Android fans there has been a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC, & we now expect it to be available mid-Sep. Apologies
If you're an Orange HTC Desire owner waiting with bated breath for your update to Android 2.2, you'll have to wait a little longer. There's been a a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC that will slow down the update, said Orange in a tweet today. We can expect the update in mid-September, rather than the imminent update that we expected.
HTC released the official update at the beginning of August, but networks have to test the new version before they unleash it on the world. The delay isn't due to Orange adding their own custom gubbins to the operating system, said Orange. Updates to Desires on other networks, such as Vodafone, have already begun.
Previously, HTC Hero owners on Orange were on tenterhooks waiting for the update to Android 2.1 update to make it to their phones. HTC apologised after Orange Hero owners had to wait over a month for their refresh, due to lengthy testing on Orange's huge European network.
We drooled over the Froyo update because of its support for multiple Google Apps accounts and Flash Player 10.1, among other improvements. Read our full Android 2.2 review for all the gory details.

Errr... I'm confused. I've got an HTC Desire on Orange and got the 2.2 update a couple of weeks ago (through System>Check for updates).
Anonymous 27 August, 2010 18:35
You likely got it from caphonewarehouse or were lucky enough to have an unbranded desire, meaning your phone will automatically pick up the update from htc themselves and not the providers. You can bet orange are gonna cram 2.2 full of bloatware so i might just root now and apply the update

Yup got my Desire from mobiles.co.uk (Carphone Warehouse) and it hasn't got any Orange branding. Just a shame it is on the crappy Orange 3G network.

Oi Conor, your lying your backside off! HTC shipped it over a month ago and this is nothing but a move by Orange (and T-Mobile your new other half who are refusing to ship it till Sept) to delay support for your users. 3 and O2 shipped it almost a month ago, and guess what? they got it off HTC also. The only delay is pathetic lacklustre support showing the companies utter incompetence and loathing to support it's customers who are paying for a premium product.
Quite frankly, if this is the level of support that Orange/T-Mobile are going to provide than I would recommend to everyone to keep well away from them. I will also once my contracts up, as soon as the better I hope due to this level of support.

i was told this last night by an orange rep, who after an hour, couldnt get my mms working. He also told me that Orange will be releasing their version with all the bloatware demos. This will no doubt be the reason for the delay. Rather than send out the version that everyone wants ( no crap ), they are making everyone wait for the demos that no one plays and cant delete off their phones???
Anonymous 27 August, 2010 22:21
Well its better than LG who have decided that they are not going to update their handsets to the lateset android .... not impressed, a 2month old phone with an outdated droid platform!

Just another example of how customers are lied to........
"Yeah it will be out Friday.........were all just having training on it..........Yeah you will get a text........."
Let me translate this for you........."Just get off my phone line so i can carry on talking to my mates and update my status on facebook"

To be honest I came from Vodafone and went on Orange....what a mistake I can never get a good signal 3g signal also crap and now a delay in the update with Orange lying to me. I will be def ending this contract when I can u fail Orange

It's only because Orange hack the phone's software to put their own icons on it & stuff. Icons which cost to use. No other network does it. Its annoying. Their technical department are probably having trouble hacking it or something. LEAVE THE PHONE'S ALONE, ORANGE!!!!!!!!

no sh*t sherlock, just root your phone if you're so dismayed.
I know loads of people who seem to get worse signal when switching to Orange, personally I seem to reap the benefit of the largest 3G network in the country :)
I'm surprised this guy doesn't have to shower constantly if he keeps spraying this much bull, boo Mr. Orange.

Nyadach, sorry, you're wrong. Branded O2 Desire's are still waiting for the update, just like on Orange. I know, I checked about 2 seconds ago. Rumours abound that we'll get it on 6th September. Fingers crossed.

