Palm webOS: On your mark, get set, Palm!

Palm's webOS and its harbinger, the Pre, congealed out of the vapour a little further with the release of the Mojo software development kit yesterday.

Palm's Michael Abbott showed off the Mojo SDK's bells and whistles at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. These included a push-notification service for status updates, such as a new instant message -- a feature that may sound familiar from the recent iPhone 3.0 announcement. There will also be an emulator so that old Palm OS applications can run on the Pre and other webOS phones.

Surprisingly, Abbott revealed that Palm's target market is 75-year-old women who live in Florida -- well, that's our guess, based on his slides featuring a user called 'Betty Reinhardt'.

If you're keen to get coding for the as-yet-nonexistent Pre, get ready to suck up to the bouncers, because admission to the developers' program is by application only. Palm promised that once the bugs have being ironed out, it'll blow those doors wide open, but until then you can apply at its developer Web site.
