O2 3G iPhone: Apple cracks down on unlocking
Tags: apple, cash, iphone, party
According to our sources at O2, Brits who want to buy a 3G iPhone are going to have to sign up to a contract before they can get their hands on one, wherever they buy it. This is seriously bad news for people eager to unlock their new iPhone, as you're not going to be able to buy one for the discounted contract price and then unlock it.
If you don't want to get tied to a contract you'll have to choose the pay-as-you-go option, which hasn't been priced yet but is likely to be more than a couple of hundred quid. Either way, unlockers are going to be stuck between a hard place and a rock. The choice is clear: sign up to a contract or splash some cash on a pay as you go handset.
In addition to a new payment system, Apple is also going to offer users the opportunity to download third-party applications officially via an app store. While this may stifle the hacked-iPhone development community and in turn make it less appealing to unlock the 3GiPhone, it has yet to be seen how good the official programs will be and how tightly Apple will control them. (You'll also have to pay up to $9.99 for some, if not all, of them.) Apps such as VoIP and third party browsers, such as Opera Mini, may not be indexed on the Apple app store, which will continue to interest underground developers.
It's obvious why this has happened though. This method means you're tied into a contract, or you're paying O2 and Apple a massive wodge of cash for the privilege of owning a 3G iPhone. We're disappointed about this decision, but it does make business sense -- and the official apps do take most of the sting away. But before you go and buy one with dreams of unlocking it, you have been warned. -Andrew Lim

the payg version will be locked to o2 so for people stuck in-contract unlocking will still be the only option. The market for unlocked iPhones will shrink but not disappear.

I switched from T-mobile to ATT about 4 years ago. It was a huge mistake. Lots of dropped calls, poor signal quality (the Seattle area) and horrible customer service. I couldn't wait until the contract was over. 18 months into the 2 year contract I put the ATT phone back in the box and went back to T-mobile. I would consider buying an iPhone if was available with T-Mobile or Verizon, but I will NEVER sign another ATT contract.

Thanks for ruining my summer.
Why does reality have to be so freaking cruel?

"Some if not all of them?"
They've already said that a number of the applications will be free. Nice research.

That is bad news because ATT is the worst cellular company around. The signal strength is almost always low. And the customer service is worse. What is the point of having an iphone if your calls are constantly dropped?

but what if u buy your iphone from an apple store, at full price. will you still be able to unlock it using ziphone software?

Doe's anyone know how much the pay n go iphone will cost? and when it will be realeadsed? because on 02 it only quotes "coming soon"

Unless O2 increase their 3G coverage considerably I will have to forgo the advantages of the new device and stick to the 3 network which has a far better HSDPA coverage in rural areas. This will probably mean switching to an unlocked N95. or even one locked to 3. Anyway it has a far better camera!
Don't be stupid Apple! We are not daft!

argh, why can't we just buy the iphone and keep it? ://///

It'd be really cool if you could use any network because they still aren't releasing it in Indonesia and I doubt they have any plans to in the near future because this country isn't so cool.

iPhone 3G will use firmware 2.0 which was cracked within a week of the SDK being released. Phones will continue to be Jail broken as many apps that are already available will never come to the app store such as Tethering your iPhone to a laptop so you can go online through your phone or VoIP apps etc. Plus of course many will still want to use the phone on other networks.
There are a few apps I have on my iPhone I've become very attached too and are unlikely to be in the app store (such as Fring - IM client for all the major IM networks plus voip and SwapLibrary that lets you have 2 iTunes library's so you can sync with 2 machines) so very tempted to jailbreak the iPhone 3G.

you can get it on pay-as-you-go not just on contract, it will be full price $199 or £100 on pay-as-you-go, but from free on contract

Unless they were telling porkies then supposedly 3 don't have their own network coverage in the UK and actually piggy back O2's network. I was told this by an O2 rep when I tried to cancel an old contract.
Also the "$199 or £100 on pay-as-you-go" is incorrect... from what I have read (though this could be wrong) the phone is going to cost around £300 (8GB) to £350 (16GB) on pay as you go. Welcome to rip-off Britain. Seeing as the versions are £99 (8GB) and £159 (16GB) on the O2 £30 contract I can't see the pay as you go being cheaper or no-one would go contract.

3 is a 3G (and above) Only network (Which is why they have the focussed investment and relatively good coverage. For their 2G coverage backup they originally relied on the o2 network but I believe (despite what O2 and Carphonewarehouse (now being an independent but 02 prefferred supplier (go figure "independent") that they now use the Orange network and have done for 2 years or so.

Only Time Will Tell, Nothing is Hack proof as so many other big players have learned the hard way, I'll give it three months max.

your best bet is to just sign the contract, like apple and at&t wants you to and ull be happy with a new and fast iphone...they have dropped the price in half just so you will consider....

I wonder if Apple will ever release the iPhone on any other network - I'm on 3 and have no plan on changing to O2 as I pay only £10 a month for 3's £25 a month contract (I was one of 3's first customers and have been with them ever since so I get a really good loyalty bonus).

I'd be happy to put cash down for getting one on pay-as-you-go, but does that mean I can use it on any network? Apple had said it will address this issue so as to not restrict its customer base. Has anyone heard anything about this?
