iPhone 5 is for old fogies, says new Samsung Galaxy S3 ad

"The next big thing is already here," says Samsung -- and it ain't theĀ iPhone 5. In a new advert for the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung is once again taking aim at Apple fans, suggesting the iPhone is for old folks.

In the ad, credulous hipsters queue for a new phone, white earbuds demonstrating their loyalty, even though Apple is never actually named. The queue-bunnies discuss the revelatory properties of a new headphone jack and dock connector, only to grow more and more disillusioned as they get closer to the front.

The real kicker is that a guy with a Samsung Galaxy S3 is revealed to be saving a place in the queue -- for his parents! Hey kids -- the iPhone is for old fogies! Meanwhile, the S3 is shown beaming a playlist between two hip young bucks using the Android Beam NFC feature.

Click play below to see Samsung take a swing at the iPhone 5:

You'd think Samsung would have learned to just let its kit speak for itself, especially when that kit is as smoking hot as the excellent Galaxy S3. A recent advert listing the features of the two phones backfired when fans pointed out the list omitted important features such as the iPhone's superior pixel density, or any comparison between their two app stores.

The problem with ads attacking a rival is they feel a bit desperate. As the features listed in the advert show, the S3 has a lot going for it and deserves to stand on its own -- so why advertise it in reaction to an inferior rival?

Of course, that's not to say Apple is above bashing the competition... Apple just saves it for the courtroom.

C'mon guys, let's rise above this petty squabbling -- and let's stop taking snide pokes at potential customers.

What do you think of the Samsung advert? Does Samsung have a point about the lack of changes in the iPhone, or does the advert miss the point entirely? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

I thought it was funny and informative. Last year's commercial was better though. And I really don't see this as a sign of desperation, have you seen some of the commercials that Pepsi made ripping on Coca Cola? Samsung is tame by comparison.

Honestly, while it's cheesy and exaggerated, it does reflect everyday conversations.

It's a great advert that puts its point across well, and for any Apple fans saying 'Samsung are well stoopid and out of order for doing this,' then they must have a short memory as they're forgetting that Apple did exactly the same a couple of years ago with the 'I'm a Mac, I'm a PC' adverts. So think before you open your mouths, Apple fanboys.

So, Rich, Apple were being "a bit desperate" with all the I'm a Mac adverts then?

Sauce for the goose.

Plus this is, of course, true. The iPhone is a nice easy solution for those who maybe get confused easily and don't like change plus the lighter weight will be easier on their old bones I suppose.

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:01

The im a mac/pc adverts had some class about them and didnt fully portray the people buying the other product as some kind of retard that cant think for themselves. This is a whole new level, thats the point. Samsung are making themselves look immature

Cool ad! I like it... Samsung are way ahead of competition with S3 in their kitty.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:16

I'm an iPhone owner/user, but got to say that this is pretty funny/well done. It does tempt me to take another look at the S3 - but I think there is little chance of me actually buying one, as the last time I held it I thought it just felt very cheap/plasticy in the hand and I don't really like the Android OS. I do like it's screen though and the shape of the device...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:24

Yeah! Coz old people are stupid!!!

*sigh*

Reeks of desparation - not to mention childishness.

anonymous's avatar

I like it ... very true ... but I am using IPhone 3GS waiting for 5 too ... I like the simplicity of my phone ... but I love Samsung ... LoL

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:31

I have to say, the galaxy s3 I undoubtedly a very good looking phone and the big screen is certainly attractive, and I love Samsung! However I think these constant negative ads are just showing people how much Samsung wants to beat apple and how they feel they have to justify their own products! I think that they should be proud of their products and not try to bad mouth the competition.

As for the old people thing, our population is increasingly aging, and therefore there are more old people. So, technically Samsung should be aiming to hit that demographic? They should be saying that the galaxy s3 is simple to use? Instead they are promoting, yes, promoting apple.

Free adverts for apple products? Why not Samsung?

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:32

I think the Sammy ad's are great. Everyone takes the micky out of iSheep in the real world so why not have a little fun i their advert. I don't think its desperate, it's just some (maybe you RIch?) will fail to see the funny side. It does have a point though, the iPhone is very popular amongst the older generations, mostly due to the fact that the lockdown of the software means they are unlikey to break it (the oldies break everything!).

