Samsung Innov8 i8510: 8-megapixel camera phone

Mobile Phones

With a 10-megapixel mobile phone in its handset lineup, Samsung is no stranger to high-end camera phones. But yesterday, in an effort to prove that it really means business, the company announced a new 8-megapixel shooter handset.

The Samsung i8510, aka Innov8, promises a full set of camera features to keep shutterbugs happy. Inside you'll find an auto-panorama mode; a bright flash; smile, blink and face detection; wide dynamic range capturing abilities; and a video recorder that captures clips at 30 frames per second.

Beyond snapping shots, it also has an FM radio, Wi-Fi, a large display with an accelerometer and an optical mouse, although we're not sure how that'll work. It has a 3.5mm headphone socket, stereo Bluetooth, 16GB of internal memory expandable with microSD and a music player.

Oh, and it makes calls as well. The Samsung Innov8 is a quad-band handset and supports HSDPA for high-speed downloads, geotagging and GPS. With this new handset Samsung seems to be going after both the geotagging Sony Ericsson C905 and the Kodak-Motorola mash-up, Motorola ZN5.

It should be available here by next month and we'll let you know the price details when we have them. -Kent German
