Android alert! Eagle-eyed phone fan Mauricio Reyes got a surprise when he spotted a poster advertising 3 on Oxford Street, showing the Nokia 5230 and X6 apparently rocking the Android interface.
Don't get too excited though: it's clearly a snafu by a dozy designer. Just this month, Nokia officially nixed suggestions it would employ Google's operating system. Instead, the Finnish company is sticking with the Symbian OS, and MeeGo, jointly developed with Intel.
Tell us your thoughts, phoneketeers: is Nokia on the right track? The company's profits plunged a hefty 40 per cent in the second quarter of this year. Meanwhile premium phones such as the iPhone are earning a healthy profit for the likes of Apple.
Perhaps it's time Nokia stopped spending money on developing its own operating systems, and got involved with open source OS Android. With Android gaining traction in the US, it could be a shrewd move.

Very good idea, in my opinion. I think that Nokia, after coming out with the N97, did not get the attention that Android phones and the iPhone had. So they should introduce a new phone like the N97 but with a better operating system, as the fact is that Nokia phones seem to have top-notch hardware, but the laggy and finger-hating OS put them behind. The truth is that it should be an improvement on the phones they already have, or a complete redesign of the product range, as the Symbian OS is obsolete against the likes of Android.

Nokia make very good phones but the Ovi store has damaged the good name.
It does not surprise me in the slightest Nokia's profits are dropping so much.
Ovi's total disregard for customers have a lot to answer for.

This is just the Spotify app for symbian.. Has nothing to do with Android.. :O Can post here a screenshot of my N97 with Spotify running.. Looks the same.. False alarm.. Sorry to spoil it..

@Jaro Ostrihon: I'm not so sure it is...note the taskbar at the top... that's very androidish to me... unless of course that's also the n97 notification bar :P

That's actually a good point.. The task bar is an Android one.. Still.. What you can see there are clearly 2 Symbian devices.. And not upcoming ones, well-known ones.. I think they were trying to promote Spotify, as you can get it for a half a year with a contract with 3 now, and they've just copied the screenshots from an Android device.. The taskbar is not on the Symbian version.. That's true.. There's actually a new version of Spotify for Symbian.. It reads now the songs from the device as well, and you can star songs, and send msgs out ro the app.. Just found out now..

I've had a Nokia 5800 for about a year now and although the phone is a great alternative to the iPhone, the operating system sucks. If it had Android instead of Symbian, I would be so overjoyed. They're definitely going the wrong way with Symbian and MeeGo. They'll probably end up doing a U-turn when they realise their plan won't work.

Sure, that's just I want! A power hungry cut down version of Linux that runs in VM!
You'd be lucky if Android even got going on that hardware, hog that it is.
As for Symbian being 'obsolete' against Android, go and tell me why, Andy. Specifically.
Hint: Don't mention the UI because that's not actually the OS.

Shut up Meg! ... I mean Mark!

Nokia = Awesome hardware
Android = Awesome OS
Nokia + Android = Epic Win!

I really liked Symbian on non-touchscreen Nokias, but I don't like it at all on their touchscreen phones. I prefer Android.
