Samsung Galaxy S2 owners who bought their device SIM-free are at the back of the UK Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade queue, Samsung has confirmed to CNET UK.
And the reason you've been kept waiting? It's because Samsung is waiting for some mobile networks to finish testing the update, so it can be sure the software will work whatever network you're on.
SIM-free S2 owners will get the ICS update "once we've got all of the operator pieces on board", said Simon Stanford, VP of Samsung Telecommunications and Networks for Samsung UK and Ireland, speaking exclusively to CNET UK today.
The upgrade process Samsung has used to push out ICS to S2 owners means SIM-free devices can't be updated until all mobile networks have tested and approved ICS -- and since some operators are still testing and approving the update, some SIM-free S2 owners are still waiting to get Ice Cream Sandwich.
'It's got to work'
"We work in conjunction with our partners to bring ICS to the existing base -- that's primarily what needs to happen, whatever network operator that may be," said Stanford. "In this particular instance, the open market variant [ie SIM-free] you would expect to come out first."
Stanford confirmed, however, SIM-free S2 owners have been left twisting in the wind. "As an open-market customer you will be on a variety of networks, so it's got to work on whichever network you have chosen," he said.
SIM-free S2 owners -- many of whom shelled out extra upfront for an unlocked handset in the hopes of being at the front of the upgrade queue -- have in fact trailed operators such as Three, which was the first operator to release the ICS update. O2 has also now pushed out the ICS update.
"We were working with our operators to make sure that we brought it out to as many people as we can," Stanford added. "Vodafone we're expecting imminently [to release ICS]. Open market will be once we've got all of the operator pieces on board... It'll come at very much the same time."
'We don't want to disadvantage anyone'
Stanford would not confirm exactly how many SIM-free S2 owners have received the ICS update so far, nor give a completion date for the ICS update rollout -- he would only say: "We're really pushing it hard over the next coming weeks."
"It's always very tight, in terms of the testing processes and all the rest of it," he said. "It's not a switch in Korea and then the whole thing just activates every device that is out there... We work very closely with the networks to help them get ICS out.
"Everyone holds their hands up and says, 'Well, we need to do more in these instances.'"
Asked whether consumers would be better off buying a device from a network rather than SIM-free if they want to ensure they get future Android updates promptly, Stanford said: "In this instance [they would have been better off on a network]. Moving forward, I anticipate the upgrades will come a lot faster, at once, with everybody."
He added that it's not Samsung's intention to prioritise SIM-free device buyers in future, rather it wants to level the playing field so everyone gets the update around the same time.
"We don't want to disadvantage anyone, we don't want to say that they have to buy it from anywhere, we want everyone to have the same experience, whether or not it's open-market, network, to us they're exactly the same," he said.
'Communication can be managed better next time'
Stanford conceded that communications is an area where Samsung can make its own improvements. And he apologised to any SIM-free S2 owners who have been disappointed by how long it's taken to get ICS.
"The communication itself can be managed a bit better next time," he said. "It's just an ongoing process piece that we work very closely on to try and make sure we get it absolutely bang on so we apologise to anyone -- we really apologise to anyone -- who has been disappointed by this.
"We're always desperate to get [updates] out as fast as we can, there's no reason for us not to. We don't like to have unhappy customers, it goes against everything that we do. We do take it very seriously. It's communication sometimes we need to work on -- I accept that. That there needs to be perhaps more overall communication with the partners involved as well," he said.
"We are happy now that ICS is rolling out and those people that we've spoken to are very happy with it," Stanford added. "We're always looking for ways to speed it up -- with regards to Galaxy Note... the upgrade on that will be a lot quicker."
Are you still waiting for your SIM-free S2 to be upgraded to ICS? Let us know in the comments, or post your own update over on our Facebook page, and watch my video below to see what you're missing.

