LG Optimus 3D vs Nintendo 3DS in 3D display destruction derby

Mobile World Congress 2011

There's this little thing that's pretty big in tech at the moment. 3D -- perhaps you've heard of it? We've gone way beyond the geeky specs 3D of last year, and now all the coolest upcoming gadgets are sporting glasses-free 3D technology.

The Nintendo 3DS was the device that started it all, but now LG is showing off the world's first 3D smart phone, the LG Optimus 3D. We've gone hands- and eyes-on with both devices, but which one packs better 3D tech?

Science!

Both the 3DS and the Optimus 3D display their three-dimensional magic using something called a parallax barrier. That's a slim extra layer on top of the display covered in tiny slits, which means light projected out the gadget's screen is split into two separate paths of light.

Effectively these displays are showing two images at once. Line your peepers up with those beams of light, and you'll get a stereoscopic image, without having to wear any dorky glasses.

The downside is you do have to keep your eyes locked in that rather specific spot. If your head leaves the sweet spot, the illusion vanishes faster than a bunch of tech journalists when it's time to settle the bar tab.

Hit the spot

Having used both devices, we reckon the 3DS is more generous when it comes to that sweet spot. You're not to going to fit more than one person around the console enjoying the 3D effect, but you can tilt the 3DS a good inch or so to the left or right without breaking the spell. The Optimus 3D's sweet spot is very tight, and moving your head (or the phone) just a little will turn the 3D image into a blurry mess.

That's more of a problem for the Optimus 3D, and here's why: loads of mobile games use a smart phone's built-in accelerometer to control the action, so you tilt the phone itself to affect what happens on-screen. But tilting the Optimus 3D even a little will break the 3D effect. Hardly ideal.

The 3DS has an accelerometer too, and we know there are games coming out that use it, and we imagine these titles will suffer from the same problem. But the 3DS crucially is controlled mostly through buttons, or through the lower touchscreen panel, meaning most games won't require you to jig the console itself around very much.

Strong contenders

We've been blown away by the 3D effect on both devices. 3D content effectively halves the resolution of whatever's on screen (because the maximum potential resolution is divided between each eye) but everything we saw still looked pleasingly sharp and bright.

The depth of the effect is extremely impressive, with objects in the foreground seemingly popping out of the screen, and background objects genuinely feeling much further away. It's great fun, and both devices handle the effect with aplomb.

Neither sacrifice 2D imaging either -- the standard Android menu on the Optimus 3D isn't in 3D, but it doesn't suffer from having a 3D-capable display, looking bright and sharp at all times. The 3DS has a slider control to the right of the top panel that lets you dial down the 3D effect (or turn it up), which is impressive, and means you can switch to 2D whenever you want without having to go through loads of menus. Games played on the Optimus 3D have an on-screen slider that serves the same purpose.

Deeper than 3D

So in terms of just 3D, we reckon the 3DS has the Optimus 3D beat. Just. But there are a tonne of other great things about the Optimus 3D -- it's a powerful Android phone for cryin' out loud!

It's got calls, a powerful Web browser with Flash support, access to the Android Market -- where you can download thousands of dirt cheap (or free) games -- and it has two 5-megapixel cameras for taking 3D photos, or capturing 3D footage in 720p. Videos can be uploaded to YouTube's 3D channel, and to top it all off there's a dual-core processor under the hood for running intensive apps and games.

But that has to be balanced against what's sure to be a bumped-up price. If you want a supremely capable smart phone and have the cash to spare, the Optimus 3D brings the 3D funtimes admirably. If you want to enjoy 3D a little more affordably, the 3DS might have fewer features, but we know it's still going to be incredibly enjoyable -- you almost certainly won't get Mario Kart, Zelda and Pilotwings on the LG.

The 3DS seems like gimmicky, underpowered, cheap crap. Much like all Nintendo products. The NGP and Optimus 3D look SO much better.

J4M35 save it! It easy to tell you are a Nintendo hater an it wouldn't matter what nintendo was presenting you would hate it JUST because it is nintendo. Fact of the matter is they are a legendary company that is leading in handheld and home console sales right now.... Take a hike!

