Apple iPhone 3G: What it doesn't have
Tags: jobs, multimedia, messaging, command
Our long nightmare is over. Finally Steve Jobs saw fit to announce to the world the existence of the iPhone 3G, and it does indeed have quite a few improvements over the current iteration -- 3G is huge of course, GPS is a welcome addition, and third-party applications are nothing to be sneezed at. Not to mention it's thinner at 116 by 62 by 12mm and has a flush headphone jack.
But we were expecting much more than what Jobs announced. Here's a short list of what we wanted from the second-gen iPhone, but just didn't get.
Multimedia Messaging: Almost every other phone on the market has the ability to send images to other phones via multimedia messaging, or MMS. Yes, you can still email those photos, but MMS is such a basic feature that it should've been in the iPhone from the start.
Copy and paste: Again, this is such a basic feature. Having copy and paste makes it easier to type out text messages and emails.
Video recording: In the world of mobile video, Qik and YouTube, it's a shame the iPhone doesn't have video-recording capabilities. Yes, the quality won't be that great, but it should be an option anyway.
Voice command: For a touchscreen phone, we think voice command and voice dialling would've been a great feature add-on for the iPhone. Perhaps this will be added via a third-party app, but we would really prefer this to be a native setting.
Bluetooth flexibility: Right now, all you can use Bluetooth on the iPhone for is headset voice calls, and that's it. This is sufficient for most people, sure, but we would like for Apple to open up the Bluetooth profiles for the iPhone. This means we would like stereo Bluetooth and A2DP for streaming music wirelessly, Bluetooth tethering so we can use the iPhone as a modem, and finally we would like to have Bluetooth file transfer protocol so we can transfer files to and from the iPhone.
These are just a few omissions we could think of. Did the iPhone 3G meet your expectations, or would you rather it have a few more features? Let us know in the comments and in our forum. -Nicole Lee

The majority of those missing features will be no doubt covered by the 3rd party apps, have faith!

This is crap im glad i got my self the Samsung Tocco as it does the things the iphone doesn't do and a lot of other things too. it is just a shame it does not do wifi but i have the Ipod Touch for that.

I really hope these third party apps will cover what Apple failed to, like NurseChris said.

It's a shame the camera is still only 2 mexapixels.
AnonymousTue 10 June, 2008 7:50am
why does everything have to be immediately available in all devices?
remember when a phone was just a phone, an ipod only played music, a camera took only photos?
no matter how many options you throw together, you won't please everyone. they'll want "more codecs", more pixels, different button shapes/icons, more colour options.
geez, get over it. if you don't like what a company sells, don't buy it. simple. buy something else - or somethings else and get what you really want.
it's getting to the point where if a music player doesn't have built-in fax facility and remote rocket launcher then people whinge. :)

I thinks its more about the fact that we are expecting everything to be in one device, many people know this is possible admittedly it’ll be a long time before we have 10MP camera phones as standard or 100+Gb flash memory cards but for the time we want what its best.
Its simple the iPhone doesn’t have some of the best tec that is currently available and the fact that it is out there is probs the thing which annoys people most.

"It's a shame the camera is still only 2 mexapixels."
and if it had 12 megapixels, we'd have more people whinging it didn't have a decent optic system, zoom, flash or ISO rating. manufacturer's can't win.
stand alone cameras still take the best pictures. that's their core function. the day a phone takes better photos, cameras will cease to exist. have you ever wanted to listen to MP3s or surf the net on a camera? it might be possible but i doubt it would sell more cameras.
maybe a 2 megapixel photo is the sweet spot for more users who want enough of a quality trade off against storage space, battery and processing power and just want to capture a quick pic on their phone...

Never mind no video recording, I thought one of the big features of 3G was the fact you could do video calling. I know no one uses it but should Apple really be allowed to release a handset branded as 3G that doesn't support it?

@ nurse chris
I totaly agree but the programmers can't add a front-facing camera *sigh* :(

Even the Nokia E90 has a 3.2MP camera!! :) I can't believe a phone of this generation still doesn't have some of the simpler bluetooth profiles.
Email push and GPS are welcome additions (finally).

SD card slot? why not... cuz then they can't sell the iPhoney3.0 when yoy can by 32 Gig cards. The interface is still pretty remarkable. no sidways keyboard yet?

Well i use the viewty and think its great, especially as you can hack it and make it faster. However, of all the items on your list that you are whining about, the only one that would bother me would be no MMS. Who cares about the camera, as its already been said, standalone take better pics, you only use it when you're out clubbing. As for copy and paste, just send it as a multiple text or email. I mean, you don't buy the IPhone as a gadget, you buy it as a fashion statement.