Glad I ditched my SIM free SGS2 and I won't be going back to Samsung after this.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:18
This is so stupid, if they said they found some late minute bug I whould of accepted it.
Who here has brought a branded phone and unlocked it to use a rivals sim in it? I know at least two ppl who has SGS2 who has unlocked the phone and used a diffrent network sim.
"The communication itself can be managed a bit better next time," I say communication has to be A LOT BETTER. Do not lie to your customers.
Let the hate letters begin.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:18
If they have to wait for T-Mobile to finish testing it, they'll be lucky to get it before July 1st !!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:29
If this is the way Samsung treat customers who pay over the top prices for the sim free phone I wont be buying a Samsung phone or tablet ever again.
If I buy a sim free phone I expect to get the upgrades first, not last. All Samsung had to do was send out a disclaimer with it and let people make a choice.
Shame on you Samsung.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:29
Still no ICS update for my Sim Free Galaxy S2, Samsung really need to work on communication. They have a valid reason wanting to wait to see if the ICS release works on all network operators but why did they not say this from the start? I would of been happier if around the 19th March Samsung gave a statement to say the rollout in UK will start with the operators and then roll out to Sim Free devices and the reason. I still like the Galaxy S2, I am just frustrated at being bottom of the ICS pile. Moan over, back to NBA Jam......
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:36
Don't beleive a word of it. Samsung lied to their customers & now they're having to come clean they're still being patronising.
Won't be buying any Samsung products again.
Peter Hudson 4 April, 2012 14:37
I'm so glad I ditched my Galaxy S2 for a new iPhone.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:40
What a load of crap! Not only will I not be buying a Samsung phone again, I'll not the buying any Samsung product in future. It's got nothing to do with making sure the sime free phones work on all networks. They've obviously given in to pressure from the networks. Apple it is next time. At least they dictate the delivery of their updates.
Good bye Samsung, good bye Android.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:42
Christ it's a piece of software, what difference does it make. Peter Hudson you've spat your dummy out on just about every single piecce written about the S2 and ICS. If it bothers you so much that you don't have the latest software (on a phone which is great on Gingerbread and works fine anyway) I wonder whether you need to get out more.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:45
"We're always desperate to get [updates] out as fast as we can, there's no reason for us not to" Unless certain operators pay more for it I guess.....
"....and those people that we've spoken to are very happy with it" Yeah, all 3 of them.
"The communication itself can be managed a bit better next time" What communication? Oh, you're intending to start communcating, is that it??
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:49
I certainley wont be ditching the best phone out there, due to an update. chill out people it will come.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:55
My biggest problem with all of this was the lack of communication. This has now been addressed.
My second biggest problem was continually reading on sites like Crave that I ALREADY HAD THE UPDATE when I didn't. Now Crave are on the ball and seem to have got the scoop on this latest development so well done to them.
Why would anyone want to DOWNGRADE to an Iphone just because of a slow UPGRADE on their S2.
Apple might be better at rolling out new software versions but they're also bug ridden and unreliable for several weeks.... they let the public do their testing for them.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:02
About time we got some kind of information out of Samsung, I do love my S2, but the poor PR skills that they have show is rubbish. I'm not to fussed about ICS, but I would have liked to have been told what was going on. Secondly if the software is as buggy as what I have heard and not as smooth running as nexus ICS, why not just tweek that OS, so that it works on the S2, it should be that hard cause after all the nexus phone is still a Samsung. Atleast I can stop check Kies everyday now lol.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:02
To "anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:40" - Can I suggest you invest in a better keyboard before spending money on a new smartphone?
To "Peter Hudson" - You clearly still feel very passionately about a phone that you no longer own.... are you sure that switching to Apple was the right decision? Have you considered counselling?
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:04
Well its so unfotunate that my hard earned money was expended on a so called s2, though was confused by a friend who bought it from Tmobile network bopi.g it can be u.lock in Nigerians like otber phone, all effort, resources and time wasted with $600. Its painful
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:16
To "anonymous 4 April, 2012 14:40" - all is forgiven..... it looks like To "anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:04" is in much greater need of a new keyboard..... perhaps you could wire $600 to Nigeria to ease his pain?
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:22
If this testing is needed, how can it be that the unlocked SGS2 was available to buy in the UK before it was released by the networks? This is as rubbish as their excuse for not providing 2.3.6 saying that they were updates required for specific networks. Well it also contained UI changes, security improvements and bug fixes released by Google but I guess Samsung felt its unlocked device users didn't need those. Also how can it be that the 2.3.6 enhancement pack for the SGS1 (i9000) XEU version has been released before any of the network branded versions if they need to test for all the networks first. Can they explain that?
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:26
Peter Hudson you are a **** loser, its a software upgrade dont get out of your buggy about it mate grow some and get out more who cares. complete and utter *******
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:39
Tbh you are all quite sad complaining.
It's an update. Nothing spectacular about it; if you really wanted it, void your warranty and get it early. Half of you probably don't even know what it is like. I have it – tbh it is very much like GB, and very few changes.
If it was up to me, I would make you wait longer for your silly crying.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:53
I bought an unlocked S2 in France, and am now using it in UK with an O2 contract. Am I going to have to wait until all French mobile network complete their testing before getting the update?
Then what about the risk that I travel to an other country where the testing is not done yet? Maybe we should just wait until all operators of the 210 existing countries of the world are done testing!
It's not only a question of communication done right or wrong, I am just really worried that I will not get any Android update after this one, and if ever, with 6 months delay each time. That sucks. Even if it's unsafe, I'd rather have a way to force the update even if not 100% tested. I downgraded from ICS to Gingerbread once (because the rom I used was not compatible with my version of the phone), so I know it's possible.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:54
I bought both the S1 and S2 sim-free at launch, not going to be making that 3 in a row. The issue for me isn't where I am in the queue, it's more an issue of the ridiculous wait for TouchWiz ICS. It's wrong to describe this as ICS, that's been available for 5 months on Google branded phones. The only way I'll be buying another Samsung mobile is if they are chosen as the manufacturer of subsequent aGoogle phone. TouchWiz is the ultimate bloatware.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 15:58
The people who complain about not getting the most recent updates are kind of sad and funny. If there was a big issue with the S2, I could see your point, but this is the best phone I have ever had and frankly I am kind of scared to get ICS because I dont want it to mess that up! I think everyone just needs to chill out.
I dont see this update as a deal breaker, but hey that is just me.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:04
ROFL ROFL ROFL... bet you wished you got a contract like me, from carphonewarehouse...
FREE phone, 400mins anynetwork mins, 200M net, unlimited messages for £26 inclusive..
- and if you are in their 'geek squad' club,. they will put ICS on it free...:) :)
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:11
Will wait for the update to come out - still the best phone on the market.
However, waiting for the networks to finish testing? What a load of spin. The update hasn't been released due to contractual issues - none of the networks wanted to be the last so put pressure on Samsung to hold back on the SIM free update. I bet any bugs found in the network versions will still be in the XEU (Sim Free) update.
joebhoy 4 April, 2012 16:12
If it wasnt for the networks shovelling all their useless bloatware on the updates then we would all have it by now !!
Yes samsung could have told us about this from the start but at the end of the day its the networks who hold it up !!
Still ive had a good year out my s2 and gingerbread and ics or not i'll still have another good year till i upgrade !!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:15
HO HO HO... haters gonna hate... I am sure the big companies dont even care or know.. you are barely an atom to them..
go ahead find out how to buy direct from samsung!!! its only a short flight to seoul.. :)
I guess we will see you here agin, when apple does a similar thing :D :D :D
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:18
Well Android does it again
Its a shame that EXU S2's (Unlocked Galaxy S2) has to be last for an upgrade. I for one had a HTC Legend and had to wait ages for a GB update so remember this well, its starting to put me off with companies not sorting out an update like apple, world wide with no networks messing around with the OS. Maybe All android companies need to get together and state to the network. You will NOT mess with my OS and android skin that way it would ensure we get the update all at the same time.
I would like Samsung to explain to me why I will be receiving the update last as my firmware is "pure" and not changed by a network which is why .vod firmware takes longer to test as there adding their own bloatware to the phone.
There is no excuse for bad communication from an international company it shows they have a big internal PR problem.
I for one will be thinking hard about the next phone I buy, the next nexus phone possibly as they should get the update as soon as google release it, Or am I wrong about this as well?
CNET thank you for letting us know,
Shame this can't be seen from the Samsung website!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:19
Like a number of others here, I love my SGS2, and am happy with the current software. Major updates carry risk, so I would rather be at the back of the queue. I don't want the hassle of an unstable smartphone, and am not clear that I need the 'must haves' of ICS. Perhaps when I buy my next phone I will use my SGS2 to trial new versions. So, like others, I remain happy to wait for Samsung, and maybe even skip the first ICS release for the next one.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:19
I bough my S2 as at the time was the best phone on the market( including the Iphone 4S).
My opinion hasn't changed whither the OS is GB or ICS. I think everyone who is winging needs to chill as the only reason i can see for ICS is to show off to other people that the have the new android OS. Your phone works stop complaining.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:24
This is poor customer relations for a company as big as samsung my next phone will be an iphone 5
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:26
What a loud of rubbish there letting Money Rule and Bowing to network pressure as networks no people de brand to get ride of Network Bloatware
Yet as others have said yet another excuse for people to leave Samsung
tommo 4 April, 2012 16:32
Haha I love all the 'i will never by Samsung again' remarks. When was the last time your Samsung washing machine had a dodgy firmware update? lol.
Yeah that's it, I'm never buying Samsung again. I'm Apple iPhone all the way... unless it has issues like a rubbish antenna or overheats, and then I'm never buying Apple again.Ooh the new Galaxy S3 looks nice... etc. etc.
Funny thing is, I'm guessing there's quite a bulk of sim-free Galaxy S2 users (myself included) that bought it sim-free to reduce pre-installed bloatware and are tech savy enough to flash ICS (and many, many good custom roms of it) using ODIN or other means.
