The iPhone 4S is exactly what it sounds like -- a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4 with a beefed-up processor and a spangly new camera. We were disappointed with the lack of a new design, especially as the smart phone competition is hotter than ever. Let's see how Apple's new gadget compares to its greatest rival.
The Samsung Galaxy S2 is one of the finest blowers ever crafted by human hands (assuming that it was crafted by humans, and not sent down by a hyper-advanced race of alien technophiles), and blew our socks clean off our feet when we gave it the review treatment.
So which is better? Let's get these phones oiled up and into the wrestling ring.
Design
The Galaxy S2 is a hot slab of tech and no mistake. It measures an atom-slicing 8.49mm thick and it weighs just 116g, which -- when you consider all the gadgetry packed inside its shell -- is completely baffling, but very impressive.
The chassis itself looks the business too. It's a glossy black rectangle like all other smart phones, but the back has a textured finish, and an indent that makes it feel very slim in your hand.
Our only complaint (and it's a complaint we've heard from others) is that the plastic casing feels a bit... plasticky. We suspect that's an unfortunate by-product of making the S2 so light, but nevertheless this oil-based blower doesn't feel as luxurious to hold as some metal mobiles.
That's not a complaint you could level at the iPhone 4S however, whose heavenly glass front and back are complemented by a ludicrously classy metal frame around the edges. It's not as thin as the Galaxy S2, measuring 9.3mm, but it's still a very slim phone, so we'll let that millimetre slide. It's a shade heavier too at 140g, but we think it's worth it for the cold, industrial metal styling.
In previous head-to-head comparisons, despite being the best-looking phone around, the iPhone 4 never won in the design stakes because of its enormous flaw -- the fact that the iPhone 4 drops signal like a pirate dropping anchor if you hold it in your hands, due to a rubbish antenna.
Apple is confident it's fixed the antenna issues with the iPhone 4S -- there's a new wireless system that enables the phone to switch between two different antennas to improve call quality, and makes the 4S capable of faster downloads.
So has Apple fixed the antenna issues? We can't know for sure until we give the iPhone 4S the review treatment. So this one is a tie for now.
Design winner: Draw
Camera
The Galaxy S2 packs a great camera, and in our review we were impressed by the high quality images it was able to snap, as well as with the actual camera software itself, which is jam-packed with scene modes and such.
The sensor itself is an 8-megapixel job, capable of capturing 1080p video footage. Impressive stuff indeed.
The iPhone 4 had a mere 5-megapixel camera, but the 4S ups those stakes with an 8-megapixel snapper, also capable of snagging 1080p video footage.
Despite its lower resolution, the iPhone 4 takes incredibly sharp and colourful photos, and Apple has gone nuts with the tinkering this time around, packing a CMOS sensor, face detection, backside illumination (giggle) and improved white balance. The actual process of taking a photo looks to be pacy too -- Apple reckons taking shots takes 1.1 seconds, with the second photo following just 0.5 seconds later.
While the S2 has a great camera, the iPhone 4S looks to make the best even better, and with the camera software being deliciously simple to use, we reckon the iPhone 4S will edge the S2 when it comes to the fine art of taking photos. But we haven't tested it yet, so for now we're cautiously calling it a draw.
Camera winner: Draw
Software
Forget boring hardware -- software is the category that separates the legends from the amateurs. Just look at phones like the Nokia N8, which was a hardware powerhouse, but tragically let down by its annoying, unintuitive operating system.
The Galaxy S2 is running Android, Google's mobile operating system. Android is amazing, putting an astonishing amount of power in the hand of the user, letting you tinker remorselessly with your gadgets until they can fill out your tax return, walk your dog and make popcorn. Or they might just break.
Android's not perfect though. It feels quite geeky, and you'll find yourself getting lost within complicated menu systems. Widgets can complicate or overwhelm your home screen, and the app offering is quite poor because there's no approval process. As a result the Android Market is rammed with rubbish apps, and it can be hard to find the few that are worth bothering with.
We think that unless you're the kind of person who loves getting a bit mad scientist on your kit, you'll probably prefer Apple's iOS 5. It's incredibly simple to use, with apps arranged in grids of 12 across multiple screens, and navigating through the phone's menus is blissfully easy.
There are some decent additions in this version of iOS too, such as a better notifications system and iMessage, a free messaging app for Apple users.
Apple may throw down some mean restrictions when it comes to apps, but the flipside of that is that the App Store for iOS devices is filled with much better bits of software, and it's easy to find cool new games and tools too, thanks to the App Store's pleasing layout.
That's not all though -- the iPhone 4S has a secret weapon, in the form of Siri.
Siri is a voice control feature that lets you bark instructions at your mobile. Everything we've seen of Siri so far has been impressive, with the AI assistant appearing to be quite sophisticated. If you ask it, "What's £50 in dollars?" for example, it'll do the conversion for you, and display a helpful tile of information.
Android has its own voice-control apps, but so far no company has ever given us the kind of sci-fi voice control over our tech we dream of. If Apple can take us there, we'll be happier than a dog with two sausages.
Software winner: iPhone 4S
Screen
Deciding which of these two mobiles packs a better screen is really tough, because they're both incredibly good, but in different respects. The Galaxy S2's 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display is one of the brightest things we've ever seen, and will fire colours into your eyes like a Sherman tank loaded with paint.
That might not sound pleasant, but it is. We could stare at this massive screen all day, watching adoringly as our retinas sizzle away to nothing. Photos and hi-def movies look ace on this display, and possessing it will make you look just as glorious by proxy. Probably.
The iPhone 4S may have a considerably smaller 3.5-inch screen, but Apple's signature retina display boasts an astonishingly high resolution. While the S2 manages with a 480x800-pixel resolution, the iPhone 4 squeezes a stonking 640x960 pixels on to its smaller panel, making everything on-screen look razor sharp. Even if you squint, you'll be hard pressed to see the individual pixels here. Glorious.
But it's the same screen you'll find on the iPhone 4, and we were hoping for something a little bigger from Apple this time around. For that reason, we're throwing this one Samsung's way.
Screen winner: Samsung Galaxy S2
Conclusion
Alright, time to call a winner -- when we compared the iPhone 4 to the Samsung Galaxy S2, we found them to be equally desirable, with no clear winner. But with an ungraded processor, better camera and some new software, the iPhone 4S just edges it.
Winner: Apple iPhone 4S. But...
We reckon that for most people, the iPhone 4S is the better mobile. But Apple and Android fans alike should know that we're expecting Samsung to launch a brand-new mobile called the Nexus Prime in the very near future, which is rumoured to pack a 4.6-inch screen and an iPhone-trouncing display resolution of 720x1,184 pixels.
Moreover, the Nexus Prime will be the next Android flagship mobile, and is expected to come running Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android. So while Apple is on top for now, the fact that the iPhone 4S is a relatively minor upgrade means it could be overthrown before long. Stay tuned, gadgeteers.

Um how did the iPhone win? By my count it was 2 x Draw and 1 win a piece? Doesn't that equal an overall draw??
anonymous 6 October, 2011 14:06
it was on goal difference!
anonymous 6 October, 2011 14:26
Galaxy s2...

How did the iPhone win?
jax75 6 October, 2011 14:32
I agree with the first comment, and now I see the favouritism that everyone's been talking about. I dont see how apple upgrading to the same specs as the sgs2 means that its better? Normally you'd argue that flash and the amazing media playback on the galaxy s 2 would make it better, not just because they've added a voice control which is ridiculous to use as well as ios doing exactly what theyve been accusing all of the android tech of, stealing ideas, notification panel? ability to check texts from lock screen? wireless syncing? next they'll tell us they invented that too like they did with video calling, facetime's joke to be honest. As a fan of cnet i'm tired of everything being compared to the apple technology especially when its all over priced low-mid range tech. you made the iphone 4 win over the sgs2, and there were no real arguments for that either. go sell outs.... woo
anonymous 6 October, 2011 14:39
lol how'd the iPhone win :S
S2 Bigger storage, slimmer, features All share, can work any type of video file (drag drop ur video files from ur pc into the phone) no time consuming conversions needed, not limited to a software (iTunes), works as AP hub, and I can come up with more...
Jono70 6 October, 2011 14:53
...not to mention comparing features on a phone you've not even tested yet... right...
Mark Anderson 6 October, 2011 14:59
LOL! Engadget did this properly and the iPhone 4S got absolutely caned by the SGS II. I'm not even a fan of Android but your bias is showing a bit here. No wonder no-one takes CNET seriously anymore!
Face it, the iPhone 4S is a dollar short and a day late.
Peter Hudson 6 October, 2011 15:04
Gotta agree here, they were both a draw by your own catagories CNET, but factoring in the fact that the galaxy S2 is an older phone and it still stands up to the brand new iPhone, I think the samsung should get it
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:10
It looks like the result was written first - to make iPhone 4S win and other sections suitably adjusted!! Why there is no comparison on connectivity options, DLNA, Wi-Fi direct, etc... no comparison on productivity Kies Air vs manual itunes synching, etc
Even when Nexus Prime delivers the knocking punch next week, articles like this will still keep saying as a underwhelmed 4S as being the winner!!!!
Personally, i feel that Nexus Prime can't be beaten until may be, iPhone7!!!
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:11
Well to be honest Apple were the first company to create a smartphone therefore samsungs ideas are all built around Apples vision. Even the colours samsung stole black and White come on they could've made a slight difference!!
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:12
i said it before and i'll say it again. don't need bigger screens. 3.5" is the perfect size. Might as well carry a brick in your pocket...
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:13
or you could just attach it to your tummy like a teletubby. lol.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:15
The samsung galaxy S2 is a very high tech phone packed with some impressive stuff but the iphone 4S looks much nicer and feels more premium in hand and it will be even more nicer when a jailbreak is relased for it! and when a new iphone is released i see crowds of excited people queing outside the apple store waiting 2 get thier New gadget but i dont see many crowds outside the samsung store lol but overall i would call it a draw..
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:42
Android is a terrible OS. When reviews say "it might seem a little geeky" and "difficult to navigate" please read "totally and utterly, mind-numbingly, enragingly, awful".
I hate my HTC Desire. Seriously. I have loathed it for 18 months.
Thank god for the iPhone 4S. Friday, here I come.

@ anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:11
actually apple weren't the first at al...smartphones have been around far longer....are we forgetting the older windows mobile platform, symbian, blackberry as well...
and apple weren't the first to do the touchscreen either before its mentioned...albeit, I will agree that apple did put everything together in a neat little package that made it so usable to the common consumer though, I do commend them for that, because without the original iphone, the rest like HTC, Samsung...windows phone 7, android...all of it, would never have pulled its socks up and got down to making better tech..
I mean at the time the Nokia N95 was probably king of the smart phones...yet the damn thing was plagued with more bugs than anything...the point being, tech has far improved, an while everyone can cry "samsung stole this, htc stole that, apple just steal everything..blah blah.."...you still have to give apple their credit, that without them we wouldn't have a much better choice as well as the fact that smartphones are more user friendly across the market now.
oh and im not a apple fanboy, I'm an Android fan....love my little HTC Desire...does everything I need and more :D

@6 October, 2011 15:42: Weird, my son of 3 has worked out how to unlock my s2, find his drawing applications / games and then load them and successfully play with them.
He is either genius, whom I can retire early on from his brain skills or you sir, do not know how to use something that does not spoon feed you.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 15:55
@ proud father of boy aged 3.
Why on earth would I not want to be spoon fed by technology? No, you're right, I enjoy using the less intuitive UI - makes me feel like I've earned it.
By "games", I assume you're referring to the detrius that populates the Android app store? Mmmm... enjoy all that, won't you.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:05
@6 October, 2011 15:55
By "less intuitive UI" you mean "Swipe left or right, touch icon to load application" ... sounds similar to another OS to me? Not sure what part of Android is less intuitive? You want to go back, you press the back button. You want to go home, you press the home button. You want a menu ... guess which button you press?
And by Games, I meant Angry Birds. You may have heard of it.
But I do agree, there is a heap load of rubbish released into the Market .. but that's the price you pay for not living in a totalitarian regime.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:17
@ 6 October, 2011 16:05
Fascinating. What, pray, has scuppered what must be a blooming potential career for you as a technology journalist? Is it, perhaps, that you conclude : (a) that the Android interface is as user-friendly as the iOS interface; or (b) that you believe that a mass of cr*p has some kind of merit just because no-one is censoring said cr*p?
No need to polish up the CV - the job offers will be raining in.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:26
@6 October, 2011 16:17
So enlighten us all with nicely written argument on why iOS is so much more user friendly than Android .. as so far, all you have done is allude to it, while not actually given any reason or fact on why Android is so bad.
Also, I'm not quite sure where I said the "mass of cr*p", as you so eloquently put it, has merit? Surely I agreed with you and simply stated that is the price that you pay for a little more freedom?
Man, you Apple fans are so touchy today ...
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:34
@6 October, 2011 16:26
In relation to your first point. Read a review. Perhaps your son could read it to you - he sounds like a bright little chap. Or, perhaps you might go so far as to do yourself the ultimate favour and go out and buy yourself a nice new iPhone instead and see for yourself.
In relation to your second point, the "merit" I spoke of related to the so-called freedom you enjoy from the "totalitarian regime". I don't think anyone would argue with your statement that all the apps are, in fact, a "heap load of rubbish", as you so eloquently put it.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:40
So sad when you have people like this who are blinded by the brand name. So the iOS platform is better than Android? How exactly? Ever since I first used an Android I never got "lost" in the menu. I admit its not as easy as iOS for the first few days but after you get used to it you realise its way easier than iOS. Grid menu.. easy.. Its BORING. How sad is it when you have over 4 generations of phones based on the same grid icon menu design? With Android you can change almost everything to the way you want it. Talk about easy.. Before Siri, Google Voice let me go to a specific app (e.g. email) then write an email entirely through voice recognition. Also you can hold down the home key and the last 6 apps you ran will show up where you can easily switch through apps unlike pressing the iPhones magic button and going through another grid session. The rest of the features that comes with an Android phone are being discussed by other people so ill leave this here. In terms of an OS, Android is the clear winner, and the only reason why iOS runs smoother is because the interface is very basic. Run a live wallpaper on an iPhone then see how smooth it is. Oh I forgot- you cant lol
Jono70 6 October, 2011 16:43
Anonymous x2 - think you should both get a room xx
Mark Anderson called it right - "Engadget did this PROPERLY"
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:46
@6 October, 2011 16:34
I think generalising and saying "all" applications in the market are rubbish is exactly that; a generalisation based on your clouded opinion on a phone you clearly had difficulty in using. Also, I have read a review, this very article in fact, which is what started this whole conversation in the first place.
But it's okay, you seem to be happy using your sub standard, less powerful phone and I'm happy using my power house, technologically more advanced phone. So lets just agree to disagree.
Finally to go back to your initial idea of tidying up my CV. That's not a bad idea ...
... I hear that there are some Jobs going at Apple.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 16:46
I am not blinded by the brand name. I own two Android phones, a Blackerry and an iPhone. The iPhone is the most intuitive to use and the most pleasurable to use.
I appreciate your opinion though, fair play to you. If we were all the same then life would be boring. I was being deliberately inflammatory to the other poster because I suspect he is a tool.
AppleGuy81 6 October, 2011 16:57
Whats that coming over the hill?
It's Samsung Fanboys... It's Samsung Fanboys!
jamesfed 6 October, 2011 17:40
I'm sorry CNET but after the rubbish that you keep throwing at Windows Phone 7 and with this latest news article which just doesn’t make sense I will be converting over to The Register.
Words of advice - WAIT until you can create a complete and total review before publishing something which is under baked and has only annoyed 95% of the readers of this article (shown in the comments).
I'm a Windows Phone fan boy through and through but at least cut down on this bias towards Apple and the poor journalism that follows.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 18:15
U missed some things !!!!!!!!!!
A5 kicks galaxy's exynos into the water in graphics by like two times better performance.
and website loading may have like one or 2 seconds differences and some websites load on iphone faster while some on galaxy.
Another thing which was missed is battery life , iPhone 4 had so much superior battery life comparing s1 or s2 so 4S definitely getting number in battery department
Third thing is , Reliability Samsung always releases late updates so hard to update android devices , but updates from iOS come really good and simple
Xylon123 6 October, 2011 18:15
@AppleGuy81 You say about Samsung Fanboys, yet you yourself have the name "AppleGuy81". If that isn't fanboyism I'll eat my SGS2. Also, it's less about being fans and more support for open-source, good-quality software and hardware that's streets ahead. Android is about the user experience. Apple's iOS is about making money, simple as that.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 18:32
Should have just posted a disclaimer saying this was a comparison based on specs
anonymous 6 October, 2011 18:46
You forgot the most important criteria, that are the price, flexibility., and openness. Wait until people put the two in a one to one test of browsing speed just to make sure that Iphone 4s is worth the money.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 19:02
i do love the new iphone but it looks same as the samsung galaxy S2 ........new iphone seems to be copied from samsung galaxy s2 model.........
anonymous 6 October, 2011 19:30
I am not what you would call tech expert on how a particular piece of equipment be it a computer, smartphone or other electronic devices inner workings. If I had to choose between the iphones or the android based phones it would have to meet certain requirements. My main concern is what that particular device can do for my business and how well it interfaces with the software I use to run my contracting business which does include dispatching workers via their cells from the office computer and giving them the capability to respond on where and what they are doing, write up and email the customer an estimate and/or invoices and process payments all through their phone. The software we get from our distributors also have certain requirements to be able to pull them up. All the apps from apple have to be down loaded via itunes and apple so far has yet to have a decent app to run the sofeware programs my business uses. Keep in mind all the software programs we use are all 2011 current programs but work best on microsoft computers. We even tried running them on the ipad2 (had to go through itunes) and we can not even get up a simple pricing page to load. Workers currently use laptops that work but are bulky so we tried the ipad and they failed miserably. Now all our employee phones were up for renewal through sprint and we delayed to find out more about the iphone4s to compare to the new galaxy s2 with expandable memory. I felt bad for the salesman. He was very patient with us and went through step by step all the things we need in a smartphone with the importance of interfacing our dispatching software to which that company did say it will run on any smartphone to a certain degree. That company was the one who also told us they ran their own tests of compatibility on function, storage, speed and software on all smartphones. They had to in case a new version to correct any problems had to be done. When asked which phone both the software company and the salesman at sprint suggested would work the best for us? They both agreed the best fit for our company would be to get the Samsung Galaxy S2. It has the capability to download our dispatch software without effecting the speed or storage on the phone, easy to use and the USB allows me to sync their phones to the main computer to back up their devices and to update their phones with any changes made in the dispatch software. They can also do it from their phone but I rather back it up on the main as that computer has off site backup to a secure site. We also love that we can add a 32GB microSD card to store all pictures and data that can also be removed and downloaded to the main computer so it does not use up the phone's storage which I can not see ever doing so but nice to know it has that ability and supposedly it has more then the iphone 4s does. We are now proud owners of 25 samsung galaxy s2 phones and they have been working beautifully with no problems with any of our software and the employees love them as well. We give them shared minutes and unlimited web access and messaging and if they wanted they can put their own sd card in for personal photos and use our sd for business photos and the employees were very grateful and even the most techno challenged person had no problem working it. Also had lots of trouble converting simple and some more graph oriented files from microsoft excell to the ipad. Knowing what we went through to find compatible apps on the ipad and still lack the ability to run most of our software and microsoft programs on them, we were not about to go through the headaches of getting it all to work on the iphone. We don't use it for games or as an MP3 music/video player so I can not do a comparison on those issues. For business' that use software to dispatch field employees or sales people to make a presentation of your products (usb on phone connects to our projectors or a customer's TV I would recommend the Galaxy over the iphone. If all you want to do is play with your phone with movies, games, music and basic business apps then pick the Iphone. For us there is no comparison. The Galaxy S2 wins by far. The camera also takes great pictures with zoom, face detection, scene modes, macro, manual or auto focus and flash, timer, effects resolution white balance metering anti shake etc i can go on. It is almost like having an 8 megapixel instant camera - more camera features then the average person uses. If you need to take high quality pictures then you should not be using your phone and instead use an slr camera that changes lenses etc. Having a camera phone is just an extra feature that no one should be basing their phone needs on when comparing which phone to purchase anyway. I have alot of apps on my phone and it has not slowed my android down nor has it affected the battery life either. It also has the capability of being used as a internet hub that other devices that have wifi can use it to gain internet access. it is recommended to have it plugged in as it will use up the battery faster then normal. Again for us the Samsung Galaxy S2 was by far the best choice for us. The iphone will have its followers but maybe they need to now look a little closer at what phone offers what now just because it holds the name Iphone does not mean it going to be the best. Maybe in its earlier days of when the smartphone first emerged but to be honest I think it is slipping which is evident in the 4S using old technology and passing it off as something new and innovative when other phones already had the features they just put out there on the 4s.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 19:51
People think that a bigger screen and thinner phone is better but these things ruin the size of the phone if the screen is too big then it will get to the moment when it wont fit in your pocket. And if the phone is too thin it won't feel right in your hand and won't be comfortable to use. I think Apple has the write size for a phone and the reason is if they increased the amount of pixels on the screen it would be pointless because the human eye would not be able to notice a difference in the screen so the iPhone 4S should have won that one.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 19:57
I used to be SO much of an apple fanboy but the 4S is what really made me realize apple is going down hill without Steve Jobs (RIP) and it is not gonna get any better from here. Also, the Galaxy S2 completely smashes the 4S in every field...... shame on you Cnet, unquestionable and predictable bias here!
anonymous 6 October, 2011 20:19
Seriously? We're talking about phones! Calm down people. Android or Apple, either way it comes down to personal preference. There's pros and cons to both.
anonymous 6 October, 2011 21:12
if itunes didnt try to screw us in the beginning i might have bought the 4s, prefer to choose what i play my shit on
anonymous 6 October, 2011 21:19
Makes me laugh that people slag each other off regarding what brand of phone they use , after all it's not as if anyone on here has invented anything like either Android or Apple so just play with whatever phone you are happy with as it was your choice wasn't it ?

