The iPhone 5 is better at pleasing the UK's smart phone shoppers than the Galaxy S3, according to a new survey -- though the figures suggest neither is as well received as HTC's One X.
A study of a whopping 52,140 Brits, conducted by ondevice research between July 2012 and January 2013, asked smart phone owners to rank how pleased they were with their mobiles on a scale of one to 10.

The iPhone 5 scored an average approval rating of 8.21 out of 10 across those polled, making it slightly more likely to provoke the glow of shopper satisfaction than the Galaxy S3, which had an average of 8.09.
Those figures are pretty close, of course, and hint that the majority of S3 owners are absolutely chuffed with their glossy quad-core gadget. The high number of responses does make the 0.12 difference between the two figures more significant, however.
Blowing both devices out the water, however, is the HTC One X, which scored a scorching 8.47 in the buyer satisfaction poll.
That's a surprising result, as the One X didn't impress us in our review quite as much as the more refined Galaxy S3, and upon launch was plagued by reports of dodgy screen flex.
Those who threw down cash don't seem too fussed however, as the results suggest One X buyers are happier with their mobiles than folks who own rival phones.
A similar poll of 93,825 people in the US saw the iPhone 5 lagging behind four 4G-capable Android phones, which may suggest 4G is going to be a major force in which phones prove popular in the UK, once our own laggy networks get up to speed.
Are you satisfied with your phone? What do you like, and what do you despise? Demand satisfaction in the comments, or on our self-satisfied Facebook wall.

Shouldn't the headline be:
"HTC One X beats all in satisfaction test".
Or did that one not please your masters, Luke?

anonymous 14 February, 2013 12:23 - Totally Agree!
anonymous 14 February, 2013 12:34
100% agree with the first comment!
anonymous 14 February, 2013 12:49
Completely agree. I have an iPhone (I'm a simple soul!) and I disagree with the headline. It's very odd.

so you mean .3 of a satisfaction more for iPhone owners over Samsung 3 owners ? Stupid article !
SilverKhmer 14 February, 2013 12:51
sorry I mean .12 !

"That's a surprising result, as the One X didn't impress us in our review quite as much as the more refined Galaxy S3" Goes to show that CNETs reviews are just as rubbish as everyone out there thinks they are.
anonymous 14 February, 2013 13:08
How the hell did this come first?
The one X had no end of hardware issues and complaints from it's users, it also has terrible software support from HTC!
This has to be rigged or very inaccurate.

The editors probably know that some people such as yourself get their knickers in a twist at the very mention of Apple or iPhone....
Therefore more clicks, more views, more advertising revenue. Simple economics.
anonymous 14 February, 2013 13:56
I LIKE THE SCALE ON THE CHART - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM OF THE SCALE IS 0.3*! BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIRST BAR COMPARED TO THE LAST IS OVER TWICE AS BIG!! HA HA!!
I think with most things, if it was rated 8/10, or 4/5 it would be seen as a resonable endorsement.

It wont let me comment my entire comment together...CNET UK's review of the HTC One X was one of the worst pieces of journalism I have ever seen. Compare this article:

With this:

Good point Damien2501. Sadly, Natasha's departure didn't help make Cnet more objective or accurate in their reviews.
anonymous 14 February, 2013 14:51
Surely this is down to market saturation as well!
I know 1 person with an iPhone 5, I know 4 with S3's and 1 with a One X. If this kind of saturation was replicated then it doesn't really give a true picture. I have seen a load of Note 2's out in the public too!
Either way, HTC won the day hehe! I've finally disbanded from my original HTC Desire (Running Android 4.1) and now run a Nexus 4, ROCK ON!
anonymous 14 February, 2013 14:59
Cnet, maybe the reason 'the One X didn't impress us in our review' is because you call quad core and the size of the phone negatives and yet they are both listed as positives in your S3 review. Be consistent and stop favouring certain phones based on hype.
anonymous 14 February, 2013 15:07
I would love to know which company "sponsored" the market research
anonymous 14 February, 2013 15:16
Who are the various people (or maybe the same couple of people posting multiple times) who are making abusive comments about Cnet and some of its writers? I don't know the history and the politics of this, but it is extremely annoying to read these comments. If you don't like the style of Cnet, go and read another site - what is the point of leaving rude or abusive comments here?

This is no surprise. HTC are capable of making quality phones. I used to love my HTC legend, the design was amazing. It is just a shame they have fallen by the wayside a little. Hope they can up their game with their new releases.

"The editors probably know that some people such as yourself get their knickers in a twist at the very mention of Apple or iPhone...."
I own a Macbook. Nice generalisation though, sparky.

I think my phone has a virus because every time I try to comment its considered spam :-O I was meant to write before: its the same 'journalist' contradicting herself, on some of the points where the HTC One X was criticised, the Galaxy S3 was praised.
And a minority of users of most 2012 phones - including the iPhone 5, One X & Galaxy S3 had problems, but the tightness of these results show the vast majority of people are happy with their purchases.
anonymous 14 February, 2013 20:32
Being a bit pedantic I stuck the number into an Excel spreadsheet and put the base at 0 and guess what there is bugger all difference between all of them, fag paper type differences. However having used HTC phones for the last 8 years [before HTC were known as HTC] I can understand the results small difference there maybe.