If you want easy street, buy it from a network provider. My S2 has been on ICS since January and it now on Sensation's ICS rom and is loving it!
Northerndj 4 April, 2012 16:35
It does help if the Roms that are done for networks work
Many choose to go open network as that is How Samsung want the phone to work and not how networks want it to work.
At the end of Contracts were left with a Bloated phone that no one wants
Manufactures need to stop this fragmentation and just have one rom
Apple does this and Samsung does for the Galaxy Nexus
Many of the S2 users are X Apple and will not stay with Samsung and go back to Apple
what ever they say they need to stop listening to Networks and start listening to the people that Buy the product hence why the Galaxy nexus is so popular cos people are fed up with the constant excuses
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:47
Thanks for the news. I am just looking for new sim-free phone to replace my N1 and for sure I will not consider to get a Samsung phone.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:51
IMO. T Mobile are waiting for the other network operators in UK to debug ICS for Galaxy S2 before they will provide release date.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 16:52
Shut up all of you. Samsung S2s are the best phones out there. Who cares if we don't get some rubbish update for a bit longer. There's things more important than that. You can phone and text can't you??? All you really need in a PHONE
TobesEtc 4 April, 2012 16:56
Do they mean sim-free, or unbranded?
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:10
Took them 2 1/2 weeks to admit what we guessed all along, thanks Samsung, the chances of me buying another of your phones is as much as me winning the tour de france with two flat tires and a broken chain
knobchops 4 April, 2012 17:20
Some people really need to have a reality check. I'm on an unlocked/unbranded phone and haven't got the update but will it stop me from buying another Samsung phone, maybe an S3? No, a delay in a MINOR and FREE software update doesn't even come into the top 10 reasons to buy/not to buy a phone. Some perspective is required methinks.
I am somewhat frustrated by the Kies software which, frankly, is a colossal dog turd. I've just launched it on my PC to be told there's an update available for Kies which I've duly installed. Not my S2 won't connect to Kies so, even if ICS was available for my phone, it wouldn't install anyway.
Will I buy an iPhone as a result of the latest Kies debacle? No, because in the grand scheme of things, these are only minor irritations and the S2 remains (in my view) the best pound for pound smartphone around even with the old, decrepit Gingerbread on it.
knobchops 4 April, 2012 17:22
Oops.
"Not my S2 won't connect to Kies so" should read "Now my S2 won't connect to Kies so".
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:25
If you're desperate for the ICS experience, and believe me it's no big leap, then if in UK download the Polish LPS version and install via Odin.
You can always install the XEU version when it becomes available via the same method.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:30
@**********, It's not the lack of fast tracked software update that's making me ponder moving away from Samsung, it's the utter lack of customer service support regarding this, the deafening silence on Facebook and twitter and even on the phone regarding genuine questions and concerns regarding the update (or lack thereof).
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:45
I love my S2 but unfortunately Im a scorpio....and I hold grudges. Samsung will never see one of their handsets or tanlets EVER again. Make me pay over the top price and then put me at the back of the ICS queue and then leave it two weeks before even telling me im at the back of the queue! Well, HTC here I come.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:48
I love my S2 and loved my S1 but unfortunately Im a scorpio....and I hold grudges. Samsung will never see one of their handsets or tablets in my hands EVER again. anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:53
Nothing but lies...
Someone already pointed out the fact, that I9000 XEU users got their 2.3.6 ICS-feature update first.
There are no mentions from any of the users all over europe who flashed the polish ICS versions on their SGS2 phones about it not working with their local providers. People have been flashing wildly firmware updates from other countries left and right and there never were any complaints about the network service failing.
Also in this explanation things like european network-standards don't seem to exist.
This big lie is just an insult the community of avid SGS2 users, who probably are the only ones who actually care and are the ones complaning.
I for one am willing to wait if there are bugs to be fixed.
But I'm not willing to take any PR-trash-talker to throw bs and lies in my face.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:56
I literally want to die RIGHT NOW
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:58
I just put my finger somewhere smelly
anonymous 4 April, 2012 17:59
The official line on Samsung Mobile UK Facebook page over the past few days has been, "we're working as fast as possible to bring it out to all our customers." However, the above comments from Samsung's own Simon Stanford contradicts this - Samsung are doing nothing and letting the networks do the work for them! Priceless!
I agree that the GS2 is still the best phone out there, even with Gingerbread, so although I look forward to receiving ICS, I am not going to make some ridiculous comment that I would never buy another Samsung, or worse, buy an iPhone! What you must remember with the Firmware updates is that the newer versions are written for phones/tablets with (often) improved hardware so may not necessarily work on older phones (GS2 included) without testing.
However, Samsung UK need to replace their PR Dept!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 18:14
Sorry but this is utter ********. I've now sold my unlocked S2 and ordered a One X. This is the second Samsung product I've purchased that they've failed to provide the firmware update on time for, so in the words of our Lord (Vader), you have failed me for the last time.
Late8 4 April, 2012 18:27
This is all ** and doesn't make sense. ! !<br />
<br />
Firstly why is Samsung relying on Operators to test firmware and launch first?<br />
Its up to Samsung to get a stable firmware version out so operators can test and add there own pile of bloat to the firmware before release.<br />
<br />
The Network/Operator side of things is just one small part of the phone and its firmware. Its virtually identical across the networks anyway both here and in Europe. Its not like they are trying to re-invent the wheel. <br />
<br />
Flashes of firmwares from other countries have had no issues on UK Networks. I'm on a "official" XEU 4.0.3 from XDA Developers which is contained in a Multi European CSC Package released weeks ago. - no issues with my O2 service. <br />
<br />
So far I have had 2 issues with ICS - WiFi crashed once or twice and the Default Mail app is playing up with windows live. Everything else is fine and smooth. <br />
<br />
There is virtually no difference visually between 2.3.6 GB and 4.0.3 ICS. Touch Wiz crap is the same and things like ICS Camera effects have beet taken out. <br />
<br />
I too wont be getting a Samsung device again. The user is last in Samsung's world. They are just bothered about churning as much out and selling as possible. <br />
<br />
There's a lot to be said by going with a company like Apple and the iPhone. At least you know where you stand. Support is better for a start- period.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 18:36
This will be a marketing disaster for Samsung. Not only will it drive their customers to other manufacturers, even Motorola are rolling out ICS, but the terrible communications and what I see as an outright lie will destroy any confidence in them. The lie? Well tell me which of their devices or for that matter any other manufacturers unlocked devices have ever had to wait until all the networks agreed to it's release in the past? Samsung should be ashamed. BTW their Facebook official line is still "We do not have any information" perhaps they should tell their CS dept.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 18:52
People get over it!!!! Boohoo. I didn't get the update :( Half of you don't use your S2 to it full potential anyways so shut up. ICS does not drastically change the current GB anyways so get over it or go buy a piece of crap iPhone, means I will get my S3 faster since you are not in line.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 18:54
This is wrong. I paid premium dollars for the sim-free unit and this is what I get!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 19:06
What utter nonsense - so are they genuinely gonna wait for every network!!!! Every network.... what worldwide???? Coz guess what - I take my phone everywhere!!! #Fail Samsung
anonymous 4 April, 2012 19:20
I call ** on this. Uk networks obviously have some sort of deal with samsung. Why have other countries sim free got the update on the same week it came out. They dont seem to have to wait for "network testing". Lies all the networks do is install loadsa crap apps n carrier iq anyway nothin much to do with will it work on this network lol
anonymous 4 April, 2012 19:23
I'd like ICS but I still love my S2 :) I'd would rather it work properly after the upgrade than be flaky and full of bugs. I'm happy to wait :)
anonymous 4 April, 2012 19:32
First and last time I buy a Samsung phone, iphone your is is so much better :-)
anonymous 4 April, 2012 19:42
Testing for what?
It doesn't have Carrier customizations.
That means less to test.
770 dollars for this?
I know i am a VIP customer but this is my FINAL and LAST Samsung product.
Its been a rocky ride from the Omnia HD to this.
Enough is Enough.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 20:37
Get over it. It's just a upgrade to a phone.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 20:48
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------<br /><br />
<br /><br />
Its ********. Did they wait until carriers sold millions of SII before releasing the unbranded. Not at all. They don't want to issue ICS to unbranded because you all will blame SAMSUNG when it crashes!! Where as if the update from the carrier then its not SAMSUNG'S FAULT..
anonymous 4 April, 2012 20:54
its taken over 2 weeks to come out and say "sorry" freaking hell that should have happened on day one, ohh maybe the VP was on holiday :-), truth is they know they screwed up and are still to afraid to admit it.<br />
<br />
using the excuse they have only makes it even more disgusting , not to admit and talk to customers earlier. <br />
<br />
it will most certainly "kill" the desire for sim free phones in the future, especially from Samsung who are now at the tail end of my list. the S2 had been an awesome phone , but the new ones coming out now are looking even better propositions. <br />
<br />
samsung you ****** up big style on this update and it's bound to cost you some custom, i think you should release an optional version of ICS without touchwizz downloadable by whomever desires it , in way of recompense to your disgruntled customers.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 20:55
Don't people realise the blatant lies from Samsung.
The ONLY reason networks need to tinker with the upgrade is so that it doesn't conflict with their bloatware, you know the annoying but undeletable software you get from the networks if you buy your phone from them.
Sim Free phones have no bloatware and hence can work on all networks, regardless of whether they have the ICS update or not. Want proof? Look at the people who have flashed ICS like the video suggests, can they get on all networks? Yes they can.
I am disgusted at Samsungs customer service, and now they are lying to us again. Yes again. Remember when they said that the update was out to sim free users and some people already had it? Now we know for sure that never happened.
I am never buying a samsung phone again, for me as someone who likes technology, swift upgrades are important to me. And regardless of that, I don't pay hundreds of pounds directly to Samsung for them to repeatedly lie to me.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 21:00
Can someone answer a question for me. Personally I am happy to be getting the update last if it means all the bugs and issues have been fixed, but from what I have read we will still get 4.0.3. Wouldn't it be better to fix the bugs by working with the networks, then release a patch with the fixes on to everyone (would that be 4.0.4)???
ace9988 4 April, 2012 21:22
thats a shot in the foot for samsung...alot of people people buy sim free phones to avoid the USUAL update debacle of operators slamming on their nonsense, and samsung have done exactly the opposite. hopeless to be honest

