I've always had colossal respect for the iPhone. Before Apple brought forth its mobile offering, the smart phone world was populated by impossibly nerdy, and often inaccessible, niche products. Now almost universally, consumers consider the smart phone a must-have product.
The iPhone quickly became the best smart phone in the world with the launch of the 3GS in 2009, and since then, it's won every smart phone test I've conducted on The Gadget Show. Samsung's recent high-end competitor, the Galaxy S2, would now beat it, but only just.
The iPhone is undoubtedly one of the greatest technology feats of the 21st century so far, but I've never liked it quite enough to actually part with my money over one. Here's what the new iPhone 5 needs to get my cash:
1. A radio
I find life simply unbearable if I do not have a radio within button-prodding distance and Apple's stubborn refusal to put an FM radio on the iPhone is the primary reason I've never purchased one for myself. And don't tell me that 3G radio is a good substitute -- it isn't. Network capacity and signal prove inadequate for this task, and the bandwidth would zap through my monthly data allowance in no time.
I'm convinced that Apple doesn't bother purely because there isn't any decent FM radio in California, just bland middle-of-the-road pap. But here in Britain we have the best radio in the world and I can't bear to suffer withdrawal symptoms. So let's have FM, and for that matter a DAB radio as well, so I can listen to 6 Music and the World Service.
2. A decent alarm clock
Without a totally dependable alarm clock, I'm a nervous wreck. I lie in bed quivering, unable to sleep in case I don't wake up on time. Unlike every Nokia I've ever owned, the iPhone's alarm clock doesn't work when the phone is off, so I end up leaving the phone on, but forgetting to activate silent mode.
This results in wrong number calls from early morning revellers, nuisance texts from insurance companies or calls from the office who've forgotten that we're filming in the States that week and are ringing up to check next week's dubbing arrangements... at three in the morning local time.
I know Apple isn't alone in this oversight. Most Android phones are similarly afflicted. The result is I carry round a spare Nokia 6303i Classic as my alarm clock. Why can't Apple fix this, or at least give you the option?
3. Better reception
The initial rumpus about the iPhone 4's reception difficulties, 'Antennagate', has been largely forgotten -- even though the problems still exist. If you don't use a rubber bumper the reception slips away all too easily mid-call and isn't that great to start with. When I'm out walking with an iPhone I find myself sprinting up hills mid-call in the hope that I keep my signal.
It's great for the fitness regime, but come on Apple, you've been making smart phones for four years now -- you're paying Nokia for all those technical patents -- it's about time you got this right.
4. A proper flash
The iPhone 4 has a pretty decent camera, except in one important respect -- the flash. The tiny, yet piercing, LED is so hopelessly unfit for purpose it goes beyond red-eye into somewhere far worse -- the almost supernatural realms of fluorescent green-eye. It turns your night-time shots into horror stills, your best friends into zombies.
When I enjoy a night out on the town I want some pleasantly lit memories of my friends enjoying themselves. A better LED flash is the absolute minimum. A xenon flash, a good one like the old Nokia N82's, would be ideal.
5. Plug and Play without iTunes
iTunes and I don't get along very well. In particular I hate the way -- jailbreaking and somewhat questionable third-party applications aside -- you have to use the bloated software to get audio files onto your iPhone that you've downloaded elsewhere. It's just the thing I often need to do in a desperate hurry when I'm about to rush off on a foreign trip or go for a walk.
Finding a computer with iTunes, transferring the file, importing it then transferring it again -- it's all far, far, far too much bother. Can I just plug and play like I do on other phones? Please!
6. Tougher glass
Most phones are tough enough to take the occasional tumble. Not the iPhone. Let it slip out of your hand and the next thing to go flying will be the contents of your stomach as you instantly anticipate the sickening consequences of your momentary carelessness. Judging by the experiences of The Gadget Show office, dropping the iPhone4 is a shattering experience every time, and potentially a very expensive one. Design something tougher.
7. A normal SIM card
Is it really so vital to use those Micro SIM cards that won't fit into virtually every other phone without an adaptor? I'm always testing different phones and I know I'd never have the adaptor with me at the crucial moment. Apple says it can't fit a normal sized SIM into an iPhone because it's so packed full of technology.
