iPhone water-damage indicators leave users seeing red

A quick trip to the bottom of the toilet bowl is a fast way to kill your iPhone stone dead, but is a chat in the rain or a foggy day just as likely to leave you an iPhone widow? Punters with broken iPhones that have never seen a drop of water have been told their warranty is void at Apple stores, because the moisture sensors on their phones have been tripped, according to a report by the BBC's Watchdog programme.

The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS have two sensors, visible from the outside of the phone, that turn red when they touch liquid. There are two more tucked up inside the phone. You can spot the two outside ones yourself, using a torch and an eagle eye -- instructions are on the Apple Web site

Apple says the sensors have to come into direct contact with water to be activated, and that they "are designed not to be triggered by humidity and temperature changes that are within the product's environmental requirements". According to the iPhone 3GS specs online, that's 5 per cent to 95 per cent relative humidity.

But there are plenty of anecdotal stories from people who claim that a sweaty palm, misty bathroom or rainy-day chat have all triggered their phones' sensors, voiding their warranties. There's even a class-action lawsuit in California launched by irritated owners of moist phones.

Moreover, some irate users say they were denied a free repair even though only one of the sensors was red, although Apple told the BBC "the warranty will only be void due to liquid damage if all indicators have been triggered".

In a test by the National Belgian consumer organisation Test-Aankoop, the iPhone couldn't live up to its standardised 'moisture, light drizzle, water' test. The test results are in Dutch, but a translation on the Antwerp Calling blog reveals the testers branded the iPhone "extremely sensitive to water" and that we should "beware of typical rain".

We spoke to an iPhone repair engineer at a London shop that's handled a few of our broken screens and similar troubles, and his opinion was that the liquid sensors can be sensitive to everyday moisture, such as the steamy air of a bathroom. But he also stated that the sensors usually gave an accurate indication of whether the phone would have internal water damage once he'd opened it up.

If you think these liquid detectors are over-sensitive, take a look at Apple's patent for a 'consumer abuse detection system' -- it will record the time and date of a "liquid ingress" event and then come round your house and kick you in the face.

Apple has yet to come back to us with a comment on the damp iPhone issue, but in the meantime we'd like to hear about your experiences. Have you had a broken iPhone turned away because of a red moisture detector, after spending its life sealed in a sandwich bag on a desert planet? Or have your sodden gadgets been welcomed with open arms by the Apple minions who can only be described as Geniuses? Let us know in the comments.

I had the wifi issue. Followed the instructions but it kept loosing Wifi signal. Then it began to struggle charging and went off totally.

Thought I had a battery issue. Sent it off to Apple through O2 to be told it has liquid damage and I would have to pay £139. I am not accepting this as it has never been near water and like so many here I feel I am getting fleeced for money.

Due to high volume of calls I have now been on hold to apple for over 25 minutes. So it seeems there are lots of compliments.

Does anyone know the best way to proceed with apple and carphone warehouse if they are refusing to repair your iphone under warrenty because of water damage when your phone has never been near water? I am having this problem and speaking to both companies is like talking to a brick wall. I am not getting anywhere!! And I refuse to pay the £157 for repair that they are asking.

