Photos: Samsung i8510 8-megapixel camera phone
The i8510's brilliant camera lets offers a variety of different modes that wouldn't look out of place on a decent compact camera, including slow motion video and a panoramic mode (pictured) that's one of the best we've used yet. As you move the camera around it automatically figures out when to take the next pic, takes it, and then it stitches all the shots together.
There's a face-detection feature, which automatically detects a face in a picture and then adjusts the camera's setting to take the best shot of the person's face. There's a smile-detection feature that takes a picture when someone smiles and it works well, as we found out when we briefly tested it in the office. These will all be familiar to camera aficionados, but it's the first time we've seen such an extensive set of camera features on a phone.
Our only disappointment so far with the camera is that it doesn't have a xenon flash. The LED photo light is bright, but only when you're close up, and it doesn't illuminate a scene very well if it's very dark and you're stood more than a couple of metres away. There's no room for optical zoom, either.