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:34

There are really other ways to advertise the Phone without damaging another. Pathetic and childish.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:43

quite childish making an ad slating another phone, why not just big up your own phone?
i have no problem with samsung, although this s3 is plasticy..why?!
iphone 5 has to be the way forward, surely the amount of people queing shows its got to be doing something right.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:44

What a great advert, right on the money... it exposes Apple for exactly what they really do... I bet the iPhone 5s will be next... and guess what it'll have NFC! This is daylight robbery

anonymous's avatar

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 11:51

Someone writing/ reading this article took offense to Samsung taking a bite from the other side of the Apple! I use both and I feel its personal preferences on what phone you like the most also there should be a contest! A user/consumer contest that can show off the options, tweaks, and twerks of their phones and why they love their Samsungs or Apples the most? Apples or Samsung the most, for the easily offended! Contest Contest Contest!!!

@damien seems all bang on about is plastic! Do you have a fettish? Other stupid comments like 'Sign of desperation!' Are you stupid ,Samsung are not desperate, even stupid fanboys know that. LOL these funny apple fanboys stickout a mile! There just such emotional people.

So you fanboys dont remember the old apple ads!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 12:18

LOL my galaxy s3 seems to be designed for an old foggie living in an old persons home sitting in an armchair close to a power supply. I'm lucky to get 6-7 hours with eff all usage, this battery needs to be charged quicker than an old buggers nappy who's got diarrhoea.

As for the advert it's like Samsung have got little man syndrome definitely not cool makes me feel embarrassed when I hold my s3 in public gonna have to invest in a cover now.

The only light at the end of the tunell is that Nokia might just become the other way the cool way dare I say it the promised land (depending on battery life that is coz most of the apps on its and android are crap let's be honest).

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 13:05

I thought the vcommercial was funny and informative for those who may not be into the smartphone scene and are looking to move into that area. Do I think Samsung needs to do this ? No because ITS SOLD 20 MILLION phones and still counting. You've got to remember those folks who love the iphone will stay with it and a few will leave to come to Android. Samsung just keep making a great product. You are the the big dog in the yard now.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 13:10

Oh and by the way for those who feel that the Samsung S3 is not a well made phone go to Youtube and watch videos of the torture tests for the S3. you will be surprised if u are an iphone lover but not if you love the S3

Samsung are a bit late. 2 million iPhone 5s sold while they were brainstorming the ad back at HQ :/
And I still cannot stand that they brag about crazy-huge screens... 'Our screen's bigger'. I have a 40 inch Samsung TV right in front of me, doesn't mean it's better. Please can we get over the whole 'bigger screen is better' fad. That's more retarded than anything else. There is such a thing as too big. People who get sucked by the GSIII because the screen is bigger clearly don't know much about tech (PPI etc.) And iPhone fans are the 'old fogies'? Give me a break.

Apple fan's love Apple products. Apple hater's hate Apple products. Simple as that. Discussion is futile. Both are single-minded, both are inclined, both are subjective and both are stubborn. None will accept other arguments, they'll just love because they love, or hate because they hate. For everyone in between, they make up their own minds, one by one, regardless of these ads (on both sides). It just so happens that a majority prefer the iPhone.... Get over it. You don't like it, don't buy. You do like it, buy it. Then carry on living your lives.

I gotta s3 and its a slippery white turd and you know what they say "you cant polish a turd mate".
So if your a Samsung fan boy, the others a iPhone fan-boys I refuse to be associated with you LOT and im going the the geezers at Nokia and windows. At;east Bill Gates who still owns shares in Microsoft gives away allot of his money to charity.

Also, the I'm a Mac ads were equally childish and often portrayed pc users with very, very negative traits.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 14:46

I'm a Mac/iPhone/iPad user, but I have to say I love this ad. How does CNET get away with claiming the ad is all about stereotyping iPhone users as old fogies? Almost everyone in the iPhone 5 line was a "youngster", and the bit about saving a spot in line for mom and dad was all of 2 seconds! Even the mom and dad were probably under 60. 90% of the ad was about feature comparisons, and done so in a much less offensive way than the "I'm a Mac/PC" adds Apple churned out a few years ago. Good job Samsung.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 15:06

I swapped my iphone 4s for the samsung galaxy s3 yesterday.

iPhones are all exactly the same style ... just with an S or a GS infront of a number but hey thats my opinion.... i'm the type of person that likes to know his phone is in his pocket and with a bigger screen that's a bonus. I like to get more for my money and with the Samsung i got exactly that.

