HTC Desire getting Gingerbread by the end of the month

The HTC Desire will be getting an update to Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, by the end of this month.

The timing of the update was revealed via a Facebook post by HTC UK. The status update reads: "Hi everyone. As some of you have seen already, we have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire.

"Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July. Thank you again for your support."

If you own a Desire on contract, you may have to wait a bit -- generally speaking, receiving an update from a carrier can take a bit longer than getting it direct from the manufacturer.

The journey to equip the Desire with the latest version of Android has been a bit of a saga. Originally HTC announced that it wasn't going to bring the update to the Desire at all, claiming that the phone didn't have enough memory to handle Gingerbread.

Desire owners were unhappy with the news -- because, y'know, it's nice when manufacturers don't stop supporting a phone that's barely a year old. So HTC backtracked, posting to Facebook: "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire."

Gingerbread is a fairly minor update that adds only a few extra features (for the lowdown, check out our complete guide to every Android version), but it's more the principle of the thing -- anyone tied into a two-year contract would be upset to hear about updates to their mobile drying up half-way through that sentence.

It remains to be seen exactly how Desire handsets handle Gingerbread, though if you've lost patience and have decided to flash your Desire with an unofficial rom (read: performed l33t haxx0r moves), then we'd love to hear how your mobile's performing. It'll be another month, then before O2 slap their logo and other crap onto gingerbread. By then, there will certainly not be enough memory to use the phone - it's already creaking with all the apps despite the APP2SD function.

haha oh Luke you make me laugh :P

but yea its hardly that much of a task to actually root and put a custom rom on...hell theres plenty of baby step style "my first rooting and rom" guides on sites like Android Forum etc or over at XDA...hell I managed it pretty well myself.

I'm running a rooted Desire and custom rom, although my rom is actually based off 2.2...as I've not REALLY seen the need to upgrade to 2.3 really for not much that it brings, given that I already have Apps2SD+ which is tricking the phone into believing that the 1GB partition on my memory card is actually internal memory..

No mention of the legend then? Shame would have liked to have seen a few working custom builds from that!

I've had gingerbread for a while, first I had a vanilla version (without sense) but then I got a version with sense because I like the sense clock (that's the only reason I don't even use sense) the vanilla version was a gazillion times faster than the stock rom and the sense rom, but I like clock, clocks are important. Anyways it works fine, no errors that are really annoying, plus I have hd video and other cool features that HTC forgot to implement.