anonymous 6 October, 2011 23:53
Siri is how it wins hands down. Now you dont have to look at the screen for most things. A huge advantage. By the time PC makers catch up with integrating that one Siri will be cooking your dinner.
anonymous 7 October, 2011 02:27
How can it even be called a comparison without even a mention of Vlingo?
A 3rd party app does it first, another 3rd party app copy's it, and it's not news until it's sanctioned by Apple?
anonymous 7 October, 2011 04:05
. Last week I upgraded from the Iphone 4 to the samsung galaxy 2 after being lured in buy the gorgeous screen and how amazingly light and thin it is, also out of curiosity to see how good android actually had become.
Verdict - very disappointed to be honest! It just isn't as well designed as the IOS platform, the apps are of an inferior quality and its easy to see why more are free. It makes me laugh to see people criticising apple for copying the notifications of android when samsung have copied almost everyone of their ideas from apple! Even the box it came in was identical to the Iphone.
The galaxy has also frozen multiple times already and putting music and photos onto the device is a chore compared to using Itunes. Don't get me wrong I think the galaxy 2 is decent phone and very well priced but after giving it a week of heavy use I already miss my Iphone as it does everything the galaxy does, just a lot better! Everyone banging on about there phone doing all these things already are missing the point, Apple make doing these things a pleasure rather than a frustrating chore. I read a comment saying using the Iphone was like going back to 2006 if i'm honest I feel like that with my galaxy 2 all the overly complicated settings and unnecessary options. On paper you can give it to the G2, on real life use I think the Iphone wins by a considerable distance. I'll give it a bit more time to grow on me but I think I could be giving this to the wife and upgrading again to the Iphone 4s. I know not everyone will agree with me and I can see the why some people prefer android but thats the beauty of it there are now so many good phones we all have a choice, I don't understand why there are so many weirdo fanboys hating one brand or another.
anonymous 7 October, 2011 04:11
Ungraded processor eh?
anonymous 7 October, 2011 05:13
i was so dissapointed that iphone 4s was the new iphone...i was so ready to trade_in my evo 4g..only if the iphone came out with a 4 inch screen...the specs are good ...but i want a 4 inch screen or larger...i guess ill get epic touch 4g ...
anonymous 7 October, 2011 05:15
I had an iPhone, and it was a horrendous experience. I loved it the first day I had it, then rapidly recognised iOS for the utter rubbish it is. I couldn't do most of the things I had expected to be able to do. I had to Jailbreak within the first couple of days, which made iOS only slightly more usable - unobtrusive notifications, useful information on the lock screen, in fact, almost, but not quite useful. There's a reason the process has been termed "Jailbreaking" - and that's a term coined by Apple fans.
It was a year and a half of sheer frustration - using the ridiculously sub-standard iTunes - which didn't work most of the time - to transfer music, and convert videos. I really don't want to spend hours re-importing and converting music and video, only to have iTunes crash mid-way through transfer, forcing me to restart the whole process again because the pre-crash transfer didn't actually transfer anything. I just want to plug in the USB, transfer, and disconnect.
I don't even know where to begin regarding development. I've been programming for a long time, and iOS is by far the worst platform I have ever had the misfortune of attempting to develop on. I don't want to have to buy a Mac, use xcode (another sub-standard product) and activate my 'phone with Apple in order to have the privilege to develop - and what's more, I had to PAY for the privilege to code... I want to start Eclipse, point it to the SDK, and code.
I now have an Android 'phone, and it's by far superior in every respect, from the hardware, to the user interface, OS, and development is a pleasure, not an expensive chore, and it can be as simple or as complex to use as I want it to be.
Oh, and I spent many hours trawling through Apple's App Store enthusiastically looking for cool applications, and there is just as much junk in there as the Android market. All the apps I used on my iPhone are available on Android - or an equally good alternative is available. Just because there are more accessories available for a Ford Fiesta than a Toyota Corola, does that make it a better car? The "there are more apps in Apple's store" argument is clutching at straws, at best. Seriously, that's the Ace card? More apps?
It makes me chuckle to think how excited people are about the fact that it's taken Apple more than a year to develop a marginally better processor, and camera.
Only those blinded by Apple's (admittedly brilliant) marketing can't see iOS, and the iPhone for the expensive, overblown, hyped-up, sub-par fashion accessory that it really is. But hey, you keep on convincing yourselves. At least Apple's App store has more apps, eh?

I agree the iphone 4s is the best phone right now. It has a comparable processor, with a much better graphics processor. It is better looking and has higher quality hardware. Yes you could point out that the galaxy has a bunch of little features like removable memory/battery that aren't that big of a deal but what it really comes down to is the os. The os is the absolute most important thing about a phone followed by processing speed. IOS is the difference maker. Its more enjoyable to use, less of a mess, way more stable, an has the better app store. IOS 5 finally makes the iphone "pc free" and will auto sync over wifi in the background, adds icloud, and has the best voice recognizing software. The iphone 4s didn't change in looks but changed where it counts, in speed and os. The Galaxy s2 is a great piece of hardware and id probably get it if is wasnt for the os but id prefer the iphone 4s. Well see how ice cream sandwich turns out. The iphone does however, need a bigger screen like a 4.0 which I expect to see on the iphone 5.

Winner my a** wht kind of retarded review was this.... how can a slightly evolutionary model of a 15 month old technology beat the current BEST SMART PHONE in the market?
anonymous 7 October, 2011 13:11
funny how all the android lovers come out bashing the report and the apple fan boys couldn't give a monkeys.
anonymous 7 October, 2011 15:41
I am a iphone4 user for more than a year. I am extremely satisfied with it. I like it's superb design and it's reliability. Being a rough user I was very much afraid that the phone would not maintain its mint condition for long. No phone of mine has lasted more than year. I am delighted to say my iPhone 4 is virtually as good as new even today inspire of dropping it a couple of times. It is an amazing device and every time I hold it it my hands I am mesmerized by it. I would not change it's leica like design and the retina display for anything else.
I am really happy that apple has decided to retain these features in the new phone. If anything I feel the iphone4s is the ultimate upgrade for an already great device.
Don't know much about android but iPhone/iOS combination is hard to beat.
Needless to sat I will be upgrading soon as it becomes available.

@dean shepherd retard apple/macintosh have been revolutionary since every one in this generation can remember .........they made the first computer with a monitor (unarguable fact) everything they made that they stated as revolutionary is revolutionary and android admits it if u take ur time to find out fact instead of blabbing bull shit ...apple is a platform for windows android etc to copy htc would still be on their flimsy clunky dvices if not for ipphone u fandroids would be sucking on fat blackberrys with 256 coloured screens apple sets the pace android and windows scramble around copying it and trying to make it better ..........admit it there would be no htc desire or android based phone if not for apple ............there would be no tablet because all of u were disgusted at the idea when steve jobbs came on the platform to announce it ..........yall should just shut up the next time u decide to talk about tech
anonymous 7 October, 2011 22:16
iPhone 4S wins?
I think someones getting a back hander from Apple here.
The only feature that's possibly is the camera. Otherwise, "Apple iPhone 4S - welcome to Android 2010".