Enjoyed both mobile phones, hey they both ring , text , and able to surf the net Yippy!

When I bought the 3GS it was because at the time it was the best touchscreen smartphone around by far. When I bought the 4S it was because it was the best smartphone around, just. When I bought the Samsung S3 it was because apple has failed to keep ahead of the competition this year. Apple has really lost kudos this year with the patent battle, despite winning the court battle. Despite court cases around the world, the only one they have won was in the USA? Looks very bias to the rest of the world. Why didn't Apple win a single court case outside USA? mmm This win for apple will slow the smartphone industry progressing as fast, as everyone will have to be extra careful. In fact I believe the Apple will have to do battle with HTC now over LTE patents in their new phone. I doubt this would occurred if Apple hadn't pursued this.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 18:43

I'm an old 'fogey' and so's my dad who is 78. He's got a S3 and I've got a Galaxy Note (and am waiting eagerlyfor the new Note 2). My 76 year old father in law likes HTC phones. My daughter of 26 has always had iphones and yet has to borrow my phone when hers runs out of battery after 8 hours. She borrows my stylus pen and she's always complaining about being stuck with itunes while we old farts peruse the world of media at will....

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 18:48

I've watched this a couple times now and still find it very funny :D I believe that need to do more advertising like this to try getting the crazy fanboys to at least take a second and look at how good they really are. I wanted to want the new iPhone, but it didn't do nearly enough to sway me AND add the little bonus of having to buy an adapter. You're a billion, almost trillion dollar company and you're still nickle and diming people? Come on. Toss at least one in for goodness sake.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 19:22

It's such a funny ad because I only see older folk with Android phones as they are cheaper. I do smile at the posturing from both sides over which phone is best. The best phone is the one which works best for you. I'm not a tech junkie so new experimental stuff on the Samsung phones doesn't appeal to me. We have the latest samsung tv based on the picture quality which is stunning but the voice and motion control which looks fun in the ads is just plain awful. I don't see beg headlines about that! The press like to put down apple as it grabs your attention, android headlines don't get people so stirred up.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 20:34

Samsung do make funny ads.... But truthfully Apple are getting a little stale now. Apple hasn't been innovative for years now. Their OS hasn't really progressed as much as should of. Its still made for kids and tech plebs..... but worst of all is Apples compliancy on security. They need to step up now that they are on the map. How long does it take them to patch security holes?
I do really feel sorry for Apple fanboys this year, the iphone 5 must of been a really big disappointment. They cant really claim the iphone 5 is the best smartphone out at the moment even though its just been released......Keep telling yourselves that, but you know the truth this time around.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 20 September, 2012 22:33

The S3 wins hands down for me, it's just more practical. Expendable memory, interchangeable battery, and an OS that can personalised more. There's a reason why there are so many jail broken I phones out there. I will always chose practicality and usefulness over looking cool. I don't really care about how the case looks, 9 out 10 people I know will buy a case for their phone, be it an iphone or otherwise. In the end its just personal preference, an I prefer practicality .

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 September, 2012 01:14

Samsung is attacking Apple fans with their new ad, why point out features on the GS3 that aren't on the iPhone 5? if the phone was that good they should just let the Phone's hardware speak for it's self and stop pointing out features that are in some cases pointless to have, for instance a removal batter - Not Needed at all!. plus most features on the iPhone 5 make up for the ones that it doesn't have, all am saying is Apple mesmerise their fans even with a Phone that everyone had knew about for months and yet people still go and buy it even if the angst and enthusiasm has worn off slightly. Samsung = Apple Copier. Sorry to say it.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 September, 2012 01:29

iPhone until the end for me!!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 September, 2012 05:59

I have owned two iphones, I definitely weren't mesmerised by them but he 3GS was the best one around at the time and the same with the iphone 4. Unfortunately the iphone 5 has failed to keep up with the competition. So I be looking else where this time. Maybe a S3, been playing with my friends S3, to tell you truth I'm quite liking the Android OS, it feels more grown up and you can certainly customise a lot more. Finding apps market about the same, though I think the apps in google play are cheaper overall I wont quite be jumping on that route quite yet as I wont to play with a WP8 phone first. The WP8 is starting to looking like promising OS. Im hope Samsung produces one of them.

