iPhone vs Sony Ericsson W950i vs Nokia N95 vs LG Prada

Since the iPhone won't come out here in the UK until the end of this year, some normally patient phone fans are getting antsy. But there are some great mobile phones available now, or in the next few months, that could well give the iPhone a run for its money. They won't have that special Apple smugness, but they'll play your music, let you browse the Internet and even do a few tricks the iPhone can't manage.
For those of you unfamiliar with the iPhone's specs, or those of you who just love reading them over and over again, here's a quick roundup. The iPhone measures 61mm wide by 115mm tall by 11.6mm deep. It runs a version of Apple's Mac operating system, OS X, and includes Widgets, Google Maps, the Safari browser and iTunes with CoverFlow. Apple has partnered with Google and Yahoo to bring maps and email to the device.
It has a large 89mm (3.5-inch) touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities that lets you do things like enlarge photos using two fingers. The screen adjusts the brightness depending on the ambient light and turns itself off when you're making a phone call to save power. It will also automatically change from portrait to landscape mode as you turn it, so you can take advantage of the widescreen.
There's a built-in Web browser that can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi or EDGE connectivity. It has a 2-megapixel camera on the back, a 3.5mm jack so you can use your own headphones, Bluetooth connectivity and of course, it's also a widescreen video iPod with a capacity of 4GB or 8GB. Now let's get to the phones you can buy before next Christmas.

Is thgere a phone out there that allows a difference UI for each funtionality ~ phone, music, video, web surfing? the iPhone's freagin' video screen fills the whole phone, yet functions line an iPod which millions are used to. I think it has a great chance to gain traction and this is coming from a company who has NEVER been in the "phone business".

To say that any phone is better than the iPhone seems to be a case for premature expectation. However, it is reasonable to think a current phone meets ones needs today thus can be gleefully purchased.

How old is the W850? A lot older than the iPhone by default.
Sony will answer the iPhone, but it's hard to imagine that anything they can come up with will match iPhone feature-for-feature.
I've got the W810i and like it. Even still, I'm anxious to buy the iPhone.
AnonymousMon 22 January, 2007 3:50pm
I really like the Sony Ericsson W950i but it's a shame that the keypad is so bad. Other than that, it's definitely worth checking out.

This description: "They won't have that special Apple smugness ..." appears in your first paragraph. How the present model of the iPhone presents a "special Applesmugness" to the user is a mystery to me. Of course it could be just the authors smugness in their contempt for anything that isn't tied to Microsoft; but I am really curious as to how you can make such an assertion. I would guess it is actually Steve Jobs that the author is describing. In that case it's attribution to the iPhone itself is nonsense.

i think N95 and sony's phone are just soooo yesterday. iPhone and Parada will blow them away. let the fight begin!

N95 hands down.
It makes me laugh at how many people are suckered into Apple's marketing.
WoW LoOk aT tHe cOoL ToUchScReEn - um, big deal?
Look at the real f*cking features, then COMPARE.
the iphone has a 2mp camera FFS
meanwhile while the N95 has a 5mp camera along with the fact it can capture 640 x 480 video at 30 FPS. This alone sets the N95 miles ahead of the iphone.
CASE CLOSED.

From Apple's web site:
iPhone uses quad-band GSM, the global standard for wireless communications. It also supports Cingular’s EDGE network, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, which links to Apple’s new, remarkably compact Bluetooth headset.

No, No and No. You have it all wrong. The iPhone does not comptete with any of these products. It is currently in a class by itself. It is like the iPod and the Zune - these phones are not in the same league is the ubiquitous iPhone. In comparison, they are Zune-like also-rans.

I personally prefer the prada and don't think Apple will make such an impact. Check out http://www.degardener.com/2007/01/23/iphones-devil-wearing-prada/

I think the N95 is by far the best out of them. I have got the N80 and love it. I cant stand the touch screens of the iphone and prada as ive owned a pocket pc before and realise how annoying touch screens are to use. Mobiles should be able to be used with one hand which cant happen on touch screen phones.

i like apple products because its easy to use and it has an artistic design but iphone compared to a nokia N95......iphone is so delayed :)
Tickles BambooWed 24 January, 2007 1:24pm
Personally, I find that the real smugness comes from the anti-apple brigade!
Apple fans just seem to me to be genuinely enthused about Apple products. And what's wrong with that? The anti-iPhone backlash has been so childish and predictable. Site's like CNET wouldn't get half the traffic (figures may be untrue) they do without Apple around.

is it me or does the 'wonderful iphone' just looks like a PDA
Chris MelsaTue 13 February, 2007 1:17pm
I'm personnally very excited about the iPhone...it looks the biz..although to say it is 5 years ahead of any other phone is rubbish..I own an O2 Orbit handset and it is brilliant...smaller than the iPhone...built in GPS...quality screen and with windows mobile 5 there is so many applications and software you can load onto it...i play div x movies on it widescreen. Never had problems with battery...Windows media player with album art is good..2gb micro sd is small and fiddily (doesnt compare to 8gb) but is ample. What do you think?