anonymous 7 October, 2011 22:50
dont forget samsung is the biggest chipset producer in this world so samsung have the better chipset
AppleRocks16 8 October, 2011 07:08
These phones both have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. There shouldn't be so much fuss on who wins. Some people may prefer Samsung for their needs and others may prefer the iPhone.
anonymous 8 October, 2011 09:57
Camera and Software.. draw?
Iphone camera is dud. IOS is a crap.
anonymous 8 October, 2011 11:26
Both phones have their pros and cons, however, I do believe that Samsung's Galaxy S2 must win on this occasion. The Galaxy S2 (gs2) has already included all the features that apple has claimed to be new, new to apple that is.
For instance, the 8mp camera which apple says is new and the capture a picture immediately after taking one photo, the only use for this, I would say, is if you need a burst camera feature and there are already applications for this on both platforms. However, not discounting Apple's new lens for the camera, the 'battle' is pretty close. But, the gs2 has a better forward facing camera (2mp vs VGA) which is central to one of the things Apple prides itself for 'Facetime'. DRAW here.
Also, the processor, apple have had to ^copy^ pretty much every new phone on the market. Apple doesn't really need a new processor, as iOS is so simple it deosn't take much processing power, IT IS JUST A WASTE. But on the gs2, i would say that they are both as fast as each other EVEN WHEN THE GS2 IS RUNNING 10 APPS AND LIVE WALLPAPERS.
I myself was very almost seduced by the 'hype' but all I found was the websites supposedly posting good info were usually nothing more than a shroud of lies.
Also, people saying 'Siri' would be Apple's trump card may be mistaken as, not many people actually use this feature, if they do, it is usually to show but not for use in real life. Imagine being on a train speaking to your phone, but until this becomes the norm (which is quite unlikely) there is no point. Even if it does, Samsung still has 'Vlingo' which does the same job, which, I am sure, will be updated to compete with 'Siri' anyway.
See, if the 'iPhone 4S' had come out, say 6 months earlier, it may had won again. However, the 'iPhone 4S' is still a good phone and should not be discounted but I would say the Galaxy S2 is the best, not only on price but also on specs and real life usage. Also, waiting 16 months(ish) for a 'new' iPhone without a redesign would be quite disappointing as people can mistake it for the 'iPhone 4' which we can now say is worse than the 'Galaxy S2'.
'iCloud' has already been accomplished with dropbox on both 'iOS' and 'Android' even 'Windows' and 'Macs' so why do you need iCloud?
But, the 'iPhone 4' and the 'iPhone 4S' are still good phones, definitely better than most of the other phones out there, but I would say that the Galaxy S2 is better.
anonymous 8 October, 2011 18:10
I got a nokia 8310 & it lights up blue when i push the buttons! bet you all impressed.
anonymous 9 October, 2011 04:39
I have been an 'Apple Fan Boy' for quite a few years, had tried some early android phones and was smug as a bug in a rug with my iphone. I put up with the 'enclosed' Apple world because nothing else at the time did as many of the things I wanted my smartphone to do.
As a few people above are boasting about Apples regular updates to there software, I only ever remember the constant bombardment of attempts to upgrade my IOS through itunes, every time I wanted to change some music on my phone (to the extent I stopped trying!). It was no coincidence these 'updates' always appeared a few days after the latest jailbreak appeared.
My world changed the first time I saw a friends Galaxy S2, I saw the light (and it wasn't reflecting off it's beautiful screen). So to all you poor brainwashed apple sheep, there is help out there and a brighter life available when you shake off those itunes shackles!
anonymous 9 October, 2011 14:46
yo ..............who do you know that doesnt have itunes on their laptop ............what does erryone play their music with .itunes so you should shut the **** up ..........and think ............ive got the nexus and iphone 4 an htc desire and samsung galaxy s2 ............sending data on the androids is so fustrating.....i had to download a bluetooth transfer app on the nexus and the iphone .of course the iphone app was easier to interact with ............updating updating .....its all b******* ...........androids update hemselves so many times its like twitter ......eating up ur data and adding on the bills...........file transfer is so disgusting to deal with ...........infact am sick of havin convos with u illeterates its reduces my iq
anonymous 9 October, 2011 18:05
Yo **** head above! Before you go around calling people retards, you should look at your self, i.e with regards to spelling.
anonymous 10 October, 2011 13:01
since when did anyone care about spelling on comments over the internet?????
anonymous 10 October, 2011 20:05
This is pretty poor stuff cnet, i don't claim to be an amazing journalist and i understand that i never will be. But i recently had a flick through my website and honestly i can say that the bull you guys are pushing day in day out is so frustrating! Please sort this out cnet! You tested the facets of the phones that play to the iphones strengths, did you not even consider the fact that the new iphone does not even have true 4g!?!?! Did you consider the fact that the sgs2 has true multitasking? Did you consider the fact that the sgs2 has wireless syncing? Did you consider the fact that despite its "poor build quality" the sgs2 will, lets face it, survive more than a few drops whereas the iphone will be cracked before it hits the ground? Rubbish cnet, just rubbish.
anonymous 11 October, 2011 13:18
you are clearly an illerate my iphone 4 has dropped a whole floor without a scratch wheras my s2 dropped from the side of my head while i was having a call and its cracked an iphone can sync wirelessly u retard and noone knows multitasking the way apple does will u all just flippin admit it
anonymous 11 October, 2011 19:20
Dont worry about spelling my friend, its clear the illiterate person is an Apple Fan. They probably dont even realise they made a mistake. CNET is becoming a joke after the results of this test. They are quite clearly biast.
anonymous 11 October, 2011 21:48
Everything mentioned that Iphone does, Android does and has been doing for a while now, or has been available as a 3rd party app. Yes, even the Voice Commands. "Voice Talk" and "Voice Search" do exactly what "Siri" does.
Along with everything else mentioned.
I also like getting 24 hours of life out of my phone on normal use before needing a charger.
anonymous 12 October, 2011 13:21
this is dum ..........comparing a phone that hasnt even been tested yet ........and person above ur clearly a blind android fan wat u said about android having as a third party app is bullshit i have looked for 13 apps on the android and samsung market on my s2 and not found shit whereas on my iphone 4 i found at least 5 different apps for each app i searched for u need to think outside of the box yo samsung s 2 is better than the iphone 4 but noone should talk shit otherwise everything that samsung and htc does has been lifted off of apple the companys admitted it themselves google even said noone does it as good as apple and that was before steve jobbs death so dont bring that up
anonymous 12 October, 2011 13:57
it the bigger screen is better we should buy a 56 inch led smart tv and put it in our pockets.
the point is that you put more pixels in less area.
in screen iphone 4s teve jobs
anonymous 12 October, 2011 15:34
yes thats true it should be an overall draw. The person can't count unless he/she is a iphone 4s fan. Isn't it a bit bias?
anonymous 12 October, 2011 16:43
For everyone saying that the S2 smashes the 4S, just look at the GPU, the powervr on the 4S is twice as fast as the Mali400 found on the S2 as proven by benchmarks done on the iPad 2. and the CPU is a draw.
The screen resolution is higher on the 4S, so you get a higher PPI. But if a massive screen is what your looking for, then the S2 is for you.
And people that say that removable storage and battery is needed dont't know anything about product design. You try to minimize the size of the device so on board flash memory and non-removable battery makes sense.
I don't remember a time I had to replace a battery on a phone. Plus, because of apple's wide network of stores, they will replace it for you incase of a rare battery fault or end of battery life. If Samsung did the same, you would have to send the phone over and wait forever for a battery replacement!
anonymous 12 October, 2011 18:00
I have an S2 Galaxy and my wife has an IPhone. ****** the thickness. The thinner the phone the crappier it's going to sound. If Apple try to copy Samsung on this they will be making a mistake. I would not get such a big screen on my next phone, jeans' pockets are not that deep. If you have keys or something in your pocket and the phone does not go fully in you get a jab in the hip. BUT!! The biggest most aweful @#@#$ aweful thing about the Samsung S2 is the VLingo NOT helpful assistant. It is embedded in the firmware ala Apple paradigm, it does not work at all if you do not have a Data connection, it is NOT hands free as you have to tap the screen to make it listen (tapping the button on your headset does nothing) it does not tell you what it is doing unless you first put it into driving mode, but then in this mode it READS YOUR SMS's TO THE OTHER OCCUPANTS IN YOUR CAR I MEAN WTF !!!!! Apple is bringing out SIRI in their next firmware release. Shame. Apple users can now have something else in their life besides their spouse that doesn't understand what they are saying. Oh BTW when Vlingo is activated in your car while you are driving it constantly tries to understand road noise, all the while burning up your precious 3G bandwidth, BECAUSE IT NEEDS A @#$$% DATA CONNECTION !!! If you use your phone as A PHONE in the car a lot DO NOT GET THE SAMSUNG S2.
srsk03 12 October, 2011 22:34
i thought cnet was a fair trustable tech site. this clearly shows cnet is bias towards apple
i mean how the hell is iphone 4s winner when it was 2 wins for each fone and x1 draw
how the hell iphone own???
anonymous 13 October, 2011 12:40
@ 6 October 2011 18:15 if you look closely you will see the enhanced graphics performance was in comparison to the previous iphone iteration; a phone that, top my understanding wasn't renowned for its graphical performance.Top then say out would be better than the Galaxy S II's Mali 400 MP onboard gpu with quad fragment core, which do advanced that current benchmarks can't recognise all of them (go on gsmarena), may be a wishful statement.
anonymous 14 October, 2011 13:36
at srsk03 dont worry cnet au is anto apple just go there i kinda prefer them most of the times as they are genuine with their decision, all bias aside the iPone 4s is actually a good phone. definitely much better than the iPhone 4 at its time, at least now it has features which are of great use such as a decent camera, and a AI personal assistant. Vlingo is great and 50% is probably a direct copy but this works on it and further improves it, anyhow nexus prime will be the game changer. looking forward to the 19th
anonymous 15 October, 2011 01:08
samsung makes part of the iphone screen and browser
anonymous 15 October, 2011 01:58
The samsung galaxy s2 so deserved to win, i have been into stores and had a look at these phones myself, the samsung galax was so much better, it had a stylish design and felt amazing in your hands, it was awesome to hold, and it worked so fast and efficiently! where as the iphone 4s, we i have seen an iphone 4, nobody wants a different iphone 4 with just a camera upgrade and performace tweek!
Samsung Galaxy s2 ftw!
anonymous 15 October, 2011 04:01
Siri is missing two key features already on the SGS2. 1. Voice activation. With the Galaxy S2 you just say 'hey galaxy' and it responds 'what would you like to do?' 2. Google Navigation. 'Navigate to the nearest coffee shop' brings up Google's 3D sat-nav with the route calculated.
anonymous 15 October, 2011 19:40
I think you pay for sat-nav on the iPhone, where its free on android. Also thought LG made the screen for iPhone 4s. I have just looked at both phones in store working live & without dought the S2 was superior. Thats why I chose the S2. Also all the sales staff had Android phones of their own, so I think that says everything. Ps. been using the S2 & I'm in love with a phone.
anonymous 15 October, 2011 22:23
HAHA! It's funny watching the smartphone argument turn into exactly the same fanboy-fest the computer world was for the longest time. I guess everyone got bored with that battle, and so now its been scaled down to cellphones.
And once again, a big part of this battle is the 'just let Apple win always!' thing.
For years, real tech enthusiasts were watching while Apple would take its sweet time to come up with an update to one of their plastic toy computers- and it would have CPU and graphics from two years ago. The PC world was long rocking fast i7 and i5 computers, while the Apple plantation was stuck in Core2Duo land. Amazing new graphic cards would come out for the PC, the Macheads would be stuck with throwaways from years past, or onboard crap in a desktop, But 'reviews' like this would slavishly conclude: Apple wins! Yay!
Granted, Vista set the PC world back, but the Macheads still love to pretend that Windows 7 is like using Windows 3.1 or something, so you'll still hear all the fawning shouts of "OSX beats Windows! Yay!"
Now, as if all of that lameness wasn't enough, we've taken it down a notch to arguing about friggen cellphones!
Predictably, I see the same pattern: Apple dilly-dallies and releases a point update to their ONE modern phone that's not too bad, but nothing earth-shaking, and instantly it's: "Apple wins! Just for playing, they get all the points!"
Meanwhile, there have been any number of phones with more impressive hardware and features than the iPhone 4. It's jus that the media and legions of brainwashed fanboys don't camp outside Apple's stores for days before any of those are released, and then fawn over them for years on end (it needs to be years, because that's how long it'll take Apple to release anything newer to fawn over). One suspects that many of these people are influenced by the fact that they've spent so much time stumping for Apple and camping out on their doorstep awaiting the next iGizmo, that they're incapable of looking at the thing objectively. No, it's just the best... simply because Apple eventually showed up and (slowly) delivered it.
All the iOS vs Android is the same rehash of OSX vs Windows, just dumbed down that much farther. iOS is okay, but really, it's just page after page of app icons. I sometimes laugh when my iPhone owning friends have to page through so much crap to get to the one function they're looking for, while I simply tap a widget. It's downright comical at times. Oh wait, but now you finally get decent notifications- we'll soon be treated to the spectacle of how Apple invented that. Android has speech-recognition for years, but suddenly Apple invented it. I look forward to the year 2014 when the iPhone FINALLY gets a 4" screen- we'll finally get to hear all about how Apple invented it, and how "Apple wins! They finally delivered something! They win!"
anonymous 15 October, 2011 22:43
It's lame hearing Apple fans justify the smaller screen with "What do I want, to carry around a brick?"
The image above the article illustrates it perfectly: the iPhone wouldn't have to get bigger, to accomodate a bigger screen, you'd simply have less useless plastic space on the top and bottom like the Samsung phone. Let's just say it: LIKE THE BETTER DESIGNED PHONE.
Apple always gets credit for the best industrial design of anyone, and yet how is it Samsung can figure out simple things like this, and Apple can't?
But we all know it's to do with the fact that Apple doesn't really have to innovate. Whatever they release, fanbois will just eat up and claim it's the best, so why even bother. It's that aspect I hate most about Apple and their rabid fans. They actually help dumb-down the tech world by being such suck-ups to Apple, that Apple doesn't even need to compete. If Apple had more critics, they'd have to scramble to stay afloat. We would probably have the iPhone 7 by now, with a 4.5" edge to edge display. But no need to bother, the fanbois will still pay top dollar for a bump to last year's phone, without even a design upgrade!
But why really innovate and compete when you can just bump up the same old design and make even more billions and billions of dollars. I find it telling that many Apple fanbois will complain about companies making obscene profits, but when it comes to ponying up for Apple, they can't shell out excessive amounts of cash fast enough.
anonymous 16 October, 2011 02:49
Iphone must be bought for showing gratitude towards Jobs....
Otherwise better to buy Galaxy S2...mindblowing phone
greek 16 October, 2011 13:28
Tell me if this is weird or not. I log onto various tech news nowadays and actually get a comical buzz out of reading the 'fisticuffs' between the Appledroids :) Keep it up - it's free entertainment. I played around with the HTC HD7 the other day. I reckon I might give that a serious look next year when my contract's up. I never see it mentioned in the reviews but I enjoyed mucking around with it.
For me, I think I use the net the most and value a large screen. My phone also needs to be snappy - I'm not worried about microseconds - just one or two. And getting to my most used functions easily (preferably with no more than one touch) is important too. I have also realised after using a smartphone for a few years that a decent camera is crucial.
Android has been fun - no hiccups (except the stupid Google primary account thing - no, I don't want to reset my phone) - the Desire has worked flawlessly.
But next time, I will choose the phone that does the aforementioned the best.
Oh, and here in Australia, the worst thing about all this phone stuff is the crumby plans we have to put up with. Eg. $59 p/mth for $400 worth of calls and 1Gb of data. We get screwed big time.
Enjoy your phones people :)