After having two Iphone's I will never get another one. Specifically, after getting the "water damage" excuse from Apple the last two times. For length reasons, I will primarily and briefly share my last experience only. Basically what happened is, I paid for a replacement phone after my first phone was consistently freezing up on me. The first phone was never dropped in water or damaged, yet the Apple refused to replace it, so I naively paid for a new one.
Four months after receiving my "replacement" Iphone from Apple I began receiving phone calls from various people in different locales throughout the Northwestern US and Canada. Those folks were complaining about me sending them pornographic spam from my phone. I, of course, wasn't. I spent hours, yes hours, with Apple support and could not get an answer from them except that "it can't happen to an Iphone". They asked me to restore (even though I did that myself) the phone and I followed their directions over the phone. Unfortunately, during the restore, the phone was locked out from Itunes saying "The SIM card was not valid or not authorized on the network". After that, the phone was dead and it would never allow me or the Apple Genius dude to access it. Apple said my water indication had been tripped and that my phone had been Jailbroken. I told him that I live in a beach house that is ocean front and that maybe the moisture in the air might affect it (I'm in SoCal so it's not very humid). I argued endlessly with Apple that I had never Jailbroken my phone and never dropped my phone in the toilet, tub, or ocean. Since the Water Indicator had been tripped they refused service to me.
THE FOLLOWING is what drove me nutts! Apple acknowledged that the "replacement phone" was a Canadian Iphone set to Canadian' networks. Basically, the phone they gave me had apparently been a jail-broken phone. Yes, Apple acknowledged that with me! But since the water indicator was tripped it voided any service. I said good bye to Apple at that point!

My iphone got the red indicator as well. I discovered it when my local service provider (Starhub Singapore) show it to me as I sent it for 1-to-1 exchange for upgrade to iOS4. It's abit frustrating that my warranty was denied because of the red indicator although the issue i had was the constant hanging of my phone due to the update of iOS4.

And the customer service pointed out that there will be charge if i were to go ahead with the exchange. I explained to her my issue is not on warranty but on the iOS4 upgrade which keep crashing the phone. I told her when i helped my hubby to change his phone with another service provider (Singtel Singapore), it was changed without any question asked, the issue then was hanging of the phone because the centre button is responding retardedly.

This customer service told me that all service providers will check the red indicator before honoring the warranty which I totally don't agree because in my case, the phone hangs not because of red indicator but because of the upgrade of the software version to iOS4.

Cheers,
Sally

I have just been quoted £140 to repair my "water damaged" I phone, it was in the kitchen at the time and the phone may have got splashed by a couple of drops of water, sensetive or what? I feel that whilst the phone is ok whilst working , it definately has reception issues and in my opinion, its not fit for purpose, its a mobile phone and as such, in its lifetime its bound to get splashed or enter into a high moisture area and should be resilient enough to withstand a couple of drops of water. Also £140 ? they are profiteering from there own poor design.
I have been advised by the 02 shop of there complaints procedure, but from reading this blog it seems it will be a fruitless and lengthy exercise, I therefore intend a visit to my local 02 shop complete with billboard and intend to stand outside informing potential I phone purchasers of the potential experience they are letting themselves in for.

My iphone was not connecting to wireless hence I took it to London Apple store. They did some torch and eagle eye tests in seconds and said that it had water damage. We were quiet annoyed as the phone was working fine it was just the wireless which was not connecting. Finally after 2 hours of arguing we were made to buy a new handset for £137, for which we again asked for discount. They said you can pay half of it and take a new phone, hence ended up paying £70. It is not fair as I am a student and cannot afford occassional £70 extravaganzas in apple store. I really want to take this issue to authorities. Please advice if any of you have already done so.

I work with mobile phones and the first thing people say when there handset has moisture damage is that it hasn't been near water but the same thing can happen when you use your mobile in the rain ie you wouldn't use your laptop outside when it was raining would you.so why is a mobile phone any different it is an electrical device

Also if your phone was faulty when you first got it then why didn't you take it back with in the 28 days faulty exchange period.you would get the same problem with any other phone if it comes in contact with moisture.
Though I will say that apple do let themselves down by only going by the outer indicaters and not by the inside of the handset as they will not open them to see the damage or take a picture of the damage inside the phone like most if the other manufactures do to prove to customer the liquid ingress

Heard same robotic comment from service man two days before in Seoul. The sensor is located in charging/data connector side without any cover and either exposed totally. So we can say they put indicator outside the phone and says it is water damaged for paid repair service. I bought this trouble maker 7 months ago with 24 month flat fee campaign program. So I can't even crash this phone since I have to pay penalty if I want cancel the contract. Why water indicator outside?!?!!!!!! Apple should accept warranted repair when the other indicator inside is not triggered.

