Nokia Lumia 920 and 800 get Windows Phone 8 and 7.8 updates

Updates are arriving for both Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.8, and should be hitting the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 800 any minute.

The update to Windows Phone 8 will save the Lumia 920 from randomly rebooting without any warning, a problem that's affected the new phone since launch.

Dutch site WP7.nl reports that Netherlanders can update their older Lumia 800 phones via the Zune software earlier than expected. But at the time of writing, the update has yet to board the ferry at the Hook of Holland to head to Hull or Harwich here in the UK -- my unlocked Lumia 800 is detecting no updates just yet.

Fingers crossed the UK networks will quickly push out the update to the three-and-a-half people that own current Lumia phones.

Windows Phone 7.8 gives you more flexibility in the size and layout of the signature colourful live tiles on your home page, animated with updates on your new messages, photos and more. That and a new Xbox tile are pretty much the only new feature coming to 7.8, sadly, as existing Lumia phones are cut off from the latest Windows Phone updates.

The Windows Phone 8 update sparked controversy when Microsoft revealed that existing phones would not benefit from the update, and would even find that new apps built for Windows Phone 8 wouldn't work on current phones. That effectively makes lame ducks of the Lumia 800 and its ilk, receiving new features in a piecemeal fashion with the 7.8 update.

This month the Nokia unveiled the Lumia 620, set to be the cheapest Windows Phone 8 phone yet. Meanwhile the Nokia Lumia 920 is currently only available on EE, the 4G network formed by the merger of Orange and T-Mobile, but it will come to other networks in the new year.

I have a gorgeous white Lumia 900. I've always used Nokia phones because I believe that iPhones and Androids are stupid :)

Just got my white Lumia 920! That makes 3 of us. WP8 is clearly the freshest and most forward looking OS. The app advantage is all that's keeping iOS and Android ahead. But the tide will change once developers start developing for both windows 8 and WP8. Btw,I used the 3gs , 4s and and Android previously.

I have been waiting for the Lumnia 920 for a year after getting a hint from an O2 Guru. Sadly my HTC Windowr 6.5 phone died and I purchased a 710 which I am more than happy with.

Win 8 OS is fresh, intuitive and a lot less complex to use than the IOS and Android. I find that I can get much more done with less swipes in Win 7.5 not to mention 8. Apps? That's not to much of a problem and the missing ones I cam live without. Now I am thinking about getting a Surface for full integration. I am definately sold on the Windows ecosystem.

Come on, Rich, sales weren't that bad! ;)

I got the 820. The carrier restrictions and sheer heft of the 920 put me off.

What's up with the ignorant and lame remark? you do know that Lumia's are being sold out everywhere?
Rubish journalism.

I just want to make stuff clear. The 920 IS NOT only available on the EE 4G network. I have mine on 3G as I don't want or need 4G. There is a choice. Also, people banging on about the battery should be aware that Smartphones are essentially a very powerful handheld computer with a phone added. If you leave Mobile Network and WiFi connections switched ON - your battery will drain quicker. I'm no reviewer so I wish the 'professionals' would get their facts sorted. Nuff said.

Its called a joke, good buddy. And you do know that Windows Phone has 4.5 per cent market share at the last count?

Rubbish spelling.

Anonymous at 15:06, the 920 is only available on EE, but you can get it on a 3G or 4G contract. Perhaps I should have been clearer, but the facts are correct. Also I agree you with your points about battery life, but wouldn't it be nice if we could leave Wi-Fi etc on and get decent battery life? Nuff said

I have a lumia 920, but I'm quite skinny. I must be the half a person

On a serious note I do get a full days battery out of my 920 and I use it for lots of things. Like writing my comment to this story.

Windows Phone is going from strength to strength recently, and rightly so!
The step up from 7.5 to 8 is brilliant. But still room for improvement.
Ive done a quick blog on Windows Phone 7.8 update, and people opinion on it.