Spoken like a moron who doesn't know anything about hardware...
That's just like someone deciding what is the better of two cars just by looking at the interior and the body, without bothering to look in to important things like the engine, etc.
Stay away from the tech articles, please.
anonymous 17 October, 2011 10:59
Am I missing that the Iphoen 4S has a flash, it's also useful as a torch, plus you can take pictures at night, does any of the Samsung phones come with a flash ?
I have used an Android phone, but IPhone wins hands down, for one it has so many more 350,000 + apps how many do the andrroid phones have ?, and after jailbreaking it you can do a lot of customization on it, plus it is so easy to use compared to Android phones.
Not sure how easy it is to get all apps, data, texts, pics and emails back on Andriod, but it takes 1.5 hrs through Itunes on Iphone, I know as dropped my Iphone in a swimming pool, after getting a new phone it was back up an running in 1.5 hrs
Ease of use Iphone wins, I haven't had to use a manual to set up any of my Iphone, but had to read a manual to set up an Andriod phone as it's nowhere near as easy to use or set up emails both Persoanl (Gmail) and Work (Exchange).
Iphone all the way... Looking forward to Iphone 5
anonymous 17 October, 2011 11:12
Very bad compare...
You are very biased for iPhone..
The Galaxy S 2 design is much better than iPhone 4S. Doesn't draw as you write in your dirty article.
anonymous 17 October, 2011 14:02
CNET is and was always BIASED...
anonymous 17 October, 2011 18:47
You think 1.5hrs is a fast restore???
Android way: enter gmail username and password...done. 10mins and android would resync all contacts, calendar , email and settings etc...OVER THE AIR.
YES pretty much all android phones comes with a flash/LED light,,, not exactly cutting edge technology fitting a light to rear of phone. (altho it must be, as apple have ONLY just done it....amazing....)
iPhone bad points you have failed to mention: iTunes, CPU only clocked at 1GHz (dual), 512MB RAM, non-removable battery, micro simcard, display too small and colours washed out, no radio, no flash, no settings and looks horrible...
CNET, why do a "comparison" when you don't actually compare anything (correctly)...
anonymous 17 October, 2011 21:45
What's the ******* point of this article when you keep saying "Draw as we haven't reviewed the iPhone 4S yet". Pathetic. Waste. of. time.
anonymous 17 October, 2011 22:02
The author tries to be funny I guess with all the "jokes" but ends up looking like fool. If a CNET employee finds the Android market too challenging, then that person is definitely in the wrong disciplined. A Less than mediocre comparison by someone who is not very knowledgeable.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 00:22
I was a diehard iPhone user, first gen through 4. Two days ago I bought the GS2 and I love it. It's a better phone period. Apple released a phone 16 months later that's basically a software update of the last phone.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 08:40
Go to youtube and see tby yourself he comparison video by "smartphoney"
GS2 wins in all aspects
anonymous 18 October, 2011 12:16
Iphone 4S can sync wirelessly, I love Itunes, it's great connect it up, load all music, Books, Videos, hiot Sync and away it goes, why are people so Anti Iphone, and is it me all are all Smart phones trying to copy the Iphone in design, take the Ipad, I coudl be wrong but did Any other company bring out a tablet until the Ipad that was anywhere as decent as the Ipad ?
The Andriod market is horrible to navigate to, How many Android users can say they were able set up their phones without reading a manual from start to finsih otr refer to the internet, it took me all of 30 mins to sort my Iphone 4 out, I don't see many people queing for the latest Samsung phone, My Tom Tom on my Iphone was free (jailbrake anyone !!)
I have used an HTC Wildfire - That is an android phone!, sooo much slower than an Iphone to boot up and soo slow at loading internet and apps!
Even my 7 year old can navigate his way round my Iphone without any help, can the same be said for the Android Phones ?
anonymous 18 October, 2011 14:49
sir plz dont make fools people . iphone is worst against samsung s II .
anonymous 18 October, 2011 18:27
iPhone is better. End of story.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 19:37

anonymous 18 October, 2011 19:40
It's OK not everyone is man enough to wield the awesomeness that is the Samsung Galaxy 2s.
anonymous 18 October, 2011 19:52
It would be great then when you write a review. You would get the specs on the items you are reviewing correct. Also if you can grade something properly because you favor one item more then another, keep your reviews to yourself. "Forget Boring Hardware".... Then why write the **** Pointless and Bias review *******.
anonymous 19 October, 2011 02:34
I think the reason why apple launched 4s is to allow samsung to introduce their nexus prime, an upgrade from galaxy s2, then knock it out with iphone 5.
anonymous 19 October, 2011 05:16
iphone 4s is better in everything except the screen size.the reason why its faster is because of ios 5.if android comes out with a new os then gs2 will be faster.i have both phones and i have done speed tests.forget about the flash or the display thats on the screen people are not going to worry about that. they just want to get on the internet and go.for now the iphone is faster.i like both phones though
anonymous 19 October, 2011 08:27
Iphone 4s got siri. wow. S2 has been destroyed.
anonymous 20 October, 2011 20:09
come on, i got an s2 for 25 squid a month all in an its awesome, the cheapest iphone 4s is 35-40, so tell me overall what the best deal, no brainer.
anonymous 21 October, 2011 14:03
Yes, Apple Mac fans are finding it difficult to accept that their "little darling" is no longer unequivocally dominating the top rung in smart phones and ipads. I get tired of listening to the bias of Apple fan diehards, mainly because few, if EVER, try other brands and therefore rave on in total ignorance. Although CNET reviewers obviously must operate competitor products for review comparisons, one still gets the impression that they never become TRULY familiar with competitor products because they are privately, perhaps, Apple users? - in other words, their reviews of competitor smart phones and ipads are frequently shallow, without giving credit where it is due to Apple's competitors - so in effect there is also a degree of wilful ignorance, similar to that found in the die hard Apple cult of consumers. <br />
<br />
CNET have yet again done the very same thing when comparing the iphone 4S with Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, making glaring oversights of various features to be found in the Galaxy. Might I mention that Samsung FIRST introduced, ALMOST FOUR YEARS AGO NOW, into its Smasung HD smartphone the following features:<br />
<br />
HDMI video, an amazing 8 mega pix camera with high quality sensors, 16 Gig storage with capacity for extension to 32 gig, also audio messaging, face recognition, pull down menus . I have one and it is STILL better than Apple's iphone 4S, which my daughter swears by, but which has basically now copied these features - partly the reason Samsung has finally said enough is enough, having put up with Apple stealing Samsung technology for some years now.<br />
<br />
The little know fact is that although Steve Jobs may take full credit for his very original innovation in introducing the very first smart phone and ipad concept, Samsung built them for him! Apple relies on others (namely Samsung) to build the technology for its designs and has now been caught napping, through resting on its laurels for a tad too long, thereby allowing Samsung and Google to get the jump on it. Steve Jobs vowed he would kill Android - (which did originally copy Apple's ideas), however the market has spoken - it prefers real advances in innovation, not window-dressing making a pretence of advancements and Samsung's sales figures have now outstripped Apple's. <br />
<br />
Of course, Apple is not happy about this and is resorting to the Courts, starting to get real 'dirty' and seeking injunctions all over the place to prevent Samsung from selling its iPad. Samsung is retaliating. It is going to be an interesting battle royale.<br />
<br />
It is hard to swallow, but sadly Apple has taken its eye off the ball and can no longer lay claim to the title of 'radical innovater' as it once could with confidence. It is some years since it did produced anything to live up to that name. Even its Mac OS for its computers is looking old-fashioned, outshone by open source PC softtware, such as Libra or Open Office.org and the like. <br />
<br />
Anyone who knows anything about programming knows that Mac OS, be it for its computers/laptops/iPads or smart phones is jaded, tired and needs a re-write, together with its limitations, its lack of compatibility, etc. etc. no longer workable in a business world requiring access to 3rd Party software.

If the Android operating system is as perfect as everyone makes out then how come we haven't seen an Android version of the Macbook, and why not go one step futher and call it the AndroidBook ?
Why did Android wait till the Iphoen and the Ipad was released before bringing there's to market.. oh wait they wouldn;t have anythign to copy to bring it to market would they?
anonymous 21 October, 2011 14:12
Libra or Open Office.org are you for real, how many schools or professional organisations use those products, I've worked in manufacturing, engineering, electrical and now educational and 100% of all the companies I have worked for in the last 20 years have used Microsoft Products because they are the best prodcuts to do the job be it on a Mac or a PC.
How many companies have you worked for that have Open Office as their standard Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database or email program in the professional environment ?
anonymous 21 October, 2011 15:15
@anon timestamped 14:12
Eh? Where have I made the claim that many schools, professional orgs and businesses use Open Office.org or Libra ahead of Microsoft? Did I really say that? Read again.
You have missed the point ... the very point being ... that EVEN these open resource programmes are considered by IT professionals to be superior to the Mac OS. Sure, ... the corporate world is still heavily in favour of MS, mainly due to being 'tied to it' for historical reasons, however the stats - incredible as this may seem - now tell us that use of Open Office.org has higher usage figures now than MS - boosted by a switch to it by home users. Further, the developers of Open Office.org and of Libra consider that MS OS and Mac OS are BOTH old-fashioned and outdated compared!

How does the fact that Android has not yet been utilised in desktop computing make it automatically an inferior OS in a phone or tablet? Could it be it is not interested in competing in a market already full of too many OS to choose from and is therefore targeting a specific market, thereby making it a specialist in that market? Makes sense to me.
I am not aware of Android having put its name to any ipad, tablet or smart phone. I do know that Samsung and other hardware makers use the Android OS in these hardwares. Shouldn't the question be why did other tech hardware builders wait for Apple? Well ... shouldn't it? Android had nothing to do with the release dates.
anonymous 21 October, 2011 16:14
O.k, I can't really see any difference apart from that THE COMMENTS ARE THE MOST BIASED THING ABOUT THE REVIEW!!! all you android users can't take the shock when there is a result and iPhone win, Yet when there is a review biased towards android, you take it a god sent miracle, and that someone was right in saying Apple are behind. let me tell you something, you are all biased to your opinion and no matter how much you try, no one will ever win this war of comments so just stop it right here. its your phone, and your choice, don't go accusing other people of having a 'worse or better phone than you'.
anonymous 21 October, 2011 17:57
Doh! If they are each superior to the other but in different areas, then it could be classed as a draw. If one is clearly superior in more features, then it is a case of seeing that for what it is. Isn't that what a review is all about? Clearly, had this review been thorough, leaving no doubt, missing and overlooking nothing, then the argument here could not prevail. The reason it is prevailing, is because the reviewer has failed in his purpose - to enlighten the customer. For those genuinely interested in a comprehensive comparison there are plenty of 'visual' comparisons on YouTube where you can SEE on video with your very own eyes the two phones performance in reality, or alternavely read other reviews on other websites which look at ALL of the two phones' capabilities in depth. This review is a joke - skimming the surface of both phones' capabilities.
Having both phones in this family, two things are clear from many of the posts here - those who are joined at the hip to their brand, are happy to remain ignorant of all other brands and ignorant of improved technology, including the reviewer here. Ignorance is bliss and may you all be happy in it.

