Android is 5 years old today: Here's how it all began

Android is five years old today -- happy birthday Android, have a cake! But how did our favourite green robot get started on his journey to mobile industry domination?

Five years ago, on 5 November 2007, the newly formed Open Handset Alliance unveiled Android -- an open-source operating system for mobile phones.

Although Google is Android's auteur, 34 corporations including T-Mobile, HTC, Motorola and Qualcomm formed part of the Alliance. The stated goal was "fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers are far better user experience than much of what is available on today's platforms".

A noble aim, but reading between the lines Android's real target was operating systems like Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian -- all of which were, to put it delicately, about as much fun to use as putting a wasps' nest down your trousers.

Android's ascension to glory has been incredible to behold (it certainly polished off those three rivals mentioned above), but at the time spectators were understandably cautious.

"I don't think it'll be a success," said ex-CNETeer Rory Reid, speaking on the CNET UK podcast in 2007. "Open-source phones have been tried before."

Formerly-of-this-parish Nate Lanxon offered an impressive bit of foresight, however, saying in the same podcast Android was "basically an attack on Microsoft in the future". Microsoft took longer to get its own smart phone-centric operating system off the ground, and now Windows Phone is racing to catch up to Android's years-long head start.

It was a little over a year before the first Android phone arrived, during which time an incredible amount of hype swirled, and people wondered whether Android would have the power to overtake the recently unveiled iPhone.

The T-Mobile G1 didn't quite manage to topple Apple's effort, but impressed us nonetheless -- we praised the physical keyboard and the Android Market (now Google Play), which let you easily add extra apps to your phone.

HTC was responsible for pushing Android into the limelight, with popular phones such as the HTC Desire putting Android into the hands of many more shoppers. Last year's Samsung Galaxy S2 was another mega-hit, and paved the way for this year's equally impressive Galaxy S3.

Android has come a long way in five years, and shows no signs of slowing. The last Android device we reviewed was the Google Nexus 4 -- likely to go down in history as one of the most important smart phones ever, thanks to its industry-rocking £239 price tag.

Google Nexus 4

The Nexus 4 has Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the very latest edition that introduces camera wizardry-app Photo Sphere and goodies like gesture typing.

Looking back at the T-Mobile G1, I'm amazed at how far Android has come -- will we be celebrating its 10th birthday in 2017, or will it be confined to the annals of tech history by then? Party down in the comments or celebrate on our Facebook wall.

Here Droidy's been 'shopped into an oil painting from C.M Coolidge's famous 'Dogs Playing Poker' series. Bonus points to Marc Crane for squishing in the CNET team. Can you spot us?

Androids success is down to ripping off iOS.

No iOS = No android

JohnsonDion1's avatar

JohnsonDion1 5 November, 2012 12:05

I think android is a great idea but I think the only thing holding it back is that it has to work on so many different phones, meaning that app developers have to make apps that work across all these phones. Meaning your top of the line S3 will have the exact same app as that used on a cheap Huawei phone.

Oh by the way I have a iPhone 4 and I love it, would never go over to android.

pfft ripping of ios? u blind ? android is a class of its own hasn't copied anything i think you find ios is copying android

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 12:53

Ryan
iOS came before android
One of androids main creators was on the board at apple before android was released, then left about a month before the official release of android
iOS doesn't copy android. They get all of their updates and new "creations" from jail breakers.

This early version looks a lot easier to use than the current android phone I have

For all of the fanboys out there.... Get real...

Android has parts of iOS "features", some would say that it is an undeniably required feature of a phone of today.

You think the iPhone was the first phone with slide to unlock, NO, apps? NO, touchscreen? NO.

I'm not saying that Android or Samsung or other company is innocent, but do not banter on about iOS's innovation or that Android stole from them. As Apple are certainly no different

It seems far too difficult for people to think that if you like an iphone then buy an iphone, if you like Android then buy an S3 or Nexus 4, the flaming doesn't need to come into it. It's called freedom of choice people!

anonymous 5 November, 2012 13:03

To that guy that said that the iPhone is copying off of android... DO YOUR HOMEWORK.. cause technically the iPhone and iOS came BEFORE the droid was even released.. So yeah.. Droid is DEFINITELY copying from iOS

To those that say android copied iphone, stop deluding yourselves you bunch of self lacking , i- slaves. Here are the facts -Five years ago, on 5 November 2007, the newly formed Open Handset Alliance unveiled Android -- an open-source operating system for mobile phones.
The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. So a little intellectualism will tell you it would be impossible for android to copy iphone in only 4 or so months.

anonymous 5 November, 2012 13:18

Crazy comments - what does it matter if the iPhone was around before Android? How does that stop Apple copying Android ideas?

iOs 6 has not been around as long as Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, yet features such as the similar notification bar, panoramic camera function, which were on ICS are now on iOs...

The point here is that, yes Android and Apple may have copied each others' ideas but at present, Android is innovating while iOs is falling way behind.