Hi all, just a correction to the phone measurements that have been placed above: Length 99mm, Width 53mm and Thickness 21mm. Ill also add, the weight is 120g. Thanks. Mike (Source: http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n95)

on paper the N series Nokias are fantastic but anyone who sells them know for a fact that Nokia and Symbian together can only mean one thing.........issues. The phone WILL crash, your applications WILL eventually not open. It WILL take half an hour for you to open text messaging. It has the best features list of the 4 handsets but as far reliability is concerned I would not touch a Nokia and I have a choice of all new handsets. I have the W950i currently and am very appy with it. It's only when you have a phone that can do many things that you realise you don't need half of them. You have so many people asking, can the phone do this, that and the other but let's face it, on a daily basis you do not need half o fthe applications on a handset. They are not business phones, purely fashionista items for the gadget hungry population. Iphone? Well, that says is all. Much like a hifi system, separates always work better and when 1 stops working you're not left without a phone, organiser, mp3 player, video player just because your has just crashed and wiped everything of

I totally agree with AntonioRoman, the more features they attempt to squeeze into a phone, the more likely it is to bugger up. I haven't had the pleasure (or horror, however you see it) of owning a N-series phone, but my old 6630 was a nightmare... It's a shame that Nokia's relability has gone down the toilet over recent years.

You lots must all be skits da Nokia N95 is in another league to da iPhone. Da iPhone is nice but it can't compare to da N95. Da only advantage dat da iPhone has is touchscreen but lets be honest touchscreens just get grubby fingerprints on dem and den stop workin.
Richard Sun 1 April, 2007 4:24am
'The' mate.....its 'the'...anything you say using 'da' does not really hold any weight when it comes down to it really.

I've owned an N95 for 3 weeks currently and it has crashed 3 times in that time, one was when I was sliding between keypad and music pad really quick, and the others when installing software. Old N-Series had alot of crashing problems (N80 anyone?) but it's really a step forward for Nokia. I'm not really fussed about the iPhone, it doesn't really seem like anything new.
AnonymousWed 18 April, 2007 11:25pm
I think the iphone will do well in both the consumer and business areas because I don't
really think any mfg. has a product with as many integrated features, it is the closest
device to a mini portable computer. I personnally don't mind spending the $600 plus
contract fees. What I like is it can work as a multi-device, I am only curious about battery life, before re-charging or if a replacement can be purchased. I heard that their is no replacement. Can anyone help with any information that I am currently not aware of, please post thank you.

Using N95 for about a week. Happy and comfortable with it's familiar user-friendly interface. It's camera is far better than expected. With N95's 5-mega pixel Carl Zeiss auto-focus, and digicam-like features, when compared to iPhone's and LG Prada's 2-megs, it's more than disappointing for them to be considered as feature-rich phones. Easy navigation although it's without touch-screen with it's responsive 4-directional key and snap to (same as windows) function. One-hand-operation made easy with it's easily accessible buttons. It charges supremely fast at less than 2 hours for a full-charge. A turn-off is it's short battery life, but it can be easily solved by buying additional batteries. iPhone is yet to be launched to give a fairer comparison with the N95. It has impressive large screen, great sound processing chip and great looks. But with it's non-expandable storage space and heavy body, N95, would still be a better choice for me. Wonder if it's battery is built-in. If it does, it fails.

N95 beats Iphone like hell , apple is new in the game so it cant really beat the legend,NOKIA, I phone might not be even user friendly but we do know that NOKIA is .

