BlackBerry X10 and Z10 are first BlackBerry 10 phones

BlackBerry 10 is just two weeks away -- and it's time for the best look yet at the X10 and Z10, the next generation of BlackBerry phones.

BlackBerry-builder Research in Motion is launching two new phones, the X10 and Z10, to show off the new software. Leaked shots show how BlackBerry 10 works with both keyboard and touchscreen.

The first phone is the X10, pictured above, previously known as the BlackBerry Nevada or N series. The X10 sports a traditional BlackBerry Qwerty keyboard for die-hards who just can't quit the clicky keys. But the X10 ditches the trackpad and soft keys that nestle above the keyboard on previous phones, making more room for what looks like the biggest screen yet to grace a Qwerty BlackBerry.

Posted on fan forum CrackBerry, the photos may not show the finished device -- slightly different models have been issued to developers to get their apps ready for BlackBerry 10 -- but give a clear indication of RIM's desire to match the venerable physical keyboard with the versatility of a decent-sized touchscreen.

Meanwhile Austrian site Telekom-presse claims a review of the Z10, previously known as the BlackBerry London or L series. It's the fully touchscreen-focused phone of the pair, with a 4.2-inch 1,280x768-pixel screen.

Inside is a dual-core 1.5GHz OMAP 4470 processor, with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It takes a microSIM card and a microSD card. The 8-megapixel camera is reported to be pretty decent -- which could be a first for a BlackBerry.

BlackBerry 10 and the two new phones will be unveiled on 30 January, with at least six new phones coming this year. Do you think BB10 can save RIM's skin? Can the X10 and Z10 tempt you away from Android? Touchtype your thoughts in the comments or on our touchy-feely Facebook page.

Decent camera? It blows away every camera that exists on a phone today. "Will it tempt you away from Android?" This phone will have many throwing Androids & i-phones in the garbage or at least taking them back to Fisher Price.

Lol.
Yeha I think RIM have done a lot of damage. They may take 3rd place from Microsoft but that's the best they can hope for really. Living in London the only people I really see with BlackBerry's now are 10-15 yr olds.
Android is a cut above the rest and Apple has a very dedicated following.

BlackBerry's are Sh*t. I know lots of people with a wide range of BB's, and they just aren't capable as Android phones and iPhones. Plus, they are very buggy and build quality is poor...I can watch Hollyoaks and EastEnders and download cool apps on my phone, whereas people with BB's are probably on the phone to Canada waiting for RIMs repair center in Germany to fix their phone for the 6th time.

The only reason why people still use. BlackBerrys is because of BBM, and even that is being challenged by Whatsapp and Tango.

The wannabe tech article isn't referring to existing Blackberrys, its talking about BB10, of you had been following the developement of BB10 you would know that ios, Windows & spamdroid are quaking in there shoes beacause they know they will actually have to innovate to catch up to BB10 & they can no longer call a larger screen or an extra core "innovation"

A mates girlfriend works in marketing for RIM and had the Z10 with her in the pub at the weekend

It does look nice and well built, but the OS isn't something that's going to change the game, we all tried the phone and noone was particularly bothered (mixture of IOS, Win and Android owners)

Its not going to gain them much market share IMO. Theres just not enough reason to move to BB if you own a phone running on one of the big 3

First of all congratulations for once again finishing an article about Blackberry with the "Can RIM survive?" question. Awesome reporting *sigh*.

Secondly, RIM have not said there will be 6 new BB10 "phones" they said there will be 6 new "devices" running BB10. If you'd done even a little research you'd have dug up a leaked road map which touted a 10 inch tablet running BB10.

Lastly, I love my current BB but I am yet to be convinced about BB10. My biggest issue is apps, RIM are waaay behind on this and to be frank most of the "apps" they currently have are poorly designed or are simply web launchers. I'm in a holding pattern, waiting to see what BB10 canreally do. If it fails I suspect I'll migrate to Android.

I like blackberrys and can see the appeal. If the OS is up to scratch and the price is right i could see RIM at least surviving

Meh. Those Z10 specs are either mid range or last generation. The price had better reflect those specs or BB will be laughed out or the smartphone race.

I think bb10 is going to make a massive difference i have literally been waiting for it for months as my currently blackberry curve is finally going out the door after 2 or so years, i think previous blackberry's are going to be a much unwanted product after this comes out as they wont be compatible with any of the 30,000+ new apps or features of the new phone such as the bbm facetime equivalent(a great idea), the os looks smooth which is great because my curve can barely send a text without freezing anymore, the specs are enough to ensure the os runs great but isnt overpowered which should hopefully be reflected in the price

I'm optimistic about RIM and the BlackBerry. RIM has got tens of millions of subscribers to its messaging services that are clearly waiting for new BlackBerrys to be released (though it would be interesting to know how many of them are on 24 months contracts, so can't unsubscribe).

