BlackBerry Pearl 8120: RIM pumps up the Pearl

Mobile Phones

Not wanting to turn its back on all the faithful BlackBerry users while it makes a big fuss about the iPhone, O2 is now stocking the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8120. This compact email-centric handset might look like the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl, but it does boast a few extra or upgraded features.

The 8120 packs Wi-Fi, which the 8100 doesn't, giving you high-speed access to the Internet when you're near a hotspot. There's a 2-megapixel camera instead of the 1.3-megapixel effort on the 8100, although we would have preferred something even beefier.

You can now shoot video with your BlackBerry, which you couldn't before. This is useful if you fancy filming a meeting or something (ahem) more interesting. You can access the included 1GB microSD card from the outside, so no more fiddling about.

One of our favourite improvements has to be the 3.5mm headphone jack -- it might seem like a small improvement, but it means we can plug in our Sennheisers and listen to music without needing to mess around with an adaptor. Sony Ericsson, if you're listening, we'd love to see the same on the Walkman phone range.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8120 is currently available exclusively from O2. For more information on pricing visit the O2 Web site. -Andrew Lim