Samsung UK just demonstrated a really sorry excuse for logic in regard to ICS for its SIM-Free phones. To really follow it would mean Samsung UK has to wait till ALL cellular carriers around the world confirm the UK SGS2 SIM-Free works with their networks?!
Otherwise, there *might* be some unfortunate UK SGS2 SIM-Free owner that encounters problems when he moves to Timbuktu and use his phone with the local cell network!
Samsung UK... YOU SUCK!
anonymous 4 April, 2012 22:16
I just upgraded my 3 S2 handset to ICS, and it's awful. The battery drains really fast, the handset overheats, and it randomly freezes before restarting itself. I wouldn't complain about having to wait... I'd rather wait and have a working phone.
anonymous 4 April, 2012 22:22
BS. A load of incoherent lies that changes every few days and thinks the customers are stupid. Just old school management approach.
Will you test the update on the foreign network my SG2 is using too?
And if I upgrade on 3 and change to another network tomorrow?
Just grow up and respect your (now EX) customers Samsung UK :@
anonymous 4 April, 2012 22:40
Big companies like samsung don't give a rats *** if you're happy or not, nor are Apple for that matter, as soon as they have your cash you can whistle in the wind for all they care...<br />
We're all just cash fodder to them...<br />
The main thing is that the handset works and we all need to get over what version we're on....<br />
All apple users might get the updates zt the same time but that doesn't mean they all have a fault free upgrade...
olivierm 4 April, 2012 22:51
Disappointed with Samsung ? Well, don't try HTC for timely communication on these sort of things, but why should they, I am sure most owners will be puzzled and disoriented as to what's happening to their phones and calling support help line about how to get the old version back !
anonymous 5 April, 2012 00:04
Goodbye Samsung. At least Apple gave clear messages to their customers.
In this instant digital age all we want is clear and concise answers. The company who are not open and honest with it's customers is looking at going out of business PDQ.
With regards to the networks - one could almost say it looks like this was engineered between the networks and Samsung so they get it first and provide ROI through networks not Sim-Free
anonymous 5 April, 2012 00:04
If Samsung treat there customers like this think I'm going to move back to HTC
anonymous 5 April, 2012 00:13
Samsung all i can say is shame on you,That's why Apple are ahead of you.
People pls think twice before you go for any Samsung producta.useless company
anonymous 5 April, 2012 01:10
How a company can grow to the size that Samsung has with the things they have done regarding updates is unbelieveable! They may have one of the top phones now but just with the amount of dissapointment with their practices seen here they are in for a rude awakining. I'm getting very tired of Samsung's cute little stories every time they can't deliver as promised.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 03:00
I will not buy SAMSUNG again, I had HTC before and thought Samsung will offer a better user experience, I was wrong. TouchWiz is bad as it is and from what I hear ICT is not bringing anything extraordinary (note:Samsung Nexus) to the experience. I will go back to HTC or even change for Apple as my experience with Samsung handling the whole update for sim free models put my rating of this company at a joke level!
Apple must be now laughing their pants off at the commercials Samsung put up few months ago against the Apple fans waiting for their phoneas-how ironic is that Sammy?!
anonymous 5 April, 2012 07:43
Seriously Samsung, how long would it take to find half a dozen sgs2 owners in your own organisation on the different networks and just try each sim in the phone for a couple of hours? this could have been done in house in a day! enough with the ********
anonymous 5 April, 2012 08:02
What a bunch of baby **** jokers you all are moaning about an upgrade, go and get a life. Anyone so annoyed at Samsung they “will never buy Samsung again” hurry up and get lost so the rest of us don’t have to listen to you all.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 08:18
Also all you jokers, did your s2 come with a guarantee upgrade voucher...... no it didn’t. It’s a great phone on its original software the software you were happy to buy it with. I’m also waiting for my sim free upgrade but I won’t throw my rattle out of the pram!!
anonymous 5 April, 2012 09:43
never read so much rubbish in all my life, samsung knew all this from day one.
its in the carriers interest to delay updates to sim free phones.
orange will keep sim free waiting a long time
anonymous 5 April, 2012 09:45
I have ditched my Sim free S2. I bought sim free this time as I thought paying more for the handset would mean I would get updates first,
anonymous 5 April, 2012 11:45
Is there any news on when Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone will be releasing ICS, I know people are saying T-Mobile will be next year but is there any actual news on these releases - and I assume that is what Samsung are referring to - 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone or are there any more (or are they all included?)?
anonymous 5 April, 2012 11:58
Oh the whining
anonymous 5 April, 2012 12:14
This is THE WORST THING that EVER HAPPENED TO ANYONE, EVER. Like, almost as bad as WWI (though not WWII). I mean really Samsung, what were you thinking, not treating me like I was THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE WHOLE WORLD. I have literally *NOTHING* going on in my life and was looking forward to a pointless largely-invisible upgrade to ICS and now I HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LIVE FOR. Time to commit suicide by swallowing my charger AND I WILL NEVER BUY A SAMSUNG PRODUCT AGAIN
anonymous 5 April, 2012 13:01
As an O2 custpomer I have ICS. It installed fine and there are a few differences I notice, such as face unlock and a clearer Gmail interface with some upgrades.
But really, ICS isn't going to cure cancer, solve world hunger or bring about intergalactic travel. It's not even going to make your device experience all that different. Okay, you qualify for Chrome, but it's pretty rubbish in its present beta form any way.
Chill out....
anonymous 5 April, 2012 14:25
what to you mean no intergalactic travel? ive been plugging my s2 in 16 times a day for 2 1/2 weeks AND AS WELL AS NO UPDATE YOU TELL ME IT DOESNT HAVE INTERGALACTIC TRAVEL!!!!..... well thats it for me...im smashin all my samsung pruducts (3 tvs 3 phones amd two laptops) and getting all apple replacements and then killing myself...GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD ITS ALL SAMSUNGS FAULT
anonymous 5 April, 2012 14:47
C'mon people. Is it really that hard to just flash an official ICS rom for the s2? This is android, not crappy apple or some other os. The ICS rom is already available.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 15:07
Fed up of this treatment by Samsung, I bought a Samsung 3D LED TV on the day of release, and told my brother who bought one a year later in the sales. Disgustingly, his TV shows Game of Thrones AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME AS MINE, and I'm sick of it. I expect to be treated better by Samsung, early adopters need to be made to feel special, either by getting programs before everyone else or at least get a sloppy BJ and have their hands held when things Don't Go Our Way. It's just not good enough Samsung, sort it out or go back to Russia where you came from.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 15:11
The following is actual copy of typed conversation with O2 who advise that if I want up-dates promptly I should buy my phone direct from them and not through Car Phone Warehouse. This was on 04/04/2012
"Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
You're through to Ally.
Ally: Hi I'm Ally. How can I help?
David: I have a Galaxy S11 on O2 contract bought through Car Phone Warehouse. When will it update to Android 4 (ICS) Samsung Kies keeps saying firmware is latest available but other O2 customers already updated.
Ally: I'll be happy to help you.
David: Thanks
Ally: Thanks for the information. Please give me a few minutes while I check this for you.
Ally: To find out if you has eligible software, please open the phone application and type *#1234#. You will be given 3 different values. After the CSC value you must have a 13 digit code which starts I9100O2U. If it doesn’t start with this exact code then you are not currently eligible for the upgrade.
Ally: Is there anything else I can help you with?
David: My CSC:19100CPWKH1 (I DID SAY MY PHONE WAS THROUGH CAR PHONE WAREHOUSE) SO MY QUESTION IS "WHEN WILL O2 UPDATE PHONES BOUGHT THROUGH CAR PHONE WAREHOUSE? OR ARE THEY TREATED AS SECOND CLASS CUSTOMERS? EVEN THOUGH WE PAY O2 EVERY MONTH.
Ally: David as of now we dont have any time scale when it'll get updated.
Ally: Once it'll be done you'll be notified.
David: sO i'M CORRECT, WE ARE SECOND CLASS CUSTOMERS?
Ally: No, you're not.
Ally: We value your relationship with us.
Ally: And as you've taken the phone from carphone warehouse just contact them.
Ally: Let me check it.
David: yET o2 CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN GETTING THE UPDATE SINCE ABOUT 20 mARCH AND YOU CAN'T EVEN GIVE ME AN IEA OF WHEN MINE WILL COME, BECAUSE MINE WAS BOUGHT THROUGH CAR PHONE WAREHOUSE. CERTAINLY APPEARS SECOND CLASS TO ME!
Ally: I'm sorry but we have not received it yet so cant give you.
David: NOT RECIEVED WHAT?
Ally: The update for carphone warehouse customers.
David: Not Recieved it from O2 in Slough?
David: Your softeware people.
Ally: It'll take a couple of weeks.
David: So in future if I want prompt updates to any phones that I or my company need I should NOT buy them through Car Phone Warehouse but through O2 direct?
Ally: Yes.
David: Thanks for that I'm sure Car Phone Warehouse will be pleased to hear that!
anonymous 5 April, 2012 15:21
All the whingers, try an experiment.
When it occurs to you that it's time, go join the queue in the bank. Wait for a few people to join behind you.
Turn around and tell them all they are second class customers, because they are behind you. Keep telling them, even though they're trying to ignore you.
Tell the people in front of you they're suck-ups, and must have been kissing the bank's ass.
Drink in the looks (and by now, comments) you're getting.
Go home. Look in the mirror. Have a long think about your life. Move on.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 16:12
What I can gather from this statement is that samsung want to see if the ICS up will work with each carriers own bloatware installed on the phones? So if you have sim free then you wont have the carriers bloatware so you shouldnt have to wait?
anonymous 5 April, 2012 16:55
Ok..
Some advice:
Join Geek Squad if you have a sim free G2 and are using 3 or O2. They can put ICS on for you as the ICS updates has been released for these carriers.
Anyone on T Mobile/Orange, Virgin or any other network needs to wait until their version is released to that network's users - as your carrier releases ICS, join and then call Geek Squad and they can get that release onto your phone before the Sim-Free full roll out.
It does take 24 hours for your membership of Geek Squad to activate if you join online, so be aware help will not come immediately
Big Up to Allan at the Geek Squad for filling me in on this. He knows his G2 stuff, and feels our pain - he's waiting too. He also recommends the app CheckFUS for checking on the update status.
How's that?
Bad, says me. I'm on T Mobile.
Hope it helps,
Reverend Shack