Obviously the Americans are playing the world again.
Phone has been Released in US for 499 USD = 369 EUR
and thinking to release it in Europe for 700EUR (Almost Double the price)
That will depend on how successful was their US product after all.
I will go with a European product as Nokia-Ericsson or other Asian mobile providers do not look regional pricing policies, they ship internationally under the same base cost.
LarsGTue 3 July, 2007 6:43pm
This is really an apples and oranges (or whatever fruit Nokia is) comparison. Two entirely different devices for two entirely different market segments.
Comparing the iPhone feature for feature with the N95, it will come up horribly short. Just like the iPods come up short (e.g., no voice recording, no FM radio, etc..) when compared to many other handheld media devices.
Compare for example the iPhone's bluetooth and that on the N95. The iPhone can use its bluetooth to pair with a headset and with a car kit, that's it. The N95 (and many other phones) can in addition use it to transfer files, sync with a PC, connect bluetooth keyboard, GPS and many other devices, you can connect it to a PC over bluetooth and use it as a modem, etc.
The iPhone is also not open for 3rd party developers, while smartphones have a plethora of 3rd party software available. As such, it would be a misnomer to call it a smartphone and you can't really compare it with them.
The point is, the iPod isn't considered one of the best in its class because of a feature checklist. It is because Apple is good at UI - they make devices that do a few things, and do them well. There's that 'it just works' factor.
The iPhone is for those who want an iPod, a cell phone and an Internet tablet in one. Wrapped up in that Apple UI experience.
The N95 is for the power user or gadget geek that wants the top of the line swiss army knife of cell phones.
DaveWWed 11 July, 2007 3:51am
AntonioRoman is wrong. Yes, in the past the Mac OS X was more stable, but the Internet is flooded with reports of constant crashing of the IPhone load content rich pages on the Internet. Myspace anyone?
A great interface is there to do just that, interface. What is the pint if the company that makes the interface thinks and treats you like a criminal and locks you out of the file system? You might as well pay someone to shoot you.
AnonymousWed 18 July, 2007 8:16pm
has anybody noticed that people are comparing completely different things here? the iPhone, no matter how Steve Jobs and company at Apple want to market and position it, is not in the same class as something like the N95, or the W950i. The premise behind a smartphone is that you can use it where-ever, whenever, and this mostly requires the possibility of

Nokia N95 is much better because it has everything such as a good camera, music player, video player, phone, messaging, video calling, and a lot more. Touch screen doesn't matter when you have lot of other things.
According to me Apple should just make computers and ipod, iphone won't be successful. You can check out experienced person’s opinions. www.swoti.com/mobilephones/

i-phone and Sony Ericsson W950i are much better music players than the Nokia N95. It sounds awful. You would get the same sound if you linked two tin cans and a piece of string with a hi-fi at the other end. N95 also crashes all the time, is ridiculously slow, it has a ludicrously short battery life and supposedly a "GPS" - better have a map near at hand!

N95 with Iphone/ Prada no no no, with N95 i have business, and pleasure 5.omgpxl by carl Zeiss, (professionalism) gsp, numerous connectivity options, the 3.5mm headjck port, load up your own applctns, i mean what more do yu need, well i'll say after n95, n95 then n95, yu can now talk about dem femine looking phones, sorry but N95 isnt in that league.

N95 = phone with all sorts of gadgets added.
Why are we comparing a phone (N95) to an iPod (iPhone)??

fantastic review!
AnonymousThu 1 May, 2008 12:12pm
LarsG... You've said what i couldn't really get my head round... Fantastic comment!
And a note to all your N95 Haters - People may think its slow, buggy etc, but you really have gotta know how to use it effectively - Such as firmware updates ;)
Also keep in mind its Symbian OS9 platform - There are offline/online YouTube apps, shed loads of games, the Opera Web Browser, great apps/games to make use of the accelometer, media apps so it can play Ogg Vorbis files, such as OggPlay or even CorePlayer - which is truly outstanding (Though an iPhone version is coming...)
Alongside the above which i have, i can create, edit and view Word/Excel/Powerpoint docs, and view PDF, i can chat on various IM servers, and i can also check the weather, and use my phone as a multi-linugal dictionary. Alongside that, i can lock certain parts of my phone - Such as messaging and the telephone. The N95 also has Flash Lite 3 DE, an audio converter, a image converter/resizer, mp3 dictaphone, a DJ App that can play 2 songs at the same time, and of course, CorePlayer, that does everything Multi-Media. Then i can edit images by putting frames round them, and i can paint my own picture too. Then i can play on GBA/GBC and other emulated consoles - Even the megadrive. Then there is Java games as well. I can use my N95 to do more with bluetooth - Such as control the other phone, and i can block SMS/MMS and calls without calling O2. And i can check E-Mails too. And download torrents. And i can use mine as a pedometer - Which detects how many steps you've done and it calculates how much energy you've burned. And that is the start of it.
So before you rate a phone, you gotta look deep into what it can do, and believe me, the N95 (And this may surprise some) can do a lot more. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is a great idea - But its what LarsG has said, and it does kinda lack a lot of features.
AnonymousThu 1 May, 2008 12:20pm
Oh and sorry i made that look like an essay...
But also there is the new N-Gage platform... And to add gaming on top of all that, its truly superb

The reason why, “N95 has a 5mp camera along with the fact it can capture 640 x 480 video”, is that the owners can stay all day and take iPhone pictures and record experience of using the device they don't have. It’s just unfeared to compare every device to iPhone, iPhone will win hands down.

I think the Nokia N95 is ten times better than the iPhone. I'm not waiting for an iPhone I'm going to stick with the N95.
