iPhone 5 owners complain of 'green glow', exchange handsets

So you got your iPhone 5, did you? You obviously weren't put off by the whole Apple Maps debacle. Or the fact that the black model scratches extremely easily (and that Apple considers this normal). Or the purple flare that shows up when you take pictures (normal again, apparently). Or the green glow, a new fault people are finding with their phones, Pocketnow reports.

Wake your iPhone 5 up from sleep, and the screen glows green around the edges. On some models, anyway. I think it's pretty hard to spot, as you can see from the above picture and the video below. But some say they complained about it, and Apple swapped their handsets for new models.

"To be perfectly honest, it's almost a non-issue -- as it does dissolve after a sec or so, however the fact it's there at all is unsettling and is getting more noticeable over time," writes a poster named 'Uelogy' on the forum over at MacRumors. Uelogy had his or her handset replaced by Apple, too.

See what you think from the video.

I know, blink and you miss it, right?

It only really seems to happen at the bottom of the display. And the fact it goes away after a few seconds says to me it's not really an issue. Though I can understand people being concerned it could cause problems down the line. And if you've just coughed up several hundred pounds for a new phone, you want it to be as near-perfect as possible.

There's no word from Apple on the matter yet. Quick -- somebody email Tim Cook and see what happens.

The iPhone 5 has been beset with problems since launch. Is this really an issue? Do you think Apple is letting its standards slip? Or are we just getting pickier about our gadgets? Let me know what you reckon in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.

Yet further proof that CrApple is far from the Jesus device that fanboys hold it out to be. The issues happen with every iPhone release. The fanboys all complain and are up in arms. Yet they still all go out and queue to be first in line for the next version, which inevitably has multiple issues that are handled unsatisfactorily by CrApple. Then comes the next version and the cycle repeats! Are we sure CrApple doesn't have some sort of subliminal brainwashing application on the phone? Or are the Fanboys simply too dumb to realise that they're being sucked in time after time?
(PS. I'm an ex-iPhone user, having moved on to better things after the joke that is the 4S)

to be fair, yes we may be a little picky but then again when you've plonked £500+ down for a phone then again it kind of gives you the right.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2012 11:43

For 500+ quid you shouldn't HAVE to be picky - the issues shouldn't exist in the first place.

I have to agree. You spend a very large amount of money on the phone, and it has all these problems:
Maps - because you can't downgrade to iOS5,
The purple that is coming out in photos - in which apple just says "just take a different photo", and now this.
This wouldn't be the first time either that things have gone wrong for the iPhone. Anyone remember when the iPhone 4 came out, and the signal was not great because people were blocking the antenna with their left hand ( I actually tested this with a few iPhone4 phones which my friends had. They weren't pleased to say the least...)
Now, don't get me wrong, Apple isn't the only phone maker that has made mistakes (I'm never buying an LG phone again by the way...), but these the most famous, and close to the most expensive phones to buy today. You would want to be sure that you are getting a device that is going to work, without issues, especially for the prices people are paying.

Mark Anderson 14 October, 2012 12:33

As has been said, these issues are pretty minor, but when the product is marketed at a premium price on the basis that it's the best thing ever then they shouldn't be there at all.

Close your eyes while turning your expensive iToy on, then everything is just peachy. Again SNAFU as Cook might say.

Apple will only bring the finest, charges the highest and paid the least for workers are the promises.

Hey Mark Anderson, if you bothered to look anon 11.43 already made your comment. If you can't think of your own keep it shut idiot.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 14 October, 2012 15:02

Hmmm...seems that the two big things with the iPhone is the 'just works' thing and the 'premium build' thing. Seems that you're supposed to put up with a stale OS that's looked the same for years because it 'just works' and it's the slickest out there, and you're supposed to put up with a huge price for something that is hardly top end spec because of the premium build.

Well, it doesn't just work anymore what with the maps situation and anybody who's used jelly bean knows that it's no longer the slickest thing out there. The so called premium build turns out to scratch easier than anything else and all these problems keep happening with the camera and now the screen.

The whole thing about specs not mattering is bollocks as well; they DO matter...try putting iOS6 on an iPhone 4 and tell me you don't wish you had chased the specs a bit more.

Hahaha yet again shitty iphone has problems which I suppose apple will soon enough say that its just NORMAL same as all the other defects, in fact I think the whole apple product is a defect, feel so sorry for the idiots buying this crap why do they keep doing it, iphone so boring and basic and so far behind in tech it just makes me piss myself laughing when idiots think they got the best out there hahahaha,

I love iOS but it looks like the iPhone 4S will be the last decently built phone that Apple make. My next phone will be a Nokia Windows Phone. As much as the tech sites play these down i have heard so many people saying they would consider switching to Windows Phone from Andriod and iOS. Its stable fast and will soon have enough apps to keep everyone happy.

I'm quite dissapointed. When it first came out I thought it was the god of all phones but Seeing all the problems it has...

I'm glad I got the s3 after my iPhone 4 not the iPhone 5.
Apple will probably tel consumers it's their fault, as they usually come out with garbage.
Obviously hasn't been tested enough.

No doubt the peasants who can't afford apple products will be gloating.

So the odd phone has a fault - big deal!

Problems after problems.... I'm not surprised. The 5 isn't a good phone at all. I am considering maybe going for the next iPhone but I will be interested to see what Samsung come up with next year with the S4. Apple have seriously gone downhill. Not good enough, Apple.

This green glow issue sickens and disgusts me. Tim Cook has one too many 'o's in his name and one too few 'c's. Good day

reports of dust/specs of metal under the screen, scratches out of the box and now a green glow? I would not be happy.

When complaining about an Apple product a couple of months ago an Apple employee told me that I was 'expecting too much from Apple'. That day, I also took my iPhone in (admittedly out of warranty by a month) to find out my options and was told that there was nothing they could do; I suggested that it might be a design fault and was told that the phone was 'designed to last 12 months'.

If I were clever enough or better informed about my consumer rights I'd have pursued it. Instead I bought a Nokia.

(For those curious, I was complaining about the trackpad and its ability to pop out of the case of a Macbook Air. The iPhone complaint was about a home button that had failed after 13 months from purchase.)

I received my iPhone 5 last Friday and I have the same green glow showing up when the phone wakes up. I called the support and they didn't know about the problem. They forwarded me to sales and they are replacing the iPhone within 5 days. No problem.

I am not going to discuss 'good' or 'bad' but HTC had the same problems a while ago with some units.

Had to change twice from Apple store!!!!! Yes the Iphone 5 had errors whilst sync not once but twice, within two weeks!!!!!! Add to it the replacement comes from a what looks like a recycle box and they are scratched at the edgers!!!! Apple did not bother!!! Unbelivable in UK

I've had my iPhone 5 32gb replaced 4 times by Apple themselves as I didn't want to deal with Orange UK, the last replacement was an upgrade from 32 to 64gb for free, the handset I'm using at the moment still displays the fault with the green screen glow.
