Android 2.1 roll-out for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has begun

Halloween wasn't just a day when the ghosts and ghouls came out to play -- Sony Ericsson finally started rolling out its long-awaited Android 2.1 upgrade for the Xperia X10 phones.

After several delays, Sony Ericsson confirmed that Android 2.1 updates for the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro started yesterday evening. The very first updates hit the Nordic countries on Sunday evening.

Xperia X10 owners in the UK should receive Android 2.1 at some point during November. It appears the company has already been working with the mobile networks to make sure network-specific updates will come out this month. The different versions need separate approvals, which is why the roll-out is phased. Click here for more information.

"The software update will be done in a phased roll-out which means that different 'kits' get the update at different times. This is to secure quality in all networks and countries. So don't get paranoid if your phone isn't updated in the very first days - it will come," Sony Ericsson confirmed.

Your Xperia X10 should automatically notify you when the update is ready for your specific software version, and you will be guided to perform the update using the PC Companion software you should have received when you bought the handset.

"In that process, because of this being a big update, you will also be guided through some steps to be able to backup personal data before the update and then restore it when the update is finished," the company added.

As well as the upgrade to Android 2.1, the update will give X10 owners HD video-recording with continuous autofocus, a new backup and restore application, and five home screens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders. There's also a social phonebook included, which syncs your contacts' profile photos from Facebook and shows when your friends are online.

Sony Ericsson must be under the impression that it's still March 2010.

This is a real lesson for anybody considering buying SE... even your updates will be six months out of date before they are even anounced.

Sucks if you got this expensive phone on contract. If you'd bought an Orange Sanfransisco (or any other budget Android) you would have had the 2.1 and saved a great deal of money.
