Update: Nokia has denied the Lumia 800 will not be available SIM-free. Read more details here. Original story follow.
Bad news Nokia fans -- the Nokia Lumia 800 SIM-free model has been held back until January next year.
That means you'll need to buy into a contract if you want to get your hands on Nokia's first Windows Phone device this side of Christmas. The news comes via online retailer Clove, which confirmed on its blog that the Lumia 800 wouldn't be arriving SIM-free in the UK until 2012.
It's going to be available exclusively on contracts from 16 November, but we would recommend holding off if you can possibly bear it -- signing up to a brutally long contract is usually much more expensive in the long run than buying outright.
The Nokia Lumia 800 is a tasty bit of hardware, with a 1.4GHz processor and an 8-megapixel camera. The real headline feature however is that it's running Windows Phone, Microsoft's trendy alternative operating system.
Windows Phone wants to beat Apple's iOS and Google's Android systems, both of which are hugely popular. We like Windows Phone a lot, and the hope is that with Nokia's recognisable name and hardware heritage it can bump Microsoft's OS into the mainstream.
This delay could damage those lofty aspirations -- generally speaking people aren't feeling too flush post-Christmas, and will be much less inclined to drop hundreds of pounds on a fancypants smart phone.
What do you think? Will the wait until January for SIM-free phones hurt the Lumia 800's chances? Let us know down in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

a bit of tabloid over sensationalsing there by cnet. how many people truly buy a brand new sim free phone? i'm betting the percentage is very small compared to upgrades and contracts. personally i get all my phones second hand now so by the time i'm due to either upgrade or fancy a change this bad boy will have dropped in price massively!

how is buying a sim free card telephone cheaper than on the contract??? if you won't be using it for calling then yeah otherwise...

More comedy reporting from CNET. You guys really are a bit rubbish these days.
The official UK site clearly shows you can buy PAYG from 3. You can then unlock it as required.

In addition to 3 at £399 SIM free the Lumia 800 is also available at Carphone Warehouse SIM free at £469.95. Luke, 'Delayed' !!! the Lumia 800 is shipping out of our factories this week and will be available in UK retail at CPW, P4U, Vodafone, T-Mobile, 3 & Orange from the 16th November. Feel free to contact me or the Nokia UK Press office if you need to clarify any further facts on availability. Regards Ray at Nokia

Sim free is a joke anyways and well over priced. I have a contract and i confirmed with the company for a lumia on 18 months at £25 a month making total of £450. Now the cheapest SIM free is £400 so after a couple of months paying for a monthly contract or top ups with payg your well above the price. Plus you have to lump up the cash in one hit. I really dont think sim free sales will have much effect on overall sales.

Could ray clarify if this effect contract deals from small independent retailers ie buymobilephones and mobilphonesdirect? It's all good saying there are deals but what about people that preorders from these places will they have stock?

I am a great supporter of nokia but they have a history of late release dates. Nothing to be proud of there. My question ia if the phone can be made available to networks why can they not be available sim free at teh same time. Is this a ploy to force people into being tied to mobile phone companies. Maybe a court should rule on the legallity of this move by nokia.
Already HTC have a very nice EVA 3D phone out as do LG. They seem more attractive than waiting for sim free nokia espcially if nokias price is going to be high
