HTC Android 4.0 plans revealed, no update for low-end phones

What could be better than a lovely big list? How about one that details when HTC mobiles will get Ice Cream Sandwich? HTC's made a bumper compilation of its smart phones, detailing when each blower will be blessed with a bite of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Taiwanese company says that the majority of its phones will be receiving ICS in June and July, with updates for all announced devices expected to be finished in August.

Many of the phones on the list aren't out in the UK, so I've made a UK-specific list below -- check out when your phone is getting updated.

Not every gadget will be feeling the cool kiss of Android 4.0. Tablets including the HTC Flyer are sticking on Honeycomb, forcing owners to manually interfere with their slate's software (a tricky and risky business), if they want to experience the latest version of Google's mobile operating system.

HTC says that, "in general, devices with 512MB ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0". That means less powerful phones like theĀ HTC ChaCha, Salsa, Wildfire S, Explorer and others are plum out of luck.

When it finally hits your phone, the update will arrive with Sense version 3.6 -- an older edition of HTC's Android skin than what you'll find on new devices like the HTC One X, which has Sense 4.0.

That's because, "Some aspects of Sense 4 require dedicated hardware, which is not available on all devices," according to HTC.

There's one mobile unaccounted for -- the keyboard-rocking HTC Desire Z, which was released alongside the Desire HD. HTC told me it had no more information to offer at the moment. If I hear anything else, I'll let you know.

Is your phone on the list? Have you been kept waiting too long? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

UK HTC Ice Cream Sandwich updates

  • HTC Desire HD: July-August
  • HTC Evo 3D: June-July
  • HTC Incredible S: June-July
  • HTC Sensation: March-June
  • HTC Sensation XE: March-June
  • HTC Sensation XL: April-June
  • HTC Rhyme: June-July

512 mb ram* not ROM.
It makes sense, my i9000 struggles with ICS cos it keeps running out of ram.
same story with Gingerbread though...

HTC One V.....512Mb RAM....runs ice cream sandwich + Sense 4.0

Their argument is invalid, and the fact that many who bought the flyer in the price cuts and the jetstream in USA with its $700 (ouch) price tag are going to be MAD

i meant invalid argument regarding android 4.0 , not sense 4. Sense 4 is related the cool features in imagesense which are hardware related

The article is right. It means ROM, not RAM. In a phone this the area area where the operating system is stored. However my HTC Desire has a tiny ROM and I have an Ice Cram Sandwich operating system (http://www.sandvold.as/) running on it smoothly. I reckon that Sense 4.0 is the only thing stopping the older phones getting an official taste Ice Cream Sandwich.

So, HTC update their phones 2-3 after Samsung updates the S2, and there is no anger, no criticism, all of that was saved for the company that actually updated its most popular phone a long, long time before anyone else.

Who would have expected that. All those people say they won't buy another Samsung and will switch to others like HTC. Humm...

Shut up. You don't know what you're talking about.
HTC Sensation(s) were the 1st phones to get ICS update.

Just have to add my voice to billfred's in saying the Sensation was the first phone to get an ICS update so you don't know what you're talking about and don't say that they've only updated one phone since so have Samsung.

To be fair, Samsung made the first ICS phone.

Anyway, I suspect my point has been missed. When was the Sensation updated? March? The Galaxy S2 was updated in April.

So here is my point. Samsung were absolutely hammered for their 'slow' update, but the fact is that pretty much the only phone to be updated earlier, and only by a few weeks, was a single range of HTC phones. So, now comes news that HTC still haven't put the updates out for most of their range, and yet no one is angry, no one is saying they'll stop using HTC phones or Android. Similarly, Sony still haven't updated their phones and have said the one update they did release they released too early. And again, no anger, in fact, like this article, hardly any comments about it.

And yet, whenever there was an article about Samsung's 'delay', the comment boards were full of people very, very angry, saying they'd never use Samsung again. But, the fact is, that only HTC did their updates sooner, and even then it was only a couple of weeks, and only one phone.

In fact, the Google Nexus S didn't get it's proper ICS update until April.

People just seemed so quick to rip Samsung apart over the ICS update thing, but the truth is that even Google couldn't get their update out significantly sooner. I'm not saying one company is better, and yes, I got it wrong on the Sensation, but, again, my point is that the publicity was far more prolific and far more negative for Samsung than anyone else, even the companies that STILL haven't finished their updates.

And by the way, a little bit of respect wouldn't be bad guys.

Difference is Samsung promises an update (even says it's out) then just goes back on itself. Multiple times. I personally don't see why people have been getting so angry about it. It's not like their phone is useless (or even will become hugely better with ICS). It's got to such a huge furore simply because the S2 was so popular.

Oh and you have to earn respect. Maybe by having your facts straight.

It's a good enough point you make. I think it was just people being impatient really I mean ultimately there's no reason why Samsung/HTC should give you a free update. Although I do think that the fact that Samsung kept giving dates and then not reaching them definitely wasn't good. Also there was a definite lack of communication from HTC regarding the Sensation update which was also annoying.
Also sorry for being rude it's just easy to get defensive because there's so often people talking nonsense. Sorry :/

Excellent news, albeit a lot later than anticipated. I'll definitely be hanging off upgrading my trusty DHD to see if there is a noticeable improvement in ICS from what it's using just now.
