Nokia Lumia 920 has PureView camera, wireless charging

Nokia has unveiled the Nokia Lumia 920, set to be the first Windows Phone 8 phones to hit shops -- bringing with it a PureView camera and wireless charging.

The Lumia 920 sports a 4.5-inch high-definition curved glass screen that adjusts colour and brightness according to the light level when you're out in sunlight. It also features wireless charging, which means you don't need a cable to boost the 2,000mAh battery -- just plonk it on a charging pillow to juice up.

It also packs PureView camera technology, based on the Nokia 808 PureView -- except without the whacking great 41-megapixel sensor, obviously. Instead it has a 'floating lens', which adjusts for the infinitesimal movements of your hands as you hold the phone to take a picture.

On board is Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software. Windows Phone 8 includes a new home screen, which lets you resize the software's signature coloured squares. It also improves maps, voice control and support for high-definition screens.

Built-in apps include indoor maps, and sat-nav that automatically tells you how long your commute will take. Nokia also shows off City Lens, an augmented reality app that shows you information about the shops and bars on any street you point the camera at.

It's important for Nokia to get these new phones in shops tooty sweets, with the current Lumia line-up left high and dry by Microsoft's decision to cut off Windows Phone 7 phones from new software updates, new apps and new features.

These are the first Windows Phone 8 phones to actually appear in the flesh, after Samsung heralded the Ativ S last week but didn't have any to show to the world. Meanwhile HTC unveils its Windows Phone 8 phones on 19 September.

Are these latest Lumias genuine rivals to the iPhone and Android, or is Nokia doomed to also-ran status? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Wireless charging is pretty cool. In 2 years, Apple will have invented it.

Wireless charging sounds sweet
Not 200 mah
2000
lol, yeah apple will invent wireless charging and NFC in the iphone 5/6
would buy, but I just don't think the windows 8 on a phone is as good as android. A ubuntuphone, maybe made with the coming soon samsung nexus could be awesome though

Strangely enough, Apple have already been working on on-board wireless charging, according to a report on this very website back in June 2011.

Will it be included on the new iPhone ?

Looks nice. Exactly what was expected really. I like the wireless charging the the sound of the screen. Still waiting for the iPhone announcement and then it will be a toss-up between that and the SG3 for me...

4.5 inches plus all that extra real estate around the screen is too big. why are all the high end phones being made with such massive screens and hence making the phones massive? 4 - 4.3 inch screens with minimal bezels please manufacturers. As pretty as this phone is it's just not practical unless i'm wearing hip hop clothing ranges and i dont! :)

Great phones. Can't really say much I personally like the Windows OS out of all the operating systems out there because it is radically different. But the lack of apps put me off. Hopefully, this year more apps for Windows will be developed. Android. Why doesn't Nokia release an Android phone? It makes perfectly good business sense to diversify ones company. According to Sky News Nokia's shares have dropped 15% since announcing this phone.

Nokia would do amazing with an Android phone! But it'll never happen. Microsoft love to stifle any competition, which I why I will never buy their products. Got to have some principles =)

Nokia have now got all their eggs in one basket, with moving everything into W8.
Make or break time - failure will be curtains for them.

Interesting that Samsung, HTC and others are also going full tilt into W8 too.
A lot will depend on the W8 OS launch. If it generates good vibes and an upturn in sales, the knock on effect for W8 phone sales can only be positive.

Nokia should also make Windows 8 tablets too, like some of its rivals are.

Fed up with companies like Cnet. Who do you think you are? 'intriguing features' of being able to see it in sunlight, wireless charging and being able to navigate with gloves on - .... only like some of the most practical issues being solved in mobile phone tech. Yet, to you it's just an intriguing feature? How much do iPhone pay you to be their mouthpiece?

[same commenter as above]

and by the way, it's not as if I even own a Nokia. I use android and have nothing in particular against iPhone's. I think there's lots of quality out there. But the bias that is shown by CNet staff is sometimes just mindblowing and you should be ashamed
