Apple delays white iPhone 4, due to 'manufacturing challenges'
Earlier in the month when Apple hosted its grand 'antennagate' press conference, it announced that the alternative white version of the iPhone 4 would be arriving in the US at the end of July. Sadly that's no longer the case however, as Apple has pushed back the snowy smart phone's launch.
In a statement made by Apple, the Cupertino-based heavyweight said, "White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we orignally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year." Continue reading...
BBC News iPhone app launches today, Android and BlackBerry 'soon'
The BBC News app, which lets iPhone users check out the very latest happenings the world over, has finally popped up in the UK. The BBC Trust has decided that the Beeb's plans to launch dedicated smart-phone apps don't require any further review.
The News app is launching for the iPhone and iPad today, but Auntie has announced she intends to bring the app to both Android and BlackBerry phones in the near future.
Erik Huggers, director of future media and technology (superb name and job title -- what a man), has said in a blog post on the BBC site, "We know that increasing numbers of you want to access BBC output on-the-go and the rapid growth of Internet-connected mobiles and smart phones in the market means we can cost-effectively provide our content and services on these devices.
"It will come to BlackBerry and Android phones in addition to other devices later in the year," he confirmed.
The plans to release these apps were formed way back in February, but the BBC Trust put the whole project on the backburner while it tried to figure out whether or not a Public Value Test (PVT) was in order. Continue reading...
Microsoft gives free phone to every employee to code in their spare time
Microsoft will give out free Windows Phone 7 handsets to all of its employees to encourage them to build apps for the new operating system in their "spare time", according to an internal email published by TechFlash.
The jumbo mobile giveaway was spotted in a Microsoft employee's tweet by Mary Jo Foley from our US sister site, ZDNet. That means about 95,000 WinPhev phones will end up in MS goody bags this year.
But according to the email from Microsoft top dog Andy Lees, there are some strings attached.
"Understand the unique value of Windows Phone 7 and evangelise to your customers, partners, friends and family!" writes Lees, in a imperative worthy of a little red book.
"Develop! A new employee developer programme which makes it much easier for you to develop apps for Marketplace in your spare time," continues the email. Continue reading...
Skype for iOS 4: Multitasking mobile madness, with no extra 3G charge
Skype has released an update to its iPhone app that takes advantage of iOS 4's multitasking capabilities. You can now make and receive calls while working outside the app, and even when the iPhone itself is locked.
The ramifications are impressive -- it's now possible to pretend you're listening to your Skype contacts wittering on about the birth of some child or whatever while enjoying a sneaky browse through your photos, or responding to a few emails.
Ever since iOS 4 became publicly available we've been enjoying the slew of updates to all our favourite apps, and Skype is a welcome addition to the club. Furthermore, the benevolent Skype overlords have stated in a blog post that they won't be charging an additional fee for calling over 3G, saying, "Better call quality and better availability... lead to increased call frequency and longer calls.
"We also believe that the mobile world is in a period of significant change, for example, with some operators starting to move to tiered pricing models. In light of that, we no longer have plans to charge a supplement to make calls over 3G." Continue reading...
iPhone 4 now at Carphone Warehouse
Even with our pie-tastic iPhone 4 price comparison showdown, shopping for the best iPhone 4 price is confusing. Tally ho Carphone Warehouse, which will sell you an iPhone 4 from Orange, Vodafone or O2 starting today.
That leaves out 3, T-Mobile and Tesco Mobile, but it's still pretty handy for doing a little cross-network shopping. There are restrictions, however -- you can't buy the 16GB iPhone 4 on Vodafone, and the iPhone 4 on O2 is only for people upgrading. Continue reading...
Vodafone signs BlackBerry Pearl 3G, LG Optimus, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro
Vodafone has transferred in three new phones to its starting line-up. The BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9105, LG Optimus GT540, and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro all pull on Vodafone colours today.
The Pearl 3G, which costs about £300 on its own, is free on a £25, 24-month price plan. That nets you 300 minutes talky-chat and unlimited texts. Data is a paltry 500MB of Web surfing -- we don't get out of bed for less than 1GB. The phone comes with a selection of red, blue or black skins. Continue reading...
Wrapsol Ultra protects your iPhone 4, might help with signal problems
You've just spent £500 on your new iPhone, and aside from the crushing disappointment that came from realising that Apple specialises in form over function, you're very happy with your shiny new phone. Then disaster -- you're having a whale of a time FaceTiming some Hoxton-dwelling bequiffed pillock when your precious iPhone falls from your hand. Its impractical but shiny glass screen shatters, and you cry bitter tears of loss.
What's most tragic about this totally fictional, but plausible, story is it was totally preventable by a very reasonable investment in some sort of protective plastic wrap. Like the one Wrapsol kindly sent us for appraisal, the Ultra. We fitted it to one of the many iPhones we keep in the office specifically for testing iPhone cases. Continue reading...
Google discontinues Nexus One: This is an ex-Android
Google is taking the Nexus One out into the woods and putting a bullet through the back of its touchscreen. The search giant's own-branded Android smart phone is to be discontinued.
The Nexus One was a bold experiment by Google, an HTC handset fitted with Google's Android software, only sold online and unlocked. In May, Google pulled the plug on online sales, and now the final handsets have arrived from HTC. The Nexus One will still be available from Vodafone for the time being, but it's surely living on borrowed time. Continue reading...
