LG Optimus 2X dual-core Android phone doubles your fun

The LG Optimus 2X -- also known as the Optimus Star -- is the world's first dual-core phone, and packs an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor to power its Android brains.

The Tegra 2 runs at 1GHz, but LG promises Web browsing and gaming will be faster than with a single-core 1GHz processor -- such as Snapdragon or Hummingbird -- thanks to its two cores. But despite being such a powerhouse, its real advantage could be the power-sipping battery life.

The Optimus 2X has a 4-inch screen with 480x800-pixel resolution, 8GB of storage and support for sticking up to 32GB more in its microSD memory-card slot.

The phone supports 1080p HD playback, but we don't see an HDMI port on it, so you'll have to use DLNA to connect wirelessly to your HD telly. It's also possible LG has sorted out a cable that converts from micro-USB to HDMI, like Samsung did for the Galaxy S.

If you prefer to film your own movies rather than watch someone else's, the Optimus 2X has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for when you're ready for your close-up.

The Optimus 2X will sport Android 2.2 Froyo, despite the fact that the latest version, 2.3 Gingerbread, has already arrived on the Google Nexus S. But don't panic, because LG promises it will be updated at some point, and we don't think Gingerbread has any crucial, life-changing features anyway.

LG hasn't made much of a splash in smart phones lately, although we do adore the LG Optimus One for being so mindbendlingly cheap. The Optimus 2X, with its dual-core processor, could change all that, but we're left with one question -- why didn't LG name it the Optimus Prime?

The Optimus 2X is coming to Korea next month, and LG says we won't be far behind. Click through the images above to see more sides of the Optimus 2X.

"but we're left with one question -- why didn't LG name it the Optimus Prime?"

well quite easy really for two reasons....

1) because naming it would only make MOST people think of the appalling transformer films...only the die hard fans would actually care...everyone else would think it a shitty movie tie in..especially as number 3 is out what? next year or something...
2) and secondly cos thats just stupid....same really calling an entire line now optimus cos now all we get constantly is stupid transformer comments all the time...bleh!

on the plus side that does look like a nice piece of kit...but I've had WAY too many issues with LG in the past...so I think I'll stick to my HTC Desire original..

Transformers roll out!

The 2nd will be called Megatron.

Transformers rocks, end of. Most film versions end up sucking anyway. Luckily Megan Fox was there to save us from complete despair.

somebodys picking bones with a rhetorical question...it was just a joke dude, transformers may have been rubbish as a movie...but it entertained me enough to enjoy it....back to the phone since this is what I THINK the post is about.
if rumour's are true and this phone's screen is VERY BRIGHT and makes the Galaxy S look like a candle from a mile away ....then they should give us a pair of RayBans when we buy the phone

I've not heard that rumour ace, but yea I think I would agree...though im still unsure with LG given their track record, putting flakey shells over an OS system...

though to be fair I havent played with an android LG phone yet, im mostly going on their older feature phone list such as the Viewty, Renoir and Arena for example....good hardware but god damn horrid interfaces..

Dual core... Nice but it really should run at 2ghz if there's two cores of 1ghz
Looks awesome though but needs to prove it can compete with the big boys
And battery needs to be a VERY powerful one

Come on guys, do your research! HDMI out is confirmed, with complete screen duplication.

Also, it has 2 1ghz cores. not 2 cores equalling 1ghz.

Whether they are both clocked at 1ghz remains to be seen however,.

To be honest, I think this phone will be great, a real leap for Android phones over it's main rival, the iPhone and iOS. However, the UI LG have placed on top of Android looks mighty familiar to Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 interface for the Samsung Galaxy S, which, if you look REALLY closely, is almost a carbon copy of the iOS 4.0 OS. What you need is HTC with an original UI, Sense. Stick the Tegra 2 processor and 1GB of RAM in the HTC Desire HD and then we truly have the iPhone killer! :)

"No HDMI port" ??? Did you actually see this phone and use it? It has a HDMI oirt one of it's main selling points. Pointless review