I know there are many comments for and against Apple Iphone 4S and Samsung GS2 or Andriod...
Let me refer to people that have used and loved Windows XP, and is using Windows 7... What was the reason? It was flexible, you can connect up anything and do almost anything, from playing any games, installing any programs, the functions were endless...
Now, getting back to this;
1. Apple products such as iPad, iPhone, and all their iStuff has to be related to some other iStuff... They have a chain around your neck and only allow what they think is good for the company, note they do say they want to protect privacy, and that is a load of bull; Its not to protect media's privacy is only so they can sell through itunes
2. Samsung and Andriod have the lead in what could be the latest technolgical advancments, they have, ofcourse used other ideas from other companies, and put them together to come up with a 'flexible, intuitive, compatibilie, and easy' phone, and tablet. You can do almost anything even better with the Galaxy S2,
Siri, I would give it to them, although its not new, there has been a free voice recognition app 'Vlingo' and its just as good. The only problem is being its level of integration and the quality in which it will listen to the user...
What do you think? Do you like a phone that has a chain around your neck, or a slightly better phone that allows you to do anything you can possibility achieve?
anonymous 23 October, 2011 10:42
I got my galaxy s2 mid April, and if Apple have only just released a phone that can rival they are extremely behind.
Apple clearly rely too much on the brand junkies than actually improving phones. Why not make a phone that would be BETTER than any androids on the market instead of just being as good as.
And how long before a new iphone is released? A year? 18 months? By that point they'll be even further behind.
Also, I can add an infinite amount of space to my phone with SD cards, whereas iphone users can't.
I would agree that the Android market isn't great, but it's hardly full of rubbish. All you have to do is read reviews to see if it's half decent.
As for the menus being hard to navigate - as if, a monkey could use it.
Also, whoever wrote this blog obviously can't count because I believe that was a tie.
If iphones really were the best phones on the market I would get one tomorrow but they're seriously behind and will continue to be more behind.
anonymous 23 October, 2011 10:53
A comment 5 days ago "I set my iphone up in half hour" I turned my S2 on, hooked it up to wifi in all of about 30 seconds, typed in my google details and had instant access to the market.
And "how many android users can say they set their phones up withiut reading a manual front to back" me for one, I never even took the manual out the box.
anonymous 23 October, 2011 17:24
lol iphone won because apple bribed cnet :P
i mean seriously S2 has 1.2ghz dual core
i phone has 1ghz dual core UNDER CLOCKED to 800MHZ...
lol S2 owns iphone 4s any day...
anonymous 23 October, 2011 17:48
It seems everyone forgets that it has taken android a whole year to surpass the iphone 4, and in some areas android are STILL BEHIND, don't get me wrong, i love what android has brought to the market, but if apple have 'copied' that, then there is really no reason to stay with android, because apple will now have it all on their iOS. Android users also forget the other 200 odd new features that apple has added, therefore putting their iOS ahead again... Android have very powerful processors (1.2 GHz) that throw impressive specs right at apples face, but apple's less powerful processor (800MHz) seems to wipe the floor with android... even android fanbois must see that that is a bit pointless, having those massively powerful Goliath processors only to be defeated by David again. Next thing is that a lot of people argue that android has a bigger market share than apple, well let me tell you that android is actually run on hundreds of phones from many makers, i ask you android users, if it takes hundreds of android phones just to bring down one phone, tell me, is that argument really worth fighting, i know my answer. Again, Android software is extremely good but at the end of the day its down to what you want from a phone, suck it up android lovers, and face the facts. One other thing, i agree with everyone in saying that this review is clearly biased and should be taken of the internet. You need to clear up your act Cnet...
anonymous 24 October, 2011 13:44
Bad comparison. Simplicity is not an argument. Because of iphone 4 simplicity, I have chosen S2. There is a lot of customizations and fun. I never thought that it will so much fun. Next time I would buy samsung s2. There is no better phone yet. Iphone is not bad. But not worth for upgrade. Only for downgrade.
anonymous 25 October, 2011 12:25
This video is such a fix.. because the s2 had notifications too... in my personal opinion i think samsung glaxy s2 is a sexy unique classy phone.. and has much more to offer than projected above..whereas the iphone4s has the bogg standard luk... the iphone4s is a nice phone but the way people tght it wudve been the best thing around... does not seem to be the case as the best thing has been in the market 8months ago till to date.. wich is da galaxy S2
anonymous 25 October, 2011 15:31
Flash support, expandable memory, can play many more video formats, & a better screen. How does the iPhone win!??
anonymous 25 October, 2011 16:09
As everyone else has said, what a bias review! They never mentioned anything like "processors, expandable memory or flash"! Another thing, this siri rubbish is all just draggged out cause it's on an apple product, how weird would I look if I was seen talking to my phone on the bus or anywhere in public.. Not a very impressive upgrade from the iphone 4, for the first time, I can see apple is falling behind.
anonymous 25 October, 2011 21:29
Terrible review! The processor on the s2 is faster, can be setup however you want to use it, has a bigger screen and has a better front camera. This review is based on a personal view not facts....What happened to unbiased journalism?
anonymous 25 October, 2011 23:43
I have dropped my SGS2 three times now... twice just off the coffee table onto the wood floor and once of those times it was in it's protective case... but the once, it flew out my hand when I was fooling around and it skided across the wood flooring... I was totally certain I had trouble as it was not in the protective case, it when I picked it up and inspected it I was completely relieved... not a scratch. The SGS2 is built like a tank even though it does not feel that way.
As for comparing the SGS2 with the iPhone 4s... no competition... The SGS2 is simply the most stunning piece of kit.
anonymous 25 October, 2011 23:48
Cnet often do not seem impartial when it comes to Apple. Stop licking Apple's ****! You know the S2 is better
anonymous 27 October, 2011 08:05

galaxy s2 also has voice command so that blows the last round out of the water
anonymous 29 October, 2011 11:37
Get over it kids.<br />
The Iphone is new and i'm sure when they release the new Samsung it will retake the lead again, but until then just accept it. Did you really expect Apple to release an inferior phone as an upgrade?, its more expensive so surely you would expect it to be better and not worse?. To be fair the 4s is like **** of a shovel and god knows why you'd need anything faster, its a phone.<br />
<br />
Jaguar: Iphone<br />
Subaru: Samsung<br />
<br />
Different strokes for different folks.<br />
<br />
Buy a phone, get a life and stop worrying yourself about which is better ffs.
anonymous 29 October, 2011 17:03
how did apple invent the smartphone I was using HTC Xdas in 2003 that did most whats possible today all thats just been done is the sw has been smartened up thats all btw I hate iTunes
geroul 30 October, 2011 02:22
I phone is great, user friendly but recently apples suffer some setbacks, before iphone 4 have an issue of antenna, right now i phone 4s which is late to release have an issue of battery draining out. In this case even a non geek person could judge android galaxy S2 is winner for comparison. LOL...
anonymous 30 October, 2011 15:31
Wow you don't like apple. You big up the Samsung camera because its 8mp then begrudgingly say the iPhone 4s has 8mp too and the iphone4 'a mere 5mp'. Mp mean nothing without decent software and lenses etc. chances are the iphone4 wipes the floor with the Samsung, let alone what the 4s is capable of. Very biased review overall.
anonymous 31 October, 2011 16:19
The point for the operating system shoulder definitely gone to android. It's the freedom to use that counts, GS2 doesn't require any software to run on the PC, can be connected to file transfer on more than 3 PCs(unlike iDevices), and can be used as a mass storage, and moreover what about bluetooth file transfer??
And when are the points for expandable memory??
anonymous 31 October, 2011 20:56
Well the iPhone won by 3 and android 2
First round went to both 1-1
Second I iPhone 2-1
Third android 2-2
Forth 3-2
And
So who cares about storage and removable battery what you going to do buy removing your battery? That don't make me get a boner over removing a battery
Iphone 4s is quicker then galaxy s2 and you can see video on YouTube of iPhone 4s beating it
iluke53 3 November, 2011 01:19
Apple are king forever. The iPhone 4s is the better cell phone
anonymous 4 November, 2011 14:27
There are two sections in mobile devices.
1) Hardware: and Galaxy S 2 is way better than iPhone 4S, look at specs or games ported on both devices they run faster and smoother etc.
2) Software: Both are fine and depents on what people need. Untill now both operating systems cover more than 100% of people needs for phoning and accessing the web.
To pick a phone/mobile device you count the fashion, abilities like entertainment or things that will make your life even more simple.
Personaly i like bigger screen and the more proccessing speed for smoother browsing, gaming, also i want more battery life. Other prefer something more fanchy and shiny and expensive like a jewel to make impress. (Thats more woman thinking, we all have a female side inside us).
Thanks.
anonymous 4 November, 2011 14:32
Android phone = for programmers
iphone = for mortal people
anonymous 5 November, 2011 18:38
I personaly like the S2 better....ive owned the iPhone 4S for 1 week and the screen broke. But on the other hand Apple is the biggest network right now. However the Samsung Galaxy S2 is more complicated but has better software.
anonymous 5 November, 2011 20:35
You r so wrong and yu didnt show the voice software of the samsung and i own a samsung g s 2 and the screen defenitly looks better on samsungs supr amoled. you also didnt point out how the iphone came out like 5months after the samsung and that really isnt a fair match. finnaly it diesnt take hours to do customize the screen it took me only 5 minutes
anonymous 5 November, 2011 23:36
Galaxy S2 Is Better than iPhone 4S, Samsung releases Comparison to Prove it
Not only were Apple fans holding their breath yesterday during the iPhone 4S release event, but understandably, so were competitors. Samsung Electronics didn't waste any time in releasing a comparison sheet that points out the Galaxy S2's advantages over the iPhone 4S.
Samsung emphasises that its star smartphone has true 4G data with WiMAx, HSPA+ 42 or HSPA+21 Mbps, as opposed to the 3G HSPA 14.4 connectivity of rival iPhone 4S, AppleInsider reports. The Galaxy S2 is also presented as more appealing due to its screen area, 42% or 58% larger (depending on carrier version) than iPhone 4S currently has. The Super AMOLED Plus is depicted as a better option than the Retina Display, according to Strategy Analytics.
A higher resolution front camera, better video recording features, removable battery, HDTV remote control functionality and the partnership with US carrier T-Mobile are also listed as advantages for the Galaxy S2.
This recently published comparison, though perceived as an aggressive communication by some standards, is just the tip of the iceberg. Samsung Electronics and Apple have met in courts all over the world in more than 20 patent-infringement cases; the most recent action being taken by Samsung to stop the sale of the iPhone 4S in Italy and France, even before it hits these markets.