Hahaha all the bickering is awesome, apple copied android, android copied apple who cares, the fact is that android is miles ahead of apple crap, apple just can't keep up the tech with android, I used to be and iphone user and then I saw the light, iphone compared to android is plain, boring and very basic, the new iphone 5 can't even do half of the simplest tasks that android can do, so to all you apple fans you're the ones missing out and being conned so you can slate android as much as you want we don't care, love you loads xxx

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 13:32

well.. I have android, galaxy s3, the quad core, but I can say that IOS is faster :)
IOS is native, android is bytecode... but IOS is faster.. this "faster" you can't notice :) so.. android is comming with more free apps and allows developers to write applications more easy..

anonymous 5 November, 2012 13:58

JohnsonDion1 5 November, 2012 12:05

Completely wrong. You obviously have never had an android phone because I've had several and app developers actually create different apps for different phones. Especially since ICS the apps have become so slick now and JB is taking them way past iOS in terms of their interface.

For everyone saying that Android copied iOS. They did not as the source code from both came from Unix. So technically they both copied code from Unix and it evolved from there, end of story...Some thick people on here. Do you really think Apple came up with completely new radical code from nowhere. Give me a break.

Everyone seems to forget that smartphones existed well *before* IOS/Android. Windows Mobile, Palm OS (which had icons just like IOS/Android), Symbian (hey, didn't that have widgets?) and Maemo all came out **years** before Android or IOS. IOS is just improvements based on windows/symbian based OSes, Android is pretty much improvements on all of those OSes. Have some perspective people...

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 14:10

Well this all feels warm and fuzzy doesn't it.
It appears to be true that iOS was unveiled on 29th June 2007 and Android was unveiled on 5th November 2007. I don't see how this means that Android copied iOS. It seem that Apple fans are just unhappy that Android is doing better than Apple. But I have to say that Android in its previous versions was a little boring. I had a HTC Hero for a short while, I waited and got an iPhone 4 after that. It was a really good phone but after two years it just became a little boring.
I have a Samsung S3 now, it's a great phone. Does all my iPhone did and more.

I personally think that Apple have copied parts of Android, Android is quite different from Android. People seem to be missing the mark on the whole Android copying thing. Apple are blaming Samsung for copying the iPhone not Android copying iOS. I suppose it may come down to who came first. Each side will always have it's own followers, who will defend it to the end, that's the way when you have two popular things like this. It just seems that Apples follows are more devout or Appligious if you will ( The Appleigion ).

Well thats my comment, think of it what you will.

android was prereleasing roms for android phones way before the iphone was even announced... the first official version of android was released after the iphone but neither had stolen anything from the other... since android has kept their desktop layout and enhanced their app tray from the one row side scroll bar shown in the video above to what you see now which is more ios like. steve jobs claimed that android was a deliberate copy but it wasn't essentialy they were birthed at the same time. today android is the clear innovator which is evident in apps like photosphere and using nfc technology. in everyway android is better than the iphone

I like how the article didn't mention apple or iOS once, but the fanboys can't help themselves but to comment.

Are you people so invested in your technology choices that you seek out android articles so you can spam the comments? How sad your lives must be.

I had a first gen iphone and an iphone 3, I loved them both, then I switched when the GS2 came out because I was sick of itunes bullshit. Been on cyanogenmod releases ever since and I love my phone! It doesn't really matter which phone you have, just find what you like and enjoy it, no reason to try and devalue someone elses!

So, yep, ANOTHER article's comments page full of iOS fans criticising Android using out of date, cliched myths, have of which were true once, a long time ago, but no longer are, and the other half have never been true. It's been like this, just ignorant and largely untrue attacks on the Android OS, in most articles now, ever since the Nexus 7 really, but even worse after the disappointments of the iPhone 5, iPad 4, and iPad mini, and outstanding announcements from Google regarding their Nexus devices and Android 4.2.

It's just getting pathetic now.

5 years of basically copying iOS - nice going!

Initially copying it and then making it much, much better and easier to use. Well done Google!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 17:12

For people saying they ripped off ios, all Google did is take their Os and transfer it to Touchscreen. Blackberry tried to do the same but failed

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 18:16

First ios is bsd kernal and an intel atom processor that uses less voltage, EVERY OS has a KERNEL, windows has one, ubuntu has one, I'm sure that ANDROID does not use the same kernel... So it did not copy it ios.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 18:19

To the people who say Android is copying iOS this is what I have to say. Innovation creates new innovation in other areas. What if only one type of light-bulb was ever invented and never improved on. Should we leave new innovation solely up to the company that originally created it. I don't think so.

You people are funny. iOS copied this and Android copied that. They all copied Windows and MacOs with a slap of linux in there. People wanted Windows and Mac PC functionality in mobile setting. I think they both excelled in the manner. I like Android because I can pretty do whatever I want to the phone and have access to the store to buy things. Apple, not so much. Android doesn't keep me tied down to how the cell network wants me to use my phone. Apple does (one example tethering and Facetime on unlimited data plans). Apple is a highly polished you take what they feed you phone, being a technical person I like Android and being able to control some features.

