Are you being ripped off for owning an iPhone? Are phone networks ripping you off for owning a smart phone? We've heard from many of you who are unhappy with the hidden charges, secret data limits and extra fees imposed by phone companies.
One reader, Martyn Hardacre, eloquently sums up the frustration of owning an iPhone. Here's his story -- have you shared his experiences?
"I recently got an iPhone independently of my Orange contract and wanted to share my experience with you... It highlights how iPhone users are getting a raw deal and are paying more for no logical reason!
"When I had confirmed that I was getting an iPhone, I thought I had a relatively simple process in front of me. In my mind I needed to ring Orange and get a micro SIM and put it into my iPhone and continue on my contract (which had 11 months left to run). I rang Orange and got through to Customer Services reasonably promptly and asked for my micro SIM.
"All seemed to be going swimmingly until I was told about the £10 bolt-on that I needed... I enquired about this and it seemed that if I was getting an iPhone, I needed an iPhone tariff. I explained that I was happy with my current contract (Dolphin 25 -- £25 per month, 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 500MB data) and that no change of tariff was required. This did not compute. 'But you are having an iPhone and that means you need an iPhone tariff' was the unchanging message."
iPhone tax
"I explained that if I had opted to get the latest BlackBerry or HTC I would not need a new tariff, so asked why I needed such changes based on one particular handset. My logic did not resonate with our friend at Orange. The only option, if I refused to change tariff, was to have a micro SIM on my existing plan, but that I would have no 3G data. Frustrated, I put the phone down.
"I could understand it if I was getting the phone from Orange as they would need to get back the cost of the handset in the contract, but I was buying this independently of them.
"I asked that I be put through to someone who could tell me how much it would be to buy myself out of my contract. I was told someone would call me back in 30 minutes. No one called. I rang back and told the same story again, but at least found out that for £150 I could be shot of Orange. I opted to mull this over.
"A few minutes later I was called back. The customer service rep told me that if he changed my existing contract and added an iPhone bolt-on I could get the micro SIM and keep the same total cost by changing to a £15 tariff with the £10 iPhone bolt-on on top. Happy enough at this, I gave it the OK. I then got put through to Newcastle to order said SIM. The guy then told me I could just have a £5 bolt-on for 500MB of data if I'd prefer, which I opted for. At this point I had my micro SIM and my monthly tariff had actually been reduced to £20!"
Tethering surprise
"All was well -- until I went to use the personal hotspot generated by the phone. 'Contact Orange UK' was the message that came up. I rang and was told I needed a bundle to allow tethering. So when I'm already paying for my data allowance, I then also need to pay for the privilege to decide how I use that data! These bundles start from £5.10 a month and go up to a despicable £25 a month on top of your existing contract.
"The conclusion I have reached is that you are actually punished for having an iPhone. You are expected not only to pay more, but to be happy to pay more. Part of this is down to the network and part of this is down to Apple for allowing that level of control to be administered by the network, when they should be putting the customer at the centre of their focus.
"On Android there is a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot app and the networks cannot access this. It gives the customer the freedom to use their allocated data limit in whatever way they wish.
"I'll soon be jumping ship to Three, as they have suitable SIM-only tariffs -- but even they charge an extra £5 a month for iPhone 4 users. The same deal is £5 less for an iPhone 3GS.
"Apple and Orange -- a sour combination."
We've asked Orange for comment on Martyn's experience, but it's yet to get back to us. Have you had a similar experience with the iPhone, or any other smart phone for that matter? Do you feel as if you're being cheated, or have you found the perfect deal? Share your tale of woe or handy tips in the comments or on our Facebook page.

It seems ridiculous that Tesco Mobile does not allow wi-fi tethering on their iPhone 4 handsets when - as I understand it - Three does.
There's probably something buried in the Terms and Conditions which allows operators to withhold basic handset functionality, but it's shoddy and unreasonable if the same handset on essentially the same monthly package results in different service provision between operators. Especially when, as noted above, you've already paid for the data allowance.
Incidentally, charging £20 to unlock the handset before end-of-contract also makes travelling with the iPhone an incovenience with further unwanted expense. Fortunately, the handset cost and monthly bills means you'll be lucky to run the heating, never mind jetting off to foreign lands.