I can't help thinking that the delay may be a clever move by Samsung. Users who have managed to upgrade seem to be generally underwhelmed and the longer that we have to wait the lower our expectations will be. Personally I can see little point in moving from Gingerbread 2.3.5 - I already have face unlock (Visidon applock) and data statistics (My Data Manager) provided by very efficient apps. My internet browser (xScope Pro) is rapid and user friendly. In short, everything works without a hitch. I shall be interested to see the general reaction after the upgrade, but I am not yet convinced that 'upgrade' is the correct term and very much doubt whether it will find its way onto my S2 when it is eventually made available.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 17:24
*** Update on Advice ***
Had a thought - maybe Geek Squad's versions will carry bloatware from the carrier. Maybe we're better off just waiting for our Sim Free version....

Samsung is LYING to the customers instead they should have accepted the mistake by telling the truth. I got my SIM Free in Netherlands and using in UK so I need to wait till all the carries in NL and UK finishes their testing (it applies to whole world), So Ideally SIM Free phones will get the update after all the locked phones in the WORLD. How funny ??
anonymous 5 April, 2012 22:44
Guys, just read the comments of the VP of Samsung of UK and Ireland and judge for yourselves.
It is utterly disgusting to see the way Samsung UK and Ireland is treating information and treating the loyalty of Samsung users, treating them like ignorants and nerds. Denying the S3 release please have a read on it.
The S3 galaxy is the Galaxy Note!
Here is the link.