i have an iphone 3gsi, it worked fine until one day it just stopped, emergency calls only etc, then it worked again for a few days and then stopped. it was less than a year old so i sent it away to Vodafone. They returned it saying it was liquid damaged, i disputed this because i knew it was not possible but they wouldnt change their view. I contacted apple who said they wont replace it its liquid damaged and told me to look into headset hole and tell them the colour, all i could see was the white inside it. she said it should be red or pink but i couldnt see red, pink or any colour in the hole. she said she would send me a box to return it for checking but if it was liquid damaged they would send it back. I sent it to apple and the day they received it they sent me an email to confirm a replacement was on its way. i am putting in a formal complaint to vodafone who wanted to charge me £180 to repair a phone which clearly was not liquid damaged and i want my line rental refunded for my inconvenience and their lies.

i have an iphone 3gs and i live in Singapore where humidity is a serious issue. One day after a lunch trip with sweaty legs and the phone in my shorts pocket, the right side of the touch screen (portrait) started to have problem, e.g, the letter "p" was not responsive. The faulty area can sometimes expanded a bit to the left and when that happened, the entire left area can go supersensitive when the phone was rotated to landscape position -- it's amazing to see the letters randomly popped up when my figure hovered above the screen. What i did was running the iphone on some CPU-burning app's day and night for two days to push out the moisture, and it is almost 100% normal now :)

I had a problem with "no service" for a couple of days so I took my iphone to my service provider and they suggested i try a new sim card. That worked... for about 30seconds.

We sent it in for repair and after 2 weeks they told me it was liquid damage. I'm not satisfied with that answer since I've never dropped my phone in water or been in a misty, humid place.

I'm going to try the consumer abuse detection detection system since I suspect that something my have occured when I sent the phone in to be repaired.

My bottom speakers stopped working after 2 months & when I took it to the Apple store they said the red indicator was tripped in the head jack but not the bottom. They said this voided the warranty & offered me a new iPhone for $199. I tole them I had not exposed the phone to ant liquid &that I would tell all my friends not to get the iPhone because of this. The manager then came out and gave me a new phone-at no cost--but I am now worried how long this one will last... Good to see the comment that both are to be triggered to void the warranty--I'll know that if this happens again!

Same problem, never been near water, had phone for 8 months (apple phone) been with 02 15 years they won't £120 to repair, have refused to pay, have gone elsewhere, 02 are now chasing me for £500 outstanding contract, what a rip off!

Had a simiar problem to all the above with my phone when it refused to charge or sync with iTunes; took it into the Genius Bar in Southampton to get the 'Geniuses' to look at my phone which was a replacement for my original iPhone4. Like most commenters here, I have never had my phone near water, however, the liquid indicator near the dock at the bottom of the phone had been tripped. Only this one had tripped, however, it was enough for it to invalidate the warranty (which bizarrely is only 90 days for a brand new replacement phone!?!?). I have recently spent time abroad where it is more humid than in the UK, however, well within the range that Apple release as operationally effective for the iPhone. Obviously, failed iPhone out of contract and warranty equals 120 of my English pounds to replace the phone. Can't say I'm very happy about this. If it happens again to this phone within the year, I will probably be saying goodbye to Aple and to iPhone. Very expensive commodity for something that fails so easily.

There are a plethora of fly by night operations currently that promise to limit the damage to your property for insanely low prices. Some of these services may be reputable; but many are not. To protect your property, you will need nothing short of the best.

When a flood strikes, the initial water damage can take a large physical toll on your home or business. On top of that, a high level of stress is guaranteed. Just looking at a previously pristine building that has suddenly been reduced to a swampland is enough to send anyone into an emotional tailspin. Chances are that you’re facing this very situation right now, or reside in an area where floods are a serious possibility.