J4M35... lame .. the NGP is just a PSP with better graphics and its embarrassing that they had to copy Nintendo with touch game play ... LAME!.. real original Sony.. oh and sort of late Nintendo did that umm what 5 years ago! Also what’s the deal with PS3 "move" .. a little late there too? .. I feel sorry for Sony.. a big company like that having to copy their competitor. Why not come up with your own innovative ideas.. oh wait because Sony is lame! Sure The Wii and the 3DS will not be as powerful as the PS3 and NGP.. but its all about software, innovation and creativity.. and Nintendo has it! Too bad Sony will never understand this, they'll just keep making more powerful machines that don’t sell as good as Nintendo and of course keep stealing other companies ideas. I can see it now ... the year is 2017 ... Sony FGP-3D (Future Generation Portable) .. too late.. oh and one last thing.. how can you mess with Nintendo when their is SO MUCH GAMING HISTORY... lets see a company that has been doing this since the early 80's or a less experienced company that makes other NON game related crap like crappy phones.. I vote NINTENDO! I predict the same outcome as the when the DS came out vs. the original PSP.. and what was that? NINTENDO dominance!

@J4M35: Gimmicky? right, because the Wii was just a "gimmick system", right? So gimmicky in fact that even Sony and Microsoft decided they wanted in on it... And the Gameboy; portable gaming? just a gimmick, right? lol wrong! try INNOVATION.

J4M35, your comment is inestimably uninformed. Nintendo has been a vanguard of the gaming industry since the 80s, consistently ahead of the gaming curve, leading and never following (*cough* Sony *cough). It's funny how many of the same people that dismissed motion gaming as a mere gimmick when the Wii was first released are now amenable to the idea now that it's been copied by both Sony and Microsoft.

Its worth seeing the 3D effect on the nintendo 3DS before saying its rubbish. 3D on the phone is fairly gimmicky at the moment but on the 3DS it really works and adds to the experience.

I thought with paralax barrier that the resolution is fixed, and it is up to the software to render to all pixels or to stretch their images for performance reasons.

Like for example, if your base 2d resolution is 800x480, the physical resolution under the paralax barrier would have to be 1600x480. 2d apps would render to 800x480 and the results stretched to the physical 1600x480. An app for 3d could render 2 800x480 images which are interlaced for the paralax barrier. But to improve performce of rendering an app could render both at lower resolutions if they want.

@J4M35

Yeah sony can be called copystation, it has 4 processors as ps3 does but it can't be used by devs because it's to diffecult to program. So you will buy something that can't be used.
Also it just doenst do something new, its just a previous gen like nds1 with a gfx update.
If you look at nintendo. nintendo will goes always for something unique what always becomes the new standard.
Say move, Say 3d stick, Say rumble, Say flash card. Say touch screen ... and so on.

Dean Shepherd 17 February, 2011 00:03

to be fair I will say sony are good...but do seem to just follow others with no REAL effort put in on their behalf....the move just well...rips off the motion control off the Wii almost the same...just in black with silly glowing balls on...that just look really bad...

yes microsoft followed the same with motion controls but at least they did it DIFFERENTLY...I mean...why didn't sony bother trying it?.

Nintendo actually, for those who didn't know, made some arcade games in the late 70s to early 80s. Then in about 85 they made the NES with arcade quality goodness. Nintendo also has some sort of magazine in each region of the World. Something they started back in the 80s to help them reach out to their customers. Both Microsoft and Sony as far as I lknow don't have a magazine. Nintendo also researches their audience to see what they want and then they deliver. I don't see Microsoft or Sony doing that. Also Nintendo, as stated before this post, is all about the innovation. Microsoft and Sony aren't that original, seriously HD graphics. Nintendo can get away with SD graphics because they use nice bright and thus it isn't needed. Also how many Nintendo games do you of that are meant to look life-like? There might be a few but theres not many. That is why Microsoft and Sony need the HD because they have games with life-like people. While HD is nice it's like the sprinkles on you ice cream, the extra flare. Nintendo's "sprinkles" are not graphics but the storyline and the emotional ties that they have you make with their characters and the music. This is something I have hardly ever found on a Xbox 360 or a PS3.
It would be nice to have Nintendo adopt GTA onto their home consoles.

ummmmmmmm NGP uses capacitative touch screen, like with your thumbs, not the pda like touch the ds, ds lite, dsi, dsi xl, and 3ds,3ds lite, and soooforth. i prefer the NGP just because you get ps3 in your hands and you dont get gameboy resolution. and btw to the comment above devs said the NGP was easy to program, they reprogramed lost planet 2, metal gear solid 4 , little big planet, and killzone 2 in like 2 weeks. and those are ps3 games. i'd probly only get the 3ds for 3d and thats it lol.