I think the real moral to this story is if you choose a top of the range phone chances are you will be glad you did

I always check out this website for iPhone alternatives - www.microsoftapple.com - My personal favourite is the Nokia Lumia because of the camera and speed of the operating system.

LMFAO. It's ironic that the One X's user ratings is higher than your rating while the S3's user ratings is lower than yours. You said "the One X didn't impress us in our review" and in the list of cons for the One X were "Massive handset won't suit everyone; Battery life is questionable and Quad-core is overkill for most people". Yet on the S3 you guys wrote in the pros "Gorgeous 4.8 inch 720p screen and Quad-core processor". Considering both have a quad core processor and the S3 actually has a larger screen than the One X shows that your review is full of rubbish. Also, both phones have a similar battery life (although you can expand the S3's).

Sites like Cnet are supposed to help people make an informed choice when choosing what to invest their hard-earned cash into. At least relative objectivity is essential.
As pointed out by previous posters, it's completely illogical to label certain features as drawbacks in one set, while hailing the exact same features as advantages in another.
CaptainPicard 15 February, 2013 10:37
I own a HTC One X and it is a brilliant phone, but even I'm shocked by this because battery life sucks on the One X, even with the Jelly Bean battery saver, I regret not getting a phone with a removable battery. The One X was also cheaper than the Galaxy S3 on Pay monthly contract, One X owners got the same technology as Galaxy S3 owners for atleast a hundred pounds less, on mid range tariffs- A bargain, I'd say!
And I agree with bregor, that article was pure BS, also the author is clearly biased in general, in a comparison of the iPhone 4S camera and a Sony Ericson phone camera she said the iPhones camera was better...But is was Sony that made the camera on the iPhone 4S...

HTC is ramping up PR & enticing users to vote for the One X via the HTC Elevate program. I can tell you I dumped the One X because in the USA, HTC's Android update process has become worse than even LG's. The AT&T variant of the One X, to this day, still has not been updated to Jelly Bean. Samsung is starting to pump out updates, as is Sony & Motorola. HTC on the other hand, can't make up it's mind, stating "we are going to stick with releasing less devices & have a unified flagship", then stating it is the One X, no...the One X+, or maybe the Droid DNA, or the Evo 4G LTE, no, wait...It is the M7/One. HTC has become synonymous with abandoning devices after six months here in the US.
anonymous 15 February, 2013 19:09
This is a comment baiting headline. All been said before above, these results are close being 1.2% difference between Samsung S3 and iPhone 5. The real headline is One X comes top. Well done CNET a successful article!
Damien2501 16 February, 2013 14:26
@George I agree that HTC suck on updates but Jelly Bean is soo over rated, it's really nothing. ICS is perfect, the least HTC and other Android OEMs should update all their phones is to Android 4.0. And HTC is the only Android OEM to release ALL phones with ICS+ in 2012.
anonymous 16 February, 2013 17:03
Yeah another CNET headline showing their fixation with Samsung and apple. Any one wanting unbiased reviews go elsewhere!
anonymous 18 February, 2013 13:12
HTC are doing so well, The critics will have to admit that they don't need a come back because they were never gone just mis-guided . Lets see their innovation come out on top! The handsets they produce are always a pleasure to use
Good luck and well done HTC

Come on Luke, lets get over your apple biased reviews!
I've used all the phones and have to say hands down the Note 2 blows them all away

Don't worry Luke, make your bosses happy by writing some more garbage like this and you will earn your promotion some day.
anonymous 21 February, 2013 10:48
I am starting to think reviews are a waste of time beyond basic information.
I bought the LG Optimus Vu without finding many reviews and the few I did find saying the phone was nothing compared to the Note 2. Yet it was outstanding for most of my everyday needs (typing, multi-tasking, social media, reading pdfs, etc...) and was not that brilliant in multimedia (e.g. video camera, video viewing where 4:3 is a disadvantage).
Then I got the Galaxy Note 2, which had brilliant reviews, and I was surprised. Yes, it has a better camera and is more suited for video playback, but it is worse for typing, multi-tasking (with the exception of the handful of apps on multi-window) and social media. Plus the Samsung skin is far uglier than the LG one.
So I really don't get why the reviewers all panned the LG vis-a-vis the Samsung, when actually the LG is probably more useful as a day-to-day phone.
Similarly, when my wife got the iPhone 4 and I got the LG Optimus 3D, I never felt her phone was better than mine and neither did she. In fact she complained a lot more about her phone than I did about mine. Yet her iPhone received rave reviews whereas the LG was panned.
Seems to me that marketing departments spend an awful lot of time trying to convince reviewers that their phones are the best. I'm not sure how they do it, but I have less and less faith in tech reviews every day.