Rubbish. Everyone else seems to manage it. Still, at least the iPhone 4 has a SIM card -- there's always the threat they'll use virtual SIMs, presumably to require a purchase through iTunes, with Apple taking 30 per cent of your phone bill.
8. A smoother shape
The first three iPhones were wonderfully friendly to hold. With their smooth edges and roundy-round corners they positively invited you to caress and cherish them. I've always found the iPhone 4 sharp-edged and uncomfortable in comparison. It's like the prototype that should never have made it into production. I want a more approachable, more tactile iPhone again.
9. A faster processor
The iPhone 4 is already feeling a tad lumbering compared to its dual-core rivals from HTC and Samsung, which devour and render Web pages with noticeably more vim. The iOS 5 update will slow things down further and make it lose even more phone races. This is one thing on my list that Apple is sure to deal with. They'd better add more RAM, too -- rivals already have twice the iPhone 4's 512MB.
10. A lower price tag
When you're using an iPhone, everybody sneaks a surreptitious glance to see whether or not it's the latest model. My financially prudent side hates the idea of spending £612 on a phone that will be conspicuously out of date next year.
With other, less expensive phones, nobody really notices how old they are and you can usually make a case for them if it comes to a gadget stand-off -- "The game keypad on my Xperia Play has never been surpassed," or "I bought my old Nokia N8 because it's got the best phone camera in the world."
With an iPhone you're on an expensive treadmill, heading towards compulsive phone update disorder. Feeding the addiction needs to be significantly cheaper.
So what do you think of my list? Would any of these persuade you to buy an iPhone 5? Or will you be getting one regardless. Let fly in the comments section below or on CNET UK's dashing Facebook page.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts too...
The poor phone signal and iTunes being my major two bugbears with my iPhone.
I've always thought iTunes was Apple's way of pushing consumers away from Windows to OSX, because it works great on Macbooks, but is the most awfully slow and bloated piece of *bleep* on PCs.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 10:40
Please......there is no Antennagate problem until you purposefully try to create one........I've had iphone 4 since its onset and never faced it in day to day usage...
anonymous 21 September, 2011 11:10
the Antennagate problem is so bad i gave up and got a andriod phone. best thing i did. Apple is good but not worth the price.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 11:20
As Much as I love my iPhone I fully agree with these points!
Don't have a problem with Signal apart from certain places then the signal matches other phones on the same network!
I was amazed at the clarity and loudness of the calls though I didn't realise how much I had been avoiding making calls with my old nokia!
imranbehlim 21 September, 2011 11:21
Yeah agree - I never get any reception problems - unless I'm on the tube!
As for radio - it's a smartphone! Would be good to have it but it's a nice to have rather than something essential.
Alarm clock - is fine with loads of options and good repeat e.g. you can have alarms just for weekdays. If the phone is waking you up from texts & calls - guess what? you can turn the phone to Airplane mode! Problem solved!
Flash - is fine for what you need to use it for - remembering it is a phone and not a camera!
iTunes - I have a MacBook Air so find the synching fine. I think iCloud will change this for the better.
Processor - this is absolutely fine. Seems to be a history repeating in this area though. While Android is throwing processor speed and lower battery life (like PC's), Apple prefer to restructure their hardware to avoid system bottleneck and place honus on developers to utilise better development techniques. I'll have a medium processor that does everything asked of it and allows my battery to last all day thanks!
Normal SIM card, rounded handset, tougher glass and a lower price - could definitely change.
That is all...

Why moan about "i'd buy this if it did this." Its benign. "Id buy a car if I didnt have to use fuel, I remember bicycles" . Just shhh, Apple want you to use iTunes because they made it, it works and it lets you keep everything in one place in a very easy way. They are also a business which means they have their interests at heart too so yes, using iTunes means you're more likely to buy things from the app store. SO? Dont winge .
Not like samsung kies is any better which is buggy at the best of times and desktop managers boring interface that is super limited on features.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 11:55
I love how people claim because they don't have the problem it doesn't exist. My iPhone 4 was unuseable and had to be sent back due to it losing signal all the time, my HTC desire works fine in the same areas. I can go in to my local apple store and take every phone from 4/5 bars to lost network in 30secs perhaps some people just cause the effect more than others!
anonymous 21 September, 2011 12:22
1. Radio - why would you want an FM tuner just use Tunein Radio app it has basically every radio station in the world on it! Plus every FM radio built into a phone I have used has been poor.
