HTC Touch HD: An iPhone for the rest of us

HTC has just announced the launch of HTC Touch HD -- a 5-megapixel quad-band multimedia handset, aimed at both consumers and business users.

It's got a 97mm (3.8-inch) touch-sensitive 480x800-pixel (not exactly HD) display, 512MB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, 7.2Mbps HSDPA data access, stereo Bluetooth, GPS navigation and the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, supported by a 528MHz CPU.

HTC claimed in a press release that the Touch HD offers download speeds "up to18 times faster than standard 3G," which is, let us say, a chin-scratcher. We expect this is something to do with the Opera Mini browser being used, but we'll have an update for you when an HTC spokesperson returns our request for comment.

Anyway, a secondary VGA camera gears the Touch HD up for video conferencing, and that big ol' screen should be pretty good for watching movies on the go. And HTC has done something admirable that Sony Ericsson should take note of: it's integrated a standard 3.5mm headphone socket for music use.

Specifications-wise, the handset is certainly capable of wowing its users with multimedia and Web functionality. But even with HTC's TouchFLO 3D skin, Windows Mobile is the last interface any of us here at Crave want to have to endure to view movies and music, so we'll be waiting for our review unit to arrive before slapping the 'Sell-A-Limb-To-Buy-This-Now' sticker on its glossy black face.

It'll be available by the end of the year, though networks and prices have yet to be disclosed. -Nate Lanxon
