New iPhone 5 glimpsed from the front in leaked photos

You've seen what the new iPhone looks like from the back -- now feast your eyes on what Apple's next blower will look like from the front.

New leaked photos published by Chinese blog Apple.pro purportedly show the front section of the new iPhone casing -- and it's not much different from the old one. There on the right of the picture is the space for the single home button that's been a feature of the iPhone from day one, with the round hole on the left of the shot making space for the FaceTime video-calling camera, now moved to the centre of the face.

Chiming with previous leaks, the frame reveals the new phone is a slightly different shape to the current model. It's been stretched out so the touchscreen becomes a widescreen 16:9 display when turned sideways. Previous models have had a squarer aspect ratio, so movies have black bars at top'n'bottom. But on the new phone, fillums will fill the full space of the screen.

Although we can't tell exactly from this picture, the new screen is rumoured to measure 4 inches corner-to-corner.

If it's real, the frame also seems to confirm there will be a white version of the new iPhone. This is the white frame -- the black thing in the picture is the inside of the purported case, which I've used it in the main picture above because it shows up better. Here's the full snap:

This is only the latest leak related to the new-look iPhone. We've previously seen leaked snaps of the rear casing, which reveals the stretched shape as well as a new, smaller dock connector. That new connector will save space inside the phone, which could be taken up by a bigger battery or more powerful components -- but it does mean your current dock and cables will be obsolete.

Whether it's called the iPhone 5 or just the new iPhone -- like the latest iPad, officially dubbed the new iPad -- the next Apple phone will also feature new iOS 6 software, with new maps apps, Facebook integration and assorted other improvements.

Are you excited about the iPhone 5? Are you tempted to wait for the new iPhone or go ahead and buy a phone now? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

I'm excited about the iPhone 6, if that's what your asking… after all, this IS the sixth iPhone!

How totally underwhelming. It's pretty much identical to the old one.

Still think they should call it the iphone 4 XL.

Nice of them to make it look so radically different to the last one lol

It'll be an excellent phone, no doubt. Does look as if it will continue to not be too comfortable sitting in the hand with the same sharp edges though.

I'm not going on this being the real deal, partly because the white version has a different layout to the black version.

@tgw123

Couldn't agree more. As ergonomic as a brick. Not exactly smart for a company who bang on a lot about good design.

If it is a 16:9 screen Apple will be free to claim the invented the 16:9 ratio and sue everyone else that makes a widescreen device...

@ anonymous 10:37

I don't think they are different, the black one just appears to have been flipped over to show the under side.

As for the phone I have nothing constructive to say so I will refrain from commenting lest I be accused of trolling the Apple folk ;)

If it's going to have those sharp 90 degree glass edges again, I will hold on to the 4S.

The tapered 3G/3GS was far more ergonomic - why change something that wasn't broke?

Not so much an iPhone 5. but an iPhone 4S-S, by the looks of it.

Let's face it, it's not going to be much different from the iPhone 4, is it?

"Are you excited about the iPhone 5?"

Stop saying that. It's the frikken SIXTH iPhone. Stop perpetuating this nonsense.

I'm selling my iphone 4 and will NEVER ever buy another iphone again!! A 4 inch screen and updated software is not enough I think. I cannot wait for the new NOTE 2. Check the specs of that, thats the one I will be getting, it will be far superior than the iphone 5. When all smartphone screens are now 4.5 +, I think Apple will loose alot of sales this time round fingers crossed:)

Nobody said this is the new iPhone. So u pple need to relax. Apple can't afford to keep the same design as the previous two. That's why I'm kinda waiting to see it. Because if it's not perfect/different. Apple will have lost a customer. And it'll be all about the GS3. I personally think the note is too big to be a phone.

You people crack me up. All you care about is looks. Big screen, small screen...who cares. It's what is under the covers that's different. The biggest change is that is will run on the 4G LTE network.

anonymous 21 July, 2012 15:57

Are they seriously considering this design? it looks like a damn 4!!! I can understand the 4S but the iPhone 5 looks almost the same! What ever happened to innovative design? Come on Apple, I might have to stick with my S3 afterall, which isn't a bad thing.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 July, 2012 03:42

I thought the exact same thing about screen size so bought a GS3 converting from an iPhone 4. I had it for a week and i sold it. What's the point of a massive screen if the software isn't as good as IOS in my opinion. Simple tasks I would do everyday on the iPhone would take twice as long on ICS. Can't wait for the new iPhone.

You do realise all you Apple "Haters" that if you don't buy an Apple it's because you're thick, lacking fashionable intellect and therefore don't fit into the Apple family anyway.

Can't you appreciate the fantastic "design" and fashionable grid icon layout. Surely you want to be a genius family member? Imbeciles.
