LG is rumoured to be hard at work on the Optimus G2, the successor to the still fresh Optimus G. The G2 is set to boast a Full HD display and pack the next version of Android's operating system, Key Lime Pie.
According to LG insiders speaking to MK Business News, the new blower will pack a 5-inch display boasting a whopping Full HD resolution. Under the hood will be a 2GHz quad-core processor, which should make it monstrously powerful.
Its launch has reportedly been brought forward six months to see a
release in the first half of next year. This would put it
in direct competition with its rival Samsung, which is expected to announce the
follow up to its flagship Galaxy S3 -- the Galaxy S4 -- in May.
The Optimus G2 is also rumoured to feature Android Key Lime Pie -- the next version of Android, after Jelly Bean. If LG is indeed hoping to launch the phone in the first half of the year I'd be surprised to see Key Lime Pie on board.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean launched in July and has only just received an update to version 4.2, so I wouldn't expect a major upgrade to be available to manufacturers before the same time next year.
Such an early launch isn't great news for LG fans though, as the Optimus G has only just been announced and is yet to even go on sale here in Britain. If LG is indeed prepping its follow-up so soon, there's very little reason for LG fans to invest in the first model, rather than save pennies for the next iteration.
There's no official word from LG on the matter yet, but keep your eyes peeled for more phone news early next year from CES in January and MWC in February. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on the Optimus G2 in the comments below or over on our Facebook page.

A correction to your article, it was Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that was released in July not 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

I think they'll release the Optimus G priced lower, perhaps even £300. The LG name is tainted, people have had tumultuous experience with their smartphones in the past, and if they price competitively they can come back.

The current Optimus G is effectively the Nexus 4 with minor tweaks and skinned Android.