anonymous 5 April, 2012 22:52
Come on dudes...I can`t believe that guy pictured as the VP Samsung UK and Ireland, is the real VP, it looks to me that someone did a bad joke downloading a picture of the employee of the month in a MacDonald`s and stick it there, but the worst thing are the comments, please serve yourself
It is part of the marketing to try to sell as much notes as they can before the arriving of the real successor of the S2. I firmly believe Samsung knows the note is not a huge success because of the size, so for the time being, they just desperately try to sell the galaxy note.
We know for sure that Samsung lies every time needed, as for the release of the official ics 4.0, due to the 19th of March as stated, but sim free users are still waiting that update for the galaxy s2, with a continous misleading communications or should I say a total lack of them.
So who is going to believe that we need a note in our lives, and so there are no plans of a release of something more sensible like in between of the note and the s2.
If that would be true, then there are a bunch of nerds, which after the release of the s2 I doubt.
Just treating customers like if we were completely retards.
anonymous 5 April, 2012 22:56
Total lack of communication,
This is what is all about, and the way Samsung treat customers who purchased a very expensive sim free branded Samsung in the UK is insulting.
They just don't care about customers on Samsung
This is Sam song lier

In the name of Vader, this is the last time you failed me, I am going to ditch this samsung sucks and go for the one x, as you said s3 is not expected, so what is the wait for? a note
Cut the crap
anonymous 6 April, 2012 06:25
I can wait. This spokesman speaks a very strange language of buzzwords, so much so I thought I was reading a work email. Mostly nonsense and some of it not even correctly used.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 06:33
My bros Indian version got the frekin' update which he bought from Thailand and I didn't in this XEU version even though I paid hell of a lot more. How fair is this? DAMN YOU SAMSUNG
anonymous 6 April, 2012 09:00
Sorry really does seem to be the hardest word for Samsung to say. Their communications mismanagement of this situation is shocking. If we take at face value their explanation for the ICS delay - which is questionable - it doesn't alter how shoddy their public statements have been. They only chose to answer questions on the roll out delay in the first week on the Friday - and that was when a journalist asked them, not any of the actual consumers who'd been looking for an update via their social media.
It wasn't until the following Wednesday that someone in their PR team decided to take a break from plugging new things to buy to actually release the statement online.
And now a statement so half-hearted that it may as well say 'I'm sorry you choose to feel upset by this. Actually, I'm not sorry - why don't you buy the S3?'
Such a shame that Samsung are squandering their reputation this way. Having a great product is pointless when you treat your consumers so poorly -and so publicly.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 14:52
To be honest im not majorly fussed about getting the update, its a good phone without ICS and all most people will do is mess around with the fancy new functions a bit and after a few weeks go back to using the phone how they always did, we are creatures of habit after all.
The problem is the with the way Android is rolled out.... Im not a fanboy but apple does seem to have nailed this.... 'Hey guys, update is out for every compatible device, go have fun'... Granted this isn't so easy with so many handsets out there but Samsung could have done something similar.
People don't mind waiting for a set date if you release it on that date, what they don't like is not knowing what the hell is going on. The update should have been tested by the carriers then released to everyone on the same day when all the builds were ready...
Right, now that ive put my opinions up on the net for no one to take any notice off, im off to carry on with my life...
anonymous 6 April, 2012 19:13
Samsung State
'We don't want to disadvantage anyone, we don't want to say that they have to buy it from anywhere, we want everyone to have the same experience, whether or not it's open-market, network, to us they're exactly the same,'
Also "Simon Stanford, VP of Samsung Telecommunications and Networks for Samsung UK and Ireland, said: 'As an open-market customer you will be on a variety of networks, so it's got to work on whichever network you have chosen."
ALL NETWORKS WORK THE SAME, Just the bloatware network operators install afterwards differ.
Christ what BULL.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 19:25
I agree with the last post anonymous 6 April, 2012 19:13
I have used ODIN to flash my phone and used ICS "I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar" code on Vodafone, O2 and TMobile Sims with no problem. As the last post stated the Mobile Phone/Internet protocols dont change.
I can understand TMobile devices may differ slightly hardware wise which invalidates the comments of testing on TMobile devices for sim free devices.
anonymous 6 April, 2012 22:18
Next stop Google branded phones only when it is guaranteed you will get what you are paying , not corporate bs
anonymous 7 April, 2012 13:24
"treat your consumers so poorly" ???? so DO TELL, exactly HOW many samsung devices do you own, bought when they FIRST came out, NOT years later, when they filtered down to the cheaper shops???
Do you have: TV, landline phone (both fixed and DECT), clock, radio, VCR, digital recorder, notebook, computer, fridge freezer, bluray, DVD, set top box.......
ALL made by samsung??????
If you only have one or two of these you are NOT of any real interest to samsung as a consumer....
what makes samsung interested in you, is if you buy and subscribe to the major companies that use their hardware (and therefore make big money for samsung..)... If you don't worry about the price, just want to PAY for the latest...
That is why 'three' gets it first, financed by the true enthusiasts, that only get a contract with three, because they realize that they then get the latest stuff FIRST...
you need to re-examine the phase 'get what you pay for..'
Find out how much it costs to make a whole mobile network, pay for new transmitters, pay for the staff to go a few thousand feet up a massive tower block, to a small freezing windswept shed, that contains all the electronic gear involved, and try getting it working again.. think of that poor guy trying to get it working, when you curse the company for 'no signal' !!!
anonymous 7 April, 2012 20:47
This is the last Samsung phone I will ever buy...
And it's the fuc... last time I comment on cnet... Damn this utterly useless and retarded captcha...
anonymous 7 April, 2012 23:06
a bit P@*$ off with samsung, i am a sim free user for both S2 and Note and all the excusses from samsung is poor you think they would look after their own 1st it looks like Iphone would have to be my next replacement if they dont pull their finger out of their A$$ @ pronto.
how could you do this to us.
anonymous 8 April, 2012 10:48
all you idiots simply flash your phone with xxlpq, it works perfectly and will be the same when it comes out everything is perfect on it, flash, messaging etc etc, ands battery life is better, flashing with odin is easier than with kies, as long as your model number is gti9100 it will work perfectly. and dont get too excited the phone because of touchwiz does not change much at all.
anonymous 8 April, 2012 13:35
Why should it require testing on all networks first. Data/Voice too and from the device uses industry standard communication protocols and standards. Which network service providers must already have in place or NO phones would work. It's complete rubbish!
I'm actually in shock how fecking stupid this entire upgrade has been handled by Samsung. Their support team from emails to phone calls have just left me disgusted. So much so, that I don't think I'll buy a Samsung device again. Was going to get their Galaxy Note, but feck that. Will go for the Asus eee pad transformer prime.
anonymous 8 April, 2012 17:00
la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la,la,laaaa.... not listening... samsung does not care about you.. goto apple and get the phone *they* say is wonderful... until you realize how much of the phone is fancy design, and how much tech it is missing, compared to almost any other smartphone!!!
dj9928 8 April, 2012 18:15
I think alot are missing the point yes you can flash via odin, but thats not the point, the point is we shouldn't have to.
anonymous 8 April, 2012 22:33
Total lie I am sorry to say. If this were the case every network would have to wait for every other as it is a legal requirement that phones can be unlocked to be used on any network in the UK. So T-Mobile would have to wait for Three in case the buyer decided to unlock their phone. Also there are strict criteria for the radio's and bands etc. used to ensure that all devices can work on each network that manufacturers have to adhere to. The Networks only put their startup logo and bloatware on them. I am very surprised that CNET/ZDNET and others have not picked this up and questioned them on it.
anonymous 9 April, 2012 12:07
Update from T Mobile (I am Sim Free from Carphone but use T Mobile as my carrier, and used my grand a year bill to lever some answers out of them. What a fun 45 mins I sent!). Here's a summary of the salient points...
Overall impression: Not a Cue.
The first chap (a Craig) told me T Mobile hadn't even received the ROM yet. I scoffed for a bit, asked him to check his facts. Nope, we haven't got it. Tired of his rubbish, I asked for his Manager - told 3 times they would say the same thing, and was questioned what it would achieve.
Finally argued enough to get the "team leader" on (note - in my experience, first line support is there to deflect as many calls as possible - don't accept poor service and always ask where the info comes from. Find one bit of fibbery and then go higher, straight away, and don't accept any "my manager will say the same" tosh. 90% of the time they don't say the same thing at all).
"Oh yes, we have it (Aha! So Craig WAS talking nonsense!) but we have to make sure it works on our network first. We have had no communication as to its rollout date. I think it will by the end of the month". I asked where that info had come from - "From hearing general discussions around the office".
Sorry, are T Mobile updating their Tech Support staff with Office Rumours? If so this is THE shoddiest network in the UK!
I asked who is dealing with this? We wait for updates from the Product Support team, they said. Can I speak to them? No, they are not customer facing, they said. I again expressed amazement at how the only dept that knows anything is keeping very, very quiet - and that somehow 3 and other operators have released theirs (note - Craig expressed the viewpoint that 3 don't put much extra software on their phones, and this was the reason for its early release - I read that T Mobile are too busy putting their crap on it and it isn't working right. Upshot - stop tinkering with things that work already.)
I pressed and pressed, but the Team Leader said this was the first call they had had about it that had been escalated. I opinionated that if callers were getting the service I got from Craig then they had probably all slunk off in cloud of useless non-facts feeling none the wiser. The Team Leader didn't comment.
I encourage all T Mobile owners (sim free or not) to ring them and ask what is going on - and when the first line person has no clue, ensure that you speak to a manager. Remember you are a paying customer, point this out if they start telling you that managers will say the same thing, they are busy etc. Dial 150 and you can hold until the cows come home. You're tying up lines which lowers their response rate, which is bad for them. Really, you do have power.
What am I saying? Speak up, peoples! It appears T Mobile Tech Support need a boot up the backside - this may echo through to the Product Support dept if the Tech Support managers are getting it in the ear from us 24/7.
Other than that, vote with your feet and go Sim Free with a 3 contract next time. Tell T Mobile this too. They need to know.
I for one am moving operator as soon as my time comes. 3 seem like sensible folk all of a sudden...
anonymous 9 April, 2012 13:41
Lordy... The above post was me. Thought I'd stick an update up.
Spoke to Samsung. Confirmed the sequence of Vanilla Android from Google given to Samsung, Samsung update the ROM to work on their devices and to add their own software to it - a Samsung Flavoured ROM. This is then given to each operator to adjust the ROM by putting on their software, then test it - a Samsung flavoured ROM with Network Operator flavoured chips in. Operators then tell Samsung it is ok, Samsung release Samsung flavoured ROM to Sim Free users, operators release their flavoured ROMS to their users.
I was told that the ROM had been given to the operators for testing- apparently Samsung can track user issues much more easily if they come through the network rather than Sim Free users - this actually makes sense.
From there on in, it got clearer that that operators were given the ROM to test, but have rolled it out instead. Samsung seem to be happy with this, as they get some decent feedback without all the annoying sulking that they'd get if they dealt with the public direct. Add this to the poor results of the 3 rollout (I take it all back about 3!) and it rings true.
Samsung also said that sim free owners wouldn't have to wait until the likes of Tesco and Virgin catch up - Samsung apparently aren't going to wait for the nod from them (this was because I said I wasn't going to be penalised as a sim free user just because two of the smaller operators didn't give a fig about it (big up to the Agent, he was in Egypt and it isn't easy understanding idioms like that, but he did, and he agreed, then made the aforementioned comment), but users on those networks won't get an update until that network sorts out the ICS update. Virgin and Tesco users beware.
Upshot - seems Samsung are waiting for the initial testing phase by the operators (and operators appear to be testing it on the users themselves (is this a tut tut situation or a point-and-laugh one?) before rolling it out "very soon" (Samsung's words). Which means.. as a sim free user I am not having to deal with all the bugs, and by the wording of the conversation I gleaned that sim free users won't actually be at the back of the queue - 3 and O2 released a version that was intended for testing.
I let Omar go after that. He was helpful and sympathetic - I out-knowledged him a couple of times and once you display you have knowledge, you have power.
Any jobs going at CNET lol??