This is why I went with 3. I was with O2 and after four outages lasting hours during last year and HORRIBLE data allowances, I'm now with a 4S and unlimited data!!! :D

the most restrictive mobile manufacturer and the most restrictive mobile phone network. (remember how locked down orange handsets have always been?)
shock horror that you found that combination to be restrictive.

Orange is ridiculous ! All of my friends who are with orange trying to set up a direct debit we're never gone through no matter how many times they phoned up and being told its already done. Next thing you know is "you didn't pay the bills for this month" again! Go to giffgaff!

Well of course! iPhone owners aren't the smartest bunch in the world so it's only natural that they should get fleeced like the sheep they are.

Well hark at all the iPhone haters.
It's not just the iPhone that's the issue here, it's smart phones in general, and the networks' attitude. Sure, you guys commenting here on CNET are a tech-savvy bunch (and rather handsome, may I say) but not everybody knows all the ins and outs of a phone network. And the problem with a crappy phone contract is that if you don't know about the problems, you quickly discover them - and have eighteen months to two years to regret not finding out sooner.

Also had this problem with orange. Solved it by purchasing a Micro SIM cutter from Amazon for £3.50 and cutting my SIM down to fit my iPhone 4, used a regular 500MB data bundle and voila. I did end up jumping ship to Three for a monthly rolling deal which gave me 1GB for £15 a month with a micro-SIM though. Recently called them to add unlimited data bundle which I was told I couldn't do unless on a 18 or 24 month contract, but the guy gave me 2GB extra usage for free! now I have 3GB usage for £15 a month, happy days :-)

I have a Desire HD on Orange, was on a £30 a month contract with a £5 bolt on for an extra 500MB internet (300 min, unlimited text, total 1GB internet [500 contract, 500 bolt on]).
Unfortunately 1GB a month isnt enough for me so recently looked at giffgaff and have gotten a free sim from them with the £10 goody bag each month (250 mins unlimited texts and unlimited internet).
Cancelled my bolt-on and downgraded my contract (to £25), now I have more internet, same texts and roughly the same minutes for no extra money. And my spare orange sim can go in my partners phone as she hardly uses any internets.
Next phone will be bought sim free for sure.

I have been an Orange customer for about 18 years. Without break. I have found a company (Voice Mobile) through my work who will offer me a 'business' deall for a free iphone 4s (16GB) on a £30 p/m contract with 450 mins, unlimited landline or Orange calls, 750 MB data and 250 texts (enough for me). The contract is an Orange contract, but in order for me to have it, it must be a new contract.
This means that I have to leave Orange and lose my loyalty bonus, in order to take out a new contract with Orange in order to get the deal.
Having contacted Orange about this on the phone, they will not entertain matching the deal (which is on their network remember) nor will they simplify the process. And so I find my self in the position of having to leave and then come back to Orange if I am to take advantage of the offer.
Work that out if you can. If anyone from Orange is reading this and wants to comment, please do.

Interesting comment above on SIM cutting. I mentioned doing this to Orange and they said they "would know" if I did this and the phone would then have no 3G data access!

I think I got the best deal ever with Vodaphone. I wanted a 32 GB iPhone 4S, which costs £600.00, but I took a contract with Vodaphone for 12 months where I get 1200 mins, unlimited text, 750 GB internet for £51.00 + I paid £219 for my handset and got £60 cash back. Hence total of £771 after 12 months. I think that is much better than any pay as you go iPhone deal. I am allowed tethering, and for the first 3 months i have unlimited internet. For £170 for a year I good enough mins and internet. No complains here.

After seeing my comments on here, someone from the executive office at orange called me. Completely missed the point and instead spent time telling me that my first calls to orange "weren't explained clearly". Continued to go on about what tariff was best for me and even suggested... Wait for it... Going onto a £30 a month iPhone tariff. Amazing. Even managed to patronise me and tell me that some iPhone apps use a lot of data. Well thanks for that. I despair.

I used a micro sim cutter and have had no issues! Worked great. Didn't even have to port my number to a new micro sim. The £2.99 cutter even came with an adaptor to use the newly cut micro sim in a normal phone. I'm on three network. £15 a month for 300 minutes 3000 text and all you can eat data. And teathering works

use giff gaff! 10 pounds for unlimited interenet, texts and 250 min
