Hot Phones

We spent quite some time with the Palm Pre at the recent Mobile World Congress, and so far we're very impressed. In this video, we're treated to an in-depth look at webOS, Palm's new operating system for the Pre.

As one of the first touchscreen mobiles that can genuinely rival the iPhone, what can you expect? Well, many of the functions can be controlled using gestures. There's a gesture area at the bottom of the device, and it responds to swipes across the screen in a similar way to turning the pages of a book.

Card View displays all the currently running applications in their current state, so it's easy to get an idea of the emails, Web pages and such like you have open on the device. Universal Search lets you rifle through the contents of the phone and search engines such as Google via just one data entry box.

Messages from multiple email accounts can be viewed together in one screen, so you can combine your personal Gmail messages with your work notes from Microsoft Exchange. Similarly, the address book has fields for all kinds of handy extras, such as Facebook account details, to help cut down on the number of screens you have to flick through.

Watch our video for more details on how this device works, and keep reading CNET UK for details on UK availability as they're announced.
