BBC Sports app kicks off on Android

The BBC Sport app has kicked off on Android. You can get your sporting fix on the go on your Samsung Galaxy S3, Google Nexus 4 or an Android tablet up measuring up to the 7-inch size of the Google Nexus 7.

The app pipes the latest sporting news and videos into any Android device up to 7 inches, including phone, tablets, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in-between.

The app opens with a home screen displaying the latest headlines, with separate home pages for Formula 1, cricket, rugby union and rugby league, tennis, golf, football and individual football teams. Results and stats are added live, as well as text commentaries.

The iPhone version of the app came out last month. Android is often second to get big-name apps, an issue that developers blame on Android's complexity compared to Apple's simpler iOS platform -- where there's basically one iPhone and two iPads, Android has a wealth of phones and tablets to account for, coming in all different shapes and sizes and specs.

Still, waiting for an Android app is especially galling when it's an app that we've already paid for as part of another service, like the BBC and Sky. Just last month Android-toting Sky Sports customers were angry to miss out on new features.

BBC Sport app is on Google Play right now. You'll need Android version 2.2 or higher to download it.

How do you get your sporting fix on the go? Is Android always behind? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Pathetic
Can't even get live any BBC on Samsungs Flagship Tablets, Galaxy tab 2 10.1 or Note 2.

Sky are just as bad, Sky go doesn't work either.

Yet 3rd party apps can run

About time. Any news on the iPlayer radio app that has been 'on the way' since the iOS version was launched back in October last year. As for the ability to download TV programmes on iPlayer, well I'll believe that when I see it.

Getting fed up of the BBC treating android users like 2nd class citizens. Last time I checked, my licence fee was the same as an iPhone user's.

Really nice app actually, well thought out, intuitive, simple UI. I like it a lot.

Due to the content it's probably UK only. Don't know though.

Don't single out the BBC for slow Android development. Most companies are the same. Going for brand appeasement rather than looking at the largest market. It's not good enough, but Sky, ITV, Channel 4, BBC, etc. are all at it.

In technology its every time about who is first.so BBC has launched BBC sports app which is compatible with higher android versions(2.2) ,that is a bit disappointing nevertheless congrats to BBC on behalf of FITTODO.

Yeah, I know most companies are the same (trust me, I wasnt pleased when updating to 4.2.2 meant that my sky go app stopped working on my nexus 4 whilst the same app seemed to cope when I upgraded to iOS 6.1). It's just that the BBC doesn't have the excuse of needing brand recognition or the fact that iOS users are more likely to pay for an app - it's meant to be a public service broadcaster which as far as I'm concerned means it has a duty to reach the largest proportion of the public that it can. And that means android is the most logical choice.

I suppose I'm just disappointed. I'm a massive supporter of the BBC and consume a lot of its content across a lot its outlets and I expected it to be better than its commercial rivals.
