Sony Ericsson has announced a brand-new, er, brand, called Xperia, with a snazzy new Windows Mobile device. Not only is this a landmark phone for the company, it's also the first for it to use Windows Mobile.

The new X1 handset has a 76mm (3-inch) touch-sensitive screen, 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, Windows Media Player, 3D game support, FM radio, Internet Explorer, RSS feed reader, Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA, a microSD slot and 400MB of internal memory. It's also got a Qwerty keyboard stashed under that big ol' screen, which slides out from underneath.

But it also features Xperia 'panels', which are essentially customisable buttons below the screen on the front of the phone. These should give you quick access to your music, Web browser and your favourite stash of mobile celebrity porn.

Interestingly, it's HTC who's manufacturing the handset. Crazy times indeed. There's no word on UK availability or pricing at the moment, but our man with a plan, Andrew 'naked-on-the-rooftops' Lim is out at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as we speak, no doubt with gel in his hair and phones on his mind, so expect updates soon. The X1 does not have a microSD slot, it has a MemoryStick Micro slot (which is to be expected since Sony is the inventor of the MemoryStick).

I wonder how much it costs .. don't want to spend a fortune. Plus it looks allmoust the same as Toshiba G900 .

Sorry, Anonymous #, but you're wrong -- the X1 uses microSD, as we stated, not MemoryStick Micro. It's unusual, yes, but true.

Sony finally seeing sense and moving away from their proprietary formats - nice.

Purely because of the keyboard I find that phone quite interesting, although I fear it won't come out soon enough for me to consider. I bet it'll be pricey too.

will there be a similar model without keyboard. I never used keyboard on my hermes tytn and it will increase bulk to the phone.

This unit is manufactured by HTC. It certainly is HTC technology, not Sony. So it will be a MicroSD.

i've seen somewhere for 599ł in preorder + 7.99 for delivery:) ask google and you will get answers for all your questions:) if you want whole specs of this toy just visit sonys page (BTW SE K850i uses microSD and MSm2)

The X1 does not have a Memory Stick Micro™ & Business card scanner