"The three-and-a-half people that own current Lumia phones." Obviously WP is miles behind iOS and Android in sales but it has to start somewhere doesn’t it? I get that it’s a joke but the average Joe who’s looking to buy a new phone and perhaps doing some research on CNET articles will see things like this and assume WP is not the best option when for some it might be.
"Desperate lack of apps in the Windows Phone 8 store" yet you still haven't developed one for it yourself when you have iOS and Android equivalents so can't really criticize.
"Do you own a Windows Phone? Tell us why you prefer to iOS or Android" ...in the context of CNET’s general approach to WP this comes across as suggesting it's an inexplicable decision to choose Windows Phone over the other two? Do we have to justify it?
CNET are really letting themselves down here in my opinion. I own a Lumia 920 Windows Phone (very happy with it btw) and like to come here to keep up to date with new developments for it. It’s a deterrent when there seems to be a put-down in every article I read on here. I can't understand how Windows Phone-specific websites manage to be more balanced and impartial towards the platform than CNET...

I have been a Nokia Fan since Mobile Phone was invented. Been a Windows Phone fan since year 2000 with windows mobile 3.1. I have actually waited for the convergence of my two favorite devices for almost 12 years with great disappointment with my Nokia Lumia 800 Windows phone 7.5 Mango. More than half the windows mobile 6.5 functions that I have been using with my HTC Windows Mobile 6.5 device is no longer available on the new windows phone os. I tried to cope with the painful transition to the new os for half a year before finally abandoning all hopes and migrated to Android. FYI. The Android OS is what the Windows Mobile OS used to be but a lot better.

I have had my Lumia 920 for the past two weeks and I am very happy. I heard the stories of poor battery life, the weight and size issue, etc. I get 24 hours run time (heavy usage), and everything seems to work perfectly. Fortunately, I have big hands so the size is comfortable.

Before I moved to this platform, I used a Galaxy III and iPhone 4s. I was weary at first and kept my iPhone as backup. It hasn’t been necessary to “roll back”. In fact I tried using my iPhone the other day and found the operating system "old" if that makes sense.

Not funny.
And criticising spelling, how clever.

I feel like an idiot for buying a Lumia 800, it's lacks many obvious features like call duration, or being able to paste in a phone number *(meaning if you're browsing, and the number isn't click to call, you'll be reaching for a piece of paper).

Worst of all, it has let me down on the most basic of tasks... most recently no signal in London late at night when lost... and then telling me I'm two streets across from where I was.

Add to that a sealed battery, when it's bricked, who knows when it'll wake up.

Windows Phone 7.5, at the very least, will go down as both my worst technology purchase... and the 7th and final Nokia I'll ever buy.

I just made my move from Android to Windows Mobile 8. I got a yellow Nokia 920 and it is great. The OS is simple and easy and very fast and besides from Spotify i currently have all the apps I need. Why did I move? Well Android was pretty cool but a bit messy and thet need to put some control on their market. iOS was simply outdated and looks very stale and old. So i went with the fresh looking kid on the block. No regreds so far...

I have a Nokia 800 and I've got to say its the best phone I've had but the only let down is the marketplace, got to say android is better for apps and games but that is just my opinion! But to be honest when it comes to an upgrade I am definitely sticking to windows and will definitely be getting the newest Nokia that's going coz in time im sure windows marketplace will over take android!!!

LUMIA 800 is ok, but Android JB devices are better IMHO, the WinPhone devices are to closed, you cannot root them at least not easily (i.e. get access to the "whole" phone, normally to upgrade its operating system on your own). If you love tweaking your phone, adding bits and pieces to it (softwarewise) do NOT go for WPhone, get a new Android phone woth a decent processor and you will be able to upgrade its Operating System on your own. If you want to text, call, send emails, listen to music and don't really care about making your phone your dream pocket computer, WinPhone or an iPhone is probably a good choice for you (I am using WinMobile, WinPhone and Android)

Windows Phone 7.5 is a beautiful OS but that's kind of it, it has many bugs and shortcomings. It's a shame, it's actually stupid of Nokia not to rapidly release software updates for the phones with 7.5 because they lose a lot of market. I myself won't buy another Lumia because of Nokia's stupid policy and won't recommend others buying them. It's not that they're not good handsets, but the lack of support/bug fixes and also lack/price of apps made me change my mind about WP handsets.
Microsoft's aim was to build a robust and hardware compatible OS like the iOS, unfortunately, from my point of view, they're very far off and WP handsets will never have the market share both producers and Microsoft hope for.