2. Alarm - works for me plus there are a million alarm apps you can download!
3. Reception - not an issue for me and I don't have a case/bumper on my iPhone, reception is actually better for me than previous phones!
4. Flash - could be improved but for night time shots I would use my Nikon point and click camera or my Canon DSLR.
5. iTunes - yes this is a pain but then again does the job and once you have it setup works well enough!
6. Glass - yes agree it does shatter easily but it does look good, it's the best looking phone in my opinion!
7. SIM - is that really an issue how often do people swap SIM's?
8. Shape - is good I like it you can stand it up, place it on it's side, lay it flat.
9. Processor - does the job but as with anything quickly gets superseded!
10. Price - yes very expensive because they know people will pay! If iPhone was free everyone would have one.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 13:30
and get rid of the stupid home key button. my home key button stopped responding. iphone4 is overrated.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 13:52
This bloke is clearly as big a clueless attention seeking twit as he seems on TV! On the one hand he claims he has never bought an iPhone then says when ever he is out with one he runs up a hill to maintain signal!
I don't own an iPhone either because they are actually not that good if you require a bit more than a "consumer" product.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 14:00
I agree wholeheartedly and I can't see myself buying an iPhone. If only because of the restrictions that bind you to all things Apple! I think that phone is overpriced and overrated. Go Samsung!
Greetings, Willemijn
anonymous 21 September, 2011 14:06
The second you start to talk about bloody Apple the fanboys come out.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 14:15
I always wonder how people who post such dumb comments manage to use a computer to be able to do it. Anonymous said "On the one hand he claims he has never bought an iPhone then says when ever he is out with one he runs up a hill to maintain signal! "
He is a man who tests phones as part of his work. Surely it is non inconceivable that he has used iPhones but not actually owned one.
Dean Shepherd 21 September, 2011 14:23
Attention fan boys, you do realise that the article was written "10 things needed before I buy one" as in the article writer...you make it sound like hes expressing the entire planets opinion NOT his own...which his damn well entitled to.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 14:35
"Flash - could be improved but for night time shots I would use my Nikon point and click camera or my Canon DSLR."
lol maybe one of the dumber comments I've read in a while But this came from a guy who recommends using a radio app even when Bentley says 3G isn't suitable radio.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 14:56
"and since then, it's won every smart phone test I've conducted on The Gadget Show."
Oh yes, their extremely fair tests of who can get to a landmark quicker. A person on a motorbike with an Iphone or a person in a horse and cart with any other phone. I haven't watched this stupid programme since.
Allyn Rogers 21 September, 2011 14:59
When I read this to myself I couldn't stop using Jon Bentley's voice. I think it would have been a much better article if it had been written by Mr T.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 15:10
Well he must be the only one of the Gadgetshow team not plugging the iphone if any thing has apple on it will win even tho it looses the challenges i wonder how much apple sponsor the show
anonymous 21 September, 2011 16:30
Hey, Jon Bentley, I've got an opinion for you: KISS MY ASS
HAHAHhahaha
anonymous 21 September, 2011 16:43
"They'd better add more RAM, too -- rivals already have twice the iPhone 4's 512MB."
A fine testament to Apple and iOS that they can create a smooth experience with only half the RAM of their Android competitors....
anonymous 21 September, 2011 16:44
Reading the comments, to me is as good a reason as any not to buy an Iphone of any description.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 17:14
Totally agree, especially with:
Alarm clock: common Apple! phones made ten years ago could wake themselves up when switched off. Yes I know you can go airplane mode but it's a waste of battery life as well. When I discovered this (after buying one sadly) it made me realise just how much people will put up with if it has an apple logo on it. Stop making excuses for them fanboys! We shouldn't accept cr@p like this. Massive oversight!
Reception: not an issue of coverage but of download speed. It needs LTE at the very least.
itunes: this is probably the one thing that will force me off the iPhone. It's terrible. Good for you if everything you have is from Apple so that it syncs perfectly with iTunes but for those that still like to use a PC it sucks. Also iTunes doesn't have features like automatic library updating like you find on WMP. Cue windows phone 8...
