The next iPhone could be fantastic plastic, as new reports suggest a budget iPhone will arrive this year with a cheaper casing.
The Wall Street Journal reports that a budget iPhone will launch this year, with a new design that cuts the cost. "People briefed on the matter" reckon Apple has plans for a cheaper iPhone made of polycarbonate instead of the glass and aluminium of the current model. For an example of a polycarbonate phone, check out the colourful Nokia Lumia 920.
The specs for this rumoured iPhone 5S -- or whatever it's called -- are likely to be the same, or perhaps recycle elements of older phones such as the iPhone 4 or 4S.
An iPhone mini would follow the iPad mini, a sawn-off 7.9-inch version of the original 9.7-inch iPad. The iPad mini shows Apple is prepared to vary things a little if there's a demand. While the rumoured 5S is likely to be cheaper, its unlikely to actually be physically smaller, like the iPad mini: the iPhone is one of the smaller phones on the market these days, and the trend is for phones to get bigger.
The iPhone has just been overtaken by the Samsung Galaxy S3 as the best-selling phone, so maybe it's about time Apple made a few changes. Analysts reckon a cheaper iPhone is inevitable as everybody who can afford one owns one (unless they have an S3), meaning Apple has to turn to customers with less cash to sustain profits. But each new version still sells like hot cakes on a particularly cold day, so Apple may be loath to cheapen the brand.
But as long as Apple doesn't go down the route of the Galaxy S3 Mini, a flagrant cash-in on the S3 name, then Apple's premium brand could remain unbesmirched. Because let's face it, 'cheaper' is relative, and 'budget' in the Apple Store means something quite different than in the real world.
Would you buy a cheaper iPhone, or would a plastic iPhone cheapen the brand? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Don't see why they shouldn't use plastic. The 3G/3GS was so much more comfortable to hold than the 4/4S/5. And it looked better.

An iPhone mini? It's already mini!!

Samsung owns the budget and midrange smartphone market with its quality, value for money products. Apples will probably release an iPhone 4 like device and price it at £400.

To make it plastic would go against what every iPhone fanatic has been using to slate the Galaxy S3. Egg on their face lol

1. As somebody's already said, the 3GS was plastic; i.e. we've already been there.
2. You make it sound like all those who use alternatives to the iPhone are poor and misguided; newsflash, for many it's a conscious choice and one that often comes with having an iq above that of a carrot!
3. Apple already have a budget and super budget offering, in the form of the 4S, and 4; any poor person, desperate for their iPhone hit can a opt for one these, if indeed they are desperate for Apple.

Can it be that expensive to make something out of aluminium? If that's the case why aren't tins of sardines not costing 100's of pounds.

It'll only be an excuse to bring the price down by about £50-100 anyway, Apple make massive profits on their on hardware. All that will happen is that a new generation of buyers will see the iPhone as "affordable" and then get suckered into buying the 6 when the price goes back up because it's "what they're used to". Great Marketing strategy...

But the iphone 5 is cheap - well, to me anyway.......
anonymous 9 January, 2013 21:51
So is this the only change/improvement(?) to expect in the next iPhone iteration? Wonderful, will Apple's marketing dept spin it as "the latest big thing"?
Samsung and Apple devices are inferior to the Sony Xperia Z. Japanese solid state components a nd build quality is superior to all.

I've never been a fan of the iphone, but with phones becoming increasingly larger and thinner with batteries that are obviously inadequate there's a definite market for a phone that fits comfortably in the hand. An iphone 5s that's thicker with vastly improved specifications especially with the CPU and battery is a potential winner as far as I'm concerned regardless if it's plastic or not. If that keeps the costs down then so be it. Such a phone appearing next month would be wonderful! I'm fed up with this large screen, thin body and inadequate battery mess we're in.
anonymous 9 January, 2013 23:19
Any budget iPhone will probably be like the new 5th gen iPod touch and that's got a metal body and retina screen.

I have nothing against a phone being made of plastic. In fact it is actually a very durable material so it is sensible to do so.
What I find funny is all those up themselves fanbois who took so much from the premium materials that Apple use in manufacture of their iPhone. Where are they now?
Also this is just a rumour mill story so has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

People like you really annoy me, if u think that there's no need to say it, to other people its expensive.
I for one am already pissed that there releasing another product so soon I've just got my iphone 5 leave at that! For at least a year to two years! So we can upgrade in time for a new handset!

Please use plastics apple I then I cant wait to see every single plastic (Samsung) hating idiot has to say then!
anonymous 10 January, 2013 21:22
There will be no cheap plastic Apple iPhone.
It simply doesn't fit Apples's business model.
They may decide to do a stand alone lower cost iPhone, rather than use last year's model to fill that space, but they will not do a cheap budget phone at a peanut's profit margin..

Quality, give me a break, nearly everyone i know with an iphone has either cracked the rear, the screen or their scratched to f##k its just a f###ing gimmick its a con, apple are coming out with a mini, which is what they already basicly sell because their panicking, their loosing the smartphone market at a considerable rate, android have destroyed them and samsung are just way to advanced for them, they cannot keep up....

"...their loosing the smartphone market at a considerable rate, android have destroyed them and samsung are just way to advanced for them, they cannot keep up...."
Apart from being unable to spell, you come across as a complete idiot.
Apples sales of iPhone are currently higher than ever. They can't make them fast enough to meet demand.