However, RIMs got to avoid the mistakes of Nokia and not make its products exclusive to one network and price it high SIM free.

I'll 2nd what captainPicard said and I'm pretty interested in this. They plan to have 90% of the major apps on release day. I've got my nexus 4 but I will make the effort to find somewhere to play with one. Also I hope they don't just leave it to the operator stores to sell them. Do what Samsung did and open temp stores at key locations e.g. Across from the apple store, so people can play with the phones and not just the plastic clone which you get in phone shops.

I agree with the person impersonating Damien, RIM needs to improve build quality of its devices, I use to have a BB and switching to Android was the best decision I ever made. Nevertheless, they need to offer something magical for me to even consider buying another BlackBerry again.

Why did apple succeed. Because Mr. Steeve the master jobs had a vision.
When he came out with IPHONE. He changed the game but from the time it
started what have they added more. Siri + Ratina Display + Little
this + Little that. If you call this innovation its pretty good.
Android is very vulnerable. Basically you give your life to
google all your contacts your phone records the places where
you go they all share it with advertisers. Blackberry gives
you security. It may not be that important to you wait one day
a big virus hits Android & people will think what happened.
Mcafee showed in a demo a virus which made samsung galaxy to restart over and
over and it crashed the phone please google it. BBM with
video + Time shift camera + 100000 apps to start with, most secure platform + Different Profiles.
There is inovation in every part. RIM has done their home work & i wish them best of luck.

The only reason I lived the Bold series is the look and the amazing keyboard. The new X10 looks TERRIBLE, what a ugly phone :/ I wanted to get 9790 but wanted to see what the new bold would offer, very disappointed, looks like a brick with buttons :(

Blackberry's are popular for 3 reasons; they're cheap, they have a keyboard and they have this whole work email thing.

Corporations like them because they're cheap and they're great for writing emails and receiving emails; they don't care about the apps, browsing or anything else.

I don't see them ever taking any customers away from Android by being nearly as good.

I've had an iPhone and it was awful ! I've had 2 top of the range android phones and they were mediocre. Now loving my (never thought I'd say it) Nokia windows phone . I've found most iPhone and android users are sheep and they jump down the throats of any challengers without even looking at the phone . I'm so pleased I moved to windows. I'd never rule out a blackberry and will have a good look next time I need a phone .

I think this new blackberry will capture a strong market share. I had an experience with those all 4 platforms; i love iphone's smoothness and stability, android for its flexibility and plethora device choices, windows phone for its most stability among the rest i think, with the worst of all is that old blackberry i always loathe. But one common thing i hate about them all is their development frameworks and tools. You have to use mac to develop for apple, android is overly complicated to just build a simple app and it uses java and fragmented os, windows for....not sure, haven't tried :p
But if you've ever tried developing for the new bb, it's so much better than the rest with its c++/qml although their stupid decision to use momentics IDE. If you look previous smartphone success, it's strongly correlate to the available (not necessarily quality) apps. If more developers are switching to exclusively write for blackberry, i'm sure it'll also drive the users decisions to switch to bb.

hmm, if you want to see more about blackberry 10. you can see this from crackberry.com or blackberryempire.com or my blog bb10believe.blogspot.com

if someone said that BB10 is just like android, I think and I do believe it was truly wrong opinion.and I believe someone who says such that does not get enough experience with BB10.

I have used an iPhone 4 and have friends with Android phones. I have tried Windows phone 8 in-store. Now using BlackBerry Bold 9900. Of all the above phones, the BlackBerry is the best for me. I can modify it to my taste, use all social networking sites easily, e-mail (BlackBerry's backbone) is far easier than with all others I've tried, especially iPhone. I can do so much more with it than just play games. Now with the Z10 or X10, even gamers will be happy with the First-person shooter games available. Beyond smartphones and tablets, there is QNX, a company RIM bought. QNX is in many devices and systems and is extremely valuable to RIM's future.

So Mister Matt Winston now that the new blackberry has an android player and a time shift camera and the fastest Web browser on a phone today they can set up a personal and business section on the phone and compatability with up to a 64 GB micro sd and the best virtual keyboard and text prediction is that magical enough for you
