Ready for the closest look yet at the shape of the iPhone to come? Then check out this video, which shows off the frame of the next generation Apple phone next to the current iPhone 4S.
The video shows the backplate of the purported new iPhone, which is not only taller than the current model, but features a number of changes. Press play below to see the two phones side-by-side, as compared by component supplier ETrade Supply:
The part in question is the aluminium unibody casing of the suspected new iPhone. It appears closer to the design of the original silver-backed iPhone with its black bands at the top and bottom rather than the current design, which features a metal band around the edge and a glass front and back. Doing away with the glass back should help it stand up better to cracking when dropped, a common problem with iPhones.
It's the same width as the 4S, just taller, so when you turn it sideways you'll get a more widescreen view of your games and movies. The screen measures 4 inches corner-to-corner, as previous leaks have suggested.
It's also thinner than the 4S, which has come to feel quite chunky compared to some of this year's superslim phones.
The round volume buttons, the hold switch, lock button and home button are all in the same places. But the headphone socket has moved to the bottom of the phone, alongside a much smaller gap for a dock connector that's smaller than the traditional connector found in previous iPhones and iPads.
Another big change which sees a component get smaller is the SIM-card slot. It's smaller than the current micro-SIM tray, suggesting the new iPhone will be the first to use the newly agreed nano-SIM card.

Complete waste of time. Any phone dropped on its screen likely to crack sometimes screen may still work some times not. My iPhone 4 was dropped on its screen and just like the Samsung example it did not work again. It depnds on how exactly it contacts the ground..

There is NO logic to the above comment - by your same reasoning then touch screens are also a complete waste of time :-|

Seeing as Android app developers have to test their Apps on all types of phones and screen sizes, will the jump from 3.5 - 4 inch screen make a difference to all previous Apps on the iPhone? ie. will there be black bars? stretched displays?

Hmmmm..... interesting. We will find out sooner or later if this is the real deal.

this looks like sh*t , if the iphone 5 does look like this. im not buying it.
anonymous 8 June, 2012 09:45
it will be 3.9in screen
anonymous 8 June, 2012 09:53
smaller dock connector. annoying.
anonymous 8 June, 2012 10:28
OMG 4" screen on iPhone, tell me all bout how Apple revolutionized the world of smartphones again. LOL. On the article, doesnt look that good tbh, the 4s looks better for me as the smaller dock connector, hmm that gonna be a blow to the ppl who already have iPods and iPads.
anonymous 8 June, 2012 12:11
Possible thunderbolt connector instead of usual connector?
anonymous 8 June, 2012 12:19
4" screen is to little to late!
apple messing things up for them selfs. the s2 showed what people want, and by not learning apple will fall further behind. and now they try to sue s3 again in u.s. why for some stupid reasons. lo they really sinking further and further....
1000118233 8 June, 2012 12:20
Would be nice if they would use the universal standard which is micro usb instead of the usual crap connectors.
anonymous 8 June, 2012 12:26
Smaller dock connector: meaning I'd have to change ALL my chargers, home, work, car, everywhere...
Headphone port moved to the bottom: NO THANKS! - I HATE the iPod Touch.
This is just a load of rubbish,
Oh also, notice there's no 'noise cancelling' mic at the top?
This is 99% not the iPhone 5!
anonymous 8 June, 2012 15:15
Not happy at the new version of the dock connector at all. I have eo many components at home based on the old style!! It better come with an adapter at the very least!! Also moving the headphone jack is dumb.
anonymous 8 June, 2012 15:18
Hate when companys have to make thier own new products so damn proprietary!! Different sd card... Different dock connector... Why apple? Steve jobs is turnin in his grave right now!!
anonymous 8 June, 2012 15:55
I want it! But it has a new doc connecter. I dont care! But it has the head phone jack at the bottom now. -I dont care!, but it will cost more and you will need to buy new accessories. - I dont care!. Its a new Iphone - I want it and I dont care what people say or think! Its new!!!!
anonymous 8 June, 2012 16:16
NOOOO! Why change the headphone plug to the bottom! That is a stupid enough feature in Androids. Apple, get this, WE DON'T WANT ANDROIDS!
anonymous 8 June, 2012 16:17
/\
totally agree. Apple should leave the headphone jack on the top.
flyingacedude 8 June, 2012 20:04
Its on top on my S3...
Either way I think that there is a good chance this is the real deal. Its in line with lots of other rumors that have been floating about. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple themselves leaked the part to draw some of the press/public attention away from the S3.
anonymous 9 June, 2012 02:36
Samsung should have patented devices larger than 3.5 inches. Apple patents their rectangle, why not patents the size lmao XD
jus 11 June, 2012 23:42
Well i just bought the Iphone 4s just over a week ago, so i want a refund if the iphone 5 comes out this month.........
anonymous 12 June, 2012 12:08
Looks like they are going to be using the unibody design in all of their products now, it makes sense, it saves space and gives them a tough shell so it wont break as easy :) I want one xD i also agree with the comment about the thunderbolt port, it does look around the right size.
anonymous 15 June, 2012 13:17
this looks amazing, my only worry is that the phone wont fill your hand. As it is the same width as the iPhone 4s, which doesn't fill my hand (annoying) it will be uncomfortable to hold especially if it is a taller device.
tomfromaardvark 5 July, 2012 15:40
LOL all those thousands of pounds Apple customers have spent on various iPhone accessories made completely useless and redundant by Apple's change of dock connector.... just another example of Apple forcing customers to buy new products.... Android, and specifically Google, may not be perfect when it comes to updates etc but least they arent covertly screwing you in the @rse!

People need to sit down and chill! This is a prototype, a mockup, probably one of a few conceptual designs that apple used to test in different situations. As for the smaller dock...interesting that most people mention "old dock" in their complaints...if Apple or any other manufacturer never changed the way their devices connect or charge then we would still be using Nokia 3310's and Wifi would be a myth! Change is innovation, and innovation is moving forward in the way we use technology.
With that said you will most likely be able to buy a connector to comet your NEW iPhone to OLD chargers if thats what you really want to do.
Wait for the official launch before you freak out over design elements that might turn out to be great...a smaller dock might mean a new way of charging your iPhone faster...Apple is one of the most successful companies in it's field, so I think it goes without saying that they would probably not design a phone without taking everything their customer's love and need into consideration!
AND lastly if you HATE the new design so much (once it launches officially), then keep the phone you have right now...ultimately it's up to you to spend your money on what you want! No one is forcing your to buy a phone you don't like...chill bitches chill! :)
