The iPhone 5 might arrive sporting a radical new design thanks to Liquidmetal, if new reports from Korean insiders are to be believed. Sadly, that doesn't mean Apple's next mobile will be able to morph into knives and stabbing weapons.
Korean site ETNews claims to have insider sources that have confirmed Apple will be using Liquidmetal technology on the iPhone 5. The more eagle-eyed among you will have noticed the lack of a space between those two words. The term refers to the alloy created by the company Liquidmetal Technologies, rather than a mimetic polyalloy.
There's very little detail in the leak, so it's important to take it with an almost lethal dosage of salt. However, Apple apparently paid $20m to Liquidmetal Technologies for exclusive use of the alloy on electronic devices and we've so far only seen it come into use on the SIM-card ejector tool.
It's therefore quite possible that the material could be put into more elaborate use in the chassis of the phone itself. Rumours for the iPhone 4S (when we thought it would be called the iPhone 5) were heavily indicating a redesigned case with a tapered back, probably made of metal, so it's not difficult to believe that Apple is working with Liquidmetal on a new design.
The alloy is designed to be extremely strong and hardwearing and, more importantly, can be heat-formed in a similar way to plastic, rather than being milled from a solid piece. This could well mean that we'll see a more fluid physical design on the iPhone 5. The leak hinted at a surface as "smooth as liquid" which to me suggests a glossy, curved back, similar to the iPhone 3GS, but made of a polished chrome-like metal, rather than the matte casing used on the iPad.
Of course, if the material can be easily heat-formed, then Apple could theoretically opt for any shape it likes, so let's go crazy and imagine a flowing, wobbly back to the phone that fits the contours of your hand when it's held. It's probably a good thing the phone won't actually be made of a liquid metal -- that sounds incredibly messy, difficult to hold and extremely toxic, if not malevolently robotic. Best to stick with a solid design then.
Do you expect to see a radical new design? Or are you more keen to see the Samsung Galaxy S3? Have you seen this boy? Let me know in the comments below or over on our Facebook page.

iPhone 5 already out called the the iPhone 4S. Will people stop doing articles calling the next iPhone by this name. Its very unlikely to be called that.

CNET, this is for your own good. Stop posting rubbish like this. Apple will reveal what they're going to do. Speculating is not good. Plus the other random rubbish you've put just contradicts this. Stop posting, it's seriously worrying.

Apple designs are starting to lose a lot of ground ( I expect the iTV or iPanel to look rather bland) The iPhone 4s fiasco did not help and the new iPad has many new features that will not entice users away from the iPad or iPad 2 because they do not change the game any more. A screen that can hold more pixels than you can see is a) over kill and b) a travesty to your pics (which is what I know a lot of people have bought it for) because the increase in res means your pics taken on an older digital resolution will look either very small and not pixed or large enough for your nan to see but so pixed that she still cannot tell who it is. Apple used to have an amazing team between the CEO and the design guru. They have now lost it, but I seriously hope Cook and Ives can find the new want in the current tech world.............

My anon was the big text after the threatening anon but did the previous one sound rather over aggressive? I am sure cnet watch all of these and will comment soon but It sounds like you are trying to represent Apple on here as instead of saying "I am sure apple...." you mentioned Apple in the first person given current US law. " Apple will reveal what they're going to do". It is also a threatening post as it says as this for your own good. I am sure that as it is a threatening message (look up the terrorism legislation in the US)

I admit these rumours are getting annoying but I'm also getting annoyed at everyone putting about how CNET are so called 'Apple fanboys' and how everyone is saying to stop putting rubbish like this!. It's clear that everyone who says that are Android fans. Could you in fact be called 'Android fanboys'? I think both Apple and Android are great and both have advantages and disadvantages over each other, but people who call CNET 'Apple fanboys' is stupid and quite funny. If you took time to notice, CNET actually chose the Samsung Galaxy S2 as last years phone of the year, BEATING the iPhone 4S. So don't talk daft.
Also, despite how annoying these rumours are getting, I find it stupid that people actually believe that CNET have made them up. CNET have heard the rumour and all they are doing is giving readers other options that could possibly feature in the iPhone 5. What is wrong with that? The whole point of this website is to review products and debate about what we could see in future products. If you don't like it and continue to moan, why are you on here?

I think its fun to read, so the rest of you should not bother to read after the words 'LETHAL DOSAGE OF SALT'.
As for you Cnet, stop playing with your readers hearts, you're bursting their bubble as they are desperate for some solid Apple news.
Personally I prefer Android and loathe Apple as a company, but do give them credit where due. And I agree, they need to put a new ball in the playground, because other manufactures have moved the game up a notch.
haych

i read as far as the fourth word 'might' and then stopped. GIVE. IT. A. REST. this is a lesson on how to generate despondency and kill hype.

Is a sense of humour failure absolutely mandatory to read and post responses to articles on here?

This article is an outrage and you can expect to hear from my local MP

"Sadly, that doesn't mean Apple's next mobile will be able to morph into knives and stabbing weapons."
Why is that sad?