As with the adverts, its just marketing. Don't take them too personally. PC users didn't take it personally when Apple did those "Im a Mac ads, and as for those Apple 80s Ads....

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 21 September, 2012 06:05

Didn't Apple buy the iphone design of LG? I believe they did. Apple aren't innovators any more, just look at their OS, its very stale. Apple need to step up once again, unfortunately due to the "fanboy" following they will never need to.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 25 September, 2012 09:43

Aw common there is a whole series of S3 ads which are cool and really funny. Apple wasn't above doing this to the PC. Time to move and get a better phone.

No Google Maps, No Youtube, No NFC, No to iPhone 5.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 26 September, 2012 18:43

OMG Samsung has totally missed the point. Packing 100+ features in a phone doesnt make it more appealing. In fact, its overwhelming!! Especially when in REAL LIFE you are only going to be using 10 out of those 100 new features that the samsung galaxy S3 is offering. More is not always better. Ooooo and should I remind you that in order to share contect through NFC the other person needs to have a galaxy S3 as well...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 28 September, 2012 16:42

Should I remind you that ANY NFC-Enabled device can share content with each other?
Uneducated idiot is uneducated.

As for these butthurt Applefags, you really are making me cringe with your absurdly stupid remarks; Please do your research first before coming on here spouting your 'apparent' argument.

As to that previous comment there about 'too many features', that's what the S3 is about. It caters to EVERYONE in a single device. It is freedom. You can disable the features you do not want, if you so choose.
I could go on for hours destroying any and all argument that you can possibly come up with - But i'm afraid it just won't sink in. So this will do. For now.

It seems to me as if Samsung is using hype to sell a phone that they know will be obsolete in a few months. All I know is that I've had the white iPhone 4 for 2 years now and it never fails to amaze me in terms of how user friendly and convenient it is. I can't believe that people are using battery life as an argument for the S3. I have an iPhone charger in my car, at work, etc.. I never have any issues with my battery life. The Apple OS is extremely smooth and every time I tried anything else, I was in for disappointments. I guarantee you that the S3 will be completely irrelevant in about 5-6 months. That's why I believe they're hyping it up so much. So foolish consumers can blindly buy it. Sure, Apple updates their products all the time and it may be hard to keep up, however, the product you originally bought will never become obsolete like products from other companies do. I still have and use iPods from years ago. At the end of the day though, I buy Apple products because they're user-friendly. I can honestly counter any argument a Samsung user might have as to why they prefer the S3 over the iPhone. That NFC thing is so stupid too. I was shocked they put that in their commercial. Sharing music is a big deal now? What is this 2001? Most of us have access to any music we want anyways that we can put on our iPhone or on our iPods. I happen to have the Spotify app on my iPhone so I'm completely covered in that category. I will finish with one more claim: anyone who has the S3 will be in for a disappointment. Whether its while using the phone, it's in the near future when the phone becomes obsolete, or both, it will happen.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 1 October, 2012 19:03

Apple deliberately make their products obsolete...why else would they put in only 512MB of RAM in the 4S and iPad 2? SO they can slow it down with future software.

The S3 won't be obsolete anytime soon; the S2 outsells the iPhone 5 in the UK (as does the S3)...and the S2 is pretty old now.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 3 October, 2012 12:21

Honestly, this is a great commercial. It did exactly what it was meant to do. I am an iPhone customer. I went into AT&T to upgrade my phone and took a look at the new Samsung Android model and once I compared the two, I switched over to Android. I ended up with the Galaxy Note. After comparing them, I was so disappointed with the iPhone 5 that I made the switch to Android, something I never thought I would do. After having this phone for 2 weeks, I'm so glad I did. This is an amazing phone!

jake0812's avatar

jake0812 8 October, 2012 19:29

I smile every time I see the commercial. It rings true that there are those people who remain committed to Apple, regardless of the specs and features, just as there are those to Android. The commercial definitely is not hindering the sales of Samsung. This article http://www.mobilebloom.com/samsung-galaxy-siii-shows-no-signs-of-slowing-down/2222862/ reports that sales of the GS3 are continuing to increase weekly by an average of 9% and have been since the beginning of August. The week of the release of the Iphone 5, Samsung sales increased by 15%.

And lets not forget apple marketing with the retina screen, even thou theres superior screens out there, there still saying theres is the best! htc one for instance!
