The iPhone 5 goes on sale today, and being sticklers for tradition, Apple fans have emerged in droves to congregate, queue and eventually purchase the anticipated new mobile.
Click through our photos above to ogle the mystic spectacle for yourself, and be introduced to the chaps at both the very front and very back of the hundreds-strong queue.
First into the Apple Store in London's Covent Garden was Ryan Williams. When I spoke to Ryan he had just emerged triumphant, clutching two iPhone 5s, still in their plastic wrap."We've been queueing here for about a week -- a week exactly, to raise money for Cancer Research UK," said Ryan. He and his queue buddies auctioned an iPhone 5 on eBay just before the phone went on sale, for just over £1,000.
"We were going to pay for it using our own money," Ryan explained, but a company stepped in to sponsor the purchase. "We've got a JustGiving page and we've sold one of our seats [in the queue] as well, so we've raised about £2,500."
When I asked why they wanted to queue for charity, Ryan explained, "I've got a friend who's just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, so I'm doing it for him, I wanted to do a nice thing for him, to show that I'm supporting him."
Ryan told me his queue partner Peter King, who sold his space, lost his mum to cancer when he was 16. "Cancer's kind of close to our heart," Ryan said, "so it was an obvious choice doing something for charity.
"There's so much media attention surrounding Apple queues, so we thought if we can do it for a good cause there's obviously going to be some media attention and interest surrounding it."
At the other end of the winding queue, I spoke to Martin who was -- when I spoke to him at about 7:45am -- at the very back of the line, which stretched out of Covent Garden and down several more London streets.
Believe it or not, Martin told me he thought the queue would be worse. He's never owned an iPhone, but has decided to make the switch now. I asked him about the iOS 6 Maps fiasco, and he told me, "It's not as good as Google Maps that's for sure."
Meanwhile, the queue outside the O2 shop around the corner wasn't quite so dramatic, with just three people waiting to nab an iPhone 5. Carphone Warehouse and Orange shops nearby were also perfectly calm.
I've witnessed my share of Apple queues, and I would say this is a larger gathering than I've seen in London before -- clearly the passion Apple instills in its devotees isn't dwindling.
Will you buy the iPhone 5 or do you prefer Android? Or perhaps Windows Phone? Have you been put off by the revelation that Apple Maps is rubbish? Tell me in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

media should report that at least half of those queuing are not iphone customers, but are just part of groups buying up the phones in mass and smuggling them out to other countries where its not available yet to be sold for a premium.
that's why the locked phones in o2 and other shops are not gathering any queues.
i've witnessed this first hand when i bought an iphone 4s.

Utterly absurd... Just back from doing the groceries at a shopping centre in Edinburgh... All the carriers have boxes of iPhone 5s and loads of staff in, but nobody in the shops. I walked into O2 and a rather self-important tosser with a clipboard held his hand up and said, "sorry - I need your name, this is a busy day for us". There were about eight staff in the shop, and one mum topping up her PAYG at the till.
Oh, and I played with iOS maps in Vodafone. Apparently the estate where I live now has a new shop called "Ajanta", but is barely discernible from space.

Where are all the old people Samsung?
anonymous 21 September, 2012 12:15
Do these people not work? How do they afford these overpriced sardine cans?
anonymous 21 September, 2012 13:05
Same old phone - suckers. Those people are all sad old fogies mentally.

I.m frankly amazed any of these people could find their way to the shop - but then I suppose a few of them won't actually be using iMaps yet.....

Oh well- todays the day that all the iphone 5 owners help apple fill their pockets to produce more substandard ripoff phones! Seriously ive got old sony lww android phone and it only cost £58 2nd hand and it does near enough anything. Its also got latest version of google maps that makes ios 6 maps look pathetic! Also has awsome stereo speakers that put any iphone to shame! Your all gonna pay stupid money for a stupid phone! Lol! Before you start calling me android fanboy I think that s3 etc are daft coz here I am with nice small phone thats fairly powerful 1ghz that does everything I want - fits in pocket easily, can use with one hand easily, better speakers than any other android/iphone, can play games like nova 3, dead trigger, max payne and many more and best thing is the price!

Lol at anonymous 12:17. I think there's something to that. Not sure what kind of jobs these people do that let them spend 1 week in a queue to buy a £530 phone. What a terrible use of time. I seem to remember a famous speech in which some guy who was reflecting on his own mortality said "your time is precious, don't waste it" (you guessed it. It was Steve Jobs).
Lol again @Damien2501 who is the most notorious, militant fanboy in the universe. He will buy anything if it's shiny and has an apple logo on it.

Whats the point in having all this bling? I wonder how many upset girlfriends there are this week when all their blokes have skinted themselves ip5! How many mealtickets, cinema tickets, concert tickets and romantic nights for 2 could you get for price of iphone 5? Im seeing some very distressed women out there! :-D

just a little heads up to the last few posts about the guy in the queue for a week. He was actually doing it for cancer research and not looking to sell it off to some third world country like most of the other people behind him

After waiting almost two years for "the next big thing" it hasn't appeared. I was expecting something cutting edge from apple and it just hasn't happened. I think all those people queuing aren't bothered about the technology they just want to say "I own the latest glittery apple thing".
I think there are phones out there that are a lot more cutting edge, I for one will be replacing my almost dead 3GS with one of those.

Why do you all care so much what people are doing? i use android but i really couldnt care less if people want an iphone, let them have one. Its there money and there time, they are allowed to spend it however they want.
A Non Mouse 21 September, 2012 16:56
@ robbiejormerod. You are spot on sir! That and as the first poster said a shedload of them will be resellers. Which begs the question why on earth would anyone in their right mind pay over the odds to have something that they will be able to have at retail two weeks later?? Utter madness!!

How I luv it and also to get 1 of it
anonymous 22 September, 2012 08:07
How do apple creat the q? You think of how many billion units eBay, amazon or tesco sell a day, every day, a store with 10 people selling a 10000 phones in a day equates to 10 phones sold an hour per person before a q is needed. Does anyone know how they do it and whether theirs an incentive for people to stand there?

A friend of mine sold me his brand new still boxed Samsung S3, his unwanted upgrade for just £200. He wanted the money to go towards the purchase of the new iPhone. Why didn't he upgrade to the new iPhone ? I wasn't going to ask because I can see only one clear winner here & its me not him.
PS. come from iPhone 4 to the S3 & there is no competition, yes its the older model iPhone 4 I own but the superior S3 is at least five years more advanced. Can now sell my 4 for a rediculous price, still !