Also he talks about camera flash, what about adobe Flash?
anonymous 21 September, 2011 17:45
@anonymous: 16:43
The reason it uses less ram is because it does not do true mulitasking
It is also a serious limitation, even the browser has to reload pages when you switch tabs, purely due to lack of memory
anonymous 21 September, 2011 18:49
Any one's opinion associated with this tedium is to be ignored.
samuelshoesmith 21 September, 2011 20:49
'When I enjoy a night out on the town' - Haha. That made me laugh. Not being an iPhone user, nor not having played around with an iPhone long enough, I never realised these issues existed. Apple needs to do some work.
100wattbulb 21 September, 2011 21:45
Hey Jon did you know ITV4 has repeats of the professionals on most days? and quantum leap. that sounds about your speed.
anonymous 21 September, 2011 22:48
Would everyone just calm down, its just an opinion and all points are valid. So many people are suckered by marketing campains that they refuse to accept that there particular choice may be flawed in some way. I myself use a dual core android phone which I purchased as it best suited my needs. I has to date exceeded my expectations but I accept that it isnt perfect and when I next renew my contact I will again make my choice on what best suits my needs at the time, be that OS5, Android, Windows (yes i did say the unfashoinable but highly usable windows!!!) or whatever new OS might be available at the time.
And this from an ex-employee of the mighty Apple corp. Oh yeah and of course the Gadget show let apple win, otherwise Apple would give the exclusives to their competition, wake up and smell the coffee people!
j33356 22 September, 2011 00:15
iPhone lemmings. You blind overpaid sad people.
anonymous 22 September, 2011 01:17
My main two problems with the Iphone is that is is (a), overpriced, and (b) overpopular. I mean the phone has got no character as everyone has exactly the same phone, and as jon mentioned, Iphones age horribly since when a new one comes out your £700 Iphone feels worthless!
anonymous 22 September, 2011 01:29
It's only a telephone.
anonymous 22 September, 2011 09:42
i've noticed most of the people who are whining are those that just cant afford it.
its easier to brush it off as a failure when u cant afford it.
these so-called "problems" are minor at best, and most will be fixed with the iphone5
even with the problems mentioned, some of which are debatable, and even asinine (radio? really? heard of the internet grandpa?) its still worth to get an iphone4 when it came out.
nothing beats the quality of the phone, its OS, and the incredible app store.
samsung can eat $ h i t.
anonymous 22 September, 2011 19:55
well I can afford an iphone and have a 3g. my contract is up but i will wait to see how many of the iphone 4's flaws are fixed by iphone5, which hits the shops in a couple of weeks.
if it not better than galaxy2 i'll get that instead
anonymous 22 September, 2011 23:12
My Nokia E7 takes care of all your problem with the added Opera Mini. I will put Opera Mini up against ANY WEB SEARCH on any other phone. I also use the f.m. radio and I love Nokia's choice of WORLD internet stations for internet radio which I listen to on my Nokia 950i. That alone is worth the price of the phone. I use Nokia's alarm every morning without leaving the phone on. I also do not know if I will upgrade to Belle because for me, I have perfection right here. Yes, using Opera Mini I can switch between web pages by just touching the page picture on the bottom of the screen and I'm there. Great for stock trading. I'm in the u.s. and use Zune for movies and music and it works great on the E7 although I'm finding my hd video of nature and trips using the E7 I watch more often. Love this smartphone. I LOVE YOU NOKIA!!!!!!
anonymous 23 September, 2011 10:22
Apple would have gone down had Microsoft not bailed it out. I guess they are trying to do more but their hands are tied. Steve jobs had a problem cos he thinks he knows best. Rubbish Apple products.
anonymous 23 September, 2011 10:39
So it's Apple's fault that you forget to switch the Airplane mode on?? And it's also Apple's fault that you're always about to go out the door when you decide to put some new tunes on your iPhone?? huh??
DweebyJ 23 September, 2011 11:24
I have just moved from iPhone 3G to Samsung Galaxy S2 . I have to say the Samsung makes the iPhone look like an iToy. I am not convinced that the iPhone4 is better than Samsung.
The Reasons to buy Samsung:-
Its cheap, yet better
Samsung is open, I can install Android apps like Ringdroid to create ringtones directly on phone,
Can connect to an external hdd directly via USB.
Dont need crappy iTunes
Download speed is faster than iPhone 4
Browser speed is faster.
Phone is faster in general.
