With all the hype surrounding the incoming iPhone, it's easy to forget that mobile phones haven't been around that long. Now we live in a world where even small children blabber away on their phones while sipping caffeine-free caramel macchiatos, on their way to the tanning salon.

So how did we get to this place? Which mobile phones made the difference and turned us all into fully fledged phone addicts, who crumble at the slightest drop in network reception? We've put together a list, in chronological order, of the handsets we think changed our world forever. -Andrew Lim

Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (1983)
This beast of a mobile phone was actually tiny for its day and the world's first ever commercial handheld phone. This bad boy didn't let you store any numbers on it, but it kept you in instant touch with all your business contacts. We say 'business contacts' because it's unlikely you owned one of these if you didn't work in the City or on Wall Street -- they were a little expensive to say the least: $3,995 in 1983.