I kind of agree with the first poster (fan boy aspect ignored), despite the ninty fan-boy reception he's received. The 3DS is hugely overpriced for some pretty low level tech, the only thing that seems to be used to justify the price is the 3D, which simply doesn't cover the ridiculous money Nintendo are asking for.

I'd personally much rather the Optimus 3D as it's a phone as well, the games are cheaper, if I went for one or the other. I doubt I'll go for either, but I want to see the Optimus in action as I'm looking for a new phone in a little while, whereas I'm not looking for an expensive hand held with pricey games that will end up in the back of my cupboard after a few weeks .

I smell a troll in its developmental stage.. its cool man.. i hope you are "gangsta" or a "thug" because the NGP could only really fit in some HUGE ASS Pants ... That crap is huge.. seriously.. youre going to need a fork lift! .. also, "that" is your reasoning behind buying a product that will most likely be over 350 dollars!.. "because you get ps3 in your hands and you dont get gameboy resolution." WOW, so better graphics = better gaming?... i think you're confused.. its really the software, story telling and innovation that makes gaming a great experience... Hence Nintendo wins! DOWN WITH THE TROLLS!

@Dean Shepherd Sony had motion controls on the PS2, but just decided to not release it, they've had a lot of what ninty has brought to market developed for years. Sony aren't so much copying as leading then dropping the ball at the last minute and realising their 10 year old toys are the same as this new one that's come out that's selling like crazy. Seems like they have the talent to do it all, but struggle to read the market as effectively as Nintendo, then again there was the Virtual Boy and N64 which suggests Ninty don't always get it right!

N64 was not a failure WitchDrAsh... i can list many great games for that console.. or just name 1 that changed gaming UNTIL THIS DAY and is revered as one of the best games of all time! ... Ocarina of Time! I know of very very few people that would disagree... and yup the graphics weren't so great... but like i have said before.. its not always about that. I'm predicting the same future as the PSP.. there will be some upgrades, ("Slimmer" and a actual more portable version "go") BUT in the end it was fail, shrivel, be ignored and die.

The only reason the wii and the ds did so well is the pricing. I personally would not buy a kid a 500 or 600 hundred dollar console so he can spill hi-c on it the wii is cheap thus it sold like crazy I mean think about it like this vizio makes cheap TVs and they sell very well doesn't mean it's better then a bra via just means It's easier on the pockets all a wii is is a gamecube dressed pretty if you don't know that then slap yourself and for all you douches saying nintendo storyline and real gaming when did you ever run around as a pokemon or Kirby or drive in a turtle shell sorry I,like my gaming have grown up you can play with your gay little pokemon I'll continue to drop nukes COD:MW2 BEAST. anonymous 17 February, 2011 15:52 and anonymous 17 February, 2011 15:56 should get together and make a hideous read the following FACTS (Wiki):
" As of December 2010, the review aggregator websites Game Rankings and Metacritic both rank the original Nintendo 64 version as the highest-reviewed game of all time, with average scores of 97.48% from Game Rankings and 99/100 from Metacritic.[89][79] Another review totaliser, TopTenReviews, ranks it at number 78 as of August 2010. The reviews praised multiple aspects of the game, particularly its level design, gameplay mechanics and sound. Former GameSpot reviewer Jeff Gerstmann wrote that Ocarina of Time is "a game that can't be called anything other than flawless",[86] and IGN called it "the new benchmark for interactive entertainment" that could "shape the action RPG genre for years to come".[74] GameTrailers' editors called it a "walking patent office" due to the number of features that became "industry standard".[90] After publication, Ocarina of Time was featured on a number of compiled lists of best or most influential games, including those of Electronic Gaming Monthly,[91] IGN,[92] and Nintendo Power.[93] In June 2009, it was voted as the best game ever in GameFAQs' reader poll.[94] Ocarina of Time has consistently been placed at number one in Edge magazine's "top 100 games" lists: a staff-voted list in January 2000,[95] a staff- and reader-voted list in July 2007,[96] and a list of "The 100 Best Games to Play Today" in March 2009."
AND
"Edge magazine commented in its 2007 "The 100 Best Games" special issue, "[Ocarina of Time] was an astonishing achievement in 1998 and, almost a decade later, still serves as the landmark for its successors and 3D adventure games in general… In a series composed of awfully big adventures, Ocarina may no longer be the prettiest, or even the biggest, but it's still the best of all."