Phone network is not noticeably slower than Wireless, I can view Sky news video feed within 2 seconds.
Shots 1080P video
Tv out
Bluetooth allows file transfer.......
Customermize notifications.....
Larger scree, OLED is better
Problems with iPhone 4
As far as I am aware you have to use none mp3 for ringtones, can not edit on phone, very time consuming
have to use itunes which is poor
The only reason people by iPhone is the budget Apple has for Advertising
To restrictive regarding file access.
I doubt the Iphone 5 with be better than Galaxy S2.
I suggest anyone in doubt go on Youtube an do there research.
The iPhone costs $300 is USA, Samsung $800. UK is being conned!!
anonymous 23 September, 2011 13:33
We will always be Apple fanboys.
anonymous 23 September, 2011 15:26
I would like more gb as iive maxed out mines now , it's 32 gb
Does any 1 no if apple will improve this ?
anonymous 23 September, 2011 15:33
Hello apple fans, you are been tied up with gimmick technology that is being built in iphone product. yeah right. if apple claim they have built future phone for you silly fans. think again!,samsung has done 1000% percent better.
samsung galaxy s to galaxy s2. common dnt let ur eyes to be shut by apple fancy words.
Goodluck with your iphone 5 which will surely lack what samsung has built into galaxy s2.
Yommy samandroid.
hindiman 23 September, 2011 15:34
I'm always amazed at how iPhone owners brush away its failings like a mother defending her miscreant child. To be able to drag and drop files, including music, IS an advantage when you can do so at any computer. Example: my nephew recorded a song - all I had to do was connect my phone and drag it across. 30 seconds max, no need to download and install itunes. Why is that so difficult to appreciate? Then there's bluetooth, or the lack of it, to do the same. Want to share a picture you just took with your friend who's sitting next to you? I can send it quickly by bluetooth without incurring data charges, without faffing about with email, just quickly and simply. Across a few feet! And yes, FM radio is a welcome facility and the sound quality is excellent. Again radio for free using a more reliable reception method than 3G (which eats up your data too).
Yes the iPhone is a good phone, a groundbreaking design at the time and responsible for kick-starting a host of new developments in the whole smartphone arena but please let's be honest about its shortcomings and about Apple's obsessive desire to rule and control what you can and can't do with it.

10 things Jon Bentley needs before I'll read his drivel:
#1-#10 -- Credibility.
anonymous 24 September, 2011 11:21
John, you are spot on (and I am an iphone fan)
anonymous 24 September, 2011 14:44
I agree wit all of those comments (especially the last one, as we are English we have to pay the price for everything! Maximum of $300 you'd have to spend on an iPhone 4 in America). And I am a fan of the iPhone, but don't have the money to buy it and am also waiting for when it just becomes a pane of glass (just kidding, but I hope technology will reach that point)
James Boone 26 September, 2011 08:16
Ahhh, the flood of defensive iPhone users who subconsciously know they've been mugged. It's a beautiful sight. Is it just me or is anyone else getting sick with the whole i-thing now? iTunes is a horrible experience aesthetically and inconvenient.
Jon - even if you did find another (unfortunate) computer with iTunes on, if you've already sync'd your iPhone, you won't be able to transfer any music from another computer to the phone that is "i". Computer says no.
anonymous 26 September, 2011 18:10
I could'nt stand the sight of iPhone 4. The shape and feel of it, gave me the willies. So! I went and bought the Samsung S as I considered it better in shape as well as looks and a better performer. Now! as regards iPhone 5. Even if it can dance and sing on it's own. If! ths shape has'nt improved much, there's "No" way I'd go near it! even if it was £100 cheaper My iPhone 3g to date was and still is the Top' version of the Apple phone.
anonymous 29 September, 2011 15:12
It seems you only want more ram or a faster processor because other phones have them not because the iPhone 4 needs them
anonymous 1 December, 2011 18:49
Here's where I stopped reading:
I'm convinced that Apple doesn't bother purely because there isn't any decent FM radio in California, just bland middle-of-the-road pap. But here in Britain we have the best radio in the world
k7pmi 25 January, 2012 10:25
The FM radio receiver integrated within the phone is VERY useful. Have you ever been outside the range of a cell tower or wifi hotspot? If so, internet radio is useless. Both HTC and Motorola have integrated FM receivers within their smart phones.