Forget android and IOS he just put his friends phone number and address on F'n YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 20:53

Android was a Google backed development well before iOS was released. Something apple fanbois like to ignore.

Regardless of what came first Android is setting the bar in functionality and UI look and feel. iOS is just playing catch-up and scared of changing their grid of icons for fear of loosing their core audience. Simplicity is a good design goal that Apple adheres to, but iOS isn't simple, iOS is just boring. Maybe that is why Android has 75% market share.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 5 November, 2012 21:26

Bad idea CNET, saying party down in the comments, in an android (or apple) related article. Or any article. Always comes down to this :-\

Well frickin' said. People can't just enjoy what they have, but to deliberately attempt to upset others!

But you just copied a karmatic principal with your statement while I'm making a Buddhistic one. Buddhism was released first. So I'm more right than you even though they're both the same fuckin' agreeable statement.

If Android copied iOS then it would be rubbish. It isn't. It really is that simple.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 6 November, 2012 00:43

Android is nothing like ios. We have tons of customization features. We can install an entire operating system on our phones like linux. We don't need to jailbreak. The launchers you can download from the play store make it look like ios, not the actuall stock os that comes with android. Google doesnt even make the launchers, a third party dev does.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 6 November, 2012 00:57

IOS...
Seriously?!
Keep on crying fanboys.
Android is whipping Apples ass.
Linux vs. Apple.
No contest.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 6 November, 2012 00:59

So if Android copied iOS, why has android had a pull-down notification bar for the last couple years and yet iOS just introduced it in recent updates. It seems iOS likes copying Android just as much as people claim Android is copying iOS.

Some hilarious comments. It's software, it's not a competition! Apple might be competing with Google but you don't work for either of those companies so why do you care? Grow up and choose what's best for you without giving these companies a bl*wjob if you can.

Apples yanksters must be pulling their hair out with the success of Android. Why is it that APlle wanted to ban all Android phones from Samsung in the USA. All because of their success. Android rules!,Galaxy SIIII wipes the floor with any Iphone. All you americans can say what you like but Android came first! Apple have been ripping off everyone for years, taking others ideas etc its just human nature. Samsung dont go crying like little byatches though about it.

Why all the hostility.. Its just a system that runs on a phone.. Who cares who copied who.. Stick to the system you like.. Don't say ones better then the other.. Fact is they aren't., one has better things then the other.. And vice versa

Enough of ios is better, or android is better.. It's really becoming a joke..

I hope another system comes out and wipes both of em away...

People will argue about anything on the internet won't they? The iPhone is a groundbreaking phone that suits the usual consumer, i personally think the apps are better on the Apple phone and it's very easy to use. Overpriced though!
I'm personally an android user as i like not being tired to apples whims and jellybean is a wonderfully open and customisable operating system and ive been able to update my HTC Desire in a way that would have been much harder to do on an iPhone.
Why do fanbois bother having these stupid arguments as their hopefully more to life than just supporting your 'team'. We should all be happy that technology is at a time when it's getting interesting and affordable.

I had the G1 on release day and had it for all of 6 months before abandoning it and T-Mobile at the time to get a first gen iPhone and then every iPhone up until the 4S.
However it was when the iPhone 5 was released that I realised how i wasn't happy with the way iPhone was progressing (very little innovation) and so have headed back to Android and got the Galaxy S3 LTE a phone far better in my opinion than the iPhone 5.
I've also in the meantime had a Windows Phone -- not happy about not getting the upgrade as that needs to be upgraded. A Palm Pre Plus -- has to be one of the best operating systems on the time. And several Blackberry phones -- that is a company that has lost it's way.

anonymous's avatar

anonymous 22 November, 2012 15:35

Your arguing fan boys are all idiots, iOS and Android all copied Symbian in the first place and both pinched a load of tech from Microsoft/Nokia just to get started. Why dont you stop arguing and all just get together and have one big love in. Its the only way your all going to get laid!

Facts are these, the Apple hardware is without doubt the best and the Android software is without doubt the best. I'd love an iphone that runs Jelly Bean. I love my GS3 and wouldn't change it for an iOS device but both have their merits!

no doubt android changed its target competitor after the success of the iphone and then become more iphone like. it was originally aimed at blackberry, nokia smartphones and windows. The orginal implementations had keyboards for f*sake. How many android phones have keyboards now? It was easy to do but they would acknowledge the copied the iphone. That is why samsung lost in california they copied too closely and it was google who said they did.

The simple facts are this. Google hires developers while Apple hires designers. Everyone rants and raves about how Apple is so aesthetically pleasing, well it's because they have a bunch of art students designing the look of their products. Google is technologically advance because they have software developers and engineers thinking up new and innovative features and spend months programming while apple sits at their white boards and colors and draws. So yes it only makes sense that apple is falling behind in innovation. Until they spend as much time programming as they do designing cases they will always play second fiddle to android.
