iPhone 5 set for 4G in October, what can new iPad tell us?

Rumours are beginning to swirl around the next generation of iPhone once again. The iPhone 5 -- or whatever the sequel to the Apple iPhone 4S ends up being called -- is expected to arrive in October, but what can we infer about it from the new iPad?

The Apple-watchers at iMore report that the next iPhone will be a 4G phone. Many hoped for 4G in the 4S and were disappointed, but now the new iPad has brought 4G with it, it seems almost certain that the new iPhone will follow suit.

The new iPad also features HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA, speedy technology for connecting to the Web faster than 3G when you're out and about, which will have to do here in Blighty where we have no 4G network as yet. If the new iPhone can fit all that in its smaller frame, that is -- and reports suggest that Apple is addressing this question by building a smaller "micro dock" version of the 30-pin USB connector.

Of course, I've also got my fingers crossed that we might actually have the beginnings of a 4G network over here by October, as promised by Orange and T-Mobile 4G some time this year.

We've heard reports that the iPhone 5 would sport a 4.6-inch screen, a whopping increase over the current 3.5-inch display -- although the latest rumours suggest that any increase won't be anywhere near that dramatic. Apple doesn't like to make big changes, so we think that's fair enough.

Finally, a moment to speculate over the name. Now the new iPad has done away with numbers, could the next generation of iPhone be called the new iPhone? I wouldn't bet against it.

As Apple's factories gear up for the iPhone 5, we'll keep you posted on the latest rumours and leaks to help you sort the fact from the fiction, to help you choose a new phone or wait for the new iPhone. Press play on our video to see some of the tastiest rumours so far.

Here we go again. My bet it wont be called the Iphone 5. It will be called the Iphone 4SUX. It will the exactly the same as the 4S but the screen brightness will go up to 11.

I found the galaxy S2 screen to be a nice size, but the Note was a little too large. maybe an iPhone with a screen around the S2 size would be good

[a smaller "micro dock"] ... just stop it with these proprietary soddin' connectors and use mini-USB. The pile of only very slightly different USB cables I need to take when I travel is getting silly!

Why is a UK site raving about a phone that will probably not support UK 4G frequencies - the new iPad (naming fail there), only support 4G (not that it is actually proper 4G) only in the US. So those of you that bought one in the UK got sold a pup.

Leave the walled garden, there is other technology out there. dont be a fanboy.

"the new iPad (naming fail there), only support 4G (not that it is actually proper 4G) only in the US." Isn't that because we don't have 4G networks yet?

I would say seeing as the iPad does support 4G, the next iPhone will as well.

@Peter
To date, it seems that 4G in Europe will use different network frequencies than those currently used in the US and supported by the iPad 3. Even if you buy an iPad 3 now, most chances are that it will not connect to any European 4G network, even they are deployed.

Let's see, from the iPad 3 we can infer that the iPhone 5 4G won't work with Australia 4G networks! :D

In the uk the iPad won't be 4g compatible wrong chip apparently , makes u worry about iPhone 5

The Iphone 5 having 4G connectivity will be pointless in the UK for at least 2 years so 2014 would be best release date for iphone 5 in the UK and most of Europe. No point in having an iphone 5 in the UK until the government sorts out the complexities surrounding granting new 4G licences which could seriously interfere with UK digital TV signals. If 4G services disrupt any public service braodcasting such as the BBC then mobile service providers will have to spend millions upon millions compensating licence fee payers. It is legal minefield and potentially disatrous. I cannot see the UK launch being at the same time as the USA or Asian versions of Iphone 5 - Apple just wouldn't be able to marketed in the same way as UK consumers won't be able to benefit from 4G. Even when 4G is introduced in the UK the limited coverage means the Iphone 5 will have limited capacity and I would expect many handsets to be returned due to disappointment during the 1st few weeks. If the UK don't sort out 4G capability sooner rather than later economically they will fall even further behind the USA and Asia than they already are.
