The new Nokia Lumia 900 is hard as nails -- literally. The screen can not only survive having nails hammered into it, it can even be used in lieu of a hammer when there's some nailing needs doing.
Nokia set out to prove the toughness of the Lumia 900's screen by heading down to the hardware validation lab with a hammer, a two-by-four and some nails. The phone emerged unscathed from being nailed, thanks to its toughened screen. Continue reading...
Apple and Samsung kick off settlement talks
Apple and Samsung have kicked off settlement talks that could see the two companies ending the bitter patent war that's raged for the last year, the BBC reports.
A US judge has ordered the two firms to play nicely and try to make friends, following months of legal action that's seen Apple and Samsung aggressively suing each other. Apple accuses the Korean company of "slavishly" copying its gadgets, and in some cases has had Samsung kit banned from sale. Continue reading...

Motorola has laid its cards on the table over Ice Cream Sandwich, admitting that some of its phones actually get worse if updated. And if yours is one of the phones Motorola judges not to be improved by the update -- no Ice Cream Sandwich for you.
"We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update," Motorola says. "And obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can't be done -- well then, we're not able to upgrade that particular device." Continue reading...

We learnt last week that O2 is the first network to make this fastest flavour of 3G available, with prospective S3 owners in major cities set to benefit. Continue reading...
Google acquiring Motorola next week, Android staying free
Chinese regulators have given Google the green light to take over Motorola, The Wall Street Journal reports. Along with the antitrust regulators in America and Europe giving the rubber stamp a few months ago, Google is all set to swallow up the US mobile company.
The $12.5bn (£7.9bn) deal is expected to go through early next week. One rather big caveat was attached -- that Google keeps Android completely free to use for the next five years, so expect no let up in the number of Android devices. Continue reading...

The full ROM has leaked over at Android Police, so if you have a rooted Android phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, you can download the S3's version of Touchwiz. Handy if you want a taste of what to expect before you buy. Continue reading...

And when its bigger brother, the Tablet S, got the upgrade almost a month ago, you could be forgiven for feeling left out in the cold.
Worry no more -- the Tablet P will be served a healthy dollop of Ice Cream Sandwich on Thursday 24 May. Just five days to go. Continue reading...

So hang on. Just two days before Apple and Samsung are due to sit down and start settlement talks over their ridiculous patent wars, Apple has tried to ban the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US. Poor form.

iPhone 5 hint as Apple secures iPhone5.com
Apple has secured iPhone5.com, perhaps hinting at the name for the next iPhone. Is Apple jealously guarding the sanctity of the iPhone name, or will the iPhone 5 finally follow the iPhone 4S?
Apple has tied up the web address for the iPhone 5, wresting it from cybersquatters sitting on the domain name. The question is whether it's pre-empting an announcement of 'iPhone 5' as a moniker for the next phone from Apple, or this is just a precautionary measure to protect the iPhone brand. Apple defends 'deceptive' Siri in lawsuit
Apple's fighting back against claims that its Siri voice-controlled assistant isn't all it's cracked up to be, saying legal complaints filed in March against the snarky robot butler are too vague to be taken seriously.
Legal action taken in March by a New York man called Frank M Fazio moaned that Siri wasn't performing with the same finesse as in the TV ads, which show Siri doing things like making appointments or looking up guitar chords. Continue reading...
HTC Desire C tested with first benchmarks
More details have emerged on the HTC Desire C, the forthcoming budget Ice Cream Sandwich phone. It's been tested and benchmarked to see if a low-specced affordable phone can cope with the demands of up-to-date Android.
Inside the Desire C is a 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Adreno 200 graphics chip. It's possibly the lowest-specced phone to run Ice Cream Sandwich, even leading us to wonder whether it could properly handle ICS at all. Continue reading...

Jubilee season is set to get a shade rosier -- a pink version of the Samsung Galaxy Note should be on sale in the UK in June, available to buy from Carphone Warehouse.
The Inquirer spotted the phone flogger's 'coming soon' page, which pips the pink Note as coming out next month. I can't be sure how long that page has been lurking there, so I've contacted Carphone Warehouse for more information and I'll let you know if I hear anything. For now, you can use the listing page to register for updates. Continue reading...

Google plans five Nexus phones and tablets for Jelly Bean
Google is planning not one but five Nexus phones and tablets, according to new reports. That's a whole line-up of sequels to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and the original Google Nexus One to show off the next generation of Android.
Previously Google has worked with one manufacturer at a time to build a Nexus phone for each new update to the Android operating system. But the next update, Jelly Bean, will appear on a range of five phones and tablets built as many as five partner manufacturers, to be released in the US by the end of November.