Can anyone give me a list of PS3 and XBOX360 games that aren't shooters or hack 'n' slash or don't involve the use of a gun or bladed weapon, even if that's not the central theme? Just curious about all the "diversive content" I keep hearing about on the HD consoles. Not that I don't enjoy shooters once in a while, but if it's my only choice for 97% of my console's offering, I don't think I would be defending these "awsome exclusives". So other than that, you propose Viva Pinata, LBP (1 and 2), a dancing game and 2 racing games. Out of a total of just over 1300 combined games for X360 and PS3, that works out to a whopping 0.5% of all games aren't shooters or hackers?

I gear myself to one genre?!? I asked for anything outside of shooters and hackers, ie anything but one genre. How the hell aren't you bored with a lineup that consists of FPS, FPS, TPS, hacker, FPS, TPS, FPS, FPS, Gran Turismo, FPS, FPS, TPS, hacker, Viva Pinata?

A gaming platform is less important than the quality of games which come with it. Having a super duper smartphone to play Angry Birds or sudoku is just pointless when you can play M&M Clash of Heroes on a proper portable console.
Similarly I couldnt care aless about phone capabilities on a PSP while Im enjoying playing Tekken, God of War or Valkyria on it.

3ds is great. Don´t talk about graphics because when I saw resident evil mercenaries I think it´s graphically nothing better than this on mobile device. I didn´t see any game on mobile phone wich looks better than this. So I think 3ds is really powerful. Somebody said that it has old technology. How do you know that? Because there aren´t any official technical specifications of 3ds hardware. There were old rumours about 266 mhz cpu but I don´t think they are true when I saw the graphics of 3ds.

Anyone saying they'd choose a LG Optimus for 3D gaming ahead of the 3DS, I have two questions for you.

First will you be wearing a neck brace? Because as this article points out, the Optimus allows no wiggle room for 3D. If you move it or your head even half an inch (less even) you lose the 3D effect. The 3DS screen allows just over 1 inch of tilt/movement left or right before you lose the effect. Its a superior 3D screen, but Nintendo use inferior cheap technology right? ;o)

Second, how will you play any real games? There's very few real games on smartphones full stop, how many 3D games do you think you'll have to choose from? If you're lucky a couple of devs might just make a couple of cheap 3D games, and even then you'll have no proper controls to play them with. With 3DS you'll have hundreds of 3D games soon enough, eventually thousands, and a lot of them will be top notch AAA big budget games.

@WitchDrAsh

Companies research stuff all the time, what matters is putting it into a product, that's what innovation really is. No doubt Nintendo will have been researching motion controls for many years before Wii came out, they've been researching 3D gaming for at least 15 years. So its pretty irrelevant when Sony started research on motion controls when they only came out with it after Nintendo.

The problem is that Microsoft and Sony have brain raped sooooo many people into stupidity gaming. You don't need HD for gaming. You don't need f ing blood and guts flying everywhere to have a great game. You don't need that cuss word every other word.

Wow, some people need to re-learn some of their gaming history. OoT did change the face of a genre and so did Super Mario 64. Those where the N64 two biggest games. What games have Sony or Microsoft brought to the table that have actually changed how to play a game genre? Probably none, and I don't mean 3rd party titles if any of you idiots are thinking GTA or something else. Halo doesn't count, that was a rip off of Metriod. They really look a lot like Samus, in their rip off suits.

Also which company has more big hit franchises? Nintendo.
Let's see they have;
Pokemon
Mario
Zelda
Metriod
Mario Party
Mario Kart
Super Smash Bros.
Kirby
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
and many others

Can any of you even name 5 first party big franchises for Microsoft or Sony?

Sigh, fanboys be they nintendo, sony, or microsoft fanboys fail. Once youy start talking about companies instead of games you'll being playing on the hardware in question you're talking out your ass. Like the article said, due to the interface limitations and the decidely lower amount of quality and quantities of game developers that at least for the time being come hand and hand with smart phones , then in terms of about pure gaming experience you're better off with the 3DS(duh) if you're looking for more of multimedia device the Optimus is the way to go(again duh). And until anyone gets their hands on it the NGP and sees the games available on it, anything said in regards to it is pure speculation leave it that.

in all my life i have never seen so many diehard nintendo fanboy minion trolls in one page! Lets end this... Optimus 3D is best for overall user experience (inclusive of multimedia and phone functionality). The 3DS is best for pure 3D gaming and features- c'mon, its built for it! The NGP or whatever is best for overall solid, intensive gaming. DONE.

its awesome what one simple silly comment started, and look all the nintendo guys started defending their favourite company immediately, look all the passion in some particular comments....conversations like those above makes me think that people really dont have anything else to do....
