The best Android apps

Tricorder

We'll make it clear from the start. This free app doesn't do anything massively useful. One for the Trekkies, Tricorder is, however, so totally awesome that it's worth mentioning.

Tricorder provides data from a variety of the phone's sensors, including the accelerometer and digital compass, providing readings of, for example, your current rate of acceleration, the local magnetic field, and the temperature. By far the coolest of all are the Wi-Fi and cell-signal monitoring readings.

Tricorder is little more than an amusing toy, but it will tell you what Wi-Fi networks it can detect in your vicinity and the signal strength, meaning you could potentially squeeze some real benefit out of this little chunk of fun.

There's an iPhone app that mimics the functions of a tricorder, but we think the Android one is far better.