First of all to everyone that is complaining, get a nexus next time. Always the first with the latest update.
Having said that, I think the Nexus is the perfect example of why their explanation doesn't make sense. At least it is my understanding that they don't test it on all networks before it is released but you definitely get it before branded versions. I specifically bought a sim free version because I read the horrors about people on carriers that were waiting for ages to get their updates. I paid 457 pound for my phone, and now you punish me for skipping the middle man and giving you a higher profit margin? Not only that, you actively promote people to buy via a carrier that will force someone to only use your device on their network taking away a valuable libterty? Not a very customer friendly decision if you ask me.
anonymous 10 April, 2012 21:02
Ive got a factory unlocked s2 and still havent got the ics update..yeah bit annoyed but cant be bothered with custom roms and stuff.. Dont know why everyones bitching gingerbread S2 still better than 4S and as for the one x thats a good phone but rather wait for touchwiz s2 than sense and 4.0...geeks crying over mug unlock jeez
anonymous 11 April, 2012 01:31
Ok, I can't install certain apps now because I don't have ICS! I wasn't bothered about the update up until this point...

So Samsung are in the pockets of the carriers. They don't really need to care about open market customers as the bulk of their sales come through the carriers. So long as they keep them happy by giving them early access to the latest handsets or software updates, that's all they care about.
I bought an open market SGS2 because Samsung seemed to have a good attitude towards updates but I was wrong. I had one of the original Galaxy Tabs and it was one of the most unfinished, shoddy products I have used. A blatant knee jerk reaction to the iPad. I figured the SGS2 was a more polished product and while it's pretty good, it's still just a rushed software stack shoved in some nice hardware.
Samsung really need to create a real identity for their Android products, they need to get their update process sorted and if they want to foster loyalty and trust in their target audience, they need to earn it and then maybe they can own the customer, just have Apple demonstrated.
Samsung's communication of this whole saga has been abysmal.

