Apple's Jony Ive knighted, discusses 'quest for simplicity'
Apple's design guru Jonathan Ive has received a knighthood, with the 45-year-old British designer behind the iPod, iPhone and iPad opening up about Apple's design philosophy in an interview with the Telegraph.
"We try to develop products that seem somehow inevitable," Sir Jony told the paper. "That leave you with the sense that that's the only possible solution that makes sense."
The Chingford native says Apple's products are tools, "and we don't want design to get in the way. We're trying to bring simplicity and clarity."
If you tried to describe Apple's familiar design aesthetic, 'minimalist' might be the word you'd reach for. But Sir Jony says simplicity isn't as simple as just clearing space.

Orange and T-Mobile are confident they will be able to launch 4G mobile services in the UK this year, despite fierce opposition from rival operators who don't want them getting a 4G head start.
The launch of 4G services in the UK has been long delayed thanks to spectrum squabbles as operators seek to protect their existing businesses and jockey for the choicest positions in the 4G world order. Continue reading...

Excited about extra-fast web browsing on your brand-new Samsung Galaxy S3? We certainly were -- but Samsung has backtracked today, admitting that the S3 won't support DC-HSPA after all.

Sony Xperia S early Ice Cream Sandwich update was a mistake
Ice Cream Sandwich isn't coming to the Sony Xperia S as soon as we'd hoped. After hinting that we could be seeing the latest version of Android on the Xperia S as soon as this month, Sony has admitted it spoke too soon.
This isn't a delay as such, but a return to the original timescale for the Ice Cream Sandwich update. Last week a member of Sony's support team revealed the update would hit the Xperia S in late May or early June -- but it now appears that said support staffer had mixed up his Xperias. The May or early June update applies to other 2011 Xperia phones, but not the Xperia S. Continue reading...
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 now available from Three
The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is available now from the admirable men and women of the Three network, bringing with it a 3.8-inch screen, a dual-core processor and a 5-megapixel camera for free on contracts from £22 per month.
For that 22 quid, you'll get the phone for free, along with 500 minutes, 5,000 texts and 250MB of data. That's only going to be enough data to check your email every so often, so I recommend going for the £27 per month plan -- that'll snag you 1,000 minutes, 5,000 texts and as much data as you can possibly get through. Continue reading...

Apple and Samsung have kicked off settlement talks that could see the two companies ending the bitter patent war that's raged for the last year, the BBC reports.