BT jacks up landline prices by ten per cent
BT is jacking up the cost of a landline phone or Internet connection. Your monthly line rental will go up by 50p from the beginning of October, bringing the yearly cost of a landline to £160.
The cost of a call will rise to 10.9p from 9.9p, or during the day up to to 6.4p from 5.9p. That 10 per cent increase is way over today's inflation rate, 3 per cent or therabouts. BT reckons this change won't be noticeable for most customers, as more than half are on inclusive packages. Continue reading...
Virgin Media VM800: Six months free Interwebs
Six months ago, we were all actually looking forward to the World Cup, bow ties weren't cool, and the iPhone 4 was just a twinkle in Steve Jobs' eye. Six months on the Web is even longer. Think what all you pay as you go phone owners have missed out on, not like those hoity-toity smart-phone owners with their la-di-dah unlimited data. But now the tables are turning, as unlimited data goes the way of Robert Green's England chances and the Virgin Media VM800 phone is offered with six months of free data.
The VM800 is built by budget handset-maker Alcatel and branded with Virgin Media colours. It's available on Virgin's pay as you go network. It uses the super-speedy Opera Mini browser for Web surfing and offers up to 9 hours talk time.
The phone sports a Qwerty keyboard, a 2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player and an FM radio. It throbs with up to 4GB of microSD storage. Continue reading...
iPhone 4: Apple claims signal problems are "not unique to the iPhone", offers a free case
Apple is giving all iPhone 4 owners a free case for their phone. Steve Jobs made the announcement as he fought back at criticism of the iPhone 4 in a bullish emergency press conference at Apple HQ today, which he opened with the words Were not perfect. Phones arent perfect... But we want to make all our users happy." Continue reading...
Apple iOS 4.0.1 update tinkers with signal indicators, doesn't fix iPhone 4 antenna
Apple's iOS, the operating system that powers the iPhone, has been updated to help the phone more accurately display the amount of signal it's receiving -- something Apple has confessed it has been getting "totally wrong" for some time.
While iOS 4.0.1 should give iPhone owners a better idea of how much signal they have, it won't address the hardware issue that causes the iPhone 4 to drop signal when users grip it by its external antenna. Continue reading...
ZTE Racer cheap Android phone spied on 3
3's just unveiled an Android smart phone that costs a paltry 110. Great news for people who need a replacement handset because they've consumed one too many shandies at last night's company party (if anyone's found any rogue mobiles, please return them to Crave Towers -- a handsome reward awaits you). Firefox Home comes home to iPhone
Our post-party Friday morning fog has been pierced by the news that Firefox Home has been approved by the iTunes Store. The Web-browsing app is syncing our desktop browsing with our iPhone even as we clumsily stab at our keyboard.
The app syncs your phone with your desktop browser, so your history and tabs are available in your pocket. Install the Firefox Sync extension on your desktop to record your browsing to the cloud, then log in to your account via your phone to pull up the sites you've visited. Continue reading...
iPhone 4 is 'the new Vista': Apple press conference to announce recall?
It's all kicking off: Apple has called an emergency press conference to address the controversy surrounding the iPhone 4 and its incredible shrinking phone signal.
iPhone 4 has been plagued with controversy since it first arrived in customers' hands, and owners quickly discovered those very hands broke their new £500 phone. It may be the dog and bone everyone and their gran has heard of, tweeted about, and featured in a hilarious webcomic, but it divides opinion like few other tech products -- and has even led to a share price nosedive. Continue reading...
Modu 1 modular phone hits UK, touchscreen Modu T to come: Android Modu-like?
We're fickle followers of fashion here at Crave, and we find it seriously tiresome that most mobile phones give you so little choice of design. Black or white for the iPhone 4? Where's the individuality, darling? Where's the expression of personal creativity? We have a real soft spot, then, for the Modu 1, a long-awaited modular mobile now finally arriving in the UK. Continue reading...
No iPlayer on Android: We call shenanigans over BBC blog post
In our eyes, the BBC is nearly perfect. We love its TV stations, its Web sites and all of its radio stations that don't have One in the title. But when it comes to iPlayer support on mobile devices we have a bee in our bonnet and that bee is angry and very stingy. Why? Because we think the BBC is being very unfair about who can access iPlayer, and on what device. Continue reading...
BlackBerry 6: Next-gen software teased, looks a bit iPhone
BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, still glowing with Canadian pride at its royal visit, has shown off the new features of BlackBerry 6. The next generation of the software powering BlackBerries packs a new WebKit-powered browser with multi-touch, assorted social media options, and a form of cover flow for your tunes.
All this multi-touch action suggests a move away from BlackBerry's traditional Qwerty keyboard on phones such as the Bold 9700 and Curve 8520, to touchscreen models like the BlackBerry Storm 2. Continue reading...
Fring accuses Skype of "ambush" in video calling VoIP scrap
We like a good tech dust-up, and it seems a new scrap is brewing -- this time it's video-calling VoIP services Fring and Skype apparently squaring off as we gather round chanting, "Fight! Fight! Fight!"
No sooner has Fring 4 iPhone 4 brought 3G video calling to the latest Apple phone than the service loses Skype. Scrappy Fring reckons it has been "ambushed", while Skype told us it believes Fring is breaching the API terms of use and end-user licence agreement. Continue reading...
