Palm responds to Apple's moaning: Fight!

Apple issued a warning earlier this week that it doesn't support iTunes synchronisation with "non-Apple digital media players" and that future versions of the software may put an end to any such capability. The announcement was dripping with so much passive aggression it was obvious it was directed at the Palm Pre, which shows up as an iPod when connected to iTunes and allows you to sync non-DRM media to the smart phone.

Palm isn't taking it lying down and has responded to Apple's threats. Speaking to John Paczkowski of the Wall Street Journal, Palm spokesperson Lynn Fox said, "Palm's media sync works with the current version of iTunes. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronisation experience.

"However," Fox added, "people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider."

Also, as MyPre.com points out, Apple would have to specifically block the Pre since it shows up as an iPod and any casual changes to iTunes could affect legacy iPod support. Apple's next move? A note on the fridge saying "someone" shouldn't eat other people's food.
