The best Android apps

Aside from being a generally amazing operating system with a couple of decent handsets, Android is loveable because it's flexible and open to developers. Android has plenty of ground to cover before it threatens the iPhone's OS, but it's got so much potential -- and we can't help rooting for the underdog.

The following is a selection of our favourite Android apps. These are the ones that will save you the most time, make your life slightly better or are just plain good fun. Mostly, these apps are free, although, in some cases, we're using a trial version or a beta. Even so, that doesn't detract from the fact that we've turned a good phone into a great one with a few taps of the screen.

We used a HTC Magic for our testing, but these apps will be just as happy on any other Android phone, including the HTC Hero, which has just been announced. There are, of course, many more apps out there, so, if you know any good ones, mention them in the comments section, and we'll look into them.