Dude all you guys saying that people are whining about this and dat , listen to yourself. fine leave the camera alone, its there , it works..but no copy and paste? no mms? no bluetooth ftp and tethering? is apple serious? its like mercedes making an out of this world luxury car today that looks like something from irobot and forgetting to put in airbags. its not that we want everything...we only want the basics dawg!!!1 since the advent of colour screens we've had mms on almost every phone. and not since those botched samsung phones have we had bluetooth without tethering to other phones for file transfer. and no copy and paste? seriously. this is the reason i chose the htc over the original iphone. thats why htc will keep hounding the apple iphone and doing it successfully. have you seen the htc diamond and the touch pro? dude those features are out there...just put it in the damn phone.. you claim to be an industry breaker, then break it. htc puts it all in and does it beautifully inspite of windows clunky interfae the htc will always be a bettter purchase for serious people that are not easiy dazzled by glitzy graphics and wowing transitions effects.
i'm buying the apple iphone, but the only reason i'm buying it is cos i have my trusty tytn by my side and i need more storage space for my music

I'm just happy that its coming out on PAYG :D

Surely all the missing stuff that people are going on about is software-related. So, it's only a mater of bringing out a firmware update - in the not too distant future. The hardware seems cool enough.
AnonymousWed 11 June, 2008 11:58pm
There may well be features missing that can be replaced by 3rd party apps can fix but seeing as apple try and claim there phone is the best phone in the world its pretty shocking there functionality is so basic.
DavidRGilsonFri 13 June, 2008 12:25am
I understand it's also still missing a BASIC to-do list manager, ... and a finger print resistant screen.

Is it really true that the iphone 3G can be use as pay-as-you-go?
because if it is, it definitely just earn a new customer...and i'm sure even more commitment-phobic customers
please someone lemm know know!!!!
thank you!!

Pay-As-You-Go...but for the US????
I just realized this is a .uk site :(

The Tocco has nothing on the iphone, get real will you.
If I wanted to take video then i'll use my camcorder, if pictures I use my camera.
Simple as that.
The iphone is untouchable at the moment.
The other manufacturers like Nokia & Sony need to sharpen up & quick.
The N96 looks great but the symbian operating system is too sluggish.
CartmanTue 24 June, 2008 10:26am
3rd party apps - they make it sound like they invented it - Windows Mobile and Symbian based phones have had 3rd party apps for years - just look at mysybian, handandgo, pocketgear - thousands of great apps.
I LOLed when Steve Jobs was comparing speeds of Edge vs 3G. Someone should have shouted - we know Edge is kack that's what we said when you stiffed us with it last time.
Still missing basics that I had on my XDA exec 3 years ago:
No flash support, no MMS, no video calling, no copy and paste, no downloading from the web, no way to turn off that annoying predictive text.
The predictive text is so arrogant - other phones make suggestions when you type which you choose to accept - iPhone forces them on you and you have to choose to reject. Ever been to chet.do.I'm? most iPhone users on this site will have as cnet.co.uk is mutated by the predictive text.
And yet I am still going to get one as otherwise I am stuck with the iPhone 1 for another year on this contract.

Folks, in terms of features on the iPhone the most innovative is the capacitive touchscreen. Everything else, it is really not like they invented them. They have just made everything better by utilizing capacitive touch sensing features. But I still there are numerous features that are available on other cellphones (really simple ones) that Apple can provide natively - very easily in software. To me, not having copy and paste is totally unacceptable for a business user.
I still think iPhone is a great TOY. I will probably buy one on July 11th.

one word for you - CAMERA
sony ericsson had phones released before the iphone 3G that now have 5.0 megapixel cameras and a FLASH so you can take pictures when its not bright out. i am someone that would love to have a quality camera in my phone, it just makes life easy
i was really looking forward to getting an iphone 3G and with all the talk of it being the most advanced mobile phone out there, im starting to see that its missing a lot of basics and extras that others are bringing into the market.
now im not so sure if i want to spend the money now, but dont get me wrong, way to go apple!
AnonymousMon 30 June, 2008 4:45pm
how bout the fact that it doesnt forward messages without a 3rd party app. How much more basic can u get than that
AnonymousFri 4 July, 2008 1:04pm
I agree with one of the anonymous users who said that there will always be someone complaining about some feature missing. That is life...plus they have a business incentive not to release everything all at once, making room for later product generations. ..BUT NO COPY & PASTE? Are you joking?
I was seriously considering buying an iPhone, but I assumed (INCORRECTLY) that it would have such a basic, and USEFUL feature. Now, as a business/personal user, I'm leaning back toward HTC.
AnonymousMon 7 July, 2008 2:37am
i think jamesfed is an idiot. u ppl are just looking for something to wine about. grow up. u know u can live without those features. and if ur not buying the phone then u dont have a reason to gripe! idiots!

I have had my phone since the release and I must say coming from a WINMO PPC6800 and a Palm Centro this phone is a killer. It is much more fun to play with, girls like me now, and well it is awesome. I love me!! IM KIDDING
Well not about the phone, the PPC6800 with WINMO and my Centro were awesome phones however I would rather have this phone any day of the week. The lack of camcorder (i have a camcorder for that) the predictive text is annoying as hell I will admit and I dont like the fact the camera has no zoom. Other then that BATT LIFE seems better then the others and as for ease of use, well that goes without saying. 5 Thumbs UP...I agree with above users if you are not buying one who cares what you say stop your damn whining.

I hav the iphone and must say im impressed. Its sleak, sharp, stylish and applications happen at a great speed. There are always going to be things they can improve on but for once in my life im content with what i have and how it works!! Remember the grass isnt always greener guys!!
AnonymousFri 22 August, 2008 2:54pm
I'm changing my opinion on this phone. MMS, bluetooth and a proper camera are the most basic features of every cell-phone. Will rather buy HTC Touch Diamond or N96... But the design is fine.
AnonymousSun 31 August, 2008 7:19am
I do not believe this

It was bound to happen, once again Apple can't/wont/didn't want to listen to the voice of reason!
Can't wait to see what Windows Mobile 6.1 and 7 will have to offer!
