In something of an admission that it's been looking at the consumer mobile market all wrong, Microsoft has announced it's completely rebranding its mobile offerings as 'Windows Phone'.
From now on, Windows Phone will be the umbrella term for all things Windows Mobile, including the brand-new WinMo operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today. Continue reading...
Tattu TS500: Dual-SIM phone two-times you
With Valentine's Day just gone, Tattu Mobile is about to make lotharios' lives easier with the TS500 dual-SIM multimedia mobile phone.
To use the phone, you dial as normal then choose which of the two SIM you want to place the call. Why would a phone capable of making and receiving calls from two SIMs be useful? Perhaps you have one for work and one for home, or one for the wife and one for the window cleaner, or one for each of your favourite fauxmosexual Russian pop princesses.
The TS500 is a quad-band slider with 2-megapixel camera, FM radio, video, MP3 and MMS. Stereo Bluetooth and mobile Internet access are included. Continue reading...

Intel and LG create 'mobile Internet devices'
Intel announced today at the Mobile World Congress that LG will use its latest generation technology to build a new class of device called 'mobile Internet devices', or MIDs. Yeah, that'll catch on.
Specifically, Intel and LG will work together to build these devices using a processor that Intel has code-named Moorestown. The devices will also use a version of the Linux open-source operating system called Moblin. The LG device is expected to be one of the first Moorestown designs to hit the market. And Intel has said that devices using the new Moorestown chips will hit the market by 2010. Continue reading...

Media Go: Sony Ericsson's war on media management
Sony Ericsson's hoping to take a lot of the complications that even we, as reviewers, have to suffer when reviewing mobile phones: file management. Its new Media Go application, which debuts with the all-new W995 Walkman handset, promises pain-free media management, and it could be the sorely needed final piece to the Sony Ericsson puzzle.
Typically with phones and media players, dragging and dropping a music or video file onto your new device will give you compatibility errors like 'incompatible format', 'unsuitable frame rate' or 'incorrect aspect ratio'. This is what Sony Ericsson aims to make a thing of the past. Continue reading...

Samsung Blue Earth: The plastic-bottle phone
In an attempt to help consumers be more eco-friendly, Samsung has come up with the Blue Earth, a pebble-shaped, solar-powered touchscreen phone. The Blue Earth is free from harmful substances such as beryllium and phthalates, and is made out of recycled water bottles.
On the back of the Blue Earth, you'll find a solar panel designed to harness the sun's energy and pump it into the phone's battery. To add to the Blue Earth's green credentials, there's easy access to controls for screen brightness and backlight duration, as well as an energy-efficient Bluetooth mode, so that you can save power. It even features an 'eco walk' function that uses a built-in pedometer to show you by how much walking, instead of driving, reduces CO2 emissions. Continue reading...

Next-gen iPhone 3G may get matte finish
MacRumors.com claims to have obtained leaked photos of the next-generation iPhone 3G, showing a matte black finish on a metal casing. That's finish is good news if you're tired of your iPhone showing every bit of grit and grime on its otherwise perfectly glossy finish.

Garmin-Asus nuvifone M20 and G60: Sat-nav smart phones
When you're up against tough competition, teaming up with someone else is often a good idea. Enter Asus, the PC manufacturer, and Garmin, the sat-nav manufacturer. The two companies have joined brands to create Garmin-Asus, a smart-phone manufacturer. To baptise this new partnership, Garmin-Asus on Thursday unveiled two smart phones: the nuvifone M20 and nuvifone G60.
The Garmin-Asus nuvifone M20 (pictured) is a touchscreen device that combines Windows Mobile (6.1 Professional) functionality with Garmin's navigation software. According to Garmin-Asus, you can use the M20 to search for real-time traffic information, weather updates and movie times, but it's the location-based features that are the cherry on top. Modu phone jackets: Slip into something more functional
You might remember Modu from last year's Mobile World Congress coverage. The Israeli company makes a tiny modular mobile phone that can be inserted into one of several 'jackets' to become a fully functional phone with real controls. Each jacket -- really just a handset shell -- offers a different design and feature set. You can change them at will to match your mood and needs.
Modu will be showing four new jackets next week at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Continue reading...
Virgin Mobile launches £8.50 monthly tariff
Unlike some others, Virgin Mobile's new 8.50-per-month contract tariff is both inexpensive and makes a lot of sense. For a mere 850 pence not only can you walk away with a free phone, such as the Samsung U600 or LG KC550, but you also get 100 free minutes and texts.
This is one of the best monthly contract deals we've seen to date, given that many people who buy pay-as-you-go phones top up 10 every month anyway. But there is a catch: you get locked in for 18 months.
Being locked in to any contract for 18 months can get really annoying, especially if you don't like your phone or you find you need more minutes or texts. Before you sign up to this contract, make sure you really like the phone and the deal. Continue reading...

Archos announces Android phone
When Archos announced it would enter the netbook space, we began counting the taste buds on each other's tongues, because we thought it was substantially more interesting. But, when we heard Archos was entering the mobile-phone arena with a Google Android-powered media device, it was time to put our tongues away and pay attention.
Archos has announced it will launch a 3G mobile tablet, capable of making voice calls, that will run Android rather than the custom Linux builds used in the company's most recent Archos 5 and Archos 7 devices. But, when asked, an Archos spokesperson said this isn't a replacement for the Archos 5G -- an existing Archos tablet that incorporates mobile broadband -- but an entirely new device. Continue reading...
Photos: Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot C903, W395 Walkman phones
Sony Ericsson has added to the pre-Mobile World Congress announcements with two slider phones, the new camera-centric Cyber-shot C903 and music-minded W395 Walkman. The C903 packs a 5-megapixel camera that you can use to geotag images with the built-in Assisted GPS.
Ericsson claims the C903 has a unique sliding lens cover but, frankly, we'll believe that when we see it. It comes with the ever-pointless smile shutter and face detection for up to three people. You can upload and view pictures at photo-sharing sites Picasa, Flickr and Snapfish, or store your images on Memory Stick Micro. Continue reading...
