.

SOME will take 2.2 froyo but not all.. and not mine :( the screen just does not work ;( BUT the orange rom is fine, it does everything i want and can still be rooted for free. BUT two of my mates at work have done it without issues so its hit and miss (oled or tft - the tft is hit and miss oled wil lwork 100%)

Brilliant phone for the price, but removing all the Orange crap is a must. Had it unlocked and running Android 2.2 in under an hour with the help of orangesanfrancisco.co.uk, very easy to follow.
Just get a decent SIM-only deal (e.g. GiffGaff) and you can't go wrong.

The phone does not seem very good value, and it seemed Android smartphone with 2.1 and a decent appearance, though a simple hardware. But a small internet free add that worries us - is a natural gorge on the Android phone.

I have literally just received my new white orange san francisco on pay monthly and when I bought it offline my dolphin plan said I was entitled to 200 minutes, unlimited texts, 250 mb internet use, and email access and for only £20 per month! Bargain! BUT ive just logged and registered my phone online to see my account and usage and Ive also spoken to MANY indian callers that I couldnt understand for help - It says I have 6 minutes remaining (I havent even rang anyone yet!) PLUS this article has answered by query better than the indian callers - He said I am only entitled to100mb per month and then tried to sell me £5 mb top ups! BUT my contract said 250mb! when I bought it -----what a con.... He said I had 'misinterpreted' the MB but really I know exactly what deal I bought....plus it said on my plan overview online £20.50 per month - but ive just found out on a help page that they charge you extra for your first month...Im new to a contract and Orange network but already im pretty dispointed with everything but the phone pretty groovy thats all :)

fedup 6 October, 2011 12:05

got this as part of contract 10.50 p.m.
1 cannot use with gel nails
2 cannot use with normal sized fingers
3 too sensitive screen
4 cannot add words to T9 directory
5 cannot use one-handed in any circs
6 cannot get suitable case to hold it as it's too thin and slippy
7 battery runs down as you watch it!
8 Orange will not allow another phonbe option once this has been given to you on contract
10 only got £30 for it when i sold it and bought myself a fantastic Tocco lite from Samsung which has tap-screen facility and lets me use it one-handed when shopping/walking dog/ holding bags/walking along.
basically San Francisco has been accurately aimed at the market of users who do not own: home pc/laptop/Bose sound system at home/iPod and docking station/ Digital Camera /Own home.......kids!!!!
It's not fit for purpose for anyone over 30

I have had this phone for about a year, it works well and I am over 30! :-) Ha ha ...
I bought this, unlocked it, stripped off the orange stuff and went on another pay as you go, rolling contract. It is a great budget phone. My hubby has the HTC desire, which is obviously loads better, but this is fine for me. Links with my google well and I just charge it every night. I downloaded an app that helps me easily turn of the roaming stuff to prolong the battery life and so it all works well. I think with these sort of things, phones like this are a steal, if you have a little bit of techy knowledge or can look it up on the web.