That why I will never buy a branded phone ever again, when I went to upgrade my blackberry to a Galaxy S in Phones4U they said they had the phone but wasn't able to give it to me because it wasn't branded by Orange. I got pissed off after being sat in there for 45mins while they faffed around then went to Carphone Warehouse and got my Galaxy S in 5mins.
My girlfriend got her phone update for her HTC Desire a last month (not that she noticed, she thought something was wrong when a icon changed colour and a few apps disappeared)

guys you dont need to "root" your phone to get 2.2. You just need to "debrand" your phone using a goldcard. Google it and you'll find loads of step-by-step guides of how to do this. As long as you read it carefully it's quite simple. I had a desire from t-mob but couldnt wait any longer for them to push froyo out so I debranded it last week. Now I have official HTC 2.2. on my phone.
Anonymous 30 August, 2010 22:01
@christopher Keightley I tried to de brand my phone over the weekend managed to get the orange software off of it but world not download the 2.2 software or up update to 2.2 then I put a custom rom on the phone and it locked it so have you got a orange locked phone if so could you point me in the direction of the info you used I have come across from windows mobile and I used custom roms before but there seems to be something orange do to there branded locked phones that stops us from doing this.

Poor effort Orange.

predictable, whenever any company... especially mobile phone providers, give you a release date, add a month or two and then you can expect it
Anonymous 3 September, 2010 10:06
Nyadach - you are incorrect in saying that O2 have released Froyo to its HTC Desire customers..... we are still waiting for the update. The only way for O2 customers to get Froyo is to debrand the phone and get the HTC version. O2 still have not specified a date for the update release.
Please get your facts right.

Well my Tattoo does not work properly when connected to the 3g network, was told this was a known issue with the Desire and Tattoo. Was told not to worry as there is going to be an update to 2.2 for both desire and Tattoo in a couple of weeks. Works fine on HSPDA and QPRS just not 3g.

Are you sure? what is the source of the news?? Can you give us a bit more detail on it
Anonymous 12 September, 2010 19:24
why don't you "anonymous" upload the update from you phone (saved on the sd card after download) for us that can't get the update ? It's possible ? Thank You !
Anonymous 13 September, 2010 06:44
Hi I'm on orange. Got My Desire from Carphone Warehouse unlocked August 14th with 2.2 Android already installed.
Confused on the comments
Anonymous 13 September, 2010 12:45
The source of the 2.2 update for both Desire and Tattoo was the Orange Networks Team as my 3g problem had been exscalated to them
Anonymous 13 September, 2010 12:46
The source of my information regarding the Desire/Tattoo 2.2 update was Orange Networks Team, my 3g problem had been escalated to them
Anonymous 14 September, 2010 11:57
Hey, Orange. How about you take all your rubbish out so we can get a normal build, on time? Otherwise next time, I'll just go to another network! Simples.
Anonymous 15 September, 2010 18:39
SO it's now 15th September (I make that "MID SEPTEMBER" eh?) - and still no sign of the Orange Desire 2.2 upgrade ?? - anybody else got any news??
Anonymous 16 September, 2010 09:14
tbh the delay is not that bad, compared to 2.1 for the hero. I was expecting that one at the end of last year.. its now rooted with 2.2 and I'm happy. android is open source, so at least there is the option.
Anonymous 16 September, 2010 15:18
It's mid-September now. Where's our update?
Anonymous 17 September, 2010 20:25
just spoke to orange and now there are saying its delayed again for at least another week to 10 days and of course blaming htc...i told him i didnt believe him and orange are putting all there junk on it...just taking the p**s now, so not happy with orange!
Anonymous 19 September, 2010 08:39

stub77 19 September, 2010 08:42
i got 2.2 just now
Anonymous 21 September, 2010 15:13
I'm on Orange, no update for me, how did you get it?
Anonymous 21 September, 2010 19:07
Got mine :D with a branded Orange handset
Anonymous 22 September, 2010 09:29
Nothing here yet. I guess they can't roll it out to all users at the same time otherwise their servers and customer support lines would be swamped. How does Orange phase the rollout and over how long?
