Samsung Tocco: A phone that wants to be touched
Tags: samsung, metal, touchscreen, casing
Tocco isn't a taco gone wrong: it's the Italian word for touch and Samsung has seen fit to use it as the name of its latest touchscreen phone. Bene! Previously known as the Samsung F480, we saw this bella down at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year and thoroughly approved.
The Samsung Tocco is smaller than other touchscreen phones and thin too, but it feels very solid because of its metal casing. Its screen is responsive and vibrating feedback ensures you know when you've clicked something.
Samsung has introduced a new user interface that lets you drag and drop widgets on to the main screen. HSDPA (7.2Mbps) means you get high-speed access to the Internet on the go and there's an expandable microSD for adding memory.
The Tocco will be free on a monthly contract, and will be available from the start of June. For more pictures and information click through to the next photo. -Andrew Lim

Hi,
you can buy the phone for £319 from carphone warehouse on sim free.

I've just got one of these with an O2 contract. Very very cool phone and in many ways better than an iPhone (not least on price!). However, using it over the last week has revealed a few frustrating issues making it quite clunky to use. Very often you have to click about 5 times before getting where you want. The touch screen is also a bit variable (e.g. trying to scroll down on an appointment detail is a real hassle). Also, it would not accept a group vCard via Bluetooth from an iMac so all contacts had to be transferred using individual vCards. This phone may be an example of style over substance.

AnonymousThu 26 June, 2008 7:58pm
I think i'm getting thìs fone at the weekend it looks so good! What's the best contract and is it easy to text?
AnonymousWed 2 July, 2008 4:52pm
the camera is good, but on the phone it dosent look as good as it is because it saves memory, so when you upload to pc the picture quiaity is much better and actaully looks like a 5MP camera and not a 2MP
AnonymousWed 2 July, 2008 4:55pm
and the bestcontract is the one im on, t-mobile £30 a month, 18 months, 700 mins, unlimited texts, and the handset is £9.99
AnonymousMon 7 July, 2008 3:28pm
phones 4 u £350 and tmobile £275... Carephone Warehouse phone £310
AnonymousTue 8 July, 2008 5:28pm
i purchased this phone on contract with t mobile £27 per month 1000 mins or 2000 txts flext 35.
the handset is now completely sold out, 1000 being purchased in over a week which leaves me thinking that the contract rates are going to get much dearer. i suggest if you want one, get it fast!!!!!
AnonymousWed 9 July, 2008 3:08pm
I just got this phone on contract with carphone warehouse ...
1000 texts AND 800 minutes for £25 a month because apparently am a loyal customer :D
Its a great phone, but the battery life is AWFUL!
Woop woop!! xx
AnonymousThu 10 July, 2008 10:03am
I've had one for a few days now. The phone is cool on the whole, but compared to Sony Ericsson, the camera is poor it is shaky and struggles to take a steady clear photo - I was very disappointed with it. It is also quite fiddly to text with. The speaker on the F480 is brilliant and it's great for music. Orange are giving away a free 8GB micro SD card which is sweet. The odd photo does upload better on PC but you want it to look cool on the screen also when showing off your pics/phone and it just doesn't.
AnonymousThu 10 July, 2008 10:22am
I just upgraded to this last night and I should have it tmrw, im used to Sony Erricsons so i'll post my review soon.... i got a good deal, at least i think i did.
bluetooth handsfree kit, in car charger, unlim texts, unlim internet, 600mins, 8gb msd card - £25 a month with orange (upgrade, not new customer)
AnonymousThu 10 July, 2008 5:07pm
I have had the phone for a week now, as an upgrade from Orange
Free with 8gb card and 700 mins , 100 text, unlmtd landline, unlimted internet
All for £20/m on 18 month contract
Good points
1 .Stylish, slim, light and elegant
2 .responsive tocuh screen , infact to responsive!
3. Super fast internet browsing
4. Good FM radio with song recognition.
5. excellent MP3 palyer
Bad points
1. Camera is slow, i.e shutter speed, i.e more often blurred pictures
2. Phonebook is very basic
3. when listing contenst of sd card(images), these are tagged with the card symbol
obscuring picture visibility.
4. Speaker volume is rather low
5. No jack for headphone
6. Call dropping more often
7. texting is a nightmare - touch screen is too responsive
8. no extrnal keypad for navigation.
9. browser does not support other languages (i.e only latin fonts)
Overall this phone wins on style over substance.
However, I am returning this phone tomorrow.
I give it 7 out of 10 (what a shame), i shall definetly consider buying the next version once the issues are resolved.

