HTC Desire HD will update to Ice Cream Sandwich, but when?

It looks like the HTC Desire HD will get Ice Cream Sandwich after all. After a Canadian network revealed the update had been cancelled, HTC has confirmed the upgrade will still take place as scheduled.

Canadian phone network Telus Canada claimed "HTC has cancelled the HTC Desire HD ICS upgrade due to poor device performance during testing", an assertion the Canuck network contacted us to confirm. But HTC has now reassured owners of the Desire HD and Desire S that they're still due for an update to the newer version of Android.

HTC says: "We remain committed to providing customers with the latest software updates when possible. As such, we are pleased to confirm we are still on schedule to deliver an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for both the HTC Desire HD and Desire S."

It's good news for Desire owners, but feels like a hollow victory to me. Hey guys, you're definitely going to be able to update your phone to software that's a year old and has itself been superceded by another version, but we don't know when. Whoop-de-doo! Pop the champagne and light the fireworks!

The Android update situation just seems to get more chaotic. I love Android and (most) Android phones, and I'd really like it if the whole update circus surrounding every phone would end so we can go back to focusing on the many things that are cool about Android.

Why is Ice Cream Sandwich such a headache? It's not just HTC struggling to update to Ice Cream Sandwich -- the majority of phone manufacturers are still languishing on the previous version, Gingerbread. Even app builders can't seem to get their heads round the software: Sky launched its Now TV Android app today but failed to make it work on ICS phones including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S2, and HTC One X.

Sure, once they've got your money there may not be much incentive for phone builders to update your phone, but updates are a reality of the phone market now, so all we ask is to be kept informed. When you've forked out for a new gadget, you don't want to hear that it's been left behind after such a short time.

Do you have a Desire? Are you frustrated by the lack of Ice Cream Sandwich, or is it enough to know it will be updated some day? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

What I would like to see is companies focusing on the hardware and stop tampering with the software. This would make it easier for companies to update by using the vanilla version of android. Currently I'm using the Galaxy Nexus which now has the Jelly Bean update.

This is a solid os with the new voice search (Basically a lot like siri) and google now which is super cool and super creepy at the same time lol. Basically what it does it gives you information depending on where you are, time of day and on your searches. For example, when I wake up it tells me the weather. When I drive to work it gives me a traffic update before I leave the house or when I'm at the bus stop it knows where I am and pops up with the bus schedule. It's something else.

I hope google work with other hardware providers to make this happen on a larger scale than the galaxy nexus. However, at the the moment, I am happy to stay with the excellent Galaxy Nexus.

Terrible reporting. There's still so many questions and you've made little to no attempt to clear them up. Is the update canceled for telus customers still? Why did telus say that HTC, specifically, canceled the update and not themselves? Was there simply a miscommunication between telus and htc? What the heck is going on here?

I've a Desire Z. At a guess, I won't be getting another update, ever- and no-one is making phones with decent slideout keyboards either. *sigh*

This could be a future problem for Android. All this confusion over whether a phone will get new software updates or not may lead to people being put off. Google needs to really take control of how it updates its phones like Apple and Windows.

Telus must have high standards considering ICS has been running on the Desire HD and Inspire 4g for months now. Only thing wrong with the ROM is video camera won't shoot above 480p and some people report mms not working ( think that is an easy fix though. Wrong APN settings ). HTC should just release the drivers and let XDA do the work for them.

My HD is on Gingerbread and I'm not sure I want to "upgrade" to ICS (which I use on a tablet).
The problem is not the phone or ICS, but the apps. At lease three of my most used apps aren't available in ICS mode. In fact one has only just come out for Gingerbread. There is alot to be said to for standing still once in a while.