The Android users who said on 17th October & 23 october that they restored over 200 apps, 4gb of music, 3gb photos, all text messages, all notes in under 10mins over wifi must either have superfast Wifi or are liars as I did restored the above in just over an hour after my Iphone went into a swimming pool (next thing Android users will claim is their phones are waterproof to over 100Meteres and can sat underwater for over an hour!
anonymous 8 November, 2011 00:58
Stop calling us Samsung-fanboys !
We will go with any good product of any brand or OS, if we find it better. Even with Apple .
"Fanboys" is expression for people that blindly support something- like you iFanboys:)
BTW disgusting review . Like this CNET review, that state that battery of Galaxy Note is bad. CNET become more iLiers then Engadget
anonymous 8 November, 2011 02:51
I agree this its a poor article. Dont even speak of the specs? Such as the ghz dual core.. Or how about connectivity? I suppos 4g lte support is not important? Or flash support not important? Our the fact that u can't remove battery? Our can't upgrade storage capacity with a micro sd card? The galaxy s2 is far superior on every level. And u can't even compare the 2 fairly because iphone 4s in on the lsat gen level. (u can compare it with the original galaxy s)
anonymous 9 November, 2011 12:12
just got the samsung s2, after comparing it myself with a friends iphone 4s, i have to disagree with most of what you wrote here, to me, the iphone 4s is only an almost catch up to the samsung g s2, maybe there next model will be as good
anonymous 9 November, 2011 21:00
What a strange and very brief battle?!?!?
And why end the thing with sira without mentioning samsung's vlingo powered voice recognition.
I know full well that apples voice rec will undoubtably be far superior but it seems stupid to not mention it.
There is so much more to both phones and the potential to make a really interesting video.
Really disappointed.
This is dumbed down and directed at people who probably dont care about either phones true abilities.
What a shame.
Apple Fan and Galaxy Owner - (don't get me confused - I follow ideas - not products)

anonymous 12 November, 2011 20:52

Samsung Galaxy S2 shut down itself and failed to switch on back, battery last for 3 hours after 5th day purchasing the phone. Failed to charge the phone; error message “Battery Disconnected” when plugging travel charger on 9th day after date purchased. Samsung refused to change new unit even phone faulty less than 2 weeks, technician expect customer to send mobile to service center every time same problem persist. Samsung technician is blaming market application causing phone problem even never take other aspect to consideration like battery or phone circuit faulty.

Rob Berry 25 November, 2011 17:56
I Want An SG2, But Im Dissapointed By The Low Res Compared To The DPI Of The Rentina Display, It Just Doesnt Beat It, Sure Its Bright, My Monitor Is Bright, But That Doesnt Mean Squat If I Cant Read Whats On It, the Removable Battery Is Nice But I Dont Want That, And Removeable Storage Again I Dont Need, The OS Is Absolutely Pants Compared To iOS, Trying To Use It Is Like Trying To Stroke Your Dog With A Sausage And Expecting It Not To Bite You, However I Agree This Is Poor Re-viewing, CNET You Biased Fools, Apple Really Are Onto Your payroll Aren't They,
Shame, I Used To Believe Your Views
anonymous 26 November, 2011 15:20

Come on you write this stuff and then the rest of the world disagrees with you. You guys are out of step why don't you take a holiday or something.
anonymous 28 November, 2011 16:56
galaxy s2 also has voice typing voice memo it reads back messages voice calling. i think someone may have got a free iphone to big it up. i moved from iphone to android as apple has too many limitations. in my opinion the s2 beats the 4s hands down
anonymous 28 November, 2011 17:22
CNet, Do you need more than these to conclude that GS2 is better.
1.NFC (Though it is kept dormant by AT&T)
2.Removable Battery (My friend upgraded the original to a 2800 mah one!)
3.Removable memory
4.Send all types of files via bluetooth
5.It runs flash
6.Connect to Microsoft Exchange (bye bye Black Berry)
7.Sexily slimm
8.Faster processor
9.Install any apps without the app store
10.4.3" Screen
11. Use as a USB drive on any PC(no driver installation required)
anonymous 28 November, 2011 17:29
In my house are both these mobile phones i own the iphone 4s and my wife has the galaxy s2. Both of these phones have voice control both can read back your text messages so iphone does not win the last stage of the review at all. however both our phones are on the same network and when browsing over our wifi network my wifes s2 blows my 4s out of the water. all this you android boys or apple freaks is total bull. the s2 is the better phone and my only regret is i got another iphone. anyone who is posting on this blog saying iphone is better is obviously sick as for making the same error i did. WISH I GOT THE S2
anonymous 29 November, 2011 01:16
M sorry but You mentioned Iphone's Siri but did not mention Samsungs Voice talk and Google Voice so really this wasn't pure neglect whether intentional or not. the only thing the 4S is better is resolution and lens. you also didnt mention flash capabilities... ... why is cnet a respected name in reviewing tech always biased to apple products both the UK and US team ? ? ? do they pass you itunes coupons at cupertino ...
anonymous 29 November, 2011 01:35
all this biased reviews not just this one but from brian tong as well made me un-subscribe from cnettv youtube channel.
anonymous 29 November, 2011 03:19
Please stop watching CNET ... watch Engadget they are not as biased as Cnet. Just so you all know Cnet's US headquaters in California is like walking distance to Apple's Headquarters...
Anyways point being watch Smartphone Envy :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp0HlX1ySGg&feature=relmfu

uhauhauahauhau LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. Iphone win!!!!! Are we in a fantasies ????
anonymous 2 December, 2011 04:40
How did the 4s win??? its quite close but surely the s2 takes it spec wise.
CNET has allways favoured iphones i dont think this will ever change!!!
anonymous 3 December, 2011 06:10
the discussion do not help me at all, i'm still confuse whether to buy i phone 4s or galaxy s2..............
anonymous 5 December, 2011 10:48
Get the 4s if your going to jailbreak it otherwise the s2... Much much much more you can do with a jail broken iPhone but a jailbreak is not for everyone
anonymous 5 December, 2011 10:56
iPhone has loads and loads more devs than Samsung will ever have coz of the jailbreak community.. That makes the iPhone better.. I think that the iPhone is great but that don't make me an apple fan I hate apple for making me wait to jailbreak (MY PHONE) if the iPhone is jailbroken iPhone wins and if not the s2 wins
anonymous 6 December, 2011 20:58
Ha! I think the samsung galaxy s2 is way better! They're both good phones but the competition was hardly fair.
anonymous 6 December, 2011 21:00
No, i don't think the competion was fair and personally think that the samsung galaxy s2 was the better phone. They are both good phones though and i don't own either of them.
anonymous 10 December, 2011 02:29
Since I have yet to see anyone who's a big music junkie, I'd like to add my .02 cents to this. I love both phones and have played with both of them. For me though, the selling factor was being able to remove/add large files or even microSDs. I'm a network support tech during the week, and during the weekends I'm a DJ. I love the fact that I can bring my phone with me to the club or venue that I'm playing that and just plug my phone directly via usb cable to my Pioneer CDJs and play from that. All my music files are 320kbps or damn near close and I have 4 32GB microSDs that I swap back and forth depending on the crowd I'm playing for. I'm sorry but you can't do what I do with any iPhones, not to mention, having to convert an MP3 into an itune is an extreme headache which in turn also degrades the quality of the track. I know most people will not have to deal with a situation like this at all, but I thought I'd just throw it out there.
anonymous 11 December, 2011 05:36
I had a Galaxy S2 and my friend talked me into getting the iPhone 4S. It is a very nice phone, but I miss the fact that I can throw in my SD cards - I also put music on mine and it sure is cheaper than buying the larger iPhone. I totally miss swiping, which Android can do and I like that I'm not a 'captured audience' like you are with Apple products. I have a 32g iPod, which is totally cool, but gosh the iTunes app is a pain sometimes. I actually need to move mine over to another drive and I've been putting it off because it's a hassle. I agree with the comments about mp3 - much more versatile. Alot of my friends swear by Apple, and this iPhone is awesome and fast... but I'm going back to the store tomorrow to reclaim my Galaxy! Cnet, please listen to your people.
anonymous 11 December, 2011 05:40
Oh! And removing the battery is a big deal to me. I travel for business alot and many times can't get to a plug. i buy two or three batteries and charge them up so I can slip in a new one. Don't miss a beat with my business calls!!

according to my sources, google has started developing a siri-like voice client. We can't say how galaxy s2 will be like when it gets android 4.0: blazing fast(mali 400 MP4 GPU, good processor),extra features, better media support.
anonymous 12 December, 2011 18:14
With the least features apple is from the top rated let us wait and see.
anonymous 16 December, 2011 05:32
How did the iPhone win? Its User Interface. Period. When you get past the novelty of buying the phone to actually using it day to day, the User Interface is the only benchmarking factor. This is where Iphone wins.
anonymous 20 December, 2011 06:13
I own both phones. The iPhone 4 stateside and the Samsung Galaxy S2 I bought here in Korea. Let me tell you, even though I've owned an iPhone ever since the first release, the Galaxy S2 has impressed me. I also like the fact that It's easier to customize and you are able to download music and movies straight to the phone instead of thru iTunes and then syncing it to the device. My vote is for the Samsung Galaxy... (My wife is going to call me a traitor...lol)
anonymous 20 December, 2011 09:15
Um... For me Samsung Galaxy S II is so much better than iPhone 4S! Web searching is so much better, SGS2 immediately enlarges text to suit the reader, and iPhone only enlarges text to the widht of the screen. iPhone copied SGS2 with the notification centre. SGS2 also have a similar thing to Siri. iPhone is just a cheat, releasing the same thing except for the desgin and retina display. She also about the market! Many apps on the Android market is are free. Easy texting, no lagging. I can't trust this review because she didn't do a thorough review. And she also forgot about gaming!