AnonymousFri 11 July, 2008 11:49am
got a samsung tocco handset yesterday £319.99 but twice now the sound is horriffic , sounds like im talking to a darlek ... i am gutted need to look into this or its going back.... very dissapointed
samandSat 12 July, 2008 8:34pm
I've had my Tocco for a month and I have to agree. This is a nice phone for someone that doesn't expect too much out of it.
The 5mp camera is useless, one might even suspect that Samsung is lying about this.
The widgets are basic and not all of them are customisable.
You can't use videos instead of ring tones.
You can's use the keyboard when on the phone (so don't bother calling companies with IVR's).
AnonymousMon 14 July, 2008 8:20am
the price of the phone is 400 pounds i'm getting one tomorrow!!!!. but its worth it

AnonymousWed 27 August, 2008 12:04pm
this is by far the best phone i have ever had, its easy to use and its stylish, I LOVE IT!!!
AnonymousTue 2 September, 2008 12:15am
i am getting the tocco on Wednesday, i hope it is good as most of you have said but i do hope it is not a disappointment. mine is a £20 per month deal with 900 mins and unlimited text with the phone free with sim card ect. i dont think any of you would get this deal unless you are a gold member of Vodafone. i would only use it as a pleasure phone not a work phone so i dont think that the bad points would really apply to me and as i have the LG touch screen Prada phone as well, the touch screen issue wouldn't be a problem for me!
AnonymousWed 10 September, 2008 1:59pm
The samsung tocco is nice to look at but i have used an Iphone for some time now so when i judge the touch screen i use the Iphone as a bench marker and SORRY to say the tocco's touch screen needs a lot more work and the sound from this phone is not very good and i will go as far to say a cheap £40 mobile phone will sound far better and be easy to use and its all down to the touch screen but the 5 mp cmera is also poor due to the lense used so to me i will say the camera is 3.2 mp with a resolution upgrade via the phone itself so i think this is not a true 5 mp camera and the video recording is also quite poor when you think that the LG VIEWTY records at 120 fps but the tocco manages up to 30 fps if you are lucky...no save your cash and buy the Samsung i900 Omnia - 8GB as you will wish you had within one day of buying the tocco...as i have a Samsung i900 Omnia - 8GB and they function very very well indeed in most respects yet one is always drawn to the LG VIEWTY...the ebst phone ever produced as you can have full dvix movies on them for free....pay your money and take your choice...

AnonymousFri 19 September, 2008 6:15pm

AnonymousFri 19 September, 2008 6:18pm
Ive got a pink tocca with the t mobile contract. best thing ive ever done! verrry easy o use considering im useless with touch screen phones LOL. Million times better than the iphone, with louder speakers aswel. I recommend this phone totally! its really not a waste of money like that person said up the comment list. Enjoy x
AnonymousFri 19 September, 2008 6:27pm

AnonymousMon 22 September, 2008 9:04pm

AnonymousTue 23 September, 2008 2:13am
Having issues with uploading to my mac, the CD given does not work and when trying to bluetooth my files across it says there is an error, when trying to take it off using my laptop no photos show up on my phone, which is exactly the same when I plug it in using the usb. I tried moving them into my phone from my sim and visa versa but still doesnt work. It has a memory card in it so I dont understand why its not working.
If it continues I will probably take the phone back.
Someone help me!