As an addition to what I said earlier, not only do you now force us to wait untill the slowest carrier will release the update (unnessecarily because the handset will work on any carrier and people who bought it sim free don't want the software the carrier offers anyway) but what happens if one carrier decides not to upgrade (Sony X10 devices on O2 had to wait very long, and though it was released eventually, they still warned the new firmware might make the phone slow while the opposite was proven)? I bought my phone while the promise of ICS was out there and I do want the Chrome for Android as well as the option to use an app called Equiview that allows me to use my phone on a projector and does not work on Gingerbread.
You should have offered the ICS to sim free versions first and perhaps warn that it might not work on every network (which is nonsense if you ask me) or have said that you are waiting for all the carriers to have tested the software and solved any found bugs so you can offer a version that is more stable.

There is NOTHING on my phone that relates to the carrier, so WTF? Has Stanford lost the plot? If I moved to France, Spain or Portugal tomorrow, I could take my phone with me and slot in a new SIM card and it would work, whatever version of Android I'm running, so what's the difference between unlocked and unbranded O2, Orange, Three, T-Mobile or Vodafone handsets, nothing, thats the bloody point!

There are two reasons why I think this is happening to Sim-Free people.First up is Samsung was force by the networks to put the Sim-Free update last. The networks probably said that if you don't put the update last the next time you release a phone we will not stock or have just a limited amount on contract. The second thing is that all of the network paid alot of money to Samsung to be first with the update.I have a unlocked galaxy s2 I bought from day one of launch from Carphone Warehouse. I think all this ics mess will hurt Samsung in the long run.I will never buy any contract phone from any network period.I save a ton of money buying Sim-Free that the networks can't get hold of.The last word I've got to say is that we may be the last people on the planet to get the update but all those with Sim-Free phones are laughing all the way to the bank not the networks.

Firstly to test and build it has to passed to user. So far so good. But is there a time scale you the user acceptance testing? Ad if so an someone at Samsung give us an idea of the time line. A comment of "We're really pushing it hard over the next coming weeks." really is not good enough.
If the test rom is ok to go live with network operators, why not issue that and when all the updates are ready issue another update...
As we all have a Samsung account, why not email us with the details it not like it that difficult to manage or is it?

you're all fools
anonymous 12 April, 2012 16:42
Got my S2 from carphone warehouse and its vodafone contract,i found out today its unbranded so that means we will be the last one who upgrade to ics...Gutted..Samsung has to handle this issue properly..Dissappointed...

Here's an idea. Instead of wasting time crying about this, why don't you get off your asses and LEARN SOMETHING. There's plenty of custom ROMs out there for the sgs2, a lot of which are ICS based. You'll get ICS sooner, have way more features than the stock phone can give, free your phone from bloatware and learn a thing or two and be more security conscious. Its a win-win situation. Worried about losing your files? back them up first. Worried you'll brick the phone/lose warranty? I've performed tons of root/custom ROM flashes and never seen it happen, plus you can always reinstall stock firmware and be covered by warranty. There's nothing stopping you from learning how to root and install custom ROMs and be enjoying ICS now except your own ignorance.

If you follow the Linux kernel and android development lists, you'll realise that the SGS2 2.3.5 code is stacked full of security vulnerability - many over a year old. Most of these bugs are fixed in 4.0.3. By withholding the ICS update, Samsung are putting its users at increasing risk of their phone being hacked and their data stolen. It's about time that Samsung took responsibility for the security of the code that it releases and ensures that all security related updates are released promptly to all users.

PR disaster yes, a major ******, and I hope it will hurt Samsungs sales!
I haven't been checking for an update for a few weeks now (my sim-free, unbranded SGS2 has been turned off, forgotten in a drawer). Today I fired up Kies only to be told there was an update to Kies. Ok, I downloaded it (version 2.3.0.12036_16).
And now it refuses to recognize my SGS2!
LOL, turned off the SGS2 again, and threw it back into the drawer!
End of story!

not sure if its been said here but ics for s2 version i9100p has not been released yet im waiting for it with a branded o2
anonymous 16 April, 2012 08:57
I think Samsung has very poor Software Quality Assurance team and Samsung can't reply on them. Thats why Samsung wants other operators (like O2, 3 etc) to provide feedback after testing ICS, so that they can release for SIM free users. Really very poor and bad Software Quality Assurance and Marketing by Samsung this time..

enough decided to go for HTC one

Have spoken with Carphonewarehouse and Samsung today... and O2.
My CPW-coded firmware means that O2 say that their network is not responsible for pushing through the firmware updates for ICS, etc.
Turns out though, that Carephone warehouse shipped me a sim-free SGS2, with an O2 sim; rather than a locked-O2 phone. They said it was their mistake, but that I should see it as a bonus I haven't got a locked phone and therefore would find it easier to sell on... !!!!
Anyway, they confirmed, that I will be able to upgrade to ICS within the next two weeks, as Samsung would have, by then, released the firmware update to all sim-free / unlocked phones.
anonymous 16 April, 2012 15:58
"It's got to work on any network" makes absolutely no sense. The networks customise the vanilla release to add their bloatware. It seems to me that the networks have offered Samsung some sort of inducement to discourage people from opting out of their overpriced 'feee phone' plans.
anonymous 17 April, 2012 10:13
Looks like it may be released (i havent confirmed this yet) but according to @SGS2 Update Checker (follow on twitter) - the unbranded UK/Ireland firmware has just been released
anonymous 17 April, 2012 10:31
Yes, it has been released. Just got the ICS update to my sim free S2 via kies. At last Samsung...
anonymous 17 April, 2012 13:17
Can anyone confirm the ICS update for sim free S2 in UK?
anonymous 17 April, 2012 16:18
yep done at about 2pm today
anonymous 18 April, 2012 14:45
I got mine update on my unbranded sim-only phone yesterday. I was not in a hurry for it, why the hurry guys, you will get your eventually. Stop crying and get a life.
anonymous 20 April, 2012 12:09
In Ukraine, it's still 2.3.4 (SEK), not even 2.3.5 or 2.3.6... If only I had known about this update policy prior to buying SGSII, the choice would have been different...
anonymous 21 April, 2012 12:32
Update has now become available for my sim-free SGS2 but having done a lot of reading on the subject I will not load ICS on my phone.
anonymous 8 May, 2012 08:29
It's because Samsung spent time on SGS3.
You should not buy SGS3 and let Samsung understand that customer satisfaction is above all.
anonymous 1 June, 2012 14:47
Bought Note from Carphonewarehouse. Gingerbread CPW firmware. with a few updates loaded. Purchased a few days after release. Got ICS 4.0.3 OTA update today.
anonymous 19 June, 2012 08:36
I made the conscious decision that I would buy sim free this time after ALL the hassle with ThreeUK and HTC in the upgrade of the Android OS.
Now Samsung have missed an EASY beta test (Roll it out to non-branded, sim free models and listen to any error messages from uses on the multiple networks) and confused the hell out of me.