I think.......................and this is just an idea..............that the boys & girls of CNET all own iPhones because THAT WAS JUST SILLY!!! :o)
anonymous 28 December, 2011 09:18
Deciding which one is better really comes down to personal preference. For example some people would find a 4.3 inch screen a little too big for the hand while others won't because it gives a better media experience. So let's stop making a fuss on which is better. I have a Galaxy S2 and my brother has a 4S. I've compared them and both has their pros and cons, I would say that it was a draw.
anonymous 28 December, 2011 16:21
I have been using apple's products for years, but after I tried to switch to SII then I doubt that I could go back to iphone anymore.
anonymous 2 January, 2012 13:25
SERIOUSLY, Iphone wins in the software round??? the apple ios doesnt even support adobe flash, the s2 has a pull down menu bar which shows all messages and notifications how is a third party app that helps to message more convinient? ive had an iphone 4 and after changing to an s2 i dont think im changing back ever. by the way have u even tried an s2?
anonymous 5 January, 2012 18:26
this is so seriously stupid, I sold my 4s to get a s2 because iPhone are actually crap at a high price, just cause people think the brand apple is good its not. plus you said that android is crap and hard to use, unless your a real dummy then you can use android plus the market is easier to use then the app store as i have used both. i used to like cnet but after this article good buy because none of your crap makes sense
anonymous 6 January, 2012 15:19
S2 Features are better then 4s .Still S2 is better in my opinion
anonymous 13 January, 2012 18:47
my friends had Iphone 4s, he regrets buying it, my cousin had Iphone 4s he regrets buying it, my sister had and iphone 4s, she regrets buying it, I had Samsung Galaxy S2.....I didn't regret buying it.
Samsung shouldn't even be compared to Apple and i mean it because I had and Iphone and it kept crashing, Galaxy, no problemo. Siri, "What was that again?"
"Sorry, something's gone wrong. "
"Sorry, I didn't get that."
I am getting quiet annoyed with this.
People talking about Iphone 4s is better, just look at the price of the phones, Iphone 4s are have a great design built with very good materials....that is it.
anonymous 15 January, 2012 12:54
whaaaaat? samsung galaxy s2 is a wonder to use, iPhone dosent stand a chance compared to it!
anonymous 16 January, 2012 05:47
siri is long time with galaxy S2 and the multi tasking of S2 is good. plus tou can watch online using the flash player .
anonymous 17 January, 2012 05:48
IPhone wins? How much did Apple pay you to make them the winner? Ami correct? Isn't Iphone 4 and 4S 3G phones and the Galaxy is clearly 4G. Why was that not mentioned. Also the Galaxy has a dual core processor running at 1.5 ghz and the Iphone also has a dual core processor running sugnificantly slower. Why were these things not mentioned? Also, on you tube, you can watch both phones being dropped on the floor and the Iphone glass breaks where the Galaxy doesn't. Your article was clearky biased. Jim

Obscurantism is key here! a blasé, vague and generalist approach to evaluation, not accounting for 90% of the actually important differences. the four tests are nonsensical, based on opinion rather than actual testing.
the S2 wins hands down! a far superior hardware platform, sporting a far superior OS that does not lock you into Apples awful licensing regime. Even apples co founder Steve Wozniak agrees.
anonymous 24 January, 2012 04:36
to all u dum asses on here the SGS2 is not faster then the iPhone look up the specs b4 u start speaking stupid
anonymous 25 January, 2012 06:06
....I looked up the specs and it says that Iphone 4S has a 1.0 Ghz A5 processor while SGS2 has a 1.2 Ghz processor.... u mad bro?
Late8 26 January, 2012 09:44
OK I have been using the S2 For a month and although its a decent phone - a lot of things let it down. The biggest is battery life. Its never mentioned in reviews but battery is poor- period. Before anyone says "shut down this" "uninstall that" "use a battery app" - you shouldn't have to !
You have to be constantly going to task manager and closing down apps or turning off things like GPS and WiFi to save juice - not acceptable and not the same on the iPhone. The best you can get is about a day or so virtually unused with sync. The worse 2-4 hours playing games or using GPS.
Next is heat - the S2 gets very hot when using high amounts of CPU (as well as lots of battery in the process). Although it apparently isn't a problem it does feel scary hot sometimes.
The feel of the S2 is cheap. The front isn't bad, but its lightness and plastic body just feels cheap compared to the metal and glass of the iPhone.
Kies software for syncing music, photos and updates etc is crap - nothing else to say, just don't use it. A least iTunes works! Drag and drop etc instead.
I too would say overall its fair to say both are good phones - but iPhone "just works" and for a lot of people thats a good thing. No messing with software updates etc or plethora of settings to get it just right.
Needless to say after the S2 my next phone wont be android.
Good if your a Geek and like to fiddle with things- bad if you want a device that just works for you.
anonymous 29 January, 2012 06:11
It's been 5 months now and I'm not getting bored using my SGS2. The iphone 4s is a way too expensive and yet the specs are almost equal to SGS2 considering that its a new phone. The Samsung galaxy s2 really wins this competition. Until a new phone will be release like the iphone5 and Samsung Galaxy S2. My s2 works just well. If you have problems with battery life, you'll need to use an app to prolong the battery life or upgrade your android os that fixes the battery life. It's my first smartphone. Before I have purchased it, I have compared the specs between s2, iphone4, 4s. S2 is really the winner of this competition. I will be upgrading my phone two years from now. By that then, phones are getting smarter. I will be choosing the best specs would it be samsung apple Lg black berry or etc.
anonymous 29 January, 2012 11:39
Doesn't anyone know of a simple i4s versus sgs2 poll? I'd like to see the outcome of a simple vote, either/or?
anonymous 29 January, 2012 23:08
Hey Mr. Late8, my S2's battery last for 26 hours. It's not on a standy mode. I've been playing asphalt 6 on it. iphone 4s lacks the art of customization. The iphone 4s is indeed a new phone. However, it doesn't match the samsung galaxy s2. I've been using a lot of computers and iphone 4s just limits two three computers. Itunes isn't cool. A lot of people will agree to that. Don't just limit your ideas in your area. I'm not even a samsung. S2 cheap you say? You better mean, the price is just right compared to iphone 4s which is overpriced and yet its feature doesn't match the powerful s2. Siri is just ridiculous to use. I heard that if you will charge your iphone 55,000 times, the battery more or like damaged. You see, if you will buy iphone and when battery is damaged, you can't replace the battery. When battery is damaged, then your iphone is junk and contributes garbage in the world unlike s2 you can replace your battery and you can bring an extra battery if you are a smartphone heavy gamer. You should try to watch the drop test in youtube and you will see the outcome of your famous iphone.
anonymous 29 January, 2012 23:13
The battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S II Global phone provides up to 610 hours on 3G standby time, 710 hours on 2G, as well as 8 hours 40 min on talk time on 3G and talk time of 18 hours and 20 min max on 2G and around 5 to 6 hours internet time. The iPhone 4S offers 200 hours on standby on 3G and talk time is 8 hours on 3G, 14 hours on 2G GSM, if you use the internet you can expect 9 hours max on Wi-Fi and up to 6 hours on 3G. So the SGS2 is better here.
anonymous 1 February, 2012 16:14
This is the ******** most overly basic under baked bias review ever. As if ppl who go for sgs2 only care about screen size. how patronising!
anonymous 9 February, 2012 21:02
sgs2 rocks iphone killer
anonymous 12 February, 2012 07:38
Galaxy S2 FTW!!!!
anonymous 12 February, 2012 08:51
i own a samsung tablet and iphone 4s. so you can say i have the best of both. it all comes down to personal taste. just accept our differences and move on.
anonymous 13 February, 2012 15:46
It won on siri?! Yeah... it's not lke the S2 has ANYTHING like that!
anonymous 20 February, 2012 17:57
S2 win browser wise S2 is a lot better the iphone
anonymous 20 February, 2012 17:58

anonymous 5 March, 2012 10:09
I have both Apple iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S-II and i find Samsung Galaxy S-II is far much better than iPhone. With Samsung Galaxy S-II i feel i have my laptop along with me..too easy to handle and operate...even lookswise is Samsung Galaxy S-II much better.
anonymous 18 March, 2012 14:31
n0w that the s2 has the update 0n ICS... I think it is a big leap 0n this c0mparis0n...
anonymous 22 March, 2012 21:25
Having played with both phones for anyone with any desire to do lots instead of what the original manufacturers want you to do...the Samsung Galaxy S2 is by far the winner. Out of the box it does more the the iphone as it has more tech and more apps. Is the interface poor...no.
I have an iPod and Itunes is good but not a reason to buy a phone. Android is likely to exceed the Apple IOS development....
anonymous 28 March, 2012 21:25
well after reading most of the comments on here i still non the wiser on witch phone to get lol
anonymous 28 March, 2012 21:41

calm down people you sound like children it doesnt matter what cnet thinks it matters what you think , if you like the s2 buy it if you like the 4s buy it i onw an iPhone and my brother owns the s2 and i think its a draw
anonymous 7 April, 2012 13:55
the SII clear winner had a iphone4s traded for the sII and love it
anonymous 12 April, 2012 20:34
hmmm, still not sure whether to move to the Samsung s2 or stay with Apple? what do you think guys?.....
anonymous 18 April, 2012 22:43
Apple devices are designed for simple people! They are working nice and smooth because everything is restricted therefore you can't break them. Also Idevices are very expensive and people buy them because they want to show their money.
Android phones are for adults there are no restrictions you can edit and change everything.
There always be fans of Iphone and fans of Android.
Especially if you spent £600 you would't admit that you spent it wrong.
anonymous 19 April, 2012 19:30
my friend has the iphone 4s and i was really considering getting it, i used it a few time and found it frustrating, i found it like a mini i-mac, the browser program was annoying and the icon's although understandable were not very clear, her contract costs £36 p/m and costed £100 for the phone, my galaxy costs £23 p/m and the phone is free and they are both from three, we have basically the same phone contract, the problem is that apple has put such a high price on the phone that it make the contract cost much more, considering that they are both top of the line phones with both good and bad points but still considered close to the same level there i a rather large £150 - £200 price difference that is more in the galaxy S2 ball court,
all though it is probably considered "cooler" to own an iphone, the S2 is more practical and faster and much better with 3G than the iphone, both are matched on camera and the iphone weighs more because it's interested in looks, although the iphone is more pocket sized it brings down the screen size and makes the screen far smaller than the S2, the S2 i better for movies and the iphone 4s has no flash player, although it does manage to play youtube videos
the main thing that made me choose the S2 over the iphone is the fact that i would have to pay for my music and the main thing i want my phone for is to play my music and i already bought all my music off amazon and would not pay for the same songs from itunes at £1 each
anonymous 23 April, 2012 09:12
Sgs2 also has voice commands so how can you make iphone win on that fact you tards learn to know what your talking about before you chat your poop
anonymous 29 April, 2012 10:45
I have an iPhone 4s. I find it unintuitive to use, The battery life is rubbish and you can't have a spare. The signal strength is poor due to bad aerial design. You need to close apps to stop then sucking power from the phone. How is pressing the home key twice to call up the task manger and then touching and holding the icon to close them intuitive. The predictive spell check drives me nuts. It suggests words and replaces the word you have typed unless you spot it and hit the tinny x to stop it. You will often read back what you typed and can't make sense of any of it. Friends have got the S2 and I wish I had one too.
anonymous 29 April, 2012 11:00
Almost forgot the iPhone features no flash support for web pages meaning many websites are unavailable. Also no SD card slot so you are stuck with whatever memory size you bought. Lastly the screen is easy to scratch so by the time you've put it in a case its like a brick.
sbowesuk 4 May, 2012 21:39
Cnet are a complete joke when it comes to promoting and favouring Apple products. They don't even care to hide their bias. If cnet pitted a turd with an Apple logo up against the S2, cnet would declare the turd a work of art and announce it the winner. I'm not even kidding.
